Chapter 23 - See You on the Dark Side of the Moon
Mujinku lay very still, feigning sleep. He could hear a dull roar in the background, but for some reason his head seemed cloudy and he was unable to make out the details of his surroundings. Shards! I don't remember it hurting this much. What'd they do after I went under? And where am I? Cracking his eyes open the tiniest bit, Mujinku saw the faint outlines of boxes and crates.
He sniffed the air, trying to determine the contents by smell, but he could only catch one stale odor. Wait, is this… A chilling though struck Mujinku and he tried to shift his head without being noticed. Not enough. Dang, I'm going to have to move more and just hope they don't notice. Closing his eyes and trying to act completely asleep, he flopped over onto his other side. Feeling his hair fall across his face, Mujinku cracked open one eye.
Everything was black. Oh no. Unfortunately, his movement was noticed.
“Hey, I think the little brat's comin' to!”
“Well put `im back under!”
Unsteady footsteps approached as Mujinku closed his eyes again. And here it comes… Stars burst behind his eyelids as a large fist knocked him out again.

Shitenshi awoke again when the door to her prison was thrust open, flimsy door flying into the wall with a crash before bouncing back. Three men dragged in an unconscious body and unceremoniously dumped it on the floor before trooping out and slamming the door closed behind them.
They kidnapped someone else? And no youkai, so this must be a human. Another girl? I have to help them. Ignoring the ropes that still bound her, Shi rolled and scooted her way across the room to her still companion. Their back was to her, though they weren't tied up. Long black hair had escaped its tie and spread in all directions. She nudged the other figure, who turned towards her with a groan.
Shitenshi's heart almost stopped at the sight of a very familiar face. If he's in here with me… Her voice was the barest frightened whisper. “Mujinku?” His eyes flashed open and he leapt to his feet, glance darting all around the room. “Mujinku, it's ok, it's me, Shitenshi.”
“Shi?” His face cleared as he looked down at the bound girl. “Oh Shi!” He dropped to his knees, one hand going to his hair. He pulled a tiny blade out of his charmed tie and quickly slashed through the ropes that had bound her. Shakily, Mujinku drew the trembling girl into his arms. “I'm so sorry, Shi. I… I swore to protect you, and… and I failed. I'm so sorry.” He whispered the last line into her hair.
Shitenshi was content to feel his lean, powerful arms wrapped around her as she buried her face in his warm chest. She drew in a shuddering breath, her mouth and nose filling with the wonderful musk that was sunny afternoons and Mujinku. She realized that he was still apologizing into her silver tresses and she slowly tilted her head up, careful not to hit his chin. Looking deeply into his sorrowful dark blue eyes, she tentatively lifted one shaky arm to caress his cheek. “You didn't fail me, Mujinku. You came for me. Even as a human, you came for me. You saved me. Only mom and Ri ever did that.”
Mujinku tilted his head to kiss the hand that was rubbing against his jaw. “I swore to always be there for you, Tenshi, and I will. I will always protect you and save you. Trust me.” He gave her a lopsided grin.
“I… I trust y-you, Mujinku.” If only he knew how hard it was for her to say those words, words she hadn't dared speak in twelve years. Shitenshi took a deep breath. “I do trust you.” She felt her eyes drooping in exhaustion and relief and sighed happily when Mujinku gathered her into his arms, whispering his promise in her ear.
“I'll protect you, Tenshi. Always.”
“I know. Somehow, I knew you'd come.” The steady beating on his heart soothed her, and for the first time since she was captured, Shitenshi felt at peace.
