Chapter Three

Inuyasha wasn’t expecting the young woman that greeted him. No, he’d been expecting one of the older models, someone late in their 50’s, at the least. This woman, what, was maybe in her late 20’s? He had expected Kagura to pick someone like herself and in an unprofessional manner the thought that came to mind was, ‘someone with a stick up their ass’. He wasn’t naïve though. Kagura had money and she wouldn’t just throw away her money on some cheap Lawyer. It was between the two of them to try to work things out between these two divorcees.

He stood automatically upon her approach and offered his hand. “Inuyasha Talenashi, nice to meet you.” Her hand was small compared to his, his almost dwarfing her smaller one.

“Kagome Higurashi.” Kagome smiled. She could do this. This was what she was being paid for. She tried to look on the bright side. So far, Kagura had proven her preference of demons to be a little off track. She could only hope that Talenashi proved the same.

“So I’m assuming this is your first time working with Demons?”

And she’d just been proven wrong. Shot down before they’d even started. She arched an eyebrow as she took her seat and—shockingly, he proved her wrong in the manners where demons were concerned—he pushed her chair towards the table seconds before she sat down so she was already there. “Thank you and you’ve assumed right.” Keeping mental scores, Kagome gave him one point. He had manners. “May I ask how you’ve come to that conclusion?”

He chuckled, the sound light. “I read your file. All of your previous cases have been with humans.”

Jesus, how had Kagura forwarded the information so fast? She hadn’t expected his call so soon, much less for him to go over her personal work file. She didn’t blame him though. She’d return the favor when she was alone. “Yes, then as you know the only experience I’ve had has been with humans.” Kagome leaned back in her chair and crossed her legs. She could have sworn she’d seen him somewhere. He looked familiar but she couldn’t place him. She knew it wasn’t from another Firm—she would have remembered him; considering the small dog ears. That wasn’t it. Then it hit her.

“Are you kin to Sesshomaru Takahashi?” If so, things could get a little out of hand. A family Lawyer working for the direct Family wasn’t always ethical. Most of the time they would think of only the welfare of their own family. Kagome noticed the same features. They both had the same smooth skin and long, silver white hair. Except Sesshomaru didn’t sport those cute little dog ears.

Inuyasha chuckled. “No, but that question doesn’t come as a surprise. It’s happened many times before and this will not be the last. If it helps any—“ If she could understand this point of view. “—we’re both Dog Demon, well, I’m half, so we’re not kin of body but of Soul.”

Ah, yes. Most demons had a deep sense where their faith was concerned. It did explain it though, if they were from the same species of demon, then yes. “Good. I can’t honestly say I would be happy with the knowledge if you were kin to Him. That could present a problem. Now, I haven’t discussed the reason for the divorce with Kagura yet but she has made it clear what she wants.” Unethical in that and not the right rout to go. “She’s stated that…” She looked over the list and started rambling a few things off the list. “She wants the house, the Western Lands, his mokomoko.” She almost snorted at that. Going after his fur was just spiteful, not to mention childish.

Inuyasha sighed and folded his arms over his chest as he studied the human female. She was a professional versified. He was glad. He didn’t want to go up against someone who couldn’t handle this case. But he had the feeling she didn’t know just exactly what she was getting into. Things could get a little out of hand where she was concerned. If he knew the Demon side of the world—and he did—she really had no idea. He cleared his throat and nodded towards the ongoing list. “Sesshomaru said something along the same lines but was straight to the point.” He opened the file containing Sesshomaru’s information and looked at her over the top as he spoke, quoting exactly what Sesshomaru had put down as his—what he wanted.

“Everything.”

Kagome sighed, barely refraining from making a comment that would have no doubt insulted him. ‘Demons.’ That just proved how mind-numbing this case was going to be. Long and brutal. They would both have to work with their clients to make them see the reason behind compromise.

“Sesshomaru did give me an ideal cause for the divorce but he said that was just another reason to end it.” Not only that, but this would give Sesshomaru leverage. After all, that’s what he was here for. To defend his client. “She cheated.”

“Excuse me?” Kagome started, frowning.

“They’ve been married for over three-hundred years but it was recent and according to Sesshomaru, more than once. Sesshomaru informed me—“ Moot and to the point, that Kagura had slept with some other man and that he wanted that used against her in the case. “—that Kagura had and I quote, ‘broken the vows’ of their marriage.”

Now that was some very important information that Kagura had declined to tell her. “She cheated?”

Wasn’t that what he’d just said? “Yes, with some man named Naraku—“

Naraku?”

Inuyasha closed the folder and slid it back into his briefcase. “I take it you know this man?”

“Not personally, no.” There was only one man on earth with that name. “But he was almost a client of mine.” Almost her ass. Small world after all. Why hadn’t Kagura informed her of this? Kagome couldn’t honestly say it was a good thing that she’d learned this from the Defense. “Well, that aside we can deal with Sesshomaru and Kagura separately. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have them in the same room until necessary.”

“Agreed, but before we take things further I have a few questions for you.” Inuyasha was sure of the fact that she didn’t know what she was getting herself into. He didn’t doubt her abilities where the case was concerned but working in a demon case, there was more to it than just meeting with the client and Defense. Much more.

“You do know the difference between a demon Court and a human’s?”

She hadn’t even realized there was a difference. Going to court was going to court. “I didn’t know there was a difference.” Law school hadn’t exactly went over anything out of the ordinary and demons, well, they were out of the ordinary where humans were concerned.

“There is a big difference. Our Court can get a little…” Inuyasha paused, trying to think of the word to describe his world. “…violent. Our entire Court is made up of Demons.”

He was warning her, Kagome realized. How had she gone from one demon to three and now, possibly, fifty or more? Well, hell. Still, that didn’t throw her off. Not even the fact that she would be the only human there. “After I speak more with Kagura I’ll give you a call and then we can go into detail.” She smiled, her look almost innocent as she stood and offered her hand to him. “I can take care of myself.”

Inuyasha followed suit and leaned across the table to take her hand in a farewell shake. He closed his hand around hers and then cursed, jerking his hand back as he felt a mild burning sensation in his palm. The subtle flow of power that he’d just felt was fading. He jerked his gaze up to hers and cursed even more at the innocent but amused expression on her face.

My ass she could handle herself, Inuyasha thought. She could handle herself just fine. Hell, she was a Priestess.
