The sun was just peeking over the eastern border as Inuyasha's army moved into its final position. Kasumi and a handful of the best inu trackers, along with Takata and the three kitsune who had shown themselves most proficient in training, were crouched just inside the treeline at the wolves' border. On the other side of the river, a partol of wolves was passing. Remembering Sango's warning about the spiders, Inuyasha scanned the treetops above the wolf patrol. He spotted a swiftly moving shadow darting through the branches. The forest itself seemed to be aiding in shading the form from view and the shadows deepened as it moved as it they were following it. He might not have noticed it if he hadn't had forewarning, since searching for the enemy's youki would have given away their position.

He huffed in the barest whisper of sound and Kasumi slowly turned her head the barest hint, so as not to alert the wolves with her movement and still see her prince in her peripheral vision. He flicked a claw to his eyes and the up to the treetops. He saw her glance into the trees above the wolves. The tip of her tail flicked and he knew she saw the threat. With the barest movements she alerted the rest of her small group and then, just as the patrol passed, they sprang into action. Foxfire flashed as they leaped across the river. Inuyasha saw Takata sailing towards the spider himself and, in a split second, the patrol was down. Kasumi and the others drug the bodies of the patrol into the bushes to aviod immediate detection before darting into the trees. He glanced up to see the spider's legs dangling creepily as Takata rolled its body along a branch to drop in the bushes with the wolves.

He barked sharply and he and and a group of warriors, including his brother and Tonkouro leaped across the river and into the treetops with the others. The second group, including Sango and Miroku on Killala and the rest of the kitsune and Kohaku joined them and he sent a silent prayer of thanks to the heavens that entering the enemy's territory had gone so smoothly. Knowing the rest would follow, he set off towards the heart of the wolves' territory and Kagome.

Kagome blinked the sweat out of her eyes, unwilling to move so much as a finger, as Kouga addressed his wolves. He had been speaking for some time, and as the sun rose to it's zienth, the temperature in the figurative bowl was rising to unbearable levels. She seemed to have gone into a state of waking unconsciousness. Her mind was as blank as the stares of the red eyed wolves as they watched Kouga drone on and on. Then the tone of his voice changed and caught her attention.

"Custom and change," He was saying, "though opposite in nature, guide all of us through our lives in harmony. Change is what guides us today. No youkai has ever mated a miko to be his queen! No youkai clan has ever looked to a miko for leadership! This, my wolves, is a day of days!" He shouted. "When the ceremony is complete, we shall be the strongest clan in the world!" He turned to look at Kagome as howls rang in the air. "This woman, shall show us a new path. She will be your queen. She will protect you. She will be at my side as we carve out a new future for our pups. A new inheritance to be proud of!" He turned back to the his wolves, and through the sliver of pack power that Kagome had let root within her she felt their elation, their hope. "So, my wolves. Do you accept her as your Queen!"

As the howls rang Kagome felt something new within her. The pack power split and changed and grew as Kouga turned towards her. He drew from his belt, a dagger made of silver and adorned with sappires and diamonds. Her human instinct was to run or fight as he advanced on her, but the pack power bolted her in place and told her he would not hurt her. He put it to her wrist and it dug into her flesh the tinest bit. A small line of blood welled to the surface and wet the edges of the blade. She could literally feel the dagger as if it were an extension of her body as he held it in the air. He said nothing and slashed a line in the stone arch that held the faintest tinges of red. Now that she was looking, Kagome could see thousands of them.

Ayame moved forward for the first time and handed him a set of manacles, almost identical to Kouga's and her own. He didn't even acknowlegde her as he took them. When he turned to Kagome, she felt her heart racing with a combination of her own fear and of the pack elation. The later made her raise her arms in a thoughtless motion to allow him to snap the cold bands of gold onto her wrists. As she felt their cold weight, the pack mind told her that the second part of the ritual was almost complete. The heat pulsing from the moonstone marked the third and if she could have found the voice, she might have screamed.

Inuyasha's forces moved forward at an achingly slow pace. They were fanned out through the treetops to further avoid detetion, but it seemed like a wasted effort, as they had seen nothing. Even the local wildlife seemed to have fled the area and the sounds of drums rang in his ears. Sango tapped her sword scabbard to gain his attention.

