InuYasha was deep in thought as he walked back to the campsite, he couldn't believe his best friend was mated to his hated older brother. He knew she had thought she was in love with him and had been waiting for him to claim her, but he just didn't think of her that way. He had figured out a while ago that he was still madly in love with Kikyo and was deeply saddened by what had become of her. He knew they could not be together, so he was going to gain their revenge by killing Naraku, hoping it would be enough for her to finally rest in peace. He thought at first that Kagome was Kikyo reborn, but he finally realized that even though Kagome was Kikyo's reincarnation, there couldn't possibly be two people more different from the other. He became Kagome's self appointed guardian once he realized this fact, protecting her from danger and keeping unworthy males, that wanted to mate with her, far away.

He had been doing a good job keeping Kouga away from her, but the thought never crossed his mind that his brother was a danger to her in that sense. He would of kept a closer watch on her if he did, but now that it was done he could admit, if only to himself that Sesshoumaru would be a good mate for her, he was powerful and despite what others thought, InuYasha knew that he harbored deep emotions behind that stoic mask. They would balance each other out, Kagome would shower him with all of her love and affection, something that Sesshoumaru desperately needed, even if he never admitted it, and Sesshoumaru would calm Kagome's fiery temper and give her the commitment she wanted. He grinned while he looked back at them, watching the way Sesshoumaru held on to her so possessively and almost laughed aloud when he thought of his brothers reaction when he found out what kind of fire brand he had caught. He coughed discretely, to cover his laugh before jumping onto his customary branch when he strolled into the campsite.

Sango and Miroku stood up, weapons drawn as soon as they caught sight of Sesshoumaru walking into their campsite with his arm wrapped around Kagome, but soon looked at InuYasha, confused when he didn't attack him. They looked back at Sesshoumaru and finally noticed that Kagome had somehow changed into a youkai. Shippo couldn't take the suspense any longer, when he didn't hear the sounds of a battle taking place, he cautiously moved away from the rock he was hiding behind to see what was going on. He was worried when he saw that Sesshoumaru had his arms around his adoptive mother, but was very confused when he realized that she had changed into a youkai and didn't seem to be scared at all by her current predicament. He called out uncertainly, " Okaa-san what is going on?" His question seemed to break through the shocked and tense silence and the previously silent forest erupted with the sounds of a multitude of questions that demanded answers.

Kagome held Shippo close to her chest, nuzzling him gently, trying to calm him down while also trying to answer her concerned friends questions. Sesshoumaru decided to allow her to explain everything to her friends, but it was becoming difficult to calm his rising anger towards these humans that were distressing his mate greatly. He looked down at the scared and confused kit that his mate was holding so tenderly and couldn't help the surprise that he felt when he found out she had adopted him as her own. He knew his mate was special and this was just one other reason that proved to him that she was different from all the other humans he had encountered, besides his ward, Rin. She had all the qualities he desired in a female and was powerful enough to protect their adopted children and the pups they would have together in the future.

Kagome finally calmed everyone down enough to explain that she was now Sesshoumaru's mate and yes she had done it willingly. Sesshoumaru couldn't help but smirk arrogantly after this comment and when she saw it she snorted delicately. He growled, but she ignored him to finish telling her friends that he would now be coming along with them on their shard hunts and he and InuYasha had decided to try to get along. Sango and Miroku looked at her intently, trying to be sure that what she said was true and it was what she wanted, but before they could ask the question that was most prominently in their minds, the previously quiet kitsune, piped up asking, " But Okaa-san, how did you become a youkai?" Sango and Miroku stayed silent, waiting patiently for Kagome's answer since it was the question they wanted answered the most.

Kagome looked up at her mate asking, " Sesshoumaru do you think you could explain that to them?" He kissed her forehead saying, " Hai." Sango and Miroku couldn't believe the tenderness that he showed to Kagome, they looked at each other, both thinking, " Maybe there is more to him than what we thought." They quickly gave him their attention when they felt his stare on them both. Sesshoumaru began when he was sure he had their full attention because he would not be explaining it to them more than once, " When a youkai mates with a human, the mark generally only extends their life for the same amount of time as their mate, but to humans that have powers of any kind, it transforms them into the same type of youkai that their mate is. I do not know the specifics as to why this happens, just that it does." He waited for them to absorb this new information before turning his mate toward him and saying, " I need to go retrieve my companions, I have left them alone to long already but I will return shortly." Kagome nodded, showing that she understood, before kissing him passionately and telling him good bye.

Kagome watched him go before turning to her friends with a happy smile on her face, but only for it to become a worried frown, seconds later when she felt two jewel shards coming towards them fast. Sango watched her friends smile turn to a frown, wondering what could of upset her she asked, " Kagome, what is wrong?" Kagome turned towards her and was going to answer, but before she could, InuYasha jumped down from his tree, growling out, " Kouga! "
