Chapter 3 - From The Inside
~*~*~
Lyrics from the Linkin Park song From the Inside

{Instrumental}
Don't know who to trust
No surprise
Everyone feels so far away from me
Heavy thoughts sift through dust
And the lies

Mujinku was bored out of his mind. He had walked through this museum countless times with his sisters and cousins. Especially when his mom and Aunt Kagura were out shopping and left his older brother Shippo babysitting. The fox-demon would sit on some ancient relic and read manga and fantasy books while the younger children wandered through the museum.

Mujinku and his cousin, Koorinumaru, would taunt their sisters and practice with the old weapons. Tokijin and Tenseiga were off limits, as were some of the other youkai swords, but the human ones were fine as long as the boys didn't break them. The girls would always go find some royal kimono's and jewelry and dress up as wealthy hime, demanding that the boys be their suitors. At five to two odds, the boys didn't stand a chance.

Yet for some reason, every year, Mujinku's school insisted on taking a field trip to the museum. Koori had, of course, protested, saying that he knew the museum by heart, since his old man ran it. He had ended up leading the tour every year since then. Not wanting to suffer the same fate, Mujinku had kept his mouth shut and ditched his group as soon as possible. He wandered through the museum, ipod in his pocket, headphones slipped under his bandana and into his real ears.

Trying not to break
But i'm so tired of this deceit
Every time I try to make myself
Get back up on my feet
All I ever think about is this
All the tiring time between
And how
Trying to put my trust in you
Just takes so much out of me

He was meandering through a tapestry room, lost in his music, when he ran smack into a young girl. Inu instincts kicking in, he caught her before she hit the ground. Pencils cascaded out of her pockets and rolled across the floor as she looked up at him. Purple eyes? She had purple eyes! Of course, with contacts now, that didn't mean anything.

“Gomen… Se-sshou-maru-sama?” She stumbled over the word, but he was adept enough at lip reading to figure out her meaning.

Me? Uncle Sesso? Hell no!!! “Keh. No!” He released her hands and stepped back as she straitened.

“Gomen, I just thought, your eyes…” She ducked down and scurried after her pencils.

Oh, yeah, the eyes. She's probably never seen them before. “Don't mention it.” Mujinku snorted. “Uncle Sesso hates to be reminded of how much we look like him.” He saw a pad of paper out of the corner of his eye and reached for it, handing it to the strange girl. She ducked her head as she replied, and he couldn't catch it. “What?”

She gave him an odd look and opened her mouth before freezing, eyes widening in shock. “Where are your ears?”

I take everything from the inside
And throw it all away
'Cause I swear
For the last time
I won't trust myself with you
Tension is building inside
Steadily
Everyone feels so far away from me
Heavy thoughts forcing their way
Out of me

What??? She… can… but Mom's charm… “You, you can see through it?” He finally absorbed what he had been seeing. Not only were her eyes purple, but she had silver hair. “Then you must be…”

The same thing must have occurred to her as her eyes swept over his bangs and pony-tail. “You're one, a… a…”

“Hanyou.” They both finished on one low breath.

Wow! Mujinku had seen other hanyous before, spying on meetings with either his father or uncle, but he had never met one face to face. Movement caught his eye and he looked closer at her back. What he had taken for an odd coat was really wings; two leathery blackish wings, carefully folded against her back. “You're a bat hanyou?”

She darted a frantic look back at her wings, almost a reflexive move, Mujinku thought, before nodding. “And you're an Inu?” He nodded. “But… your ears…”

I take everything from the inside
And throw it all away
'Cause I swear
For the last time
I won't trust myself with you
I won't waste myself on you
Waste myself on you
You

Oh yeah. He reached behind his dragontails and yanked on the headphone cords. They popped free and slid from under his bandana, blaring Linkin Park. He quickly reached into his pocket and shut off the song. “They're under the bandana, makes it so easy to zone out.” He smirked at her shocked expression. Probably some goodie-two-shoes teacher's pet who always paid attention.

“And no one notices?”

Or maybe not. “Nah. White cords, see, they blend in with the hair. “For once it's useful to be a freak.” He winked.

She shook her head, ponytails swishing. “Maybe for you.” She shrugged her shoulders, rustling her wings. “I can't ever do anything with these.”

“Yeah, but you can fly! I'm Mujinku, by the way.”

“Shitenshi.”

“Cool. So, how do you hide them,” He gestured at the wings, “From everyone?”

“Charm.” She pulled a necklace from underneath the collar of her shirt. A small seashell dangled from it. “Uncle Sumiretaki got them in San Francisco.” She tucked it below her neckline again. “What about you?”

“Oh,” He pointed to the gem hanging from his ponytail tie. “Mom's a miko. Made spells for the whole family.” Suddenly, his bandana twitched slightly. “My class is leaving. I'll see you around?”

“Sure.” Shitenshi ripped two sheets off her notebook and wrote her number on one while Mujinku wrote his on the other. They traded sheets and then he took off in search of his group, shoving his headphones back under his bandana.

I take everything from the inside
And throw it all away
'Cause I swear
For the last time
I won't trust myself with you
A girl hanyou! And not a dumb one like the twins! He smiled, folding the paper and tucking it into his jeans. And I thought today would be boring.

All the lines in the flashbacks are from the fansub. I did some modifications with English grammar and all, and the thoughts are all mine, but the lines are true to the anime.

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha *pouts* or any of the other characters. I want to thank Rumiko Takahashi and company for creating such awesome characters for me to write about as I drool with envy at her skillz. ;)
