Chapter 5 - Shitenshi's Past
Shitenshi entered the small coffeshop warily, eyes searching for Mujinku. Maybe he's late, or maybe he can't come today, or maybe he doesn't want to come, or maybe- Her frantic train of thought was halted when she spied a familiar silver ponytail at a corner booth. She walked up and slid into the booth, smiling at the other hanyou.
He quickly reached into his pocket and turned off the ipod, yanking the headphones out with the other hand. “Hey Shitenshi! I'm glad you could make it.”
“Hi, me too. Did I keep you waiting long?”
“Nah, haven't even ordered yet. What would you like?”
“Latte, extra foam please.”
“Kay, be right back.” He placed their order at the counter and then came back, settling across from her. He was wearing a navy blue bandana and a black Metallica shirt, with what appeared to be the same faded jeans. She had also dressed comfortably, in cargo pants that held all her pencils easily and a batman shirt.
“So tell me, what is your family like?”
Shi stared at her hands for a moment before answering. “I live with my grandma Ri. She was a bat hanyou, born about 600 years ago. She eventually married a human in her village, since most of the nearby bat colony was wiped out. She had my uncle about 300 years ago; he's in California right now. She had my mom, I dunno, probably 250 years ago. She married my dad about 100 years ago, but they waited awhile to have me, I was never told why. He was a human too.”
Their drinks arrived and Shi cautiously sipped hers, hoping he wouldn't ask the question that always came next. Luck was not with her.
“So why do you live with only your Grandmother?”
“Dad went to America on a business trip, but he never came back. About two months later I caught the flu at school and mom caught it from me. We ran out of medicine, and she had to go get some from the 24 hour drug store. On the way home some gang tried to rob her.” So far so good, she had managed to calmly state the words that still hurt so much. “She, she was still pretty, even though she was old, and they…” she gulped back the tears before whispering, “I-it was our h-human night.”
Mujinku was floored; unable to do anything but stare at this girl who was refusing to let fall the tears that clouded her purple eyes as she stared at her drink. Sadness and anger were emanating from her, but his nose also caught fear and shame. He was confused, unsure what to say to her, having never experienced anything like her pain. His parents were still alive, and both uncles and aunt, though all but one of his grandparents were dead long before he was born.
Nervously, he climbed out of the booth and walked around the table, sliding in next to Shitenshi. Awkwardly, he put one arm around her shoulder. “I'm so sorry, I didn't know.” At his kind words, the tears broke free and trickled down her cheek. “Wait. Please, don't cry, please.” He felt panic rising, just as it did when one of his sisters cried.
Shitenshi sniffled and grabbed a napkin from the holder, wiping her eyes and drying her face. “I'm sorry, I'm usually more controlled than that. You must think I'm horribly girly.” She muttered, not looking up from her drink.
“No, I think you're incredibly brave to be able to tell that to anyone at all.” Mujinku hastened to reassure her. “Most people would have been crying from the beginning. I know my sisters and the triplets would.”
“Really?” She finally dared to look up at him, seeing compassion in those golden eyes.
“Really.” Seeing her returning confidence, he scooted back to his side of the table.
“Tell me about your family, please?”
“Sure, where do you want me to start?”
“You parents.”
“Kay, but it could take awhile.”
