Chapter 31 - Battle For Freedom

 

“Ohhh yeah!” Mujinku began to twirl his staff in a simple warm up. “Together again!”

 

Shi giggled and strode back into the main room, approaching the third door. She laid her ear against it and was intrigued to pick up a garbled conversation. One of the speakers sounded almost like their guard. Just as she isolated the voices, Mujinku walked in, staff across his shoulders.

 

“OK, I'm ready. Bring on the bad guys!”

 

“Shhh.” Shitenshi hid a smile as she waved her companion silent. “I can hear them…”

 

Mujinku twirled his staff idly for a few moments before loosing patience. “Well?” Shitenshi shot him a look and listened for a few more minutes.

 

“OK. One of the humans, I'm pretty sure it was our regular guard, wanted to know why they were still keeping me, since I was only supposed to be the bait for you. And Zard said `why waste a good opportunity' and besides there's something he wants to figure out about me. I have a hunch I know what that means. I think the human was about to protest more when the younger brother came in. He said `it's almost ready,' whatever `it' is. Seems to be outside, but I don't know anything else about it. And the brother brought two in with him, making it five humans and 2 youkai.”

 

“We can take them.”

 

“Heck yes we can!” Shi backed away from the door, moving to stand beside the other hanyou. “Shall we?”

 

“Don't you need a weapon?”

 

“Nah. I was never trained on one. Wouldn't know what to do with it. But my uncle taught me self defense.”

 

“Oh. We should remedy that when this is all over; get you properly trained on something.”

 

“I'll make a note of that.” Shi muttered dryly. “So are we ready?”

 

“Yep. Let's do this!” With a nod, both teens ran the short distance and threw themselves at the door. It splintered easily as the occupants of the large room turned in shock.

 

“What?” One of the humans gasped in surprise.

 

“Did you miss us?” Mujinku drawled, twirling his staff. The five humans and the younger lizard were standing in a small group by the door. Zard was at the far end of the room, his back to them, apparently oblivious to the commotion.

 

“Get them!” The smaller youkai ordered. The five men charged, only to be repulsed by Mujinku's weapon and Shitenshi's fists. They backed off, unprepared for the onslaught.

 

“Mujinku…” Shitenshi was staring at the far side of the room, where Zard still stood.

 

“Go, Tenshi, I can handle this.” Mujinku whispered, eyeing the bickering humans.

 

“Are you sure?”

 

“Trust me.” Shi looked at him, startled, and he winked at her before turning his attention back to their opponents. “Come on, is that the best you got?” He taunted.

 

“Thank you.” Shi squeezed Mujinku's shoulder and dashed off, weaving between the boxes, her eyes locked on her prey.
