Kagome had bumped into someone, whoever it was, was a guy who seemed a few years older than Kagome but the memory was incomplete so she could not see his face. He just appeared as an ominous black figure looming over her as she cringed feeling her scrapes and bruises worsen from falling back onto the sidewalk.

She looked up at the boy for a long time, she could sense words, but she couldn't hear a thing, like someone had sucked all the air out of a container. The only thing that ever reached her ears was the screeching of car tires as it tried to break, screaming from onlookers, the sound of the crash, and then once again came the silence. The silence scared Kagome more than all of the other racket and she, along with half the neighborhood, ran out to the street to see what happened.

Her breathing completely stopped and all she could hear was her heart pounding inside her skull like her brain was trying to beat its way out from the inside. She recognized one of the cars in the crash, a candy apple red Caravan, the car that got Kagome and her brother to school and back every morning. It had collided head on into a large pick up completely totaling the entire front half of the Caravan, and there was only one person that had ever driven that car. She wasn't sure whether to scream or cry or do anything as people behind her screamed, Kagome could no longer hear those voices, she couldn't even tell if she was screaming herself.

Young Kagome ran out into the street without even thinking about it and began pounding her fists on the door of her mother's car to try and get it to open but the car was to mangled for anything. In her panic she had completely blocked out the common sense that there could still be cars coming down the street not aware of the wreck, so she just kept pounding on the door and crying out for her mother.

Two circles of light appeared finally attracting Kagome's attention and she cried out in terror, cars had always come fast down those streets, and most of them were transport trucks heading out of town. The car's hood was almost twice as high as Kagome was tall, if she got hit she wouldn't stand a chance, but she was completely frozen.

“Somebody help me,” she cried half choking on her own words seeing a soft pink glow around her body.

There was a silver blur, and for a moment Kagome couldn't make sense of anything around her. Someone had picked the small girl up bridal style, jumping them both clear over the wreck and to the other side of the road where neighbors had been screaming for someone to help the little girl.

Kagome's breath finally got the chance to catch up with her after that and so did some of her senses as she looking up at the face of the person that had rescued her. All she could remember seeing was a pair of red eyes looking down at her, and how whoever or whatever it was snarling like an animal every time someone came near the two of them to see if they were alright. Little Kagome was terrified of those eyes.

Sunday Kagome had nothing planned so she just slept into late morning trying to wait for the throbbing in her forehead to go down. She only got up when she could feel Myou etching at the edge of her mind for some food. By then her father had already left the house to go looking into the financial details of their deal at the bank, thank god, and likely he would be out doing that for a couple hours then off to treat Mr. Wolfe to some alcohol at his bar until later that night.

“I think I should grocery shopping today Myou, I'm starving, I don't remember the last time I ate something but I am starving,” Kagome couldn't believe the first words she said that day were to something that probably wouldn't understand a thing she would say. Because of her little head injury she couldn't remember a thing of last night, including her puppy talking to her; it was probably for the best. If she had remembered she would still be seriously worrying about her sanity. Who wouldn't? Hearing voices in your head would make anyone freak out at least a little.

The tiny pup, who obviously now shared human intelligence with Kagome, just gave a reassuring speak deciding it was best not to say anything to his adoptive mother. That contact with Kagome through that weird pink light had transferred just enough of Kagome's own life into the pup, he could be considered almost human, but some would almost even classify him as a demon.

Stashing Myou back under her bed after he was content and had a full belly, and staggered her way to the washroom to check the damage she had taken.

Cringing she squinted looking into the bathroom mirror, her vision was blurred because large pearl like tears were being forced out by the pain. It looked almost as bad as it felt, the corner of her dresser had given her a generous gash across her temple that had stained the side of her face red with blood and her hair clung to it dried a crimson colour. Her heart skipped a few beats at the thought that she might need stitches on a wound like that, explaining it wouldn't be all that hard, but her father would blame it on her and only do something worse as a punishment for having to pay a hospital bill. Kagome would just have to do the best she could do with the cut, maybe put some bandages on it to keep her hair from getting in it and getting infected.

