Chapter 6
Seiya was for lack of a better word completely disgusted with himself for what he had allowed himself to agree to. To think that the bastard would go and command a life debt from him instead of just doing it out of the good of his heart was more than enough to send Seiya into a frenzy that he didn't need to get into. But, his temper got the best of him and he soon smashed some of the cabinets in his room and put too much strain on his ribs and fell to the ground screaming in pain, but instead of his savior coming to his rescue it was the little dog sprite Shiba who gave healed his ribs enough so that the pain would subside. When the sprite finished she asked, "What happened, Seiya-san?" Tossing the question aside Sei told her, "Nothing, Shiba but thank you for the help. You can go now." The little demon bowed and snapped her fingers before going, leaving him a small amount of food for him that just went to waste.
He knew that getting up like that wasn't the smartest thing since after his fit his brain began to pound violently in his head and made his nausea return much to his disdain and it was all he could do to make sure that the bile at least made it into the vase that he was pretty sure was a chamber pot since it still stunk despite all it's cleaning. Yet, sleep found him after his adventure and his mind drifted to thoughts of his mother. More specifically the day that she died, he thought he'd cleared those memories from his mind but somehow just being in this place made him want her to be around, but wanting her made the memory come back.
Unlike most funerals his mothers happened on a warm sunny day which was rather annoying to both him and the rest of the people around him since the mood that the day normally inspired only worsened the one that they were all in. He stood there in his ceremonial robes as the priest purified his mother's soul and then allowed each of the family to do as much. Sei was shaking so much that he needed his fathers help just to move away from his mother's limp form and take him into one of the guest rooms of a family home as he cried for the rest of the day and never once left his room for the duration of the time that his father had allowed him to at take time to adjust. But he couldn't adjust, his mother was dead and he had to go back home and live in all those rooms that she had smiled at him from and everywhere he could just see her. He wallowed like that for months and each day came home with a bruise or a cut from kids jumping him in his weakened state. He didn't care he just allowed them a couple of shots but they left him alone since it wasn't fun for them to beat on a victim if they didn't struggle.
Finally the fights and teasing just stopped since the bullies lost all interest in him and he was glad, or as glad as he could feel at the time and it came as some relief to have some of the stress from his shoulders but he still felt empty inside and kept feeling empty until he just decided to block out the memories. It took awhile but it finally worked and everytime he looked at a picture of his mother he felt nothing and could get on with his life and he was glad that Kagome had finally stopped trying to make him feel better and just let him live his life. But it was still hard since now that he'd gotten on with his life his dad was still wallowing in the despair of the loss and he did his best to keep his dad happy and sometimes it worked and other times it just went flat and he thought his dad wouldn't come out of it until he was fourteen.
But when his memories turned to that he just stopped thinking and went on with his day, hey his dad had finally gotten back his old spirit, and he had someone to share his life with but for now he didn't need to dwell on all that since he was finally at least able to move around without getting sick and boy was that a relief since his legs were starting to feel like lead. But he took it in strides and always had someone near him, well one of three people always came to keep him company.
During his stay in the castle he'd gotten to become pretty close with the two dog sprites and they were always glad to keep him occupied with something, Whether it was cooking, some light cleaning, or helping in the garden he never went a day without one of those sprites playing a trick on him. And he admired their determination at pulling off their favorite pranks especially Shiba. Of the two he liked Shiba the best because he could tell she was a real devil, because unlike her brother her tricks were devious without actually doing any actual harm and you could laugh at it, but with Kiba it was trying to get as much destruction as possible in one blow which can be funny but his pranks were easy to spot before they happened and had a good probability of failing and leaving the sprite running with his tail between his legs.
Yet Sei felt a special connection with the young girl Rin, who at only 13 years of age was still as pure hearted as a child half her age despite the horrors she'd lived through and he was glad that she was around because it felt odd being in that castle with only demons around but to have a human around was some small amount of comfort. That's not to say the castle servants were the most vile things around, but as far as he could tell it was just like being the only male in an all female club, and such an emotion had been forced upon him many a times.
Once he got his mobility back Sei had decided that it was time for a tour of the castle and thought that he'd like to go outside before anything else, but since he didn't know the layout he thought it best to mark his door before he began his exploration of the Inu-no-Taisho's castle. On his first time out he was glad that he hadn't gotten lost when finding his way to the courtyard but where to go was a problem until a voice asked, "Are you okay Sei-san?" Turning around he saw the girl standing behind him cautiously and he smiled and said, "No, Rin I'm just trying to learn where things are so I don't get lost the next time I come here." The girls face lit up at his statement and she asked, "You'll be coming back?" He nodded and said, "Yes, Sesshomaru.....sama has taken out a life debt and part of it is to sometimes come here when I have enough time and watch over you but if I don't he'll leave you at Inuyasha Village and I'll watch you there." He saw her face fall for a moment but almost immediately her face was a smile again and she said, "I'll show you around Sei-san."
