Chapter 2 - Field Trip

Shitenshi lagged to the rear of the group of students from her school. Everyone moved away from the displays far too quickly for her taste, especially when she wanted to jot down some notes or a quick sketch of one item. More often than not, she used her sensitive ears to locate her group again. Her extreme hearing was part of her hanyou legacy, a result of her bat-youkai blood. Her ears could catch the softest sounds and their echoes.

“I believe your group has left already.” A gruff voice interrupted Shitenshi's sketching of an ancient sword. She gasped and looked up at a security guard.

“Gomen, I'll leave.” She jammed her pencil behind her ear and walked off in the general direction of her classmates, softly humming a measure of music. The resulting echoes lead her down a hall and into a small side display room. Expecting the others to be walking through, the hanyou almost bumped into the last student in line.

“Watch it, Shi.” The boy muttered.

“Gomen, Jori, What's the hold up?”

“Inutaisho Sesshoumaru.”

“What?”

“Yeah, Mrs. Kaminari cornered him in here, something about `inspiring future generations.'” Jori chuckled at their teacher's zeal.

Shitenshi, short for her age, couldn't see through the much taller students. Looking around to make sure no one could see her; she pumped her hidden wings once. The little boost of momentum lifted her a foot off the ground and she caught a brief glimpse of him. Inutaisho Sesshoumaru. The tai-youkai. He was icily handsome, despite his frown.

Landing, Shitenshi whipped her pencil out from behind her ear and began sketching furiously, determined to capture the inu-youkai's visage before she forgot any detail. Her sensitive ears heard the rest of the group moving and she began to walk along with them, still drawing rapidly. She heard the group moving further and further away as she slowed slightly, concentrating on minute details, like those golden eyes.

Suddenly Shi felt her world shifting as she collided with someone. Strong hands caught her just before she hit the ground. She lost her grip on her tablet and heard it skidding away as she felt her colored pencils spilling from her jeans back pocket. A blush filling her skin, Shi looked up at her savior and found herself staring into the same amber eyes she had just been sketching.

What little breath she had left her in a whoosh. “Gomen… Se-sshou-maru-sama?” She stuttered.

“Keh. No!”

“Gomen, I just thought, your eyes…” Shi freed herself from his grip and scrambled to pick up her pencils, blushing at her mistake. Reaching for the last one, a hand was thrust into Shi's vision, scooping it up before she could.

Shitenshi jammed her pencils back in her pocket and considered the boy before her. He was a hand taller than her, but they looked about the same age. He was wearing faded blue jeans and a black Nirvana t-shirt. A red bandana covered his head. His golden eyes were very similar to Lord Sesshoumaru's, but there was a warmth in this boy's gaze that the adult demon had not possessed.

“Don't mention it.” He snorted. “Uncle Sesso hates to be reminded of how much we look like him.” The boy stooped down and reached for her tablet.

“Uncle Sesso?” This boy was Lord Sesshoumaru's nephew? He didn't respond, but handed her sketch pad back to her. Cheeks flaming, she ducked her head down, adjusting the pad in her grip. “Arigato.” She replied.

“What?”

She raised her eyes. Was he deaf? She looked at his ears and was amazed to see that he had none! Her eyes widened in shock. “Where are your ears?” Shitenshi blurted out before she could stop herself.

His jaw dropped. “You, you can see through it?” His eyes darted to her silver hair. “Then you must be…”

The same thought struck her as she registered the loose silver ponytail and bangs that poked out of his bandana. “You're one, a… a…”

“Hanyou.” They both finished on one low breath.
