InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Into The Well ❯ Time Travel ( Chapter 2 )
"Good morning, Tokyo! It's a beautiful day!"
Kagome pried her eyes open, trying to ignore the overly peppy voice of the early morning DJ blaring from her alarm radio, and hoping to hear her favorite song before she left for school.
She stretched and yawned. She may have been an excellent student, but that didn't mean she liked school. If anything, she wished it started later in the day!
Any attempt of getting out of bed was completely forgotten when a small body pelted her in the chest and pinned her to the bed. "Happy birthday, my favorite sis!"
Ruffling Souta's hair, she flipped the small boy off of her and tickled his sides. "Thanks squirt!" She stood. "Let's eat some breakfast!"
The two Higurashi children trampled down the stairs making the small house sound like there were twenty kids inside instead of just two.
After a grand birthday breakfast of scrambled eggs with sausage shaped like little octupus on the side, she dressed to do her early morning chores around the shrine. Her grandpa pulled her inside and told her she didn't have to do her chores since it was her birthday. Just as predicted, he gave her a strange artifact and for an hour explaining it's importance to her and her heritage of holy people.
The morning started to pass quickly, and she had to put on her uniform and leave for school before she was late.
Saying her goodbyes to her mother, she grabbed her neon yellow school bag and dashed out the door. She had almost cleared the shrine grounds when her brother caught up to her.
"Kagome! Buyo is in the well house!" The poor kid looked near tears.
She shrugged. "What's wrong, squirt? Are you scared?" Kagome giggled and followed Souta to the old well house. They both peeked inside the cracked door.
"Boo!" Souta screamed, earning him a smack in the head. "Who is scared now, sis?"
Kagome pouted. "I'll get the cat, I'm already running late as it is." Carefully sliding the old doors open, she lay her bag down and walked down the steps. "Buyo! Buyo! Here kitty kitty!" she called, hoping the cat would come to her instead of making her look for it. Grandpa had already forbidden them to even look at the Bone Eater's Well, he'd skin her alive if he knew she was inside of the old building.
Now she had a pretty good idea why. The place was disgusting and dirty, not to mention the well itself, covered with a board with one of grandpa's useless ofuda on top. She probably had more power in her pinkie finger than that man had in his entire body.
Buyo slinked around her legs, the best an obese cat could slink, making her scream. "Stupid cat..." she muttered, and picked Buyo up. "Found Buyo!" she yelled up to Souta, but he just looked at her in shock.
The barrier on the well was breaking, filling the room with an eerie blue glow.
Kagome looked at her brother, nerves on end. "There's something big and scary behind me isn't there?"
Souta nodded his head, a fearful look on his tiny round face.
"Ok, just checking." She dropped Buyo just as the seal gave way, and she was grabbed from behind and dragged into the well. The last thing she remembered seeing was the frightened face of her brother as it disappeared, her vision filled with a brilliant blue light.
Even though she knew it wouldn't do her any good, she took a deep breath and let out a blood curdling scream.
----------
Takeshi looked out of the car window at the passing scenery. He was a little late, but it didn't matter to him. He just wished his driver would put a little more ass into getting him to school. At this rate, he wouldn't arrive until Christmas. He would have to discuss this with his mother later.
A hint of a smile graced his features as they passed the Higurashi Shrine. He was half tempted to stop and see if she needed a lift to school, but he was already so late he figured she had already left. She was never late for school.
He sighed. Maybe he would see her at WacDonalds again today. Today he would ask her to go to the movies with him. Hopefully she would say yes, and make him the happiest boy alive.
He knew the age thing would be a bit of a hurdle; after all he was nearly nineteen years old and she was only fifteen. After three years of having his eye on her, he wondered where he all of a sudden grew enough courage to even give her that apple pie yesterday.
People may look down on their relationship if they build one, but he knew there was something special about that girl. Sure she wasn't the prettiest or smartest in the world. He had much prettier girls throwing themselves at him all of the time; but he didn't want them. He wanted Kagome. He could tell she was a spitfire.
