Chapter 7 - Protection
The two teens shrugged into their jackets as they left the theater. The beautiful warm evening had been replaced by a starry sky and a slight wind. They joked and repeated scenes from the movie as they walked back to Shitenshi's home.
“Wow, where do you live?” Mujinku asked as they left the main city behind.
“On this cliff overlooking the city. It's got a bit of forest where we can fly, and it's not too long of a walk from downtown. Grandma Ri still has a house on the coast from way back when, but we live in Mom's house, so I can go to school and stuff.”
“Oh. Can I see you fly some time?”
“Maybe, if Ri says ok.”
“Cool! I've always wanted to fly.”
“You've never flown before?”
“Nah. Pops gets massively airsick. Something about being that high off the ground really tweaks him out. Koori has though, and he promised to take me up once he gets his pilot's license.”
“Awesome! My dad was a pilot, flying city people to the shore for vacations. That's how he met my mom. She was flying the opposite way and talked him into half fare since he was going that way anyway.” Shitenshi giggled. “Ended up making two round trips with him and completely missed her job interview in the city.”
Mujinku sighed. “Lucky him. Mom and pops just argued all the time until they finally admitted that they loved each other.”
Shitenshi burst out laughing. “I wouldn't want to go to your house then, if they're still like that.”
Remembering some of his parents more explosive fights, Mujinku couldn't help but smile “Nah, they're a lot better now, according to Shippo. Pops used to have this rosary necklace and if mom ever said `osuwari' to him, it floored him. But she finally took it off after they got a dog and had to train it. That was all before I was born, but Shippo said it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen.”
“Mmm, sounds like it.” Shitenshi was looking cautiously at the darkened trees surrounding them. She hated this part of the walk at night, it always reminded her of that one night… “Let's hurry; we're almost there.” Shi picked up the pace a bit and Mujinku easily adjusted his stride to match.
“What's up?”
“Nothing, I just don't like this section of the woods.”
“Why?”
“Nothing.”
Mujinku grabbed her hand a stopped, pulling the girl around to face him. He saw that the same fear and shame from before had returned to her lavender eyes. “Shitenshi, what's wrong?”
“Th-this is where… where it hap-happened.” Her panic was rising again.
What happened here? He glanced around. They were still on the road, though surrounded by trees, near one of the poorer areas of town. I remember reading about some muggings in this… oh. This must be where her mom… And she has to walk past this place every day? He could feel anger stirring within him, and a need to chase the fear from the girl's eyes. “Shitenshi, nothing will hurt you while I am here with you. You're safe. I'll protect you.”
Shitenshi felt a warmth filling her, seeping through her veins. “A-arigato Mujinku.” She tentatively leaned forward and he pulled her into his arms, carefully avoiding her wings. They stood together that way for many minutes, until a car backfired in the distance and brought them back to reality.
Mujinku dropped his arms and searched Shitenshi's face. Her fear was almost gone, replaced with trust. He knew he had made the right choice, vowing to protect her. “C'mon, let's get you home.”
“OK.” They began walking again, holding hands that occasionally brushed the other's leg. The main road diverged and they walked up a driveway to a small two-story house overlooking the glimmering lights of Tokyo. Shitenshi released his hand to dig through her purse for her key. “Come on in, I want you to meet Grandma Ri.” Mujinku allowed himself to be pulled into the house.