Kagome pushed her shopping cart down the lonely istle of the small grocery store looking over things she would like to eat over the next week. In the baby's seat of her cart she had set her small backpack purse which had been lined with towels and a small hot water bottle and an old watch next to a sleeping Myou. She didn't feel safe leaving him at home especially since she would be gone a long time and she was the only one that was available to feed him. In fact he would need to eat about half in about a half hour. Kagome would have to keep him relatively hidden while she was in the store but they would probably go easy on her since it was her job to care for the little pup.

I need some fresh vegetables, Kagome thought looking at her shopping list as she walked.

Like every other time Kagome does something she wasn't exactly paying attention to where she was going because she was reading a few items ahead in her shopping list. The clash sound of metal against metal rung in Kagome's already sore head as she collided head on with the cart of someone who had been preoccupied with grabbing things off the shelf.

“Sorry, sorry,” Kagome snapped to attention instinctively trying to apologies to someone she hadn't even looked at yet.

“Miss Higurashi,” Kagome's Mr. Taisho said in slight surprise nearly dropping his ramen when his cart got crashed into, “What are you doing here.”

“Grocery shopping,” she said meekly, funny, InuYasha noticed that she seemed more worried about her backpack that was in the baby seat than her milk and eggs that had toppled over.

Stupid question, what a stupid fucking question, InuYasha scolded himself in his mind, Kagome had just as might right to be grocery shopping as he did so why was he so goddamn surprised about it. Though after a few seconds he had something else to be surprised about, “Miss Higurashi what on earth did you do to your head?”

Kagome's heart was beating faster than normal since she was around Mr. Taisho, but she couldn't tell him the truth about what happened obviously so she lied, “Oh I was late for work yesterday and when I rushed I tripped over some cloths on my floor. The doctor says its fine.”

“Really it looks pretty nasty to me,” InuYasha muttered, able to smell the blood hidden underneath the bandages from where he was standing, but then again there was another weird scent around as well that he couldn't place, “Listen I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable the other night, I am really not good with confronting people, and as you can tell apologies aren't my strongest suit either.”

“It's alright Mr. Taisho,” Kagome murmured, she was too ashamed of her own thoughts to make eye contact with him.

She's calling me Mr. Taisho again, meaning it's definitely not alright, right back to square one with this girl again, InuYasha sighed inwardly picking up all the ramen he had dropped on the floor.

Kagome just walked around him murmuring, “You shouldn't eat so much of that ramen Mr. Taisho its not very good for you.”

“Ya I hear that from Kagura and Sango,” he said giving a nervous laugh but either way he still piled the instant noodles into his shopping cart.

Kagome finished her shopping quickly to avoid running into InuYasha again, paid for her food, and left the store trying to juggle four grocery bags and a purse with a sleeping puppy in it. It was not the easiest task in the world and Kagome knew the bread she bought would definitely not be in the best of shape by the time she got home.

InuYasha… she thought with a sigh, if only he wasn't her teacher. Kagome she was a little to deep in thought since she didn't even notice the man coming up next to her on the sidewalk eyeing her purse just before taking firm hold of the arm strap and yanking it right off her shoulder. Kagome was so startled she dropped some of her grocery bags as the man took off down the street with her purse, sad thing was she only had about four dollars left in it, the only other thing in it was a newborn puppy. That was the only reason she screamed when she saw the man take off with Myou.

It was probably Kagome's lucky day, or unlucky depending on how you thought of it, because the thief didn't make it all that far. Before Kagome could even scream for help a white blur ran right by her and caught the man by his hoodie forcing him to stumble backwards. The look on the mugger's face could have made a good baby picture at that moment he was being held off his feet by the collar of his shirt so he was forced to stare in a pair of angry golden eyes.

“I'm only going to ask this once,” InuYasha asked in a hard tone, “Hand me the purse and I won't have to hurt you.”

“Jesus all that for a purse,” the young man muttered shakily handing the purse over to InuYasha, “Just put me down man!”

InuYasha simply let go of the man's collar allowing him to fall to the ground as he walked back to Kagome and gently handed her the purse, “I think the puppy will need to be fed soon, you should really be a bit more careful with him.”

