Author’s Note:
I try to get out an update every day. I, personally, like recent updates when I’m reading a story and am pretty deep into it. I mean, if you go for weeks on end without an update you kind of lose interest in the story and if you go back when an update is finally admitted, you don’t have the gist of what’s going on. If I can’t make an update every day, I’ll try to do it every other day. I’m sure most of you are like, “We’re lucky you update as quick as you do!”. That’s just how I am! My last two days have been full. My 8 month old has PINK EYE! He’s teething, has constant fevers from that and just whiney. It’s no fun for him which means it’s no fun for me! So bear with me! -Tear- So I’ll be getting around. Thank you all for continuously reading this story. By the way, check out these pictures! I just can’t resist! Lol.

Chapter Four
Honestly, Kagome had had no idea that the Demon Court existed. She didn’t even know where it was. Asking Kagura was an option, but learning the location of the court was second priority. She had plenty of time for that. She had, however, only months to learn everything about the two divorcees and to bring up her end of the case. And the matter of Naraku. It was a mere coincidence, that name. She had put two and two together, thinking that Miroku’s Naraku had been Kagura’s Naraku. That hadn’t been the case. The name “Naraku” had seemed uncommon enough and she was right. That name was one of a kind and there was only one man with such a name. He did, however, have a brother who looked almost identically like him. That would make for a court case alright. The man whom Naraku had worked for hadn’t been “the” Naraku. He’d been using his brother’s name.
She’d have to get Miroku up to detail on that. Not only could he get the man in question for fraud, but he’d get a good lump sum of money in return. It was a win-win situation. That brought the matter of the real Naraku to hand. So she hadn’t met him. She was sure she would, though, considering Sesshomaru wanted Kagura brought up for charges on adultery.
Kagome sighed and rubbed her temples. That alone was something that could put a dent in Kagura’s case. And another notch against Demons. Humans had a tendency to stray, she wouldn’t deny that, but she would have thought that being how demons lived so long, they would have learned the tact of honor.
Her hand moved, black ink scribbling across the notebook to her right. She already had three pages of notes taken but that wasn’t enough. With her normal cases it took maybe, five to eight sheets. She wasn’t even half way done with this. Kagura’s history and background was royal and epic, to say the least. She was the youngest of her siblings, Kanna, her oldest, was very well known throughout the World. So Kagura came from ‘Royalty’. That was fine for her. She was likely to get a bonus pay.
Kagura had a long, long history. Usually, she had no problem looking into the information regarding her client’s lives but Kagura had years—hundreds—of years; that meant twice as much information to go over. The only thing that kept her mildly relaxed was the Concord in the wine glass beside her.
The small bar was exclusive; otherwise, she wouldn’t have gotten the membership. Other than her own home, she didn’t have much of a place to relax. This was the latter. She could do the work at her house but here, she had wine. Why she didn’t keep herself stocked up, she didn’t know. That was just something she kept forgetting. The people here didn’t bother her and she didn’t bother him. The bartender would occasional ask her, “You needed anything, Kags?”
She really hated that name but she’d let him get away with it.
The phone in her jacket pocket vibrated, jolting her out of her amusing. Flipping to the next page in Kagura’s file, she ignored the phone. Whoever it was could leave a voicemail. Obviously they’d taken the hint after six rings.
So Kagura had been born in the Feudal Era. “Jesus, woman.” Kagome murmured. Kagura was old. What was it like to live so long? After a hundred years or so, Kagome would have been ready to commit suicide if she had lived that long. What kept these demons going? Year after year…
The phone vibrated to life in her pocket again. She sighed and dug the phone out and pressed a button before hugging it between her cheek and shoulder as she flipped through the heavy file in her hands. Needless to say, there was a first time for everything. Kagura was her first Demon client and this was the biggest file of ‘information’ she’d ever had. “Kagome Higurashi.” She said curtly.
“Hello.” The smooth, familiar male voice sounded in her ear. “It’s Inuyasha. I was wondering if you wanted to get together to go over some of those files.”
While Kagome knew they needed to discuss the case, she really didn’t feel like meeting him across town tonight. It was, she paused and gave a glance at her watch, almost 8:00pm. “I’m busy at the moment but, how does tomorrow evening sound?” She shifted in her seat and crossed her legs beneath the short bar top, and lifted the wine glass to her lips, taking a small sip.
“Tomorrow sounds good.” Came the warm, amused voice beside her, echoing in her ear over the phone. “But I find it hard to believe that—“ His nose twitched and she realized he was taking in the scent of her wine. “—that Concord is keeping you so busy.”
