Recap:
Kagome burst out laughing; it was a little louder than it had been last night, but it a soft laugh none the less. Despite that, this one was from the heart. Souta smiled tenderly. `That was her first real laugh since she's come home; she is feeling better.' He grinned, `It is good to have her home.'
From Demons to Dementors
Kagome wiped the tears of laughter that had sprung into her eyes before Souta noticed their peculiar color.
“Oh, I needed that…” Kagome sighed. Souta playfully narrowed his eyes into a glare.
“You can't escape my question, you know, so tell me; how the hell did you do that?” Kagome smirked and her eyes twinkled with an equal amount of mischief.
“That's my little secret, na no da!” Was all the warning he got before she jumped down from the tree branch with apparent grace and ease. Souta stared wide-eyed at her; he could easily make a good estimate of a seventeen foot drop to the ground.
“How the h...Oh, never mind…” he grumbled, sliding down the trunk of the Goshinboku. Oh, how he loved the solid ground; it was much more stable than sitting seventeen feet in the air with nothing but a few inches of wood keeping you from getting a concussion. Or worse.
Kagome was waiting patiently for him at the bottom. He looked over to his sister and noted that her outfit was the similar to the one she wore last night.
`It's elegant, but comfy and easy to move around in…I wonder… Is everything she wears like that? So far, everything she has worn seems sophisticated, but durable… It's almost she is waiting for an attack, even in the safety of our home.' He duly noted that she still had her two swords at her side.
“Did you sleep with those things on?” he asked, pointing to them. Kagome glanced down.
“What…? Do you mean my swords? Of course; they never leave my body!” she exclaimed incredulously. It was obvious that she was so used to their presence that she didn't see her swords as objects; rather, they were extensions of her body. Souta raised an eyebrow.
“Well, let's at least have breakfast and get dressed so we can go shopping.” Souta sighed as Kagome merely looked confused.
“I'm guessing that not only have you outgrown your old clothes physically, but also mentally as well. Somehow I don't think pink mini-skirts with little kitty-cats are your style anymore,” he spoke dryly as Kagome visibly twitched.
“Yeah, I am kind of leaning away from this whole pink idea now,” Kagome said insipidly, gazing down at her rather formal, black and red attire.
“But as much as I would love to go shopping with you, I already have a stash of clothes and I don't need to buy any more. And besides,” she added sardonically, “I highly doubt they have what I would look for.” She smiled softly, `I thank you, Sesshoumaru-sama,' she mused in gratitude, for he was the one who had designed and bought all of her outfits.
“You already have clothes? Where? And how? You just got back home,” he questioned curiously.
“I have them in a safe place and I put them there a while ago, but I'll go get them when necessary.” She had a far away look on her face, `Another lie? Well, it's not truly a lie…'
“Well, how about breakfast then?” he asked.
“That does sound wonderful.” she smiled gently again before glaring over at the Goshinboku with frigid eyes.
“Go and get dressed, Souta-kun; there's something I need to do for a bit. I promise we will go out to breakfast later, alright?” she inquired. Souta looked a little disappointed, but perked up a bit at the idea of going out breakfast with his older sister. Even if it was later.
“Just the two of us?” he asked hopefully. He reminded her of a small child asking for a long awaited toy.
“Of course, Souta-kun, now go and get ready.” Kagome gave him a small nudge in the direction of the house. Souta ran through the door and up the stairs. She could hear his heavy footsteps all the way up to his room. She flinched at the sound of his Western-styled door being slammed against its frame. She sighed and glided to the stone bench near the Goshinboku and sat down. She began to hum a song Rin had taught her back in the Feudal Era.
“I know you're there, Okaa-san, and I know you want to talk, so come out. But be quick about it; you know I have a breakfast date with Souta-kun.” Kagome leaned back to gaze up at the branches of the Goshinboku.
“How did you… oh, never mind, I'm sure you learned it back there,” she stressed the `there.' Kagome sighed for a second time.
