Chapter 16
Shippou was shocked by all the colors, noises and smells of Kagome's time. Everything was more intense; he didn't know what to do first. Fortunately for him, his parents did. They took him straight to the main house, where Kagome's grandfather, mother and brother were making preparations for the final events at the festival.
“We're back!” Kagome called, entering the house. “There's someone very special I want you to meet.”
“Kagome you're grandfather wants to see you and Inuy…” Mrs. Higurashi stopped when she saw the young fox demon in her front entryway.
“Mom, this is Shippou, Inuyasha and I have kind of adopted him.”
“Hello, Shippou, Kagome and Inuyasha have told me so much about you.”
Shippou looked up at his adoptive mother and asked, “Is she my grandma?”
Kagome smiled and nodded. The kit looked back at his (Author's Note: He he he) grandmother, who opened her arms. He ran up to her and hugged her.
“Welcome to the family, Shippou Higurashi.” She said, holding her grandson close. “Your grandfather wanted to see you two. I'll introduce Souta to his nephew.”
After an hour of playing video games with his uncle, Shippou was called into his mother's room.
“You look really pretty, mom.” She was dressed in a green kimono that had been made for someone else. There was a yellow and pink apple blossom pattern printed on it.
“Thanks, do you think Inuyasha will like it?”
“Dad will love it. What did you need me for?”
“Your grandmother got these for you, she would have made something, but she was short on time.”
It was a bright orange yukata with a black flame pattern that went well with his red hair and fur.
“That's for me?”
“Yeah, come on and get changed. Inuyasha and I need to get to the stage for preparations. The couple that was going to perform got caught at the train station so now he and I are going to be in the final performance.”
“Wow, I can't wait to see it.”
“Then hurry up and get dressed, mom and Souta will be downstairs when you're ready.”
With that, she left the room. The performance was fantastic. Kagome and Inuyasha reenacted a story about a priestess and a half-demon that had been sealed to a tree by a sacred arrow. Shippou yawned, been there, lived that. But he watched it anyway. It was amazing how quickly he had meshed into his new family. They accepted him as Kagome's son without question or hesitation. They loved him as if he were her own and not a full-blooded demon. On the stage, his mother and father were kissing. Mother and father, it was strange to say that after five years of being an orphan. Everyone cheered; the festival and the story were over. Inuyasha spotted Shippou, swung his woman into his arms and leaped off he stage.
When he got to his son, he let Kagome down gently and picked up in a bear hug.
“Hey Shippou!” he said, excited. “How about we take your mom to watch the fireworks?”
“Yay!” The kit exclaimed.
Three hours found them nestled on a blanket under a tree. Shippou was in his mother's lap, who was in turn in his father's. Shippou was quickly falling asleep, contented. Kagome was snuggled against her lover's chest, almost dozing. Inuyasha was very happy. He had a woman who loved him for who he was and a boy who he had always cared for was his son. He had a family who loved him. When they were ready, he would make Kagome is mate.
Kagome looked up at his smiling face, “I love you, Inuyasha. I'm so happy.”
Inuyasha kissed his love deeply, “I love you too, Kagome.”
“I know, I've known since the start of the festival when you got defensive with Hojo and called me a goddess.”
“Then you knew before I did.”
“A woman would,” Kagome said, shifting Shippou in her lap slightly.
“He's not to heavy for you is he?”
“No, I kind of like having him here in my time. I don't miss him as much when I come home.”
“You really do love the little guy don't you?”
“Yeah, I don. I'm happy he's a part of my family now.”
“I'm glad I have a family now,” Inuyasha nuzzled Kagome's neck, “I can't believe I have a son now.”
“Well, Shippou does look up to you.”
Inuyasha hugged his woman close, “I love you both, but don't tell him I said that.”
Kagome giggled, “wouldn't want him to think you'd gone soft, huh?”
“Only with you, Kagome,” Inuyasha chuckled.
Kagome snuggled against her man. He was hers now and she couldn't be happier. After a while, Shippou nodded awake, yawned and looked at Kagome.
“Momma, can I go to bed now?”
`He called me momma,' “of course, Sweetie, it's getting late as it is.”
The trio stood and packed up the blanket and the remnants of their dinner. Inuyasha picked up his sleeping son and carried him back to the house with an arm around Kagome.
“I'm glad we're together now, all three of us.”
“So am I. Keh, who would have thought I'd end up calling Shippou my son?”
“He called me `momma,' how cute is that?”
“You've always mothered him and he's always looked up to me. I guess it's only natural that when we finally get together, he comes along for the ride.”
“I don't mind. My family loves him as much as they love you. You're both just part of the family.”
“I'd love to make it official,” he grinned.
“So would I, in time. But for now we'll let Miroku and Sango be the ones to get married. I want to keep you and Shippou to myself for a little while.”
“Yeah, you and Shippou are my family. That's all I need, for now.” He hugged her and his son, “just you and Shippou.”
“Let's go home, together.”
They were a family now and that made all of t hem very, very, very, happy.