Ever since he saw her his last year of middle school he knew he wanted her. He had secretly been watching her ever since their little accidental run in while rushing to class. He had picked up her folder and brushed a piece of her bangs behind her ear, all the while enjoying the blush on her cheeks.
Returning to the present, he looked out the window and realized how far they still had to go to get to the college, and how much time he had to get there. "Put a little effort into it! Drive!" he barked at the driver, who sighed and sped up a bit.
----------
Kagome sat in the bottom of the well surrounded by bones, fighting the urge to scream. Or vomit. When she looked up, she was met by pure blue sky instead of mustly old roof.
Not knowing exactly how to react, especially after being attacked by that centipede thing, she tried her best to put her mind into survival mode; the thought was a lot easier said than done. She was a modern Tokyo girl she wasn't as self reliant in situations like this. Taking hold of the vines that had grown on the inside of the well, she pulled herself up.
"I guess I have to climb."
She took a deep breath and began to climb up, ignoring the sting of the thorns biting into her hands and the scrape of her knees on the stone walls. Coming to the lip of the well, she tossed herself over the side, her backside roughly coming into contact with the ground.
Looking around, her eyes widened.
The shrine was gone, so was all of Tokyo.
"Toto, I don't think we're in Tokyo anymore."
The forest she sat in was nothing like she had ever seen before. The colors were brilliant, greens and browns met blue cloudless sky, and the air didn't hold that city smell she had been accustomed to.
'Where the hell am I?'
Panic started to set in. Kagome's eyes started to fill with tears, clueless as to which direction to take.
The tree! She would always be able to find her way home from the tree! Wiping her eyes she stood, looking for the God Tree. Internally she jumped for joy when she spotted it and ran.
"There's the tree! With a boy pinned to it! That means home - Wait, a boy?"
Kagome stopped and looked at the boy; pinned to the tree by a single arrow, roots surrounded him. His outfit was strange, as was his hair. A breeze blew through the forest, rustling the surrounding foliage and said boy's silver hair.
"Look at those ears! Cute!" Ever the girlie girl, she climbed the roots to get a closer look at the slumbering boy. Reaching her hands up, she stalled a few times. "So cute. I think I have to touch them." She gently tweaked the ears, knowing if the boy was awake she wouldn't have a fighting chance to even get this close.
She screamed and clug to the boy when an arrow whizzed by her head.
"Who are you, and what are you doing in the forbidden forest of Inuyasha?"
Again, Kagome fought the urge to cry when she turned to face a group of what looked like feudal hunters, all with bows pointing at her.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding!" she said nervously, in an attempt to keep herself alive. "A big misunderstanding!"
----------
Takeshi moped around the cafeteria. He tutored at the middle school, yet he didn't find her. He found one of the girls she was at the restaurant with and she told him Kagome hadn't come to school that day.
Finishing his rice and beans, he headed off campus for the gym. He needed to relieve some stress; and how else would he keep the awesome body he had? He was expected to keep his appearance up, he was Takeshi Sato, heir to the Sato fortune.
Maybe he would see her tomorrow...
----------
Kagome looked around the hut she had been taken into by the village priestess, Kaede. She still had no clue what year it was, though she finally concluded it must be the feudal era. She had never seen so many top knots in her life. Everything was just so different. Even the air was almost hurthing her nose and lungs; it was so clean!
She watched the old woman stirring something in a large pot. "And exactly where do ye come from?"
She was growing tired of this question. The old woman had asked her at least twenty times already. "Tokyo," she replied.
Kaede just nodded her head. What did she expect? The answer to suddenly change?
"And what were ye doing in the Forest of Inuyasha?"
Internally Kagome groaned. Another repeat question that deserved another repeat answer. "I don't know." She was growing increasingly frustrated and just wanted to go home.
