Chapter Twelve
She’d never get that image of Miroku out of her head. She didn’t mind seeing his behind from work every day, that was a given. But seeing his white ass—that was disgusting. She couldn’t bring herself to call him out on it, that would just embarrass them both in the knowledge that he’d gotten caught and that she’d looked. Kagome didn’t know how he did it, Sango looked like a smart woman, but he’d pulled her over to his dark side. Miroku moved fast.Chapter Twelve
Obviously.
The first thing she’d heard this morning when she walked in the Office was his “I am so in love”. She’d rolled her eyes at that. She had bigger things to worry about. The Jewel, the Court, trying to force Kagura and Sesshomaru into a decent sense of calm where each other was concerned.
Inuyasha.
He wasn’t the same man she’d met. He was…different. Ever since he’d “You’re my Mate” his attitude had changed. His attitude wasn’t forceful; it didn’t even hurt her, really. He was just…More aggressive. Arrogant. Damn sure in the fact that she was his Mate. And it hadn’t helped matters that she’d kissed him back. The entire world hadn’t fallen away at that kiss. It fell apart. That had been the hottest kiss that she’d ever participated in and it had left her burning for more. It just didn’t add up.
Nothing did.
She finally had that chance to file those folders in the cabinet before she started down the stairs before she paused. She braced a hand against Miroku’s door. “Hey, Miroku?”
“Hmmm, yea?” He rolled back in his chair slightly.
“Is it possible for…a Human and a Demon to Mate?”
He looked taken aback and duh, Kagome knew he hadn’t been expected that. “Not that I know of. Don’t think that one’s in the History books. Why?”
Just like she’d thought. Miroku was from a long line of Monks and he hadn’t even heard of such a thing. She shook her head. “I was just wondering…” She turned down the hallway. She’d asked Miroku but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to look. She was a Priestess; in her possession were scrolls, History books and legends.
And she still had a meeting with Kagura. Dammit.
--~*~*~*~*~*~--
“Kagura… 221; Kagome warned softly. As her Attorney, Kagome had to tell the truth. Besides, Kagura would have known she was lying. So she told her the truth. She hadn’t approved of how the first Court Meeting had gone down. “You can’t just start a fight like that.”“Oh, believe me, I can. Did anyone tell you how the Demon Court is?”
“Yes, Inuyasha did.” She’d come into that Courtroom in full knowledge. Or so she’d thought. She hadn’t known that they’d be allowed to tear the Courtroom in half until it had happened. “That isn’t going to make things work in your favor. You may be a Demon but remember, a Divorce is a Divorce. To get what you want sometimes you have to give a little.” And sit there and be quiet.
The Wind Demon chuckled, staring at her, her expression calm as she sipped a cup of coffee. “We work a little differently and I’m counting on you to get me everything.”
Kagome sighed. Kagura wasn’t with her fully on this. It was she, Kagome, not Kagura, who had gone to Law school. Kagome knew the in and outs and like she’d said, a divorce was a divorce. In some cases everything was split. This was one of those cases because there was nothing to say, nothing to prove that Kagura deserved to get everything. “Kagura, I don’t think that’s a good idea. Now, I’ve come down with a few things for you. You can get the main house, but if you get that then Alimony is out of the picture.”
She hoped to God Kagura was listening, really listening. Because Kagome really didn’t want to repeat herself. It was her job to convince Kagura to see otherwise. It was going to be one hell of a job…
Kagura leaned forward, the look in her eyes clearly stating that that conversation was over. If only Kagura knew that she didn’t give up. The Wind Demon continued on though. An entirely different conversation. “I’d keep the Shikon No Tama to myself, if I were you. There are a lot of Demons who would like to get their hands on the Jewel. And not the kind that you would like to meet.”
Kagome had met one of those Demons in the Courtroom. She hadn’t seen him but she remembered how he’d felt as he’d dragged her across the floor. How it had felt when he’d closed his hand around the Jewel in an attempt to break it off the chain. She remembered the darkness that had threatened to leave her unconscious, unable to breath. “It’s with me at all times.”
“Even I can sense the Jewel, Kagome. Do not bring it out in public.”
How was she going to tell Kagura that the Jewel hadn’t always been able to be sensed…? “I can’t leave it unprotected.”
“Then safeguard it.” Kagura stared at her, the look almost insistent before a keening look entered those strangely colored eyes. “Sesshomaru wants to call the Divorce off.”
“He what?” She seemed to be saying that a lot lately. At least, the ‘what’ part.
Kagura chuckled. “Old fool.”
“What brought this change?”
“You did, actually.”
Kagome arched an eyebrow at that. She was not a life changing person. No, she corrected herself, she was. She changed people’s lives when they were newly divorced. “I did?”
