Chapter 3

InuYasha walked down the crowded street with his school bag hanging on his fingers. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the top, showing his neck and the necklace around it but what was decorating the chain was still hidden by his clothes. Other students on their way home walked around him in groups or two and two. He could hear their gossiping as they passed him.

“Are you going out on Friday?”

“Yeah. My boyfriend is taking me out to celebrate our six months.”

“Lucky you, boyfriend and all. I'm so jealous~.”

“What about the guy you met yesterday?”

“Justin? No way. *Giggle*. He's not my type.”

“Really? I thought you looked good together.”

“Hey! Want to check out the new game?”

“Sure buddy. I have to buy a CD too.”

“Do you think she'll call me?”

“Go for it man.”

He couldn't suppress the sigh as his eyes fell to the ground before his feet. Then he happened to pass by a news stand and checked out the head lines. One particular caught his attention.

'Body found, victim connected to the Yakuza.'

The teenager stared at the words but for some reason he could only see the two first and the last word connect. He knew the family handled their dead with out most respect and would never let the media catch on so the closer family could grieve in peace. So that meant another had died. Who? Who was it? Not someone he knew. Not someone from his family.

He was thinking of everyone he could remember. It couldn't be...

“If it isn't the brat?” said a voice behind him.

InuYasha jerked from his thoughts and turned around. There he saw with great surprise Sesshoumaru standing with a bag containing groceries securely in his arm. He wore his hair down naturally and InuYasha was surprised to see the normally water combed hair fall in his golden brown eyes while the rest framed his face in even cuts all the way down to the back of his neck. It was actually cut in different lengths all the way up to the crown of his head.

He wore a plain blue jumper with black pants hugging his legs. His face was a soft mix between a smile and a smirk.

“Who are you calling a brat?” InuYasha asked with a hint of fake anger.

The smirk got wider on his lips. “A brat will always be a brat.”

“Shut up. Who are you to talk? You talk like an old man.” InuYasha tried to tease him.

“Just a brat would think of a comeback like that.”

By now InuYasha was seriously fuming inside. “What do you know? What are you doing here anyway?”

Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow. “I do live during the day too. My life doesn't rotate around the bar and night. Besides, even the God's of the night have to eat during the day.”

“Who is a God of the night? Where?” asked InuYasha with a questioning look on his face while faking looking around as if trying to catch sight of said person.

Sesshoumaru knocked InuYasha on the head in annoyance with his free hand before he let out a sigh. “Are you on your way home?”

InuYasha lowered his hand that had massaged the 'soar' spot on his head and gave him a nod. “Yeah. There is a family crisis right now so I have to be home soon and I can't come to the bar tonight either. Dad won't let me out tonight!”

“That's a pity. I have to work tonight so I was hoping you would come and entertain me again.”

“Screw you!” hissed InuYasha.

Sesshoumaru smirked before he leaned forward until his lips almost touched the teens ear. “Every night.” his breath caressed InuYasha's ear and he lingered for a moment before withdrawing. When they came face to face again he was greeted with a blush on InuYasha's cheeks.

He frowned for a moment as if he was pondering something. “InuYasha.” he spoke and drew the teens attention. “You're...” he lifted his hand and put a closed hand against his chin. “Surprisingly innocent aren't you?”

InuYasha's eyes went wide at the implication and his blush went even darker. “So what?” he asked while looking straight into the others eyes as if daring him to insult him.

This time the man smiled genuinely and his eyes were even warm. “I'm not making fun of you. That's something to be admired.”

InuYasha felt how his heart fluttered in his chest. Admire. Sesshoumaru was admiring him.

“I have to go so see you another time.” He began to step around InuYasha when suddenly he stopped with a sudden, “That's right.” he picked in his pocket before pulling up a small paper card. “Here.” he said while giving it to the surprised teenager.

InuYasha took it and looked at it. It contained Sesshoumaru's name and a number that looked very much like...

“This is--”

“Call me sometime if you are feeling lonely. If I don't pick up then I'm most likely working and will call you back as soon as I can. See you!” Sesshoumaru sprinted away down the road and were gone in the masses of people before InuYasha could say anything else.

He looked down at the card and the number. He almost felt how tears were welling up in his eyes and a smile spread over his face. He held to small card to his chest as he looked after Sesshoumaru even though he couldn't see him.

Maybe, just maybe, could he hope for something more.

The trip back home seemed to be shorter than usual, like he was jumping on clouds, and he was still smiling when he entered the house.

“I'm home.” he called cheerfully and almost immediately he could hear footsteps coming through the house. When he rounded a corner he came face to face with his father.

“Dad, I--”

Taisho embraced InuYasha in a tight hug before he could say anything else.

InuYasha was so surprised that he dropped his bag and wrapped his arms around his father automatically.

“Son. Ibiki is dead.”

InuYasha didn't move. “Wha...?”

“Ibiki is gone. He was found this morning by the riverside down town.”

“What are you saying, dad? I talked to him last night. He made me hot chocolate before going to bed. We promised to go see the new action movie this weekend. He's going to help me with my homework.”

“Son. He's passed away.” Taisho's hand's held tighter onto his son as he repeated it. Other members of the family began to fill the space around them, all of them were either crying or looked heartbroken.

“Stop lying.” InuYasha tried to step away but the strong hold on him prevented him. “Where's Ibiki? Where is he?”

“He's dead.”