Kagome was about to start asking questions of her own when there was a series of crashes and the screaming of villagers. Without a second thought, she ran outside to face the centipede lady that had pulled her into this bizarre time in the first place.
"The jewel! Give me the jewel!" It cried.
"I don't have your jewel!" Kagome fired back. "What is she talking about?" she asked Kaede, who stood behind her.
"The jewel of four souls."
"But I don't have it!" she cried. She only had a mini replica on her key ring, but what would the monster want with a glow in the dark key chain? "If only we could lure her someplace and trap her..." Kagome pondered.
Kaede thought for a second, then it hit her. "The old dry well!"
"That thing wants me! Where is the well?" Kagome asked in a state of panic.
"The forest, to the east..."
"Where that glowing light is coming from?" Kagome cut her off. When Kaede nodded Kagome took off running as fast as her legs would take her.
"How can she see the glow?" Kaede wondered.
----------
Punch, punch, kick!
Punch, punch, kick!
Abandoning his own workout, Shin watched as his best friend beat the tar out of one of the gym's punching bags. Thank the gods it wasn't a living being or else it would be dead by now. "What's wrong? Your lady love turn you down?" he jested.
Throwing one last punch, Takeshi stopped the bag's movement. "I didn't see her today and I'm worried about her."
Shin made a face of a crying baby. "Boo hoo, cry me a river. I didn't see ANY of my girls today."
"They probably all found out about each other and killed themselves." He resumed beating the bag to pieces.
Shin grinned. "They already know."
"Then they just got tired of your stupid face and -"
What seemed to be slow motion, Shin watched Takeshi drop to the ground in a tangle of lanky limbs.
"Fuck!" He jumped into action, prepared to perform CPR, but his friend's heart still beat and he was still breathing. 'He must just be unconscious.'
He pulled out his expensive gold cell phone out of his pocket and called for an ambulance.
----------
She screamed. It was the only thing she found logical to do other than run, but her legs refused.
"So be a good little girl and hand it over, unless you'd rather feel the caress of my claws!" The demon boy, now known as Inuyasha, said to her. "I think I will have fun killing you."
He jumped, claws poised to strike.
----------
"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Sato, to be frank, we don't know what happened." Dr. Kumi Itou tried her best to talk to the boy's parents. This was the part she hated the most.
The look of sadness worn by Mrs. Sato quickly turned to anger. "What do you mean you don't know! What's wrong with my baby?"
Mr. Sato looked to Kumi in silent apology. "Kimiho, dear, please calm down." He rubbed her back in an attempt to get her to calm herself and begin thinking straight again.
"Calm down? Our son is in a coma and these crack pot doctors don't know why and you want me to calm down?" She started to cry again. "Daisuke, I can't calm down."
Dr. Itou cleared her throat. "Mrs. Sato, how about you go get a cup of coffee and we will continue this discussion when you are in a better state of mind."
Tired and stressed out, Kimiho stood and left the room.
When the door clicked, Daisuke spoke up. "Please, just tell me what you know. Help ease my mind," he said quietly.
Kumi's heart went out to them, but she knew just about as much as they did at this point. "We have to conduct more tests before we can really know anything. It is a rather odd case, I must say." She flipped through her notes.
"Odd?" he asked.
Kumi looked up. "It's like his body just stopped. His heart still beats, he breaths. Everything is just slowed down."
"Like suspended animation in science fiction?"
"In idea. We still have to do more tests."
"You will call us when you find out."
"Of course."
"Thank you, Kumi." He turned and left the room.
With a sigh, Kumi returned to her notes. She had never, in her fifteen years of practicing medicine, seen a case like this.
Now she just wanted to know how this happened and why.
Turning to her computer, she opened her email program to see if any of her collegues had simiilar cases, in hopes of finding help.
----------
Inuyasha and Kagome glared over the small fire at each other, both looking like they would kill given the chance. Kaede just found it amusing and went about her business as if the two teens weren't even there.
