Kagome walked home alone like she always did along the lonely street limping slightly from the pain in her knee. The pain ha dulled since her last period and had made the walk home a lot easier on Kagome but even so if she didn't get home on time she would have to face her father. She shuttered at the thought of it and it gave her the motive enough to put the pain at the back of her mind and walk a little faster. She could still feel the bruise on her forehead from the other day that she had covered in makeup.
On the way home her thoughts wondered over to her new silver haired English teacher Mr. Taisho thinking about how he was trying to get her out into the open where she didn't want to be. Whenever she was put into the spotlight she always ended up regretting it and she knew she would have to get the point across to Mr. Taisho somehow or at least get him to give up.
And he is really cute too, Kagome thought as a mental picture came into her mind just before she gave herself a mental slap, he's a teacher for god's sake I shouldn't think about him like that.
Putting all her other thoughts aside she walked up the driveway of her house and paused a minute to take a breath at the door. It wasn't a bad house, it was small but it was only Kagome and her dad living in the home so it was fine for them. It was a little worse for wear in some ways, the gutters needed to be cleaned, the windows were dusty, the driveway was cracked and the lawn was beginning to become a weed garden but it was still home to Kagome. It was a place she felt she couldn't leave despite everything in her life she couldn't leave her home until she had to go find a job after her graduation.
She tried turning the knob of the door but found it locked; it was odd because her father usually never bothered with it and was out until late at night every night. There was only one key made for the house and that was the key her father kept when he actually did lock the door.
Swallowing hard she knocked on the door and on the inside she could hear movement as her father opened the living room window to yell out at her.
Kagome's father was a man in his mid forties, the hair at his temples beginning to grey, with Kagome's same messy black hair. He had a generous amount of whiskers on his face when he neglected to shave and had a fairly slim build.
He didn't look to happy, “Kagome I am tired of you coming home late you little whore! If you want to go do whatever the hell you want when you want then why don't you go live on your own for tonight? Maybe one of your boyfriends will let you bunk with him you little slut! I don't want you in this house tonight and if you don't come home on time tomorrow then I'll make you sorry.”
There was no way she was going to stick around and test how far he would go to enforce the punishment and casting her eyes to the ground she walked off down the street. This was not the first time this had happened; in fact it was one of his favourite `you're late' punishments, so Kagome knew the drill. Of course she didn't have any friends much less a boyfriend that would let her stay at their house for a night so she headed to the spot that had become one of her favourite places to sleep, the park.
It was a park not far from her home, no more than a fifteen minute walk, but with her limp it took her about twenty. It was one of the newer types of parks with lots of the plastic tunnels that were big enough for Kagome to crawl in and sleep. Kagome was happy she had an extra heavy jacket in her backpack since it was September and the nights were beginning to get colder, and the only good thing about that would be less mosquito bites for her in the morning.
I'll have to go to school early tomorrow and have a shower there, Kagome thought as she climbed to the top of the biggest slide and sat there just to think for a little while, but what am I going to do about food tonight? I guess I could buy some pizza but that would mean no lunch tomorrow at school.
“Excuse me,” a small timid child's voice piped from behind Kagome on the slide latter.
Kagome turned around seeing the face of a small girl looking up at her, she then realized that she was blocking the path down the slide for the girl and immediately slide off allowing the girl up.
The young girl came down immediately after giggling, and running around the back of the slide to the latter to have another go. Kagome noticed the young girl was different, she wasn't even human, she was a young demon child. It was barely noticeable since the only thing that gave her away was her crimson eyes. pointed ears that were hidden by a mess of dark ebony hair, and two green stripes running along each cheek. The young girl couldn't have been more than five or six years old.
“You know this is a park for little kids right,” a black haired woman walked up to Kagome, her arms on her sides, “You shouldn't just take this place over as your own hang out. I wish there were still some places left where my girl could play without being bothered by you teens.”
The woman was definitely the mom; the child looked so much like her. Her hair was short and kept up in a ponytail, her eyes were red, her ears were pointed, she was a grown up version of the young girl.
“I'm sorry,” Kagome gave a weak smile.
The woman looked at Kagome for a moment, “There is something about you, what is your name?”
“Kagome.”
She nodded noticing all the blood that had dried around Kagome's knee, “How did that there happen Kagome?”
“I tripped.”
“Well I hope you put some disinfectant on that Kagome because if you didn't its just going to cause you problems,” the woman gave a small smile, “I'm Kagura Taisho by the way and my daughter is Rin. I should probably say I'm sorry as well, its been a stressful day for me and I guess I snapped at you. I mean a huge car accident and a loaded ER is not your fault now is it?”
Kagome shook her head giving another weak smile, she has the same last name as my new English teacher.
