Chapter 32: Break Apart
The morning sun crept upon the young couple. Bright hues of orange danced on the walls and enveloped their skin in warm inclusion. Kagome opened her eyes and gazed at the bronzed god next to her. She smiled as she slightly ran her fingertips along the hard planes of his abdominals. He was so beautiful and perfect.
InuYasha placed his hand over hers. "Good morning." He groggily said.
"Morning." Kagome responded before placing a kiss on his chest.
InuYasha smiled before returning a kiss to her forehead. He felt so content seeing Kagome's face first thing in the morning. He ran a hand through her murky locks before trailing the hand down her neck to caress her back. "Slept well?"
Kagome giggled. "Yeah, but the best part was waking up next to you."
InuYasha chuckled. "That was so corny." He teased.
Kagome shook her head and laughed. "I'll admit that."
"But," He started as he brought her closer into his embrace. "It's the sweetest thing I've heard in a long time." InuYasha said before planting a kiss on her ruby lips.
"InuYasha?" Sesshomaru sounded with a harsh knock to the wooden door.
"Shit." InuYasha said before scrambling out of bed. "Um...what?" He yelled.
"What are we going to do?" Kagome panicked.
"Hide." He whispered.
"What?" She asked.
"I know you're in there. I can hear you shuffling around."
"Hide." He strained. The last thing he wanted to do was to get caught, and by his brother no less. First off, it would blow their cover, but mainly, he wouldn't hear the last of it from Sesshomaru.
"But where?" Kagome densely asked.
"If you won't willingly let me in, then I'll have to come in on my on accord."
InuYasha groaned as he effortlessly swept Kagome off of her feet with his right arm, opened the closet with his left, and gently threw her in.
"A closet? Come on, Yasha."
"Sssh." InuYasha said placing his finger over his lips.
"InuYasha?" Sesshomaru said opening the door.
InuYasha quickly slammed the closet door and promptly turned around. "What?" He innocently asked.
"Is someone else in here?" The older brother said looking around the room.
"No." InuYasha said completely covering the closet door. "Why would you say that?"
"I don't know. I thought I heard another voice."
"Nope. Just me, myself, and I." InuYasha said lifting himself up on his tippy toes before settling back down to the carpeted floor.
"Oh, I must be hearing things."
"So, why are in my room?"
"Um..." Sesshomaru wondered as he walked around InuYasha's room. He didn't have a clue as to how he was going to handle this information. He sat down on the edge of the bed before continuing. "I received a telephone call early this morning." Sesshomaru started.
"Who was it?" InuYasha curiously asked.
"The doctor called." He solemnly said.
InuYasha heart immediately started to beat erratically. "And?" He stressed.
"Do you want to sit down?" Sesshomaru suggested as he motioned over to the spot next to him.
"No, I want you tell me what the doctor told you. Shit, I made that old coot promise not to tell a soul." He said before pacing the room in utter fear.
"I know, but my doctor thought it was urgent enough for him to tell me."
"What is urgent? You've failed to enlighten me."
Sesshomaru sighed before he started. "You have heart disease and the doctor advises for you to go under mild surgery."
"Surgery?" InuYasha whispered as his knees gave out making him plop down next to Sesshomaru.
A silence draped the two brothers as they both soaked in each other’s sorrow.
InuYasha gripped his pants in frustration. "What did I do wrong?"
"The doctor said it's hereditary. It's not your fault." Sesshomaru wrapped an arm around his brothers' shoulders. "You know, if you need anything....I'll...." He let out an emotion filled sigh.
InuYasha looked over to his brother who was surprisingly torn up about the situation.
"I know, Sess."
"You're going to be alright. I promise." Sesshomaru said giving his little brother a hug.
InuYasha accepted his brother's rare affection. "I'm sure of it." He assured his brother more than himself.
Sesshomaru released himself from the embrace and slowly got up. "I'll see you at breakfast." He said.
"Of course." InuYasha said as he escorted his brother to the door. “Um…when do I have to go under surgery?”
“As soon as possible, I hope. I didn't scheduled you a visit today because....well, it's still a wedding going on." Sesshomaru said before leaving out of the room.
InuYasha froze once he remembered the wedding was today and once he realized Kagome was in his closet....listening to everything that was said. "Kagome?" He lightly bespoke.