To his surprise she took him by the hand and showed him around the entire court yard. At first it wasn't all that glorious just a stable, a blacksmith area and some guard stations but then she showed him the garden and he was impressed at what he had found. Inside the castle was probably one of the most beautiful places he had ever been and he wasn't much of a plant guy either. Looking around he asked, "Who planted all of these?" Piping up from a flower bush Rin said, "Me and the sprites." Looking at her he asked, "So, Sesshomaru-sama allows you to plant things?" Rin nodded from her spot near the bush and said, "He likes nature more than civilization, which is why we always travel."
Sei scoffed at her reply and thought, So the bastard is more soft hearted than I realized.....I guess you learn more about a person when you see where they live. And with that he sat next to Rin and began talking to her about the flowers and plants in her precious garden. That had been over a week ago and now he had taken to helping her with the weeding and the watering when he wasn't immersed in a game of Shogi or Go with Sesshomaru. He found it odd that the dog had yet to take it upon him to discuss the topics that were to go along with the debt, in fact the demon said nothing but, "Play a game with me." or "Watch, Rin for awhile." But other than that it was nothing and all he said were the four names listed by the demon the day he had woken up from his unconcious state.
He didn't mind playing the games since he was so out of practice, Sei placed himself probably at a 22 kui when he'd at one point been at least a1 dan before his mother had died and he'd lost interest in the games, but now with a weeks practice he was beginning to see the openings that Sesshomaru was more than likely leaving open for him to discover and claim rather than demolish him in five minutes. Which was about 10 times longer than most of their first games that they had played but for some reason his "lord" liked to play at least 6 games a day with him and they never said a word throughout the entire session.
But today was a session that he would remember for his life. His day had began in a small library that Rin had told him was for anyone to use if they wanted, and he'd used it more often than not and found a lot of books on the history of the world and the old ways of science and battle and he'd taken to using the paper and pens Kagome had left to figure out the sciences and to correct possible battle mistakes that had occured due to the commanding officers arrogance and that days research had been going well until he heard a familiar cough and sat up and looked to the door to find the Inu-no-Taisho standing there with two bowls and a board staring at him before saying, "Follow me to the courtyard for our match."
With a feeling of disgust at how obedient he had become at the dogs commands Sei followed silently behind his "lord" as they walked through the halls to the covered area of the courtyard where Sesshomaru passed him the cup with the white stones and he took the black. This wasn't a common occurence but Sei didn't complain as he'd at lest get first move and they bowed their heads and Sei placed his first stone down and was quickly followed by Sesshomaru who set a black down near his area, to which Sei countered with a connector to his initial stone.
And that's how the game started as it normally did, placing the stones and destroying territory and taking it back and this time it just seemed to go by way too quickly as Sei didn't even realize that the board had been nearly filled and Sesshomaru said, "Enough." and began to count out the points, and as uusual Sei had lost but this time by only 5 points. He cleared his stones and was ready for another round when Sesshomaru said, "You are getting to be an actual challenge, boy." Sei could feel his anger boil at being spoken to in such a manner but instead of allowing himself to be provoked and proving Sesshomaru's taunts correct Sei said, "My lord honors me with his compliment."
Snorting Sesshomaru said, "Yes well that doesn't say much for this Sesshomaru who has been playing for only a century." Arching his eyebrow Sei asked, "Only a century?" Looking up Sesshomaru said, "Yes, boy only a century. I seem to forget how long that may seem to you humans who barely seem to live only a decade over half of a century. And didn't you forget something at the end of your question?" Breathing heavily Sei said, "Forgive me Sesshomaru-sama I meant no offense." Smirking at the boys ability to control his outbursts Sesshomaru said, "You're forgiven but see that it doesn't happen again." Nodding Sei said, "Yes Sesshomaru-sama." before placing down his stone to begin a new game.
As the game began Sei asked, "Why do you wish to play this game with me, sir?" Setting down his stone and waiting Sesshomaru said, "Because I've seen you in the study and seen your papers." Setting his own stone down Sei asked, "What does that have to do with anything Sesshomaru-sama?" Returning the move the youkai said, "Because you've actually uncovered ways to counter the mistakes of those fools in the past. And since you've done that I thought that I may as well see just how well you can adapt to such situations and you seem more than capable of doing so with the progress you've made against me." Feeling his face blush a bit Sei asked, "My lord, what dangers are there for Rin on your travels?"
Setting a stone down and removing a few stones of Seis the demon said, "There is a council of the strongest demon clans that occurs and at the last one they said that if I were to offer protection to another human they would kill one of them. But the bastards are so old and incompetent that the meetings are hardly held and the judgements passed never occur." Nodding and claiming a fair bit of territory with his current move said, "But surely you are strong enough to defeat anyone who challenges her safety? Right my lord?" Nodding Sesshomaru finished his move and said, "For the most part but I wish for Rin not to witness anymore bloodshed. She doesn't need to be led down the path of most humans in this age."