"Take them off. Now." He began to tug on the beads that she had somehow put on him.
Kagome crossed her arms and stuck her nose in the air. "Maybe if you wouldn't be such a jerk I might consider."
The ways he wanted to murder her were adding up, apparent from the fire in his eyes. "You are nothing but a worthless -"
"Sit boy!" She stood. "I'm going home!" On her way out, she grabbed her grime covered school uniform and marched out of Kaede's home, mumbing something to herself about 'idiot hanyous that should have more respect'.
She knew she couldn't stay home very long. After all, it was technically her fault that the jewel was in millions of pieces all over Japan. She had the talk with her grandfather about leaving Inuyasha high and dry; but he made her realize that she had a mission to complete, no matter the trials and pains she had to suffer to reach that ultimate goal.
To say she was angry and depressed would be a total understatement. She was beyond. On top of being a normal middle school girl, she now had to play the part of miko warrior, or whatever she was in this time.
She had nearly reached the well when a very angry half demon snatched her wrist and pulled her to a stop. "Don't leave."
"Don't be a jerk!" Kagome yanked her wrist back. "It's only for a few days! I miss my family!"
Inuyasha thought for a second. "Fine. Three days. If you don't come back on your own, I'm coming to get you."
She smiled. "Thanks Inuyasha! See you in a few days!" Running to the well, she gave him one last wave before vaulting herself over the side and letting the, now comforting, blue light carry her home.
When her feet touched down in the bottom of the well, Kagome sighed in relief. No matter what happened on the other side, coming back home made everything suddenly alright. She could take her baths as long as she wanted to, there wasn't only the choice of instant food, she could torture her brother, and spend time with her mother. Maybe she would even see her friends this time. She had been absent from school for two weeks at least. Knowing her friends, they would not rest until they actually saw her; even touched her probably. Their excuse: "Just checking to see if you are our Kagome! Our Kagome doesn't fall ill!"
Kagome reached around in the dark for the makeshift rope ladder Inuyasha had made. Obviously she thought it was a sweet gesture, he made the excuse that he didn't want his shard detector falling and breaking something. Finally finding the ladder she hefted her slight weight upon it and began to climb, trying to ignore the creaking it made.
As quietly as she could, she went to the doors of the well house and peeked out. No one there to notice her. Good. She slid them open just far enough for her to slip through and walked out into the warm afternoon sun.
It felt good to be home.
----------
Eri, Ayumi, and Yuka sat at their normal WacDonald's booth, only without Kagome.
Ayumi slurped on her milkshake. "I can't believe Kagome has the flu!" she said. Time for gossip, the thing the three of them were the best at.
"I know!" Yuka replied, after swallowing a bite of her cheeseburger. "And she got it on her birthday!"
"Poor girl!" They whined in unison.
They had been really worried about their friend. Kagome rarely got sick.
None of them noticed Shin approach their table. "Hello, ladies!" he greeted, smirk in place.
All three stared at him before it hit Ayumi. "Hey, you were with that Takeshi guy that gave Kagome the apple pie!"
Shin smiled. "You have a great memory!" He took a seat next to her. "Not that I wouldn't love to spend my afternoon here with you lovely ladies, I assure you I would, but I would like to speak with Kagome."
Eri eyed the boy. "What do you want with Kagome?" She asked suspicoulsy. This boy gave her bad vibes.
"It's about Takeshi."
"Why can't he be here himself?" asked Yuka.
He sighed. The last thing he expected to play was twenty questions. "Because he has been in the hospital for the past two weeks."
"What?" The girls cried.
"The day after we saw you he fell into a coma. No one knows why, even the doctors." He snuck his hand over and snatched one of Ayumi's fries, only to have her smack him.
Ayumi watched in satisfaction as Shin nursed his abused hand. "What does that have to do with Kagome?"