The closet door was gently cracked open revealing Kagome's tear stained face and emotionally permeated form. Her eyes were helpless and her skin was dauntingly ashen.
A single irrepressible tear slid down InuYasha's cheek at the sight of his eighteen year old beauty completely withdrawn.
Kagome bit her lip." Inu...Yasha." She managed to get before breaking out into tears.
InuYasha dashed forward and engulfed her fragile frame in his arms. She was trembling in his embrace. "Damn, girl, you acting like you got heart disease."
Kagome wailed louder at his small attempt to lighten the situation. "I don't want to lose you." She said between suffocated breaths.
"Baby, that's impossible." He leaned out of the embrace to look into her aquamarine jewels that were distressed with sorrow. "Nothing is taking me away from you."
Kagome nodded before leaning up to place a chaste kiss onto his lips. "I needed to hear that."
"Now, stop crying." InuYasha said as he used the pad of his thumb to trace her tears from her cheeks. "You're too beautiful to shed tears.....especially for an old dog like me."
Kagome giggled. "InuYasha, I'll do anything for you." She said before gently placing her lips against his. She started it, but InuYasha finished it as he traced his tongue along her rub jewels before nipping her lips and sucking them into his mouth.
Kagome moaned in the delight of having his pink appendage ravage hers.
Neither noticed the door creak open as a pair of brown eyes looked onto the scene.
"I knew it." A voice echoed making the couple jump.
InuYasha was the first to notice Kikyo standing at the threshold. "Kikyo?"
"How dare you?" She asked.
"Look, you don't understand." InuYasha said.
"She's your son's fiancée." She scorned.
InuYasha sighed. 'If I had nickel...' "You are the last one to place judgment. Why are so upset? I don't belong to you."
"Oh, and you belong to her and she to you." Kikyo amusingly chastised. "I mean, I know when I cheated on you it fucked you up in the head, but I never thought you went stone cold nuts."
"Fuck you, Kikyo."
"Oh, I think you fucked yourself enough for the both of us." Kikyo then looked over to Kagome. "And you? I thought you were as sweet as homemade apple pie. It seems like the fruit was rotten.”
Kagome gritted her teeth. She wanted to throw a snippy comeback, but couldn't bring herself to do it because deep down, Kagome was intimidated. So, the end result of tongue lashing she received from Kikyo was Kagome remaining docile and quiet.
“I wonder what little Hojo would say if his pride and joy was nothing but a common whore.” Kikyo teased.
InuYasha couldn’t help but to smile at Kikyo’s attempt to sabotage him. It was funny since Hojo was the first one to actually catch them…and they were doing a lot more than what they were just doing. InuYasha been through so much these last couple of months with Kagome, that the time he spent with Kikyo seemed frivolous. Hell, he even damaged the relationship he had with his own son to be with Kagome. He couldn’t even build the courage to fight the little twit that Kikyo ran off with. So, to hear that Kikyo would run and tell Hojo about him and Kagome was rather humorous. Especially, since he and Kagome were going to tell everybody anyway….it was just hilarious. InuYasha then fell forward in laughter. Both Kagome and Kikyo quizzically looked at him.
“What’s so damn funny?” Kikyo said as she placed her hand on her hip. “I fail to see the humor.”
InuYasha held his sides before he tried to calm down. He took two deep breaths before continuing. “Nothing’s funny.” He said as he wiped away tear that escaped from his excessive laughing. “You’re just so out of place here, Kikyo. The things you don’t know…..” He trailed before giving into a dry chuckle.
“What are you talking about?” Kikyo demanded. This was the last reaction she expected from InuYasha. She hoped he would come crawling on his knees begging her not to spill the beans.
“InuYasha, are you okay?” Kagome asked. She in turn was confused about his outburst.
“I’m fine actually.” He then turned to lock eyes with his love. “I’m fine.” He whispered softly to her as he placed a comforting hand on her shoulders. “It’s just…” InuYasha then turned towards Kikyo. “Nothing you do can hurt me anymore. What you did tore me down until I was nothing. I didn’t think I could ever trust a woman again, but Kagome here has hurt me more with just her words than you ever did with your actions.” He sighed as he ran his hand lovingly down Kagome’s back before settling just above her behind. “Yet I can’t let her go. I can’t seem to live without her because I love her more than I’ve ever loved you.”