Smirking to himself Sei said, "Well my lord who is the one that threatened her safety?" Glaring at the boy across from him Sesshomaru said, "That need not concern you now finish your move." Chuckling to himself Sei captured a small group of stones and said, "Forgive me my lord, I was only curious." But all he received was a huff as Sesshomaru finished his move and they continued their game in silence.
That night Sei sat in his room and thought about what Sesshomaru had discussed with him. It was odd for a demon of such power to fear for a young human girl but with their history Sei could see where he was coming from and the fact that Sesshomaru had shared such information came as a massive surprise to him. Here he was two weeks into the dog demons debt and he was used to calling him the names that were said in the agreement and he didn't really feel that disgusted with himself at it. Sure it pissed him off but he guessed it was part of his human instinct to do what he needed to do to survive even if it meant giving up a small bit of his pride.
But the fact that Sesshomaru had actually shared in a conversation with him was the more interesting part of the day, and the scary part was that Sesshomaru had actually complimented him scared him but his reaction was what had taken him from scared to full blown frightened. He'd actually blushed at the demon complimenting him!!! Why the hell had he allowed the words to affect him like that? It was a stupid game and all the guy had said was he was becoming a worthy opponent and he ends up blushing like that one rock star from that anime, "Gravity" or something when he's approached by that blonde guy.
He sat back and took a swig of his tea that he'd made in the kitchen a few minutes ago and sighed deeply saying to himself, "It's times like these I wish I was born straight 'cuz then I wouldn't have to deal with crap like this." He took another deep gulp of his tea before refilling his glass and staring at the wall before saying, "At least he treated me like an equal to an extent. It's probably more than what he's ever done for Inuyasha at least." Thinking back to a few weeks ago he smiled as he thought about how many times Kagome had sat him before his face ended up looking like her entrance room floor when a knock came from his door.
Setting his cup down Sei got up from his bed and opened the door and looked around. When he didn't see anybody he asked, "Who's there?" When out of nowhere the head of an oldman hit his face and a high voice said, "Down here you foolish human!" He shuddered at the voice and asked, "What is it toad?" His voice was filled with much disdain as he thought of Jaken being around. He despised the little bastard as the toad was always making snide remarks to him and dropping dead mice and small animals into his room which he later had to bury out of pity for the creatures to suffer such cruel ends.
Hell if Sei wanted to be despised and hated all he had to do was go back through the well but this was more out of jealousy than hate, so to keep in the grace of his host Sei looked down and said, "I asked a question toad. What do you want?" At the sound of the humans voice Jaken said, "Listen here boy! You are a human guest in the house of my great Lord Sesshomaru, and as his long time vassal I demand some respect!" Looking down Sei smirked and said, "Oh, really? What exactly drove you to become Sesshomaru's servant wart ass?"
The frog demon growled and said, "He saved my men in battle and I left them to serve his majesty and unlike you I have helped him in battle and cared for Rin for much of the past 7 years." Looking at the toad Sei shrugged and said, "Whoopee, you're his whippng boy big deal. But that still doesn't answer my question." Growling at the insolence he was receiving Jakken said, "Listen here boy, I may be a bit of a whipping boy but that is because I am a servant under a master. But unlike you I don't want to be a whipping boy for pleasure." Blinking at the toad Sei asked, "What the hell are you talking about?" The toad smirked and said, "I see more than you know boy. I saw what happened when my lord commended you on your performance during the game today." Scoffing Sei said, "Wow, that's a big piece of information there. You should let out your services for hire."
Snarling Jaken said, "Okay boy, fine deny what you feel but my lord has no time for humans. Now to answer your question my lord wishes you to go into the village with Rin tomorrow." Arching an eyebrow Sei asked, "That it?" Nodding Jakken said, "Yes you are to visit the doctor and spend time with Rin and hopefully you will be out of our sight for awhile." Sei was about to comment when a low cough interuppted them and Sesshomaru said, "Jaken you know better than to insult one under my protection." The toad coward and said, "Forgive me my lord I was just letting the boy know his place." But his apology went unnoticed as the approached and shoved him out of the way and said, "And you boy should be more grateful to those who save your life."
Snorting Sei said, "I am grateful, my lord." But the last part was said with such sarcasm that Sesshomaru clutched him by the throat and threw him against the opposite wall while still holding his throat and got so close that his lips nearly brushed Seis and said in a low husky voice, "If what the toad says is true I shall do what your blush most possibly suggested and use you in the original manner you thought I wished to use you for instead of the girls care taker." The demon being so close Sei wondered if Sesshomaru was either lying or telling the truth but the power in his voice told him that the latter was the most likely answer and said, "I will be more grateful my lord. And shall take care of Rin as best I can." Checking his eyes the youkai let him go and said, "Good. Now I'm retiring for the night. Jaken, make sure the guards are doing there jobs." Bowing deeply and snickering at Sei the toad ran off to the courtyard leaving the human alone and feeling just a tiny bit excited.
Maybe he likes a little punishment maybe he doesn't oh well R&R!!!