Kagura gave a small smile and sipped a coffee she had in her hand when a fat raindrop fell on Kagome's head. She hadn't even noticed the dark clouds that had rolled in, “Oh damn, come on Rin we should get going or we are going to get soaked.”
“But mom,” the child whined.
“No buts, you're going to get sick if you stay out in the rain now come along,” Kagura ordered pointing to the car on the side of the street, “You better get home too Kagome.”
Kagome just nodded and took off down the street but not in the direction of home, as soon as she turned the corner of the street she ran into the trees that were on the side of the park. She needed to get away before her makeup got washed off, but even though she didn't know it some of it already had while Kagura was still watching.
Those bruises, Kagura thought to herself as she ushered her child into the car, she couldn't have just tripped like she said. Some of those looked to be days old…
Kagome stayed in the trees for hours trying to hide herself from the rain but it was pouring and even the thickest branches would eventually let her get soaked. So as soon as it started to get dark and people were in their homes not paying anymore mind to the small park she snuck into the tubing of the tunnels and wrapped her extra thick sweater around her shoulders to attempt to stay warm.
It was going to be a long night. It was cold, and she was already soaked, but at least the tubing in the park would keep her out of the rain.
It's so cold out here, Kagome shivered snuggling into her jacket.

InuYasha yawned as he sipped his coffee; he had gotten to school on time but had to adjust to the new earlier mornings. He couldn't help but give long wide mouthed yawns that made his white fangs glow in the florescent lights in the classroom.
He glanced at the clock groaning, class wouldn't start for almost an hour and he was getting bored of just sitting around. InuYasha was used to a lot more exercise and if he stayed in the same classroom much longer he would go completely insane. He decided to take a little tour around the school; after all he hadn't even seen the whole place yet, just the side of the school he worked on and the cafeteria.
Giving yet another yawn InuYasha wondered down the hallways going nowhere in particular.
“Mr. Taisho,” a frail voice quivered from behind him as one of the older teachers walked out of her classroom when she noticed him watch by. InuYasha knew the old teacher from before he ever started working at Shinkon High, her name was Kaede and she was an old friend of the family. She had been almost a grandmother to him his whole life and it was sort of nice to see a familiar face, it only made him feel worse that he was watching the woman get frailer every year.
She gave a smile and hugged InuYasha, “I can't believe it you've grown so much I just can't believe you're the pup I would take to ice cream at the park all those years ago! How do you like teaching at this school aren't the kids just lovely?”
“Ya they are great,” InuYasha gave a small smile when something, or rather someone, came to mind, “About that too, do you know that one girl Kagome Higurashi?”
“Oh yes I know her very well, I was her teacher way back when I taught in elementary school,” Kaede said thoughtfully, “She was seven years old and what a spunky little girl she was too, though she did have a little problem back then.”
“Like what?”
“The boys would always make fun of her because she was so small and weak so one day in her second grade she just snapped and really showed those boys she was no pushover. After that she had a hard time dealing with emotions and she would snap like that more often, eventually it got to the point where the only person on earth that could get to her was her twin brother,” Kaede frowned slightly shaking her head.
InuYasha's eyebrow cocked up slightly, “I didn't know Kagome had a twin brother.”
Kaede's expression only dropped further, “His name was Souta Higurashi.”
He heard all to well the word was and Kaede seemed determined to change the subject, “Now tell me InuYasha have you had any breakfast yet today?”
“No,” that was the wrong answer by far, he didn't realize it until after he had said it but there was no way on heaven or earth Kaede would let him go without something to start off his day. If she didn't it would go against the motherly instinct she was most known for in the town.
“Come along I know you never did like cafeteria food but they do serve half decent breakfast muffins.”
Having no choice InuYasha followed Kaede down the hall toward the cafeteria, silent in thought, I wonder what happened to Kagome that made her the way she is. Did what happen to her brother affect her and make her so…

“Kagome you shouldn't hit the others,” a young boy that looked a lot like Kagome whispered softly as they sat together in their chairs facing the wall for their time out, “You don't need to do anything to prove yourself.”
Kagome stared stubbornly at the wall with a scowl fixed on her face and her fist clenched so hard on her knuckles were turning white, “They shouldn't have opened their big mouths, I told them they would regret it, I told them that I would hurt them if they said any more. You shouldn't have gotten in the way Souta or you wouldn't have gotten hurt.”
Souta's hand ran over the rather large bruise around his eye and he sighed turning to his sister, “Kagome sometimes it takes more strength not to use your fists.”
The small girl looked over at her brother her face looked almost like a blank slate.
“If they were being so mean to you how come you never came to me Kagome,” Souta's eyes looked shiny for a few moments, “Its not good to keep things bottled up inside don't you remember what Mrs. Kaede told us? If something is hurting you then you tell someone you trust and then you can feel better…is that is Kagome? Do you not trust me as your own twin brother?”
