Author’s Note:
It would appear that I’ve forgotten where I wanted to go with this story. One moment my mind was buzzing with it and then I just couldn’t remember. I’m nowhere near giving up, so don’t get your hopes up yet. It just seems that this story is taking on a life of its own, wanting to go another way. Don’t worry, it’s still based around what’s happening but the chapters aren’t going to be what I had originally planned but I’m sure you’ll still love them. :]
Chapter Five
Now that was irony. Kagome wouldn’t deny that she was a little raciest against Demons. She was coming to the conclusion that some Demons weren’t as bad as others, but, they still had a tendency to be assholes. The irony of that was that Inuyasha, whether he knew it or not, was raciest against humans. It softened the blow that, at least, he tried not to be. That human side of his had a conscious.
“Rin is 8 years old, so, maybe we could bring it down to her.” Kagome highly doubted the Court would let an 8 year old girl choose which parent she wanted to live with. A child that young didn’t understand the full extent of what was going on. Rin may have been born into the Demon world but that didn’t change the facts.
“No, the Court would never put a child that young through that.”
“It was a suggestion.” And one that she fully agreed with him on. On that, they agreed. Kagome couldn’t imagine putting a child, human or Demon alike through that. Sesshomaru and Kagura would both work the child to death through persuasion and she wouldn’t put it past them to tempt their Daughter into going whichever way. “Sesshomaru should know better. I’m not saying he won’t have a chance where Rin is concerned, but going full out for Rin isn’t the best of moves. Most of the time, the Court favors the Mother.” Kagome took a sip of her Concord and lifted her eyes from the open folder in her hands to his sincere face. “The Demon Court isn’t that different in matters like that, are they?”
Inuyasha shrugged. “It can go either way. We know some Demon mothers can be cruel to their young. We can’t just automatically assume the Mother is the better choice. We can’t afford a mistake like that, especially where a child is concerned.”
Was that a hint of mockery? Kagome was tempted to tell him that the human Court did take matters like this seriously. They only gave a child to whom they thought was more suitable. In some cases, they had been wrong, but that was a rare happening. If he was suggesting that Demons had more morals than Humans…No, she forced her mind to stop there. If she was going to win this case she had to open her preferences. Not all Demons were assholes. Kagura was, if she could call her that, nice. Sesshomaru, she couldn’t say; she had yet to meet him. Inuyasha, she wasn’t sure. She hadn’t even known for a full two days’ time and he was constantly changing her mind of thinking.
“Kagura listed Alimony so please, if you will, inform Sesshomaru of that. That’s not much that she’s asking for.”
“That’s not much?” Inuyasha leaned back in his chair, arching an eyebrow. “She wants the House, his mokomoko, Rin, not to mention the cars. Add Rin to that and not to mention the Alimony?” He held up a hand when she opened her mouth. “Hear me out—“ Just because she was a Priestess capable of purifying him didn’t mean he was going to give her the lead in the Case. Sesshomaru was still his client, first and foremost. “—no, she doesn’t have the right to all of that. She can’t have Alimony and the House. Alimony with his money would cover probably a couple houses like that. Maybe.”
Kagome nodded though she wasn’t so sure about that. She’d have to look up more on Demon Laws. She did know, that at least in the human world, if the woman or man tried hard enough, pressed their case, they could leave with everything. So far she hadn’t been able to dig anything up on Sesshomaru but his—so far—innocent record didn’t full her. He’d lived for hundreds and hundreds of years. There had to be something in his past. Not even Demons were perfect—nowhere near. “I’ll go over that with her again. Update me on the Demon Court. I’d prefer not to go in there blind.”
She swiveled in her seat, lifting her hand so the drink was clear of her body when she did so. The bar was a little more crowded than earlier. A glance at the clock proved to be 8pm. There was still a couple more hours before the real crowd came in. She spun her seat halfway towards him but someone walked by, knocking into the back of her hand. Inuyasha’s hand shot out, curling his fingers around the glass and her hand to still the contents from spilling out. That, all in a matter of seconds. She grinned. “Ah, fast reflexes.”
Inuyasha shrugged but he couldn’t stop the grin that stole over his lips. “Half demon.” As if that explained it all. Not fast enough though, as another patron shuffled past them, bumping into the back of their seats. It was only seconds after he’d ‘saved’ her drink so he didn’t expect it. The bump against his hand tilted it, almost jerking the cup forward and the wine tilted over the upper edge of the cup. Kagome rose to her feet, shoving the glass onto the bar top as she wiped her hands frantically over the forming stain in her white shirt.
“Ah, hell, I’m sorry—“ Inuyasha started, handing her half a stack of napkins.
“It’s not your fault.” Kagome muttered and began dabbing at the spot with a napkin. Shit, she could feel the liquid soaking through over the cloth covering her breasts, the middle labels on her jacket damp. “Dammit.” She whispered and started shrugging out of her suit jacket.
Inuyasha rose to his feet beside her, his hands reaching up to catch her jacket. “Obviously my reflexes aren’t that good.” He rolled his eyes, actually rolled them, as she batted his hands away.
“It’s alright. I got it.” Kagome shrugged his hands away and pushed the jacket off her shoulders and off her arms. She pulled the damp material of her shirt away from her breast. Dammit, this was her favorite shirt—She batted his hands away again when he tried dabbing at the stain. “Stop, I can—“
“It’s my fault—“
“No, Inuaysha—“
“Just let me help you—shit. Dammit!” Inuyasha jerked his hand back from the loose hold she’d put on his wrist, circling it with her hand. “Would you stop doing that?” He shook his hand from the slight burning sensation around his wrist where she’d used her Powers to almost seer his flesh. She hadn’t left a mark other than a little redness but that didn’t take away the sting.
“I told you, it’s alright.” Kagome meant what she’d said. She didn’t need his help to fix this little problem. It wasn’t his fault. Some people just didn’t watch where they were going or they were too drunk to notice. She didn’t feel an ounce of remorse, not the first time and definitely not now. She wiped at her blouse with the remaining paper towels and then stood. “Come on, we can go to one of the back tables. The bar isn’t going to be this empty all night.”
Inuyasha nodded. There was no way he was going to be able to explain the differences between the Demon Court and a Human’s Court in one night. He could give her the basics, though. There were a few essential things that she needed to know. His wrist was still tingling from the small amount of Power she had channeled there. It left his entire arm hot. He swore if she had touched him a second longer his entire body would have felt the heat.
He swore as he followed her, watching her lead the way towards one of the back tables. How she could have so much power in that little body of hers, he didn’t know. But something about her, the way the heat radiated in his arm…That shit had hurt, but the heat lingered.
Inuaysha broke out in a sweat, his mind forming over the impossibility…the possible truth. If he wasn’t mistaken, Inuyasha Talenashi had just found his Mate.
“Shit.” He whispered.
