The dawn sun was barely begining to show over the eastern skyline when the army of the Inu Clan moved into their final position. Kasumi and Takata poised at the very edges of the treeline ahead ready to dart across the river. Tension sang through the ranks as a patrol of wolves marched steadily by. Remembering Sango's report of the spider youkia, he looked closer and noticed spider darted and swung through the trees above the partol. the forests shadows seemed to wrap themselves around this youkia. If he hadn't known to expect it he might have missed it without being able to search for its youki.
He made a small click with his teeth and Kasumi slowy turned her head to catch him in her peripheral vision so the motion wouldn't alert the wolves and he guestured silently to his eyes and pointed up to the treetops. He saw he glance towards the wolves and above them. The tip of her tail twitched and he knew she saw. With the barest of movements, she alerted the rest.

As soon as the partol passed, they leapt into action. Takata, being the only one of the kitsune other tha Tonkouro who had dealt with the spiders in the past, leapt toward it himself. Within seconds, the patrol was down and they drug the bodies into the bushes to avoid immediate detection. The spider youkia's legs dangled creepily from the branches and Takata laborously rolled the body along a thick branch to flop into the bushes with the bodies of the wolves.

He sent silent thanks to the heavens that entering the enemy's territory had gone according to plan as he, Tonkouro, Sesshomaru and a small group of warriors crossed the river and darted up into the trees. Sango and Miroku on Killala crossed with the second small batch and Kohaku and joined them in the treetops. Knowing the rest would follow, they set off into the heart of the wolves territory and Kagome.

The ladies maids, had come back in and touched up her hair and make-up. Kagome, stood trembling and just let them work on her. Her head was blank and her heart felt like it was made of ice. She felt defeated in every way. The small shred of hope she had been clinging to had been dashed. There was nothing more anyone could do. She was only a scared little ningen trapped in a nightmare of hate and sorrow.

Ayame tried to comfort her but her words of comfort fell onto stone ears. Even the young wold queen's tears could not break through the indifferent wave of depression that had consumed her. She felt like she was made of stone. There was nothing left.

After what could have been seconds or hours two large and intimidating red eyed wolves came through the door, followed by a spider youkia. Kagome barely registered that this spider was the first male she'd seen among the spider's ranks, but the information floated away in her mind

"Is she ready?" His voice cut the silence and was surprisingly melodious given his deeply male features.

Her curiosity seemed to be winning over her depression, because a part of her didn't care what his voice sounded like, but that part was growing quieter as Kagome took in his appearance with more attentivness.

The head lady's maid curtsied low. " Hai, we have finished, Prince Ayumu."

He nodded at her and looked at Kagome fully for the first time. In profile, he had been handsome, but as he looked fully at her, he was, for lack of a better word, gorgeous. His eyes were a crystal blue and his darkly tanned skin and deeply blue black hair made them almost glow.

He smiled at her and it was actually a genuine smile, the first she'd seen from a spider youkai. "I'm glad the dress suits you so well. I wasn't sure of your complection when I made it."

"You made this?" She asked tentativley, her voice thoaty from misuse.

He nodded. "From the fur of the northern otter-bear. It's fur gives you warmth and is waterproof. It also serves as a type of protection."

She was startled. "Protection?"

His eyes glanced through with the barest hints of sorrow. "My mother wishes for you the worst of fates. I would not wish it so. The spiders are as corrupt as the wolves. You will not find help this day, Lady Miko. The dress is the only token I have."

She looked at him, trying to decipher if he was telling the truth. There was no hint of hidden intention in his eyes, only sorrow. "Thank you."

He nodded and then his eyes went blank, crystal turning to ice. "Come. The ceremony begins."

She took a deep breath as the two wolves moved to flank her and she set off behind Ayumu to the end of her freedom. There was no hope left in her, only the quiet acceptance of her fate, but she was touched by the show of kindess and the proof that even in the deepest dark, there are tiny points of light.

As they neared the main cave Kagome could hear the low pounding of drums, almost like a heartbeat and the low chorus of hums and growls. At the end of the corridor a long thick fur hung down, covering the opening and was parted by two adolesent female wolves, who curtsied low as they passed. Kagome coud not help her pause of surprise. Leading down to the main floor of the cave was a massive staircase. If she hadn't come through the main cave last night, she would have never beleived it had been constructed in a single night. It was made mainly out of wood, but the steps were laid with slabs of white stone supported by the wooden frame snugly and were carved with depictions of the wolves great battles or triumphs and queens of the past and polished smooth. Her bare feet felt the imprint of every step and she felt power singing through the air and into her doubleing and trebling until as her foot left the last step it mounted into a crescendo and she felt as is she were glowing. Her heart beat in time with the drums and she and the wolves of what would be her clan all breathed as one. Even the red eyes wolves entered a state of calm as she stood there, basking in their energy.