For a long time Kagome didn't move or speak she just looked stunned then suddenly tears began to gather at the corner of her eyes like giant pearls and rolled down her cheeks, “Souta I'm sorry.”
“Its ok Kagome,” Souta gave a small smile and rested his hand on his sister's shoulder, “You don't have to cry because I will never leave you and you'll never have to feel alone ever again.” The young boy winked, “Next time those guys make fun of you again I will hold them down and you can scream at them all you want ok?”
Kagome nodded giving a small smile.

Sitting up with a start Kagome hit her head off of the low roof of the tunnel; it took her a few minutes to make sense of where she was. She was breathing rather heavily and buried her face in her hands letting out small whimpers but unlike in her dream she didn't cry. Kagome never cried anymore after she had learned that without a shoulder to cry on it did nothing to help her, and no one was there for her anymore because she no longer had a brother.
I should get to school, Kagome sighed inwardly glancing at her watch then down at the crimson stain still on the knee of her pants, I have to clean these yet too.
As she pulled herself out of the tunnel she noticed her head was pounding and spinning at the same time. So much so that she had to sit on the damp sand in the play area for a few minutes to clear her head. She crouched there for a long time with her hand on her forehead, she was burning up, her stomach was turning from hunger and nausea, and on top of that her knee was still throbbing.
“This can't be happening I can't be sick,” she muttered to herself as she clutched her stomach, she would have thrown up if there was anything in her stomach, but that is what happens when you sleep soaking wet in a cold and drafty play set, “If I don't go to school they will call dad, if I go and they find out I am sick then they will send me home and call anyway to asked questions about my condition. If that happens…I can't even think about it.”
There was not much choice, at least if she went to school she could fix herself up in the girls showers and make it seem like she wasn't sick, so as fast as she could go with an injured knee she made her way up to the school trying to ignore how fuzzy her head was feeling. She would just have to suck it up, she had been through worse. The hard part would be avoiding the teachers that would be sure to be in building already that would wonder why she was at school so early.
Grabbing her things from her locker she walked through the cafeteria on her way to the girls' locker room. She must not have been paying attention to what she was doing because as she was walking she hit something hard like a wall and fell backward in surprise. Well the thing she walked into wasn't a wall it was a teacher, a curtain silver haired teacher who was now covered in coffee and what had once been his breakfast muffin.
“Shit,” Mr. Taisho cursed as the scalding coffee stung his chest; he looked down at Kagome who hadn't gotten her to feet yet, “Miss Higurashi? You're here rather early aren't you?”
Kagome didn't say anything, her head was spinning so much she couldn't even co-ordinate herself enough stand up.
“Miss Higurashi are you ok,” he asked.
She nodded finally getting on her feet again, “I am sorry Mr. Taisho I'll pay to have your shirt cleaned.”
“Don't worry about it I hated this shirt anyway,” Mr. Taisho shrugged, he could care less about his wardrobe, “There are more important things in this world than a stained shirt Miss Higurashi…but I am wondering if you are ok.”
Quickly Kagome nodded and speed walked around her teacher and away from the cafeteria, she had to avoid any questions knowing she probably looked like a mess after her difficult night.
InuYasha stood there watching Kagome take off looking slightly puzzled.
Kagome glanced in the mirror and frowned slightly, no wonder Mr. Taisho had looked so worried for her. Her hair was a mess, her skin was unnaturally pale with slightly flushed looking cheeks, her cloths were a complete mess, there were bags under her eyes, and there is no need to describe further so lets just say that night had been more than just uncomfortable. Almost all of the makeup covering the bruises on her face had been washed off by rain and the light purple spots were now visible, especially the one around the arm of her eyebrow and at the top of her forehead.
I hope he didn't think too much into it, she thought taking off her cloths and getting into the shower stall.
The water felt nice over Kagome sore and stiff body and she enjoyed it as much as she could though the pounding and dizziness in her head hadn't gone away completely, and her fever will still apparent. Old bruises and scars still haunted her body, things she had always covered up with her blue jeans and large sweaters, things no one else could see, or no one else cared about. There had only ever been three people in her life that cared about her and made her feel safe, one of them being her twin brother, the other had been her mother, and the last person had turned their back to her a long time ago. She was alone.
She dressed quickly and worked on her makeup again making sure nothing was showing and she found herself just staring at herself in the mirror. Kagome couldn't help but see a little girl with her eyes staring back at her from the mirror's surface, the girl that had once been her. The girl wasn't smiling; she was just looking back at her with wide brown eyes that seemed to be endless as well as emotionless. She couldn't take looking at the reflection any longer and turned away from it gathering her things and heading out the locker room door.
It was another day for her, another day that would bleed into many other days of the rest of her life. The days she would spend alone as usual.
