Author’s Note
So, I don’t know if I mentioned this before but I find that I write much better late at night when everyone is asleep and I have ME time. I wanted to write SO BAD during the day today so I did. And I got maybe, 500 words done. What, half of this chapter? So, as I was going over it around 11pm I was thinking, “No, I do not want the chapter to start like that. I don’t like how the middle was sounding…” So I had to re-write it ALL. But I did it! Hope you enjoy this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Chapter Two
She was rich. That was the main thing on Kagome’s mind as she met with Kagura again. Compared to most of the Demon’s out there, though, her new found fortune was nothing. It didn’t surprise her that. Kagura hadn’t so much as blinked an eye when she had seen the price scribbled across the check. She wasn’t naïve; Kagome knew what price was too high and what price wasn’t but she wasn’t going to pass up this kind of opportunity. She hadn’t recognized the Demon when she had approached her. When she’d learned her new client’s name, however, that was an entire different matter.
Kagura Miu-Takashai.
Formally known as Kagura Miu before her marriage, Kagome noted the last name. It suited the Wind Demon. “Mi” which meant ‘beautiful’ and “u” which meant ‘feather’. Takashai had come later in her name when she had married Sesshomaru Takashai—Kagome glanced down at the file in her hand—three-hundred years ago. Jesus, no wonder the woman wanted a divorce. She noted the name again. So Kagura had kept her previous last name as well. She arched an eyebrow at the stack of information in the file and then closed her hand around it, snapping it closed in the process. “While I appreciate the thought of you working out all of this information on your own ahead of time, I’m afraid I’ll still have to go over this with you. I can’t just take this by your word.”
Kagura waved dismissively. “Yes, yes. Do whatever you have to do. I just thought I would give you the information before-hand. Everything you need to know is in there.”
Was that so? Kagome knew that was never the case. Things were never that easy. Both parties tended to leave out the necessities of little secrets that involved themselves. Some of those things were priority to the case. Sadly, Kagome knew she couldn’t take the file straight to court without first discussing it with Kagura and Sesshomaru’s Lawyer.
“Everything I want and everything I want done is written down in that file. All you need to do is go through it and—“ Kagura started but Kagome shook her head, amused at the high-handedness that Kagura took the situation. She was the experienced Lawyer here, not Kagura.
“I’m sorry, like I mentioned before, we’ll have to discuss the does and don’ts regarded here. I’ve already listed three things here that will hinder your case—no offense, Mrs. Miu.”
Kagura lifted her head and sighed. “Please, please do not call me that. Kagura is fine.”
Kagome nodded. She wasn’t too keen on the knowledge that the would be ex-husband was none other than Sesshomaru Takashai, a well renowned Demon. Kagome would have liked to think that she was dealing with just Kagura in the case but that was just wishful thinking. She would have to deal with Kagura but she would do that gladly. She’d have to deal and work her way around Sesshomaru because she somehow knew he was going to make things difficult, give his Demon reputation. Then she would have to deal and work things over with Sesshomaru’s Lawyer. She was ready for this, more than ready. At the rate of money she was being paid, she was willing to get her hands dirty.
“Whose bank account is my payment coming out of, if you don’t mind?” Kagome hoped to God the woman was smart enough to use her own money. Using her soon-to-be ex-husband’s money to pay for HER Lawyer wasn’t a good idea.
“My money. I don’t need that egotistical bastard for anything. The money I paid you was from my own personal stash. I’ve had my own bank account away from our marriage in case something like this happened. I was right, wasn’t I?”
Smart woman.
“Good.” Smart woman, Kagome thought again and nodded her head. “At the rate things are going between the two of you, from what I’m assuming, he could and most likely would accost you of fraud and have the money withdrawn back into his account. I’d like to keep things as clean as possible in this case.” Being that she had never dealt with Demons in a court setting before, Kagome really didn’t know what to expect. But she’d win this. “Now, I’ll need Sesshomaru’s Lawyer to call me so I can discuss the terms of what’s going on and we can work through the misunderstandings and then I can get back to you.”