She looked around at them all and could not remember why she had been so against this. How could feeling this, the pack energy, be a bad thing? They would die for her and serve her as she saw fit. She, a Queen of the Umi Mountain Wolf Clan, the most powerful clan of wolves in the land.

The mountain itself seemed to hold its breath as the power faded. Kagome felt the power in her leaving as if being sucked out and only as she came down from the headiness of it did she realize that the power was being absorbed  by the dress instead of disapating like the rest of it. Alarmed, she touched the fabric and it almost crackled with energy before it absorbed completley and went out. She sent a glance at Ayumu, but his back was to her as all the wolves faced the entrance of the cave. Her mind was still one with the pack as she turned too.

There at the entrance, stood Kouga. He was dressed in all the finery of a king, long white furs adorned with crystals and gems. His arms were bare of fur and golden bands circled his wrists representing the manacles of leadership. His feet were bare, like hers and the rest of the clan, for they were all conected through the earth as Tsuki no Kami's children and that connection sang through the very rocks of the mountain. Only his eyes remained distant, like cold red rubies. Looking into them snapped Kagome awake.

Kagome struggled free of the wamrth of the pack mind. This was wrong!! She had almost let the pack mind make her accept this willingly. Her earlier depression faded to the recesses of her mind as she broke free. She glared at Kouga and he smirked.

"Come to me my future Queen,
To be protected and ruled
By my side.
The mountain breaths you power,
So the clan beaths you power,
Power to rule and power to obey,
Through the stones bathed in Tsuki no Kami's light
And the lesser light of day.
Walk in his glory
To serve and to rule,
The Clan Of Tsuki no Kami's Wolves
In Day's warm and Night's cool."

As he quoted the ritual's first chant the power from before came back. It was not quite as strong as the crescendo of before, but it did not disipate this time. Instead it hung in the air, almost tangible, and Kagome felt its pull. The power knew her now and she it. She could not fight the pull completley, but she was aware of the hint of influence of pack mentality. Only the thought of Hinata being tortured let that small part stay. She would go through with this ritual, but she would keep her own mind throughout, even if the pack mind would make it easier on her.

As she took the first step towards him, she felt compelled to speak but did not know what to say. The pack energy flared in her and the words came to her lips almost unconsciously.

"I come to you, My King
My ruler and protector
To serve at your side
The mountain breaths me power,
So the clan breaths me power
Power to rule, power to obey,
Through the stones bathed in Tsuki no Kami's light
And the lesser light of day.
I walk in his glory,
To serve and to rule
The Clan of Tsuki no Kami's Wolves
In Day's warmth and Night's cool."

As she spoke the last words, her hand went into his and the power that had been building as she spoke broke into waves. The clan howled around them as the sun bathed them in warmth and light. She fought to stay aware as the pack mind rejoiced at the completion of the first part of the ritual.

She took her hand back and turned to the sun as she and Kouga lead the wolves outside for the second part of the aincent ritual of rulers. The moonstone glared in the sun's light, shining almost blindingly light in the noon sun. The clan spilled out around them as they aproached the stone arch where they would say the vows and the clan would officially anoint her as Queen. Her stomach lurched as she realized that that great white stone was to be the stage of the final part of the ritual. Panic rose in her as she realized her time was running out. She was bare minutes from being trapped forever.

She would have bolted if the Black Queeen hadn't chosen that moment to reveal herself, coming from the trees with her spiders. Ayumu went to stand at his mother's side. Hinata floated unconsciously in the sickly glowing web at Silina's side. Ayame came from nowhere and went to stand near the arch. Her eyes were full of sadness and sympathy and her tears glinted in the sunlight. She remembered Aymuma's words, 'You will not find help on this day.' and realised it was true. Everyone here was just as trapped as she by the Black Queen.

OK. So I'm back on track writing. I'm sooo very sorry that I've been gone so long, but laptops crashing, working two jobs and trying to work in a relationship with someone who doesn't really get fanfictioning makes it kind of hard. But I'm finishing this story come hell or high water. The decision has been made on Kouga. Thank you for your responses and loyalty. I'll probably post a longer chap tomorrow, but after that its probably going to be a weekly update around this time. We still have ALOT of ground to cover. :D
