I’ll Meet You in Divorce Court, Sexy

Chapter One

Kagome didn’t understand why people married. It wasn’t a matter of love. It was a case of lust. She had been through so many Divorces in her small lifetime. Or rather, she’d been the counselor, sorting out the complex emotional difficulties in a thankless practice. She had to deal with property disputes, custody over the unlucky child and the discussions that turned into heated discussions which lead to the violence over who kept trivial possessions. Kagome had the patience of a Saint.

It was just one great big frustration.

But what would give most people a migraine, Kagome handled it with supreme delicacy and a tightly reined temper. Kagome Higurashi loved her job as a Divorce Lawyer. Her eyebrows rose as she stared at the computer screen in front of her and then without another thought to the brightly lit screen, she pushed it closed. Please. She wasn’t cheap and she didn’t work for cheap. She was one of the Top Divorce Lawyers and sometimes her price was thousands. The description and the price range of $2,000 that had been on her computer screen seconds ago was ridiculous. That would barely cover the cost of the Court Room, much less the broken bones that would no doubt produce from that divorce settlement. Honestly, teens shouldn’t marry—they were the worst.

A tall, dark haired man was walking into the lobby just as she stepped out of the elevator. He stopped instantly when he saw her, his face spreading into a cheeky grin. “The happiest time of anyone’s life is just after the first divorce.”

Kagome rolled her eyes. “Miroku, just one day, please.” For almost a month now Miroku had a daily “Happy-Go Divorce Quote”. She followed him into the small break-room and beat him to the coffee maker and that, in high-heels. “What are you so happy about?”

“What do you think?” Miroku probed his shoulder against the wall. “Three Divorces in three months.” And that was a record for him. Normally it took around three months to a year for just one Divorce to be fully settled. Miroku was on a roll this time.

“Is that so? Please tell me you didn’t take those offers?” Kagome knew, knew Miroko wasn’t that naïve. The look on his face, however, proved otherwise. She groaned and dropped a beige folder onto the counter. “I declined those offers for a reason, Miroku. You were cheated. Naraku San-Takamishi filed divorce for a low price, not only that, but in the memo he didn’t want to leave that, and I quote, ‘bitch’ anything. From his records, hers and the description of what should go to whom and not, he wasn’t owed anything.”

Miroku shrugged but there was no disguising the uneasy look on his face. What, disappoint? “That’s still a lot of money to me, Kagome. Plenty, in fact. Not everyone lives as comfortably as you—“

“Not everyone takes low incomes like you, either. You know damn well you were cheated out of a big sum. Did you at least receive the back payment?”

“Yea—“ He held his hands up defensively. “—and he didn’t get a dime from her. I know what I’m doing, Kagome. Jesus. He wasn’t too happy about it, considering he paid me to do the job of consummating his winnings, but there wasn’t much to work from where he was concerned. The credit debts, the mortgages and his car…Well, she paid for it…What the hell was he thinking?” Miroku rubbed the back of his head. “I did the best I could, being his defense, but he had to know things didn’t look good for him. Trust me,” He took a sip of his coffee. “I told him to write down for half, not all. People like him just don’t—“

“Yes, Demons just don’t know how to listen. We have every right just as they do.” Naraku’s unreasonable rate wasn’t the only reason she’d denied his request. It might be unethical and even raciest but the moment she’d seen his Race, she’d closed his file without a second thought. He was a half demon and she did not work with demons. It didn’t matter if he was half human. Demons were demons either way. Wolf Demon, Dog Demon, Wind Demon, Fox Demon, they were all the same. They were assholes and thought themselves above society and she’d be damned if she had to put up with their bullshit. They were all the same.

“You’re an idiot, Miroku.” Kagome called out over her shoulder as she walked out of the break room and towards the stairs. Her office was on the second floor. She was one step from the staircase when the front doors were sent swinging wide. A black haired woman strode through the glass doors, her shoulders back, and her walk confident. Needless to say, she was beautiful—elegant. And pissed.

“I won’t settle for less. By god, I’ll take everything he owns. The Land, his car…” She was rattling on about something as she looked around, her strangely colored eyes searching, taking in everything. Her eyes landed on shining, red tinted eyes landed on Kagome and recognition flared in them. The woman lifted her hand and pointed at Kagome as she switched directed and headed her way. “You, Ms. Hirurashi. I want you.”

What the hell was the woman going on about and how did she know her? Wait, Kagome corrected herself. That was a stupid question. Of course the woman would know her. She was well known, considering her job. As the woman came closer, Kagome caught the flash of her eyes, the unusual color. No wonder the woman was uniquely beautiful. She was a Demon. Her eyes narrowed as the Demon approached her; the only reason she would be here was for a Divorce Attorney. The Demon could think twice if she was going to be that Attorney—

A check was flashed before her eyes, sighed by the Demon but no amount on it. “Name your price, Ms. Higurashi.”

As Kagome stared at the blank check and then up at the Demon, a Wind Demon, to be specific, she realized she had a new preference where her clients were concerned.
