Chapter One

Inuyasha gazed into the horizon as the sun began to sink behind the mountains. He sighed heavily as a warm tear ran down his pale face; the memory lingered in his mind as though it happened only yesterday. He could still smell her beautiful scent and hear her laughter fading into the coldness. His lip began to quiver as his amber eyes swelled with tears.

'Kagome, why'd you have to die?' He thought sadly. It hurt him badly as he recalled what happened only a year ago.

-Flashback-

She smiled and watched as Inuyasha chased Shippo in the open field. He looked up at her and grinned, 'Wow, she looks so beautiful when she smiles like that.' Shippo had sat next to the hanyou's feet and gazed up at his friend.

"Inuyasha, what are you staring at?" The kitsune asked confused.

The hanyou blushed deeply, "None of your business!" he lunged at the fox demon, but it was too late Inuyasha picked up Shippo by the scruff of his kimono and dangled him loosely.

"Ha! I've got you twerp!" Inuyasha said victoriously.

Shippou squirmed in the hanyou's grasp, kicking and clawing wildly, "Kagome help!"

He could hear her sweet soft laughter, "Inuyasha, put him down." He looked up at Kagome,

"Feh! Stay out of it wench!" He grinned as he shook the kitsune.

She growled and yelled "Put him down Inuyasha right this moment!" Inuyasha could tell her anger was beginning to rise, but he only laughed as he tossed the little fox demon to the ground. 'Why does she always take his side?'

"We'd better get back to the village, its getting dark and I promised to help Sango." Kagome said calmly.

Inuyasha sighed heavily as he turned and began to walk back to the village. Shippo quickly ran past him shouting, "Kagome! Wait for me!"

Everything had been so peaceful since Naraku was defeated, though Miroku had left on his own, everything was just wonderful. He walked a little ways behind Kagome and Shippo who were giggling quite loudly. He strained to hear their conversation.

"I saw Inuyasha staring at you Kagome, but I don't know why." The kitsune said quietly.

"Oh?" She replied, "Are you sure Shippo? Maybe your just seeing things. Why would Inuyasha be staring at me?"

Those words stung his heart, "Why wouldn't I?" he whispered to himself.

They reached the village a few minutes later to see it completely dark.

Inuyasha ran next to Kagome's side and growled, "Something's not right here!" she nodded, holding Shippo tightly in her arms. He could smell human blood, but he couldn't see any bodies, or for that matter anything.

"Kagome, I'm scared!" Shippo whispered burring himself deeper in her arms.

The wind began to blow heavily around them and Inuyasha wasn't sure what was going on, so out of instincts her grabbed Kagome's arm and pulled her close to him. She gasped at his sudden reaction. The hanyou couldn't sense any demons near by, and this puzzled him to no end. Inuyasha could hear the faint laughing of children, he looked down at Kagome whose eyes were shut tight and her arms wrapped around the fox demon, as if her life depended on it. Then he looked into the trees to find green eyes glaring at him from the brush. Everything began to spin and Inuyasha began to feel dizzy, that's when it all went dark.

When he had awaken, he sat straight up feeling a little sick to his stomach, he noticed that he was in Kaede's hut. Looking around he saw Kagome asleep a few feet away from himself, and the kitsune still wrapped in her arms. Sango entered the hut and was startled to see him already up.

"Oh, your awake Inuyasha." She said placing some wood she had carried into a little fire.

"What happened Sango?" He asked puzzled on how he had gotten into the hut.

She looked up at the white haired Hanyou "I was going to ask you the same question myself."

"What?!" He stood erect, his amber eyes piercing her thoughts as he stared at her.

"Well when you didn't come back to the village a few nights ago, Kaede and I begun to wonder what happened. Then when you still didn't arrive in the morning, we grew worried and some of the village men went searching for you three, I myself went with them…."

His eyes went wide and his mouth hung open, he couldn't believe what she was saying 'We didn't arrive at the village'.

Sango continued, watching Inuyasha closely "We found you in the meadow unconscious, you had your arms around Kagome and she was holding Shippo. She hasn't let go of him yet."

"How long were we out for?" He asked completely lost.

"About three days." She replied.

"Three days! Are you serious?!" He yelled loudly, though he didn't mean to say it loudly or show any emotion to how surprised her was.

She nodded as she got to her feet and sighed "I have to get some water from the lake, you stay here and keep an eye on Kagome, Inuyasha."

All she got from him was the usual "Feh". She quickly got a small bucket and hurried off out into the forest. Inuyasha turned looking back to Kagome, he walked over to her and kneeled.

"I hope your okay, I don't know what I'd do with out you Kagome." He whispered so low, it would have been almost impossible to hear even if she was awake. Kagome stirred and slowly opened her eyes.

"In-u-yasha?" She said softly as though she had just awaken from a pleasant dream.

He leaned over her and placed his hand next to her "I'm here."

Kagome let go of the sleeping kitsune and sat up, wrapping her long arms around him. He gasped shocked "K..Kagome?"