"We are nearing the courtyard." She spoke in a breathy whisper of a sound.

He came to a halt and the rest followed suit as his generals, including his brother, gathered to him. Hiroki, the young inu, spoke first in a whisper. "Why have we seen none of the wolves?"

Jenta's grizzled snout pulled back into a toothy grimace. "This concerns me as well." He growled.

"The drums mean a ceremony." Sango breathed.

There was a moment of silence. "So every wolf and spider will be in that bowl." Takata muttered.

"It will be a full out war." Kasumi whisered.

"There was always the possibility of that." Tonkouro reminded her.

Inuyasha looked around at them all, an then further, to the faces of inu and kitsune that had sworn to follow him to their deaths and might just do so today. "We all know what this day might bring. Any who turn away now will suffer no reprocussions. The rest of you follow me to victory for we shall walk away the victors. No one shall better the inu clan and its allies." His tone was quiet, but his words rang nonetheless He saw faces of fear turn into looks of determination. and then he looked at his brother. "Call your army, my brother. Let us show the wolves what it means to invoke the wrath of the inu princes."

Sesshomaru smirked as he drew the Tenseiga. It pulsed in his hands and then went still. "It is done." Then he sheathed the katana and drew his other sword. They nodded at each other and then set off once again, towards the battle of a lifetime with the noon sun shining on their backs.

Kagome fought within herself not to let the pack mind take her over yet again as the second part of the ceremony came to its end. She would not be forced to enjoy what was about to happen. But just as she could not hope for escape, she could not keep the pack from influencing her. As the words were spoken, binding her to them as Kouga's mate and their Queen she became more aware of the split she'd felt before. She realized now that though the pack was one, there were two distinct energies. The tainted power of the red eyed members of the clan, and the pure power from the wolves who had resisted the evil, but were not strong enough to fight free of the pack. Their power was less, but she sensed that Ayame was giving them strength and hope. A fight was in the works, a revolt. Fear lanced through her for the young Queen, because if she could feel this power shift so quickly after binding to them, then so could Kouga. And what Kouga knew, the Black Queen knew too. They would not let her live to fight against them.

And then Kouga spoke the words that Kagome had feared hearing the most and they drove every other thought from her mind. "And so I take this woman to be my mate. Let us consumate the bond!"

Howls rang in a loud chorus and the drums took up a new tempo as Kouga took her hand. No! She thought frantically. NO! I cannot do this. I can't go through with it! But her body moved of it's own accord and Silina drew Hinata into her line of sight. Something snapped within her and tears she had been fighting rolled down her cheeks in a river of sorrow as she was lifted onto the hot stone. Unable to resist trying she reached for her miko power and was plunged into the numbing darkness. For the first time, she welcomed it, but then she was back in her body and Kouga had joined her on the moonstone. There was nowhere to run, nothing she could do as he reached for her and drew her to him.

He leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I told you that you would be mine, Miko, and that you would bow to me one day. Today is that day." And then he bit her, hard right where Inuyasha's mark was.

She cried out in pain and he pulled back to howl long and loud with her blood running down his chin. She felt his mark burn its way onto her neck and because she resisted its pull, it felt as if it was being branded there instead of flowing like Inuyasha's had. Inuyasha's mark was still there, she could feel it, but Kouga's mark burned fresh with power almost drowning it out in painful agony. Kouga finished his howl and looked at her, his eyes swimming with predatory lust and triumph. He reached for the tie holding her dress up and Kagome knew that in seconds, it would all be over.

And there is chapter 19!!! This one was a little tough for me, but the next chapter is probably going to be the most difficult one yet. The great battle.

But alas, I have bad news. My two jobs seem to be cooperating in trying to make sure I have absolutley no time off and my girlfreind an I are fighting constantly. I am going to continue to write and do weekly updates. I promise I wont drop this story again, but it might be sporadic when I actually get the chance to type. This also means my typo's might get worse, but I am buying the best spell check software I can get with my income tax and I'm also looking to buy that Dragon thing. If I can get it to type all the japanese phrases and terms then the rewrite will go according to plan too and my updates will come quicker. I'd really like to go back and fix all the mistakes I've made, but getting the story finished and up is my main priority.

So until next week. Happy reading!!