Kagome stood up and Kagura followed suit. She pulled a white card from her smooth, suede jacket pocket and handed it to Kagura. “Have his Lawyer call me at that number and we can forward to the proceedings.” Kagura hadn’t told her the reason behind the divorce but Kagome would dive into that problem later. She did know, though, that it had to be more complex than any humans divorce. Jesus, she already knew that.
“Thank you. I know you’ll do that bastard over me.” Kagura couldn’t resist. “I hate his stock rigid ass.”
Kagome arched her eyebrow at the choice of words but didn’t say anything. After three-hundred years, of course, there would be a little hatred there. She couldn’t deny that she found Kagura amusing. This was going to be…interesting, if anything. Different, no doubt bothersome.
Kagura turned to leave. There was a reason she had chosen Kagome. The human was very well versed in what she did. She had the experience and professionalism. Male and female alike that had left the courtroom with her in their stride had left with the winnings. She had been duly warned that Kagome was likely to decline her offer. Was that so? What human refused the amount of money she had been willing to throw around? She would have given up her Chevrolet Corvette, if that’s what it would have taken. Thank the God’s it hadn’t come down to that.
But no, all she’d had to do was wave a blank check in front of the humans face and she’d had her.
She couldn’t wait to tell Sesshomaru. He didn’t stand a hell of a chance.
Kagome watched as Kagura strode out the revolving doors, phone in hand. She may be ‘rich’ now but she had a hell of a way to go before this case was settled. Dealing with those demons weren’t going to be easy. Divorces were never easy to begin with. She heard a door near the front office open the instant Kagura sped down the street and then Miroku was stalking, Sango on his heels.
She had known Sango for the entirety of ten years. The entire time she’d been in Divorce Law. Sango had been at the top of her game when Kagome had by-passed her somewhere along the way. Who would have known?
She saluted the two headed her way even as she passed them, a grin on her face. “I’m leaving. I have a lot of work to do.”
“Tell me you didn’t take her up on her offer.” Sango called out over Miroku’s shoulder. She didn’t say it as if she didn’t want Kagome to have the opportunity. She just hadn’t expected Kagome to accept it because knowing Kagome; she worked with humans and humans only. They both stared at Kagome dumbly as she waved a check over her shoulder. They couldn’t see what the check said but Kagome was flaunting it before she dropped it in her purse.
All Kagome said was, “I’m rich.” And left through the revolving doors.
Kagome was two steps out the door when her cell phone vibrated against her thigh. She flipped the edges of her jacket up around her neck to brace herself against the icy wind and then lifted her cell phone. The unfamiliar number flashed at her and she lifted it to her ear.
“Higurashi, yes?”
“May I speak to Kagome Higurashi, please?”
The voice was male. Deep and unfamiliar. “Speaking. May I ask whose calling?”
“Yes, this is Inuyasha Talenashi.” The voice started in her ear and Kagome sighed. Yes, as if that name helped. She didn’t know him. She opened her mouth to let him know he had the wrong number when he spoke again.
“I’m Sesshomaru Takashai’s Lawyer. I was just faxed your number and I was wondering if we could meet to go over the arrangements?”
Ah, so that explained it. Not a wrong number after all. Kagura didn’t waste time. Kagome checked her watch. She’d just gotten off work, an hour early but she didn’t have any prior engagements. She nodded and shifted the phone between her ear and shoulder as she worked her gloves on. “Yes. I’m just leaving work. If it’s to your convenience we can…” Kagome lifted her head to look at the street she was on and the Café across the street. “…we can meet at Hojo’s Café, across from 4th Street.”
She heard a deep chuckle sound through the phone before he spoke. “Sounds great. I’m on 4th as it turns out, so I can just walk over there and meet you.”
After she said her goodbye Kagome dropped her phone in her pocket and flexed her glove covered fingers against the cold and hurried across the road before the light changed. It was a busy day and for once she was glad she hadn’t driven. She ducked her head as she stepped into the warm interior of the Café. She saw him at once—she knew it was Him. He was the only professionally decent dressed man in the place. Considering his job, he had to be. She didn’t let her smile slip as she greeted him, but on the inside she was cursing her bad luck.
Inuyasha was a Demon; if the little dog ears on the top of his head were anything to go by. What the hell? She’d agreed to work for one Demon and now she had to deal with three?
