35 - Flight to Freedom
Shitenshi woke just before dawn. The first thing she saw was a familiar silver ponytail. Blinking, she looked past the other hanyou's head and saw a dusty office. She sat up and suppressed a giggle when the boy's bandana twitched as his ears followed her movements. “You should really rest.” Mujinku said, startling her.
“I didn't realize you were awake.” Shitenshi hugged his shoulders from behind. “Did you sleep at all?”
“Nah.” Mujinku turned and kissed her lightly. “You needed it more.” The slight dim to his golden eyes belayed his cheerful tone.
“Riiiiight” Shi hugged him again. “So, while I was out of it, did you happen to find out where we are?”
“Yep.” Mujinku slid across the floor and picked up a piece of paper, handing it over his shoulder for her to read.
She quickly skimmed the front and then flipped it over. “Located blah blah Honshu blah blah Sadoga-Sh-Shima?” Shitenshi looked up quickly. “We're on Sadoga-Shima?” Mujinku nodded. “Oh boy.”
“Understatement.”
Shitenshi looked out the window for a moment before cracking a small smile. “So you want to get out of here?”
“Uh, how? We don't have a boat, or a pl- no way!” Shitenshi's smile brightened. “No freakin way! You could really carry me all that distance?”
“Yeah. My great-grandfather carried Ri in the palm of his hand. I'm not a full blood, but I could still carry you, easy.”
“Cool!” Mujinku's eyes were shinning brightly as he looked between the window and the girl curled above him. “You really could do it? Really? I could fly with you?”
“Yes.” Shi chuckled. “Now do you want to sit here or do you want to fly?” Mujinku's answer was to jump to his feet. Shitenshi allowed him to eagerly pull her to hers as she stifled her laughter and put on a concerned face. “OK, now are you sure you want to do this Jinku? Cause I'm sure we could rent a boat from someone.”
At the desperate look on his face, she couldn't hold in her laughter any longer and she allowed the boy to pull her from the office. “OK, ok, I won't tease you any more. Let's just get out of here.” Shitenshi pulled Mujinku around so that he was facing away from her and wrapped her arms around his chest. “Um, wait a sec. What about your staff?”
Mujinku looked startled and glanced between the staff and his harness, worrying his lip. “Um… I can't put it in the holster or it would hit you. Perhaps I could hold it?”
Shitenshi considered the staff. “Lemme try something.” She held her arms out palms up and lay the staff across them so that it ran over his chest. “Ok, wrap your arms around this.” The boy complied. “Now grab onto my hands, and hold on.” He did as instructed and she unfurled her wings with a rustle. “See, insta-seat belt!” Shitenshi took a deep breath and asked. “Now I'm completely serious, Mujinku. Do you trust me?”
Without hesitating the boy squeezed her hands. “I trust you, Tenshi.”
“Good. Here we go.” She wrapped her legs around Mujinku's waist, piggy-back style, and then began to pump her wings slowly. Hesitantly, they rose a foot, then two. Shitenshi found her balance and the rhythmic beat of her wings increased. They rose higher and cleared the rooftops as the sun cleared the horizon.
“Woah!” was all Mujinku could manage to say as his breath caught in his throat. The island below them was a blur of green and grey shadows and Honshu was a strip of darkness on the far horizon. The sun's first rays dyed the deep blue waves golden as the two teens rose higher. A few clouds of pink and purple drifted above and a few small boats drifted on the water below. Mujinku had never seen anything so beautiful, nor felt anything as exhilarating as flying. “Shi, it's…” He trailed off, unable to find the word to describe his feelings.
“It's magical.” She said, a smile on her lips.
“Yes.”