“NO!”

“HE'S GONE INUYASHA!! HE'S NOT EVER COMING BACK TO LIFE!!” Taisho all but slapped his son in frustration. This made InuYasha stop struggling and they just stood there, unmoving until InuYasha's leg gave way under him and Taisho did his best to take them to the floor gently but it ended with a loud thump when InuYasha's knees hit it.

“Ibiki.” InuYasha whimpered. “Ibiki.” his eyes began to water up and blur his vision. “Ibiki.” his shoulders began to shake as the tears fell down his face and down his throat. “Ibiki!” he finally wailed while clinging to his dad.

The parent held onto his only child while his own tears began to gather and fall. There were probably no one in the whole house that didn't cry that day.

-o-o-o-o-

In the alley stood a man while molested a woman. She was gladly enjoying it and didn't resist. The man was busy feeling her breasts that neither noticed the shadow behind them nor the gun in his hand.

BANG

The man dropped dead again her with his blood splatted over her face. Even in her drunk state she sobered enough to understand the severity of her situation. She gasped for breath as she tried to scream but failed long before she could voice a single note in her fear.

BANG

Both of the fell to the ground in a heap of limbs and the killer walked away.

-o-o-o-o-

InuYasha lay in his bed clutching the cover to his face. His eyes were red from all the crying and he was just feeling ill from it now. His mind was empty and all he knew of was that he felt horrible. His father had to carry him to bed since in his distressed state had exhausted himself.

There were a soft knock on the door and an old face looked in, his beard was trimmed so he looked like more like a sailor than a yakuza.

“Your bag, son.” he put it next to the door. “Rest now. Your pa' is calling your school tomorrow to let them know you will be absent.”

All InuYasha could do was mumble one little 'thank you' before the door closed again.

He stared at his school bag for many long moments until he rose from the bed and walked slowly over to it. He sat down in front of it and picked up the card with Sesshoumaru's number. He stared at it numbly for a while, not really knowing why he had picked it up, but somehow he just wanted to hear Sesshoumaru's voice.

He took out his cell phone and crawled over to his bed and sat with his back resting against it. He held his phone in one hand and the card in his other. His head was fuzzy when he pushed the numbers and then made sure that he had gotten them all right and stared at the display until the light behind it went off.

He then pushed his thumb on the green button to light the phone and then once more to call. He could hear it dial the number on the line and there were a beep signalling that he were waiting for someone to pick up the other end. He raised it to his ear.

His gut told him that Sesshoumaru would unlikely pick up since he said he was working tonight. Signal after signal went by and no one answered. He was about to hang up when there were a sudden click on the other side and a voice answered.

“Hello.”

InuYasha's breath caught in his throat.

“Who's calling?”

It was undoubtedly Sesshoumaru's voice and just that made new tears gather in his eyes.

“InuYasha?” the voice asked.

“Mmm.” was all he could get out.

“What's wrong? You sound a little strange.”

“.....Nothing.”

“Doesn't sound nothing to me but if you want to play it that way then you don't have to tell me.”

How could he tell him? That a family member had died? He would no doubt ask other questions that would force him to tell Sesshoumaru that his family was Yakuza. He didn't want that. He would never tell Sesshoumaru who his family were, he would rather die.

“Aren't you suppose to work?” InuYasha asked in a slightly hoarse voice.

“I am. Manager sent me back to the storage to pick out some bottles. You do know there is more to a bartender than just mixing drinks.”

“Not until now.”

“Brat. I didn't expect you to call me tonight.”

“Me neither.” InuYasha admitted as he heard something that sounded like bottles on the other side. He guessed Sesshoumaru continued to work even though they were talking. He was disturbing his work.

“So... you called without being able to say why?”

“G-guess so.” he felt like an idiot. Why had he called?

“Did you perhaps want Phone Sex?”

“Huh?” InuYasha blinked once before his face went bright red and he gritted his teeth. “Who would want that with you?” he snapped back, his previous embarrassment forgotten and replaced with a new.

“Why not? I've been told I'm very good over the phone. Wanna try?”

“Like hell idiot.” InuYasha glared at the phone, “Don't get to full of yourself. Besides, I'm not a woman.”

“Don't worry about details. It's no different from masturbating on your own. Only sexier.”

“Ma-ma-ma..--” InuYasha was so embarrassed that he couldn't even say the word.

Laughter filled the other end and he reached his beet red ears with clarity.

“You really are innocent. I like you more and more now.”

InuYasha's heart skipped a beat.

There were a pause of silence before, “Feeling better.” came the gentle voice from the other side.

InuYasha had to smile. “Yes. Thank you.”

“Any time. You know, you can always call me no matter what it's about. School, family, friends, girls.”

“Yes, I understand.”

“Sex.”

“Fuck you!”

“Love to but I'm working.”

“Pervert.”

“All people are.”

“Not all.”

“Then tell me that even you haven't had a single wet dream or daydream.”

“....”

“See.”

“Bastard.”

“Brat.”

“Old man.”

“Virgin.”

“Fuck you.”

“Wanna come and do it?”

“Do it yourself.”

“Hahahaha.....”

They talked for a few more minutes until Sesshoumaru had to run back to the bar but InuYasha promised to call again.

When InuYasha hung up he felt his heart being lighter than earlier. Ibiki's death still hung close to his heart but it didn't hurt just as much.

To Be Continued.