“You see, when other Demons are highly sexual, others can feel it—“
Kagome set her coffee cup on the table, cutting the Wind Demon off with the sound. “I do not need the details of your sex life.”
“Not my sex life, Higurashi—yours.”
Thoughts of the night before whirled through her head. From that first kiss to Inuyasha’s hands circling her thighs, lifting her up against the wall, to a black haired Wind Demon peeking at them. Had she seen them? Even in the cold, brisk wind she could feel the heat rushing to her cheeks. “I don’t have a sex life.”
“Not yet. But your Mated lover—“
Kagome coughed in the back of her throat, a small sound really. That word...She felt a little relieved that Kagura hadn’t caught them doing a little heavy petting. But still, THAT word…
Kagura continued. “You see, when a Mated couple, or soon to be Mated couple, go through a highly sexual phase, other Demons can feel it.” Her eyes darkened. “It isn’t pleasant, to say the least. It can be a little…frustrating. Other Demons can feel the sexual...tension, which in turn, will cause them to go a little…haywire.” The look on the Wind Demons face said enough. That was entirely too much information for Kagome. It explained SOME of why Sesshomaru wanted to call the Divorce off…He and his Mate of thousands of years had obviously had some wild sex…She really didn’t need to know that
Oh. My. God.
“Inuyasha is not my Mate.”
“That may be, but he’s close to his Mate and his sexual aggressiveness is directed at you, my dear Kagome.”
“I’m human.”
Kagura chuckled. “Sex between ‘species’ is not over-rated, my dear. It can be quiet…interesting.”
Should she say something? About what Inuyasha had said? She took a sip of her coffee, almost burning her tongue. She didn’t care; it gave her a moment to think. “Do Humans and Demons Mate?”
“I’ve never heard of it, no.”
Another “no”. Why was Inuyasha the only one to see that? “I’m not…” Dammit, how could she word this? “How do you know if someone is your Mate?”
“A marriage between humans and a Mating between Demons are two completely different things. You humans can’t feel like we do. A Mate is like…” The look on Kagura’s face was thoughtful, as if she were thinking deeply, trying to word the same thing Kagome had tried. “A Mate will go to any lengths for his Mate. He will not, ugh…from experience, I would say, listen to reason. Sesshomaru was…”
Listen to reason? Kagome felt faint. “So Demons and Humans do not Mate?” She asked again.
“It’s never been recorded, no. I’ve never really thought on the matter. Anything is possible…” But Kagura didn’t sound too enthusiastic on the idea.
--~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~--
For someone who didn’t believe a certain Demon, Kagome was up to her elbows in scrolls and texts book. She hadn’t wanted Miroku nosing around so she’d brought the scrolls to her Condo. Privacy. Without the Divorce on her hands, she had plenty of time to go through all this. The Divorce wasn’t over, because they all still had to go before Kanna to finalize it, she just didn’t have to worry about going over the paperwork to work out the kinks in who got what. But this, this was impossible. She’d never studied so hard in her life. She studied because she wanted to know. It was a hard, driving ache in her mind and body. Ever since that kiss and the feel of his hips rocking into hers, she couldn’t not think about him. But as she turned the pages, released scroll after scroll, there was nothing.
Nothing.
She hadn’t read a single thing about a Demon and Human Mating. Nothing ever recorded in history about it. Not in the Feudal Era when Demons had become known and not in the present. The only thing Kagura was sure of that was that Kagome had the hot’s for Inuyasha and vice versa. Kagome groaned and closed her eyes, almost smacking herself in the head just because she needed it. Inuyasha’s Mate was near…and his sexual aggression was directed towards her…
“God, I want to jump a half Demons bones.” Kagome did smack herself in the head then because she was seriously not right in the head.
“Sex between ‘species’ is not over-rated, my dear. It can be quiet…interesting.”
She seriously did not want to be thinking about Inuyasha and sex in the same sentence. Yea, she just bet it could be interesting. Inuyasha wasn’t the submissive type. Which meant she’d be under him in a heartbeat—
That kissed had seriously fucked up her mind. But what if she was his Mate? What if…
Kagome just didn’t know ‘what if’.
Meanwhile…
Inuyasha’s nose wrinkled as Sesshomaru shook his hand. Things had taken a different turn where Sesshomaru and Kagura were concerned. “Are you sure?” At Sesshomaru’s nod, Inuyasha knew it was up between his intriguing Mate and Sesshomaru to bring Kagura around. Sesshomaru wanted to be with his Mate.
Well, that made two of them.
Second, someone Sesshomaru had come to the realization that he didn’t want to leave the Wind Demon.
Third—hell, everyone was engaging in sex lately. Everyone was having a fucking—pun intended—good time when he couldn’t even get past second base with his Mate.
