Chapter Seven
That wasn’t supposed to happen. And that wasn’t a good thing. It didn’t make sense. Kagome rubbed her temples as those thoughts flew through her mind. That wasn’t—shouldn’t—have happened. She circled the Jewel hanging from the chain with her hand and squeezed. That shouldn’t…have happened. She still wasn’t sure that anything had really happened. It had been a onetime thing, for sure. No Demon should have been able to sense the Jewel. At least, not with it in her possession. But the fact was that the Centipede Demon had sensed the Jewel the moment Kagome had stepped outside. The Jewel that she barely kept Purified as it was. The Jewel had always been dormant, its Powers held in check and it still was, but it was…active.
She could feel the warmth against the center of her palm where she held it. That wasn’t necessarily a good thing. In a world filled with demons, it was not a good thing. But she wasn’t naïve enough to take it off and leave it unprotected. She wasn’t sure…
She winced when she saw the blinking light on the answering machine across from her. Kagura had left her three messages, three of which she had yet to return her call. She wasn’t being a very good Attorney by ignoring her client and she made a silent promise to return Kagura’s call in an hour. While Kagura had paid her a hefty sum, Kagome had a more important problem to settle.
She pushed back from her desk and closed the file filled folder in front of her. “Ugh…I have some things I need to take care of, Miroku. If anyone calls, I’m out of the Office. Make sure you take any messages.”
She picked up her Jacket—God, she loved this cold weather—and within three minutes she was out the door. She knew of only one sure way to test her theory. Sesshomaru, Kagura and Inuyasha would have to come last until she had this figured out, or at the least, in the middle. They might not understand the importance of this, but she did.
How smart was this? How stupid was this—Her cell phone vibrated in her pocket and she glanced at it. Kagura. Seconds later her phone beeped; she had a voicemail. Of course.
She hailed a cab and gave him directions. There was only one sure way, only one sure place that she’d get the information she needed. The Cab rolled to a stop fifteen minutes later. She paid his tab and looking at the Forest, she knew she was in the right place.
The Demon Forest.
What other place than a Forest of Demons to go when you needed interactions with a few Demons? Inuyasha didn’t count. He already knew she had the Jewel. And she didn’t want Sesshomaru or Kagura knowing.
Some Demons wanted to blend in, look like their human counter parts. Some didn’t care. They kept their Demon forms. And the moment her feet touched the grass the hair on the back of her neck stood on end. She spun around, her senses flaring. She swung her right arm wide, using her briefcase as a weapon. It connected, slamming hard up against the small green toad Demon who charged her from behind. The toad Demon was small in size, easily sent flying.
“The Shikon Jewel…” The ghastly voice came up against her from behind, a low whisper that sent chills down her spine. She spun around and curled her hand around the Jewel. She recognized him on sight, a Demon named Juuroumaru.
She’d been right. The Jewel was very much active. She released the flow of spiritual energy inside of her and it flared out from her body, bright pink light encasing the Demon that threw himself at her. She caught the scent of smoke before his body burst into flames—into nothing.
“ARE YOU INSANE?!”
Kagome spun around at the shocked, familiar voice that through itself at her—enraged.
“What the hell are you doing? YOU COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!”
Kagome released the Jewel, the suffused pink glow leaving her body. Inuyasha stalked towards her, the pink aura leaving his body. His hair was pitch black, those adorable dog ears of his gone as he stalked towards her, but as the pink light started to fade, silver started to leak into his hair. By the time he reached her, he was Demon again, his eyes those molten amber again.
She frowned, ignoring his outburst. “I told you, I can handle myself.”
“That was some stupid shit you pulled. Jesus, woman, you purified me.” He snapped out. It was clear the Purification hadn’t lasted long; he was definitely Demon again. He’d known she was powerful but he hadn’t imagined…
“What the hell were you doing? Real smart coming into a Demon Forest. Even more smart coming into a Demon Forest when you’re a Priestess. What the hell—“
Kagome lashed out, curling her hand around his wrist and channeling hot, purifying energy up his arm. That shut him up but he yanked his arm back, cradling his hand as he cursed.
“Holy hell, woman, will you quit doing that!” Inuyasha shook his hand. How many times had she done that already?
“I told you, I can handle myself—“
“Yea, I see that.” Inuyasha interrupted her dryly. His ears swiveled as he heard Jaken groan and stagger towards them. She’d handled herself just fine against him and that with just a brief case. But he hadn’t been worried about that. He’d been pissed when Jaken had thrown himself at Kagome. Like, WHAT THE FUCK? But he’d been terrified when he’d seen that larger Demon come at her.
“You—“ He caught Jaken by the back of his collar when the Demon reached them and lifted him up in the air, dangling the toad demon between them. “—what the hell did you think you were doing?”
“She has the Jewel, Inuyasha.”
“Yea, and?” Inuyasha shook Jaken. Really, he hated Toad Demons.
Kagome lifted her chin. “You try that again and I’ll purify you into a toad.” She warned the so-named Jaken. “I told you before, I can handle myself.”
Inuyasha snorted. So what if she could protect herself? That was his job—He nearly groaned. Yea, but she didn’t know that was his job. One he’d do gladly…”But what the hell—“
“You should leave that Thing some place safe.” Inuyasha dropped Jaken to the ground. If the Toad Demon knew what was good for him, he’d keep his distance.
“It is safe.”
Inuyasha scoffed at that. While she was good in her line of work, she obviously wasn’t good in the line of thinking. She’d been attacked last night because of the Jewel. Then twice today because of the Jewel. He had to wonder how many times she’d been attacked because of the Jewel before today. He broke out in a sweat just thinking about it. Holy hell, his Mate had to…
Who knew his Mate would be an insane Priestess?
“The Jewel’s active.” Kagome finally snapped out. As if it was any business of his.
“Ugh…?”
Kagome had the feeling he almost said “and”. He went down a notch where she considered him to be “nice”. She was starting to remember why most Demons irritated her. She was sure he knew what the Jewel was. But obviously didn’t know what the Jewel being active meant. The Jewel had always been placed in the hands of a Power Priestess. The world was a place of good and evil and both would more than likely want to use it.
That was why its feel had been hidden. Kagome was torn between telling him and not. He knew she had the Jewel but obviously he didn’t care for it.
“You’re crazy, you know that?” Inuyasha muttered.
Her eyes narrowed. She wasn’t crazy. She knew exactly what she was doing and why. She lifted her hand. But he saw her coming or he knew what she was going to do and he caught her wrist before she could even touch him.
“I don’t think so—“ Like hell she was going to do that mini purifying thing she did every time she touched him. That shit hurt—
“Dammit!” Inuyasha cursed, snatching his hand back as her skin seared his palm almost gently. She smiled at him. Too smug. “Will. You. Stop. Doing. That.” He punctuated each word through clenched teeth, nursing his stinging palm while the pain slowly faded.
Kagome opened her mouth. Maybe if he understood then he’d quit being so unreasonable. She’d had a perfectly good reason for what she’d done.
Her phone vibrated to life in her pocket again. The phone saved her from that mistake because she answered it without looking. Kagura’s voice sounded in her ear, quick and curt. A little pissed, too. Her eyes narrowed as she stared at Inuyasha but she didn’t say anything to him. A few seconds later she snapped her phone shut and turned her full attention on him. “Would you care to explain why Sesshomaru has come to conclusion that he’s getting everything minus a couple million?” The blanched look that crossed his face said everything.
Busted.
