Prologue
A six year old little girl watched with tears streaming down her cheeks as a gang of boys abused the poor puppy.
“Stop it! You're hurting him” Kagome cried as she tried to save the puppy. The puppy let out a whimper as it was being kicked around.
“And what are you going to do about it?” Naraku, the leader of the crew, said.
“Just don't hurt it, what did it ever do to you?” Kagome asked as she attempted to get the puppy away from them. They simply shoved her away from it with ease.
“Don't kid yourself. Do you honestly think that you can save it?” Naraku laughed.
“STOP IT! YOU'RE HURTING HIM!” Kagome screamed even louder and they kicked it more and more. Naraku just smirked and kicked Kagome to the ground again.
“Ouch,” Kagome groaned as she attempted to get up despite the pain.
“Wow, you guys are really low, can't you pick on someone your own size?” said a voice from behind them. Everyone turned to face the voice. Kagome blushed when she saw who had said it. It was a boy about her age with silver hair that reached mid-back.
“What do you want? This puppy is ours” Naraku stated.
“Why would you abuse your own puppy?” The silver haired boy asked looking unconvinced.
“So maybe it isn't ours, but we can still do anything we want with it” Naraku replied with a smug look.
“How do you know that it doesn't belong to someone else?” The silver haired boy asked.
“Whatever, it's not like anyone actually cares about the stupid puppy anyways” Naraku barked back as he began to get irritated.
“Well, I'm not too sure that the puppy's mother would like you beating up on her pup” The silver haired boy said.
“Well, the puppy's mother isn't here, so I don't care!” Naraku yelled frustrated.
“Really? Because I see an angry dog coming towards us” The silver haired boy laughed as he pointed out the dog that was heading towards them.
“Guys, lets get out of here before it gets us” One of the kids in Naraku's gang yelled. They all scrambled to get away from where the dog was heading towards. Naraku gave both Kagome and the silver haired boy a dirty look before he ran after his friends. Kagome was too petrified by the dog that was headed towards her to move.
“Kyacchi, sit” The silver haired boy commanded and the approaching dog stopped in her tracks and sat down. “Don't worry, she won't hurt you, she just wants her puppy”
“Oh” Kagome replied dumbly. She wiped her face with her arms to rid herself of the tears and then she slowly stood up and walked over to the abused puppy. When she picked it up, she made sure that it wasn't hurt too badly and then carried it over to the bigger dog to tend to its offspring's wounds. The boy pulled something out of his pocket and placed it into her palm. Kagome opened her palm and inside was a metal ring with a pretty clear jewel on it.
“Thanks for protecting him until I got here” The boy thanked her. She could only blush as she stared into his golden eyes. He took the ring out of her palm and slipped it onto her thumb. It was still pretty loose on her tiny thumb.
“So, the puppy is yours?” She asked trying to recover from her shock.
“Yeah, he strayed away from his mother earlier, we've been looking for him all day” The boy explained.
“Thanks for saving me from the bullies” Kagome thanked shyly.
“No problem, I'd do anything for a cute girl like you” He replied with a wink. Kagome's face went crimson.
“So, does the puppy have a name?” Kagome asked trying to hide her embarrassment.
“Yeah, his name is Kyougen” The boy explained. “Do you have a name?”
“What kind of question is that? Of course I have a name” Kagome replied looking confused.
“Will you tell me what it is?” He asked because she obviously didn't understand what he had been trying to ask her before.
“It's…..” She started.
“There you are, I've been looking for you everywhere honey. Look, you got your dress covered in dirt” Kagome's mother, who was dressed in a light blue dress, said. “Let's go, we have to get you cleaned up for Eri's birthday party this afternoon”
With that Kagome's mother pulled Kagome into her arms and began to walk away. Kagome looked over her mother's shoulders at the boy who was staring at her as her mother took her away. The only thing that she had to remember the boy by was the ring that he had given her.