Kagome felt a hot blush rise to her cheeks as Inuyasha ended the call and turned in the seat he’d just taken, facing her, grinning. Jesus, the man had just caught her red handed. First, he’d cause her deliberately ignoring the call. She hadn’t known it was him, but all the same. Second, she’d declined his offer when she’d been more than able to take him up on his offer of going through the material, especially when she had her files with her. It was prior to their Cases.
He’d caught her off guard twice already. He wouldn’t get a third.
She smiled and lifted her glass upward in a toast. “Caught red-handed, I see.” Not really. She had been going over Kagura’s information, as was testimony of the opened folder lying on the bar top.
“Yes, but I won’t hold it against you.” Inuyasha teased. He had been surprised to see her from across the bar. It didn’t surprise him though, that she was here. There were no low life’s here. No trash. This was upscale. He’d been instantly amused when she’d ignored his first call. He could have just walked across the room and seated himself beside here and they could have taken up conversation then and there. It was for his benefit and amusement to call her. He never did anything the old fashioned way. From the looks, they’d both had business on their mind.
He dropped his beige folder beside hers. “Sesshomaru added another priority to his list. I told him I’d speak to you in regards about it. He was a little aggressive when I told him that a compromise would have to be made if the Judge found no reason to change the current circumstances…”
She arched an eyebrow, keenly waiting.
“They have a child. Her name is Rin. Eight years old.”
So that it explained it. Kagome hadn’t read that far into Kagura’s marriage. A child was going to make the divorce much harder if they each wanted custody. Kagome knew that the mother was usually granted custody unless she was proven to be unfit for the majority care giver.
Kagome nodded. Inuyasha handed her his file and she flipped one of the pages two Rin’s profile and paused. She glanced up. “She’s human.”
“She’s adopted.”
Ah. That explained it. The little girl didn’t so much as resemble either of her parents. That had thrown Kagome off. She didn’t ask why they had adopted because that wasn’t a necessity. “I don’t think full custody will go for either. If anything, it will be a joint custody or weekends and one to two days during the week.” Kagome knew she wasn’t going to be leaving anytime soon; besides, she wasn’t leaving until she finished her Concord. She shrugged her jacket off her shoulders and the golden chain around her neck caught on the collar, tugging it up and away from her neck so that it landed on her white collared dress shirt.
Inuyasha opened his mouth to continue but stopped and reared back, his eyes catching on the small Jewel hanging from the chain. Something flickered in his eyes. Shock. Something akin to fear and dislike. “Hell, get that thing away from me.”
Kagome frowned at his abrupt behavior and glanced down, following the direction of his eyes. She lifted the pink Jewel around her neck up, the Jewel dangling from the chain. “It’s just—“
“I know what it is.” He was back in his chair as far as he could—away from her and the Jewel. Hell yes he knew what that little Jewel was. It was the Shikon Jewel, a very—very—powerful entity in the Demon and Human world. It made sense that she would have it, considering she was a Priestess. It just hadn’t entered his mind that with her being a Priestess, she might be the Protector of that. “That thing can Purify me.” And he did NOT want to be purified. He knew the Jewel could be used for one’s own gain and since he didn’t want anything, that would leave the Jewel with the only thing left. It could purify him on touch and turn him human. While he liked humans just fine, he did not want to be one. He liked being a half demon just fine.
“Hell, lady, please just—“
Kagome dropped the Jewel back inside her shirt so that it was nestled against her breast, her dress shirt covering it. “Sorry.”
“It’s ok. Just…be careful. That thing can purify me and I prefer to be my half-demon self than a human.”
Not the best thing to say.
“What’s wrong with being a human?” Kagome snapped out.
Inuyasha held up his hands defensively. Hell, when had he become such a blubbering fool? “Nothing. I’m half-human too, remember? It’s just, well—“
“Do you have something against humans?” Kagome arched an eyebrow but she did nothing to disguise the cool like in her eyes. How ironic was that? She’d been the one raciest against Demons to begin with. The thing was, with Demons it was twice as raciest to have something against a human. Mainly because Demons had strength over humans. They had no reason to look down on humans when as Demons, they had the world at their feet. Most of them, anyways.
“That’s a stupid question, isn’t it? I’d have to be raciest against myself if that were the case.” When Kagome sighed, Inuyasha could sense the tension leaving her body. Why were humans so hard-headed?