He snatched another fry. "Takeshi has a major crush on your friend. I think maybe if she goes to see him he may improve."
"That's a crack pot idea, if I've ever heard one!" Eri, ever the pessimist, commented.
"Yeah!" Yuka added.
He was at wits end with these girls, even though the one he sat next to was quite the cutie. "What are your names?"
"I'm not telling you!"
"Me either!"
"I'm Ayumi," she said, blushing.
Shin smiled. She was even cute when she blushed. "If I give you my phone number could you get it to Kagome for me? I think it would mean a lot to Takeshi." His smile widened when she nodded in agreement. "Perfect!" He pulled a pen from his pocket and wrote the number on a piece of napkin. "This would mean the world to Takeshi. And you can call me too, cutie!" He gave her the 'lady killer' smirk and slid the number to her. Without any word, he stood to leave. "See you, Ayumi." He winked and walked away.
Ayumi smiled dreamily.
"Ayumi!" squealed Yuka.
"Don't you have a crush on Houjo?" asked Eri.
The girl just sighed. "Who's Houjo?"
----------
After a nice long bath, Kagome felt clean for the first time in two weeks. Bathing in the feudal era would never compare to modern plumbing. Her mother had fixed her a special welcome home dinner, she helped Souta with his homework, and filled grandpa in on her adventure so far. Right now was her time to relax.
At least it was until she heard a knock at her bedroom door. "Kagome, dear?" her mother entered the room. "One of your friends is here to see you."
Kagome pulled her tired body out of bed. "Who is it, mama?"
She followed her mother downstairs. "I think it is Ayumi."
She went to the front door to see Ayumi standing patiently for her.
"How are you feeling, Kagome?" Ayumi asked. "That must be one hell of a flu bug!"
Kagome nervously laughed. "Yep, one really nasty one!" She was going to kill grandpa. "Have I missed too much in school?"
Ayumi shook her head. "But I did make copies of all of my notes for you!" She handed Kagome a small notebook. "The exam schedule is in there too, along with all of the assignments."
"What would I do without friends like you?" Kagome beamed.
"Probably flunk out," her friend joked, Kagome stuck her tongue out at her. "Remember that guy that gave you the apple pie at WacDonalds?"
She thought for a moment. She had so much on her mind she was surprised her head hadn't exploded yet. That was a lovely picture. Souta squeegeeing her head off of the bathroom tile. "Oh, Takeshi!"
"His friend Shin gave me his number to give to you. Takeshi is in the hospital." Ayumi handed the napkin to Kagome. "He was hoping you would go visit him."
"I'll give him a call."
Ayumi smiled. "Alright. See you at school?"
"Yep!" She stayed in the spot until Ayumi left. Making her way to the kitchen, she pulled out Shin's number. "Well, it's now or never!"
She picked up the phone and dialed. Then slammed the phone down. "I can't do this."
----------
Inuyasha bounded out of the well house, ignoring the smells and sounds that assaulted his hyper-sensitive senses. Three days had passed, Kagome hadn't come back, true to his word he was coming to get her. He didn't care it was the middle of the night; she was coming back and she was coming back NOW. Even if he had to drag her back kicking and screaming. Which would probably be the case.
One quick leap and he was in the tree outside of Kagome's room. The stupid girl was sound asleep in bed, snoring. He still couldn' t get over her resemblence to Kikyo, even her scent. Hell, his reincarnation probably smelled like him, but that was besides the point. Right now he had to grab the girl and carry her back so they could put the jewel back together; so he could finally become a full demon. People would finally respect and fear him!
Half breed trash no more.
Now he had to figure out how to wake her up without waking up the entire house.
She yawned and turned over. She was almost cute. "Gah!" He nearly fell out of the tree at his little revelation. Not another one! He had sworn he'd never trust anyone again! Especially another woman! Only bad things came from that.
He had to get out of there, now. At breakneck speed he darted back to the well and jumped in. He had some serious thinking to do.
