Chapter Six
Shit was right. He was screwed and Inuyasha knew it. Thoroughly, totally and completely screwed. And by the very woman who he’d known had been out there somewhere. He just hadn’t expected to find her—now. Least of all expected her to be a human. A Priestess.
The Fates had a twisted sense of humor. They weren’t laughing behind his back. They had to be laughing their asses off to his face. And to top it off, things had taken a turn for the worse where he was concerned.
Mainly because Kagome was his Mate. He knew it without a doubt; she didn’t, of course. And he had the feeling she wouldn’t take that small notion lightly. She’d deny it. Something about her led him straight to that conclusion. No, he wasn’t naïve enough to tell her the staggering truth—not yet—but he’d be damned if he would walk away from her. He couldn’t. Not now.
Inuyasha cursed silently. Where a moment ago he had been calm, coolly composed, his insides were a mess now. Shit. He had to get himself together. He couldn’t tell her, not even when everything he was, everything inside of him, demanded he take what was his. Kagome was going to be hell on wheels. And if she knew…Hell, if anyone knew, he’d be screwed on both sides. If he lost the case, Sesshomaru would claim he’d done it for Kagome’s benefit; after all, he’d want to make his Mate happy.
And if Kagome lost, she’d say he’d taken advantage of her weaknesses and exploited them.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck—“
“Are you alright?”
Inuyasha lifted his head at her words. No, he wasn’t alright. Not in the way that she thought. He took a deep breath, get yourself together, and nodded. He could do this. Fuck, but he could do this. Things were going to be a bit more complicated than he’d originally intended but he was going to finish this. “I’m fine. Sorry about that. Now—“ He forced his thoughts back to the present, everything except the fact that she was his Mate.
Shit.
“Like I said, The Demon Court isn’t exactly like the Human Court. One thing you need to know is that some of the Demon’s there will know you’re a Priestess.”
“And they’re not going to like that.” Kagome finished for him. Of course. That made sense. Not all Demons in this world were as understanding as the man in front of her. Some were plain out assholes or worse.
“And the Judge. Don’t let her look fool you. She’s no mere girl—“ Inuyasha started but she cut him off.
“The Judge is a little girl?”
Inuyasha almost smiled at the confusion, maybe a little shock on her face. She really had no idea what she was getting herself into. But he didn’t doubt she could handle it. “No, she’s a Demon. That should speak for itself. Her name is Kanna. She has no scent and no demonic aura so you won’t be able to sense her. But she will know What you are when you look into her mirror.”
Kagome wasn’t exactly sure what he meant by that but she understood what he left unsaid—again. “Then the rest will know.”
“You’re a smart woman.” He wished he’d brought some information regarding the Court but he hadn’t been planning on things going like…this. “She’s a Nihility Demon. When on the stand, when her Mirror is on the person, you can’t lie. Her Mirror will show the truth. Not only that, but her Mirror will show something significant of each Candidate that has an importance in the Case. When you go before Kanna, that’s what she will first do. With Sesshomaru and Kagura as well.”
“And you.”
“Yes. Things can get a bit…violent. We are Demons after all, so don’t let that come as a surprise. Kanna will let things fall through to extent. Just not enough to kill if she sees no need to stop it.” The Demon Court, like he’d said, was different than the Human Court. He was trying to warn her.
“And the Jury?”
“Will be made up of lesser Demons.”
It didn’t sound too difficult. Kagome smiled, her lips tilting just the tiniest bit. “I take it I shouldn’t go…shocking people, like I did you?”
Inuyasha chuckled. “No. Some of them wouldn’t take too kindly to that.” Some of them wouldn’t take too kindly to having a human, a Priestess, in their mists period.

Hell if it hadn’t been hard to watch her walk away from him. Inuyasha knew it was only natural that he would want to spend more time with her but he couldn’t just ask her out for another drink. He knew it was only natural that he’d wonder if her hair was as soft, as thick and luxurious as it looked. If her skin was as soft, if those damned lips—
“Ah, fuck.” Inuyasha groaned and ran a hand down his face. He didn’t have to say it out loud. The thought was there. He had it bad. And it was all fucking natural to want his fucking Mate. Not just sexually, but mentally as well. Just the feel of her in his arms would have settled.
After they’d left the Bar and parted ways he’d faxed her papers and pictures regarding the Judge, the guard and a few of the Jury. How he was going to get through this, he wasn’t sure. Things were going to be and were going to get difficult. He knew neither Kagura nor Sesshomaru were going to give in so easily. He went through his notes; maybe Sesshonaru would agree.
If Kagura settled for the House then Sesshomaru could keep his money and the summer houses. They could split the cars. At least Kagome agreed with the joint custody. It wasn’t right to put that little girl through so much at such a young age. From what he knew of Rin, she loved both her parents and she wouldn’t want to be separated from either.
He picked up his jacket and slid out from the booth. Her scent wafted up from across the table. She even smelled good. “Dammit.” He whispered. She’d been right about the place crowding up because it took him a few minutes to reach the door. He really, really didn’t like being caged in like this. He pushed open the door and stepped outside and then stopped just as suddenly.
“What the fu—hell? Are you alright?” Inuyasha stared at Kagome and then Centipede Demon lying at her feet.
“She attacked me.” Her expression was almost numb. Shock, maybe.
Inuyasha cursed silently and wrapped his hand around her arm, pulling her back. “Are you alright?”
Kagome cleared her throat and gently pulled her arm from his grasp. “Yes, she tried to attack me…” Tried was the keyword. Inuyasha didn’t see any marks on her. But he did see a seared handprint on the front of the human Centipedes body. Had she purified the Demon?
“What did you do?” Maybe a wrong choice of words but Demons didn’t normally attack humans.
“I didn’t do anything.” Kagome cleared her throat again and reached inside the vee of her shirt and pulled out the chain that the Jewel rested on. “She was after this.” Her voice lowered, sounding almost lame—and confused—as she spoke.
He automatically took a step back. “Yea, I can see why…”
Kagome shook her head, ignoring that comment. “No, she shouldn’t—“
“Give it to me!” The low, hissed out words spewed up between them. Before Kagome could even move, Inuyasha took a step forward. The Demon was up halfway before Inuyasha leaned down, that was all, and slammed the Demon back down onto the ground with his hand around her neck. He gave another shove with his hand and his hand cut clean through the Centipedes neck and hitting the cemented ground. Dust flared up as the Demon disintegrated, its death final.
Inuyasha glanced up. “Hey—“
“I need to go.” Kagome’s voice was curt, the look in her eyes unreadable. “I’ll call you after I’ve talked to Kagura about what needs to go down.”
“Wait—“ Inuyasha cursed, standing up from his bent position but Kagome was already hurrying down the walkway.
What. The. Fuck?
