Chapter 28 - Female Wiles

 

The terrified guard placed the tray in the center of the room and sat on the stool by the door. Mujinku cautiously came forward and sat down. “I could share with you Shi.” He offered in a docile tone.

 

“Nuh-uh.” The guard said, determinedly fixing his gaze on the floor at his feet. “The boss said youse couldn't share wit' her.”

 

Mujinku caught Shitenshi's eye and winked. She glanced at the guard and nodded back. When she spoke her tone was sweet and convincing. “Come on, big bad and ugly will never know.” The man glanced up at her in shock, not noticing Mujinku's stealthy movements. “Well I'll never tell him, and it was Jinku's idea, so he certainly won't tell him, and I know you don't like being his toady, so I know you'll never tell.” Mujinku stifled a laugh as Shi blinked serenely.

 

The guard was floored. His mouth hung open as he tried to make a coherent argument. “B-but Z-z-zard said n-no.” Mujinku had to hand it to him; the guy was dumb but loyal.

 

Shitenshi pouted beautifully and walked closer to the guard. “Can I at least have some milk, please?” She blinked again. “Just a tiny sip?”

 

“A-alright.”

 

“Thank you very much!” Shitenshi smiled winningly and walked over, noting that most of the food was gone, though Mujinku had eaten nothing. She took a sip and sighed happily before walking back to the window. “Arigato. Oh, and gomen for hitting you with the stool earlier.”

 

“What?”

 

“Well I was just so mad about Jinku being here, and I was really aiming for the younger idiot brother next to you. Anyway, I'm terribly sorry for hitting you. I know it wasn't your idea to kidnap me and hurt me and starve me in here. Gomen.”

 

“Uh, right.” The guard looked helplessly at Mujinku, who had just stuffed the last bit of rice into his mouth.

 

Swallowing quickly, he shrugged and whispered, “I dunno, she confuses me too.”

 

The human was about to reply when the door was thrown open again. “Well?” The younger lizard demanded from the doorway.

 

“All gone!” Mujinku downed the last of the milk. Shi snorted and turned, glaring daggers at the youkai.

 

“Good. You, come.” He demanded, glancing at the guard before walking out.

 

The man looked from one to the other, receiving an encouraging smile from Mujinku and a smile and a soulful blink from Shitenshi. Nodding, he too left and the door slammed closed behind him.

 

Shi hurried over and plopped down next to the boy as he began retrieving the food he had stored away. “You were brilliant, baby!” He teased.

 

“Arigato, arigato, arigato.” Shitenshi started blowing kisses to imaginary fans. Mujinku grimaced dramatically and threw a dumpling at her, which she caught with a smile, tossing the entire thing into her mouth.

 

Mujinku took a deep breath. “Shi, what did you mean earlier, about last time?”

 

Startled, Shi looked at him and sighed. “They're the ones from twelve years ago.”