“Hai, Okaa-san, that amoung other things.”
(AN- They never call Kagome and Souta's mother or grandfather by name in the anime or the manga, so I'm just going to call the mother Okaa-san and the grandfather Ji-chan.)
Okaa-san huffed with uncharacteristic annoyance.
“I should have never let you continue going back to that terrible place!” she cried.
`Once again, the many years of living and training with Sesshoumaru-sama will come in handy,' she thought happily. Inside she laughed at her mother, but outwardly she seemed emotionless.
“There is nothing you could have done to prevent it or change it in anyway. I for one regret nothing.” Kagome murmured icily.
“But what good came of it? You disappeared for five years; we thought you were dead and now look at you! You use to be happy, bubbly, and full of life! But now! Now you are nothing more than an illusion of what you were!” Okaa-san spoke harshly. Kagome's hand twitched and she daintily placed it over one of her swords.
`It's amazing how calming my swords are to me,' she thought absentmindedly.
“Haha-ue-san, my friends and I saved thousands of lives and helped purge the world of one of the most evil creatures in existence and all you can say is that I have done nothing! Feh! I am amused by your foolish attempts to blame someone or something else for your petty insecurities,” Kagome ground out, steel lacing her voice.
“Look at the damage you have caused us! Look at Souta; LOOK AT HIM! He thought you were gone forever! You scared us all to death and we almost gave up hope. Whatever problems he has is because of you and your stupid quest!” Okaa-san spat at her daughter and stood shaking a finger at her furiously.
`Hmm Souta said he was the only one who never gave up hope; and mother seems to be withholding the truth I believe she is just trying to get over her pain by blaming useless and unimportant things on me.' Kagome hypothesized.
“Without me, this country you take for granted would never exist…” Kagome growled at her mother, her hand gripping her sword tightly.
“Do not make me raise my voice, Haha-ue-san!” Kagome's eyes flashed red as she fought to gain control of herself.
“Argh!” Okaa-san screamed in frustration.
“Even the way you talk is different! You have destroyed our lives for the last time, Kagome, but I won't have it! You can't do that! You just can't! You were wrong! … I wish you had just stayed in that hellish place forever…” Her rage was spent and she ended her rant in a whisper.
“You cannot blame everything that has gone wrong on me, Haha-ue-san; if anything, you should blame the Kami-sama.” Kagome spoke calmly, still fighting to keeping her cool and never letting her grip falter on her sword.
“…And I am truly sorry, but you cannot get rid of me so easily…” Kagome glared at her mother. Okaa-san got up in a huff and stormed back into the house and slammed the shoji door shut, but not before whispering cruelly, “You are dead to me. I have no daughter.”
“Ahhh...” Kagome sighed in relief.
“I must stop sighing like this, it cannot be good for my health,” she murmured aloud. “Wandering minds equal rolling heads,” she softly quoted Sesshoumaru-sama.
“Oi, Kagome, are you done with that major cat-fight so we can go to breakfast now?” Souta bellowed from his window.
Kagome glanced up at the sun and calculated that it was about 11AM.
“Alright, but we should probably make it a lunch date; it's getting late,” she called back, snickering slightly at his classification of the fight she had had with their mother.
“Sure, that's fine” he yelled back.
“But, Souta, don't you think I should tell Ji-chan that I'm home first?” she inquired.
“He is visiting a shrine in Osaka for a couple of weeks.” Souta smiled, seeming highly amused at the thought.
“Well, then. Just let me get ready, and then we can go to lunch.” Kagome got up and dusted herself off as she looked back up at her window. Finding it empty, she jumped into the Goshinboku. Balancing as she walked across the branch, she jumped into her room to get properly attired for her day out with her brother. Her darling little brother.
“Damn it! Souta, what the hell did you do to my room!?” she screeched.
(AN- Sorry guys, but I had to make their mother rather ooc. It's necessary for later chapters and plot twists.)
