Chapter 21 - Attacked

Mujinku walked towards the house, nervously glancing around the deserted neighborhood and back at the map in his hand. Deliberately he turned his back on the chosen building and scanned the street.

“Hello.” A rough voice spoke up from behind him and Mujinku started slightly and whirled. The large man who had been giving instructions to the others stood in the open doorway. “You looking for a pretty young girl?”

Mujinku nodded. “Are you Zard?”

The man's face split into a grin. “Something like that. Come right in.”

Mujinku looked around again before nodding and following the man. One other man sat at a table with three chairs. Behind him a third kept watch over the covered `captive.' The last man was nowhere in sight. “Shi?” He whispered, staring at the blanketed figure. The beefy leader sat at the table and gestured for Mujinku to take the final seat. Instead he stood beside it and stared intently at the `girl' in the corner. “Let Shi go.”

“Don't worry,” The man sneered, “We'll let your little girlfriend go when we've got what we want from you.”

“And what do you want?” Mujinku asked, looking the man in the eye.

“You.” With that, both men at the table launched themselves at the youth. He stepped backwards and drew his staff, fluidly joining the pieces and twirling the weapon to a `ready' position.

The guard pulled off the blanket and he and the imposter joined the line up. Mujinku allowed shock to flicker across his face. “What? Where is Shi?” he demanded.

“Don't worry, you'll be with her soon.” The leader chuckled. “Now!”

The other three rushed Mujinku, fists swinging. He spun, dodged, and swung, careful only to use the blunt end of his staff. He let a few of their punches land, ignoring the small flashes of pain. One of his opponents dropped from a particularly hard rap to the head and the other two backed off, panting as heavily as Mujinku pretended to.

At a signal from the leader, the two came at him, one on either side, while the large man charged him in the front. He swung at the boy and managed to hit the inu's arm. Mujinku heard a rip and felt a trail of fire across his bicep. The man grinned wickedly and opened his palm to reveal the knife he had concealed, blade hidden between his meaty knuckles. Mujinku ignored the wound and continued fighting, allowing more blows to land.

The leader aimed for his ribs and Mujinku jumped backwards, right into the waiting arms of the fifth man. Mujinku struggled wildly, releasing the staff with one hand the reach for his captor. Though startled, the other man did not release the struggling boy. Mujinku kicked out wildly, dropping one of the approaching men, who clutched his belly. The other man and the leader approached with more caution, avoiding the wildly flailing legs.

“Let me go!” He panted, lessening the efforts of his grasping hands and letting the movements of his legs slow.

“The more you struggle, the more your little girl will suffer when we get back.” The leader growled as he lashed out with his fist. The hand connected with Mujinku's stomach and he slumped, resisting the urge to be sick.

“How dare you threaten Shi!” He spat out, kicking again at the approaching men. The shorter one grabbed his ankle and tugged, pulling the hanyou off the ground completely. The leader proceeded to punch every area of Mujinku he could reach, finally stopping when a fist to the temple sent the boy into the depths of unconsciousness.

“Finally, little brat fights better than you do, Mitch!” The one holding the boy commented, finally dropping his burden.

His answer was a backhand from the leader and a growled, “Shut up. We've got to get him back to the Zard fast, before he wakes up.”