Talk about canine power, he could smell the puppy in the purse, Kagome thought immediately checking on Myou, “Thank you so much Mr. Taisho.”

“Do I have to remind you that I have never been comfortable with people calling me Mr. Taisho,” InuYasha responded lightly as he continued to walk back to his car, “If you need a ride I'll give you one but let me remind you that you still owe me a smile.”

“No I can walk,” Kagome assured once again trying to find a way to comfortably carry her groceries, she nearly dropped them yet again when InuYasha came up, took the extras and loaded them in the back seat of his car.

“Come on you're seriously killing me Miss Higurashi, I don't even know what I did to upset you, but at least let me make it up to you,” the silver haired hanyou said putting Kagome's other bags in his car and opening the front passenger's side so Kagome could get in. When she didn't move InuYasha made the cutest puppy dog eyes (A/N: no pun intended) he could, “Come on Higurashi.”

Kagome couldn't help but crack a small smile, her teacher looked ridicules, “Fine…”

InuYasha Taisho smiled jumping over his car hood to the driver's side as Kagome got in and buckled up, “So am I allowed to ask why you are carrying a puppy in your purse because to be honest I am a little bit curious.”

“One of the dogs at the animal shelter I work at gave birth and rejected him and there was no one else available to care for him so I am,” explained Kagome still not having enough nerve to look her teacher in the eye, “I can't leave him alone for more than two or three hours so I had no choice but to bring him with me.”

He also smells like a demon dog, InuYasha realized glancing at the squeaking ball of white fur that Kagome was stroking rather fondly, but an infant no matter what it species is innocent at birth, a demon raised by a human might not be such a bad thing, besides Kagome seems fond of the pup and telling her that it's a demon would only break her heart. Lord knows she needs someone loyal by her side with the way people treat her at school.

It was easy to find Kagome's home since InuYasha had been there before though he did purposely drive slower than he normally would have and of course he was slightly down hearted when he finally pulled into her driveway.

“Thanks Mr. Taisho - I mean InuYasha, you know you are really to nice to me,” Kagome flushed slightly getting out of the car and grabbing her groceries, “I guess I'll see you at school tomorrow.”

“I told you before it's not a problem Kagome, besides someone needs to keep an eye on the girl that attracts the most trouble,” InuYasha shrugged.

Kagome stood in the driveway clutching her things as she watching InuYasha pull out of the driveway and drive off. Her heart sunk slightly, I shouldn't be thinking about him so fondly he is my teacher for god's sake! He's just supposed to be the person I give my English paper to at school not the guy you have a crush on, besides he's only being nice because he's worried about you, not because he has the same feelings for you.

Kagome wasn't sure what to do; she had not thought ahead about what she was going to do with Myou, she felt like an idiot in the morning for not thinking of it a little sooner. So that morning Kagome was scrambling to figure out something to do since she couldn't keep Myou at home and come back every three hours and she couldn't keep the dog at school since the teachers would never allow her to be bringing a newborn puppy to school every day.

“Myou what am I going to do with you,” she murmured to the pup packing all her homework into her backpack.

“I could have a sudjestion,” a long haired teen said poking his head around the corner of Kagome's room.

Jumping out of her skin Kagome had to fight the urge to scream, “Kouga how on earth did you get in here?”

“Your dad forgot to lock the door before he passed out on the living room floor last night,” Kouga shrugged leaning against the doorframe, “Now as I was saying I have a sudjestion about how to deal with your problem, believe me I was wondering what you were going to do about that little detail. Wolf demons are fast runners, and this is compared among demons so don't take it lightly, if you meet up with me at lunch I can have you hear and back to school before lunch is half over. We may even have enough time to grab some pizza instead of cheap cafeteria burgers, my treat. What do you say Kagome?”

Kagome let out a long relieved sigh, “I'd say you're a lifesaver Kouga.”

“I know, I just thought since this was so important to you I might help out, I mean since I will probably be seeing a lot more of you in the future why shouldn't we be friends,” Kouga's classic wolfish grin surfaced again making Kagome feel slightly uncomfortable, it made her think that Kouga could have anything at all on his mind, it was that type of unreadable smile you would see on a bad guy from a bad action movie. And once again Kagome had a serious feeling that he had a little bit more than friendship on his mind.