She began to cry softly "Oh Inuyasha I was so scared." He could feel her tears begin to soak his haori, he wasn't sure what to do or say, so he hugged, placing his chin on her silky black hair.

"Its ok." He muttered.

Her cries began to quiet down as he gently stroked her hair with his long fingers. She looked up at him, her face was tear stained, and her cheeks were pink. "Thank you Inu--" She began, only to have him put his fingers to her lips.

"Shhh," Inuyasha looked into her sparkling eyes. He leaned over her and gave her a quick hug pushing her away as Sango and Kaede entered the small hut.

"Oh," They said in unison as they saw Inuyasha pull away from Kagome and quickly rush out of the hut before either of them could say anything else. The air blew in his face as he leaped through the tree tops.

"What was I thinking?!" He said angrily.

'She needed for you to comfort her, you wouldn't just want her to cry!' A voice said in the back of his head. 'But it's Kagome, I couldn't, I can't!' He argued as he landed on his feet, crouched down feeling the soft soil between his toes. He stood and looked around, and climbed the God tree, sitting on his favorite branch. The hanyou sighed as he laid against the tree. He tried to remember what happened a few days ago, to what Sango said, he had been holding on to Kagome, in a meadow and they were unconscious.

'What happened?' He thought frowning as he strained his mind to think. He heard the snap of a twig near by, his muscles tensed as he hid in the leaves of the tree. That's when he saw her with a bow and her quiver with a few arrows left lying lazily in it. Inuyasha dropped down from the tree right in front of her. Kagome let out a horrific scream, throwing her arms in front of her face as a shield.

"What are you doing here wench!" Inuyasha growled glaring at her.

She opened her eyes and looked at the hanyou, relieved he wasn't some demon, she lowered her hands and sighed, "You scared me to death Inuyasha."

He Grunted "Feh! If only!"

Kagome looked up at him and he could see the hurt in her eyes and face. Her eyes began to swell with tears threatening to fall. His head screamed 'Shit! See what you did! Now fix it!' His facial expression changed suddenly as he looked at her.

"I -- Kagome." He placed his hand on her shoulder, but she stepped back.

"How could you say such a thing!" She sounded so hurt and it was his fault. Kagome turned from him and ran away, as fast as her legs would go.

"Fuck! Wait Kagome!" He gasped going after her. He grabbed her arms and she looked at him sadly but with growing hatred.

"Kago--" He began, but she punched him with her free hand.

Then she yelled, "SIT!" as loud as she could.

Inuyasha's face plummeted into the ground, he couldn't move as she took off again. He laid there for a moment until she was out of his sight. He slowly stood and growled angrily, he knew where she was heading and he was going to beat her there. He jumped into the treetops and quickly went to the bone eater's

She grew angry and he could feel her body grow tense under his hands "It's too late for that!"

Inuyasha looked deep into her eyes and begged, "Please Kagome, don't leave me."

Kagome growled, "Nothing you can say or do can keep me here any longer!" she pushed him back and walked towards the well, but he grabbed her wrist and turned her, forcing Kagome to face him.

'Don't leave me, I'll die without you Kagome!' He thought but he couldn't tell her that for he'd be saying that he was a weakling and need a woman to keep him alive.

"Please Kagome!" Inuyasha caressed her cheek with his free hand, he could see her muscles relax at his gentle touch.

She shook her head violently, "NO!" and tried to free herself from his strong grasp.

Inuyasha saw that she no longer wanted to be there or be with him, so he sighed heavily and closed his eyes and in a sad and low voice he said. "Since there's no way you'd want to stay here I will let you go, but let me say goodbye before you leave me for good."

The hanyou felt her stop moving and he looked at her, he didn't know what he was going to say, but he would try. Kagome nodded and stared unblinking into his eyes. Inuyasha ran his hand through her silky hair, and took a deep breath, letting her fragrance consume him. He didn't want to let get go but he couldn't force her to stay either.

"I don't know how to say this, but I know what I've said and done has hurt you, and I'm sorry but I cant force you to do anything you don't want to do. So I'm letting you go." He let go of her wrist and looked down at the ground, his silver hair shadowed his sad face from her and he felt the tears swell in his eyes and yet he forced them away.

"Inuyasha?" She whispered as she placed her hand over his, which lay on her cheek. He looked up at her and saw a frown on her face leave, but a confused expression still lingered.

"There's one more thing." he said softly, pulling her close to his body. He leaned down and captured her lips softly with his.

She kissed him back a little surprised by his action and put her hands behind his neck pulling him as close to her as possible. Her chest pressed against Inuyasha's as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Kissing her again needily, and a little rougher, the hanyou closed his eyes as his mind raced and his heart pounded in his ears as she nibbled on his bottom lip.

When their kiss had finally ended he embraced her, holding Kagome in his arms tightly never wanting to ever let go of her. He wanted for them to stay like that forever. Inuyasha quickly let of her when he heard the crunching sound of dead leaves behind him. The hanyou turned to see her standing only yards away, her bow and arrow drawn, and she aimed for him.