Kagome looked up to InuYasha with hopeful eyes. “Inu….Yasha.” She whispered.
Kikyo heart thumped at his words. He loves this young tart more than her. She shook her head with disbelief before standing her ground. “It still doesn’t mean I won’t tell Hojo.”
InuYasha chuckled again. “Tell him!” He demanded. “Tell everybody for that matter! Hell, you’ll only be saving us the trouble of telling him ourselves. So, tell him. It ain’t like he didn’t already know in the first place.”
Kikyo growled as her plan seem to vanish in thin air. “You won’t get away with this scotch free, InuYasha. You’ll suffer from the consequences.”
InuYasha looked down to Kagome as he gently placed a hand over his heart. “I already have.”
Kikyo fumed as she whipped around before storming outside, slamming the door behind her. “I can’t let him get away.” She said to herself as she headed to Hojo’s room set on a new plan.
Once Kikyo was out of sight, Kagome grasped the hand that lay closest to InuYasha’s heart. “InuYasha, that was….” She paused as she tried to find the right thing to say. When she couldn’t find the words, she just settled for three. “I love you.” She said before leaning up to place a chaste kiss onto his lips.
“Tell me something I don’t know.” InuYasha said as he wrapped his arms around Kagome.
“Of course, I love her.” He said as he answered his own question. ‘But does she love you?’ Hojo did not know for sure, but he had a hunch that she didn’t. He always knew Kagome didn’t love him, so he had to ask himself again. ‘Why am I marrying Kagome? Is it because I love her…..or is it because I’m truly selfish and want her all to myself’
All of sudden a knock was heard at his bedroom door making him immediately jump up. “Maybe it’s Kagome.” He said as he ran to the door only to reveal Kikyo. His heart automatically sank to his feet. “What do you want?”
“Hojo,” She started before taking it upon herself to enter his room. “I have a proposition for you.” Kikyo tactically planned this out. It had to work.
“No.” Hojo instantly answered.
“But you don’t even know….”
“No.” He pushed. “I don’t need to.”
“Don’t you want to help your mother?” Kikyo asked.
“You’re not my mother.”
“I need someone to testify against InuYasha in court.” She began. “That’s all I need to get the other half of the estate, and without it I get nothing. InuYasha and Sesshomaru don’t even know that.”
Hojo raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you want to tell me this? I might take it upon myself to disclose this information to uncle Sessh and my father.”
‘Why was she telling me all of this?’ Kikyo wasn’t the type to lay all of her cards out on the table like that….unless….unless she had something up her sleeve.
“What if I told you that I can insure that you marry Kagome without the hassle of your father? I know you don’t want them around each other.”
Hojo began to fume. “How do you know that?”
“Well, anybody with eyes could see. Plus, I walked in on them kissing this morning.” She added.
Hojo bawled his fist. He knew it! “I don’t believe you.”
“That may very well be, but it’s true. Hypothetically, let’s say you do believe me.” Kikyo said as she began to circle Hojo like a lioness would her prey. “You want Kagome, but she doesn’t want you. I’ve been told she’s going to call off the wedding today and run off with your father. You don’t want that embarrassment.”
Hojo did believe her. Everything that came out her mouth was the truth; it had to be, because his heart has been telling him this from the beginning. “Hypothetically, let’s say I do believe you. How can you insure she doesn’t call off the wedding?”
Kikyo stopped circling long enough to hover over Hojo from behind. “She says she loves him. If she really did, she wouldn’t want half of his estate to be taken away….especially from me, which will happen if she doesn’t marry you. This could only work if I have witness to back me up in case she runs off with your father anyway. This way you could have your revenge.”
Hojo began to ponder. He loved Kagome and his father despite their actions. He didn’t want to be the accomplice in hurting his father. But….his father did hurt him first. So, Hojo had to ask himself again. ‘Why am I marrying Kagome?’
“You’ve got yourself a deal.”
‘It’s because I’m truly selfish and want her all to myself’

Hojo stared at his tuxedo as it rested on the bed….taunting him. The sun was up, yet Kagome was no where to be found. He had the assumption that she was cuddled up with his father, but he didn’t want to believe that.
