Chapter 26 - Decrepit? Does he have a death wish?

 

“There were humans here recently, and Mujinku, but no female.” Sesshoumaru looked over the building with distaste.

 

“Well he said it was a trap.” Inuyasha kicked a broken chair leg in disgust. They had had to backtrack, picking up the boy's trail from home, and Inuyasha's human form had slowed their progress considerably. “Feh. `Bout time.”

 

Sesshoumaru turned to see his brother in the doorway, framed by the rising sun. “Indeed. Now we can catch that boy without you slowing us down. At least, not as slowing us down as much.” The older brother allowed, smirking.

 

“Shut up.” The younger inu snarled. “I could keep up with you 500 years ago, and now you're old and slow.”

 

“Old and slow?” Sesshoumaru queried, one eyebrow raised.

 

“Wait a minute…” Inuyasha raced from the hut. Sesshoumaru followed, only to find his sibling crouched on the ground.

 

“What are you doing? You look ridiculous.”

 

“Shitenshi was here. Her scent is almost gone, but she was here. Let's go!” The hanyou leapt to his feet and began to run down the road. Sesshoumaru took a minute to identify the girl's faint scent. “Come on slowpoke!” Inuyasha yelled back. “You thought I looked foolish? You're the old slow one. And decrepit, did I mention that?” Inuyasha taunted as, with a roar, Sesshoumaru took off after him.

 

“You will pay for that, half-breed!” Sesshoumaru snarled without malice as the two raced through the forest in the early morning light.

“So do you have a plan?”

 

“Does `get caught, get you, get out?' count?”

 

“No.”

 

“Then no.” Shi sighed in exasperation and threw her jacket at the boy, who ducked, chuckling. Approaching footsteps sobered them and Shi jumped up to look out the window while Mujinku sat in his corner.

 

“Food.” The stoic guard announced as he opened the door. He set a glass of water and a bowl of rice on the floor with two pairs of chopsticks. Shi turned away from the window and gazed at the food in annoyance.

 

“Is that it?”

 

“Zard says to share.”

 

Shitenshi's cheeks turned red. “WHAT? That overgrown lizard wants me to share my meal with that brat?” She flounced over to the food and grabbed the bowl, walking back to the window without so much as a glance at the hanyou.

 

Knowing his part, Mujinku spoke up. “But Shi-”

 

“NO! You can tell that thug that I will not share and if the brat wants anything to eat he can find it himself!” Shi kept her face to the window to hide her laughter, missing the plaintive look that Mujinku sent their jailer.

 

“Sorry kid.” The man said, pulling the door shut.

 

“Shi?” Mujinku asked quietly.

 

“What? I meant it.” She refused to turn and reveal her smile, even when she heard the boy rise and walk towards her.

 

“I don't get any rice?” He whispered in her ear.

 

“N-no. Not until you t-tell me your plan.” Shitenshi barely contained her giggles.

 

Long arms wrapped around her waist as Mujinku rested his chin on her shoulder. “I told you, I wanted to get caught and brought to you. Now I've found you, and so we'll break out and make our big escape.” His hot breath tickled her ear and Shitenshi turned her face to kiss him. Mujinku was happy to comply and maneuvered her to face him as their lips locked together. Without warning, he snatched the rice from her hand and broke the kiss, stepping back.

 

“Mujinku!” Shi scolded.

 

“What? I told you my plan.” He took a bite, maintaining an innocent expression.

 

“Well you knew I'd give it to you anyways,” She huffed. “You could have just asked instead of stealing it from me. Mujinku held out a bite of rice, contriteness written all over his face. Shi smiled and accepted. They sat below the window and shared the food as Mujinku elaborated on his plan.