“Just let me make sure Myou has had something to eat and we can get going to school,” the raven haired girl said picking up the bundle, “Today is your first day at Shinkon High isn't it?”

“Ya it is I was actually hoping you could help me find the classes they sent me in my timetable.”

“Uh sure who all do you have?”

(A/N: Ok I'm basing Shinkon High on something my school schedule which is four classes per semester that are a bit over an hour long each. That way you finish one credit in five months and you have the other four classes the next semester. I know other schools organize it in different ways but that is how I'm organizing mine.)

“Bristol, Ives, Richard, and Taisho.”

“Science, History, Gym, and English,” Kagome rhymed off the classes in the order Kouga had given them which was also the order of the classes that day. They were exactly the same as hers with the exception of Richard the gym teacher for the senior guys, but she did have gym the same period in gym 2, “Ya you'll be sticking with me most of the day. I'm finished with Myou we can get going.”

00000000000000000000000000000000000

The two of them arrived together at school on time, coincidentally Kouga ended up having the same homeroom as her as well, and they went to first period which was Science with Mr. Bristol. Kouga was not a dumb kid at all he was actually quite good in school and participated fully in class to prove it, and he also glanced over at Kagome every time he got a question right just to see if she was watching.

History had always been Kagome's best subject right alongside English, Kouga was fair at that too, and that class went by fairly similar to Science.

After that Kagome told Kouga which hallways to take to Gym 1 for the guys' gym class before going to gym herself. That day was warm for November so Mrs. Taijiya decided to take advantage of the last few nice days left in the season. That day after warm-ups she called all the girls out to the field where a series of targets had been set up for archery practice while the boys ran track.

“Alright keep your aiming arm strait, your thumb should be out like this, and your other arm should be parallel to the ground,” Mrs. Taijiya instructed giving a quick demonstration to all those who needed a reminder on how to use a bow and arrow, “Ok now we have enough targets and bows for groups of three. I will give you a number and you will go to the target with the corresponding number and the first person will get their bow and arrow ready. Nobody fires until I say nobody even draws the string until I give the go ahead, if you are caught fooling around or firing without my permission you will be running laps for the rest of this class.”

The group of girls nodded signaling their understanding of the rules and guidelines as Sango Taijiya motioned them one by one to go to their targets. It came down to it and Kagome was finally called to a target her stomach dropped because it was her natural luck that Kikyo and one of her friends were getting ready at that very target.

“Look who it is,” Kikyo snickered picking up the bow first and grabbing an arrow, “I think it might actually be safer standing in the archery range than in the safe zone when Kagome shoots.”

Kagome just stood behind the archery line as the teacher called for her students to line up their shots and another yell signaled everyone to fire. A majority of the students got their arrows in the second ring from the center, and Kikyo who was a well rounded athlete in almost everything, got her arrow lodged in the outer regions of the red spot in the middle of the target.

Kikyo turned to her friend and Kagome grinning proudly as she handed the bow to Kagome, “Try not to kill anyone in the soccer field now Kags; I don't see how you can handle a bow and arrow if you can't handle going a weekend without hurting yourself. Though I guess if you didn't get little cuts like the one on the side of your head you wouldn't have a way to get teachers to baby you.”

Taking the bow, grabbing an arrow, and stepping up to the shooting line Kagome took aim when she heard the teacher's instruction. After Kikyo's little comment Kagome was fed right up with Kikyo and her oversized mouth, her anger caused her to pull the string back further than the other girls and amazingly her line was perfect. Once she had been given the go ahead to release her arrow was the first to hit the target landing dead center of the target.

“Congratulations Kagome it looks like we've found something you have a knack for in this class,” Mrs. Taijiya said looking over the results, “Alright next archer!”

Kikyo looked positively stunned that Kagome had done better than her at a class that didn't require a great IQ. Kagome didn't even make eye contact, she didn't need to, and Kagome had a rather broad proud smile inwardly after finally proving to Kikyo she wasn't a complete pushover. Kagome needed to be tough to be able to take the punishment she had taken over her life.
