Chapter 6: Kagome's Fear

"What's the matter, Kagome?" Inuyasha returned to the river bank and asked.
"I just now saw something move in that bush," Kagome replied in a tone which suggested fear.
"I'll see Kagome," Inuyasha drew out Tetsusaiga and with one leap reached the thickets on the right bank of the river, where it turned to the right from its straight direction.
"Yes Inuyasha," Kagome shouted. "I saw the grass moving there."
"But nothing's here now," Inuyasha sheathed his sword and walked back to the place where Sango and Kagome were standing.
"But-"
"It's nothing Kagome," Inuyasha reassured her, "trust me."

But there definitely was something, Sango felt a presence there too. Even Inuyasha felt something awkward about the incident. Kagome never got afraid without a proper cause for it. But he chose not to give it further thought.

A few moments later the downpour began but the group was safe. Safe in the cave which Miroku and Sano had found. A crackling fire was made in the cave where all the fishes caught by Miroku were roasted and a hearty meal was prepared for the group.

Sango had forgotten about the incident in the river-bank. She had told Miroku after coming to the cave and he forgot about it as well. But Kagome didn't, she was still worried about it. She was still wondering as to who or what could have been in that bush. There was no one except them in the entire area. Although Kagome didn't let her fears show in her face, Inuyasha did understand that something wasn't right with her.

He understood that something was bothering her and he wanted to know what it was.

“Kagome, is something bothering you?” Inuyasha asked as he seated himself beside her.
“No Inuyasha," Kagome gave a negative nod. "it's nothing.”
“Something must be the matter. You are hiding something from me.” Inuyasha insisted on knowing.
"It's nothing Inuyasha," Kagome again lied and turned her face away from Inuyasha.

She didn't want to worry Inuyasha. She herself wasn't sure if the matter was serious or not. She didn't want anyone to get worried unnecessarily.

But Inuyasha wasn't going to let go so easily. He turned her towards him and looked into her eyes and asked her the same question again. Her eyes were showing him that she was worried and we won't let go without knowing it. Kagome knew that too and so she decided to say it.

“You see Inuyasha," Kagome began, "I really think there was something in that bush."

Kagome finally confided to Inuyasha the matter which was bothering her.

"But I checked out the place, didn't I?" Inuyasha said, "I am sure that there isn't anything." Inuyasha kept his hand on Kagome's and tried to console her,"I will go and see again if you want."

"No, don't go, Inuyasha," Kagome said, "It's raining outside."

Kagome was still worried and this made Inuyasha come to rash conclusions.

“I think” Inuyasha began, "none other than Miroku was in that bush."
“No, Inuyasha, Miroku won't do such a thing. It must be someone else,” Kagome looked outside the cave.

It was raining heavily with occasional flashes of thunder, lighting up the darkness of the forest. Another such a flash occurred and it had affected Kagome in a negative way.

"Inuyasha!"

Kagome got frightened after seeing something pass by the cave's entrance, and held Inuyasha tightly. She immersed her face into his chest as if trying to hide herself from something. Inuyasha had felt a strong presence too. But he didn't see what Kagome had seen. Those red eyes that she saw frightened her. She felt most secure in his arms than anything else and so, she clutched Inuyasha's clothes even tighter and remained in that way.

“I will go and see what's there outside” Inuyasha said as he began to get up.
“No, Inuyasha please don't go outside” Kagome, trembling with fear looked at Inuyasha's face and said.
“You are fine here Kagome, we all are here, don't be so afraid,” Inuyasha pulled Kagome to himself and let her head rest on his chest as an act of calming her.
“Thank you Inuyasha,” Kagome silently thanked him.
“I must check out that thing, whatever or whoever it is, I must check it out…” Inuyasha decided but didn't let anyone else know about it.

Everyone had gone to sleep after having dinner, Sano slept by resting his back on the inner wall of the cave while Miroku and Sango lay on the ground by the left wall. Kirara made itself comfortable near the central fire and Shippo slept opposite to it on the other side of the fire.

Kagome still could not sleep. Whenever she closed her eyes she saw those red eyes- crimson eyes to be precise. She couldn't for once close her eyes. Her eyelids were heavy with the burden of sleep but she couldn't shut them. She was too afraid to. Those dreadful crimson eyes forced her to open her eyes every time they closed, even if by mistake. With every passing moment she grew restless, she didn't want Inuyasha to know about her sorry state. Her heart wanted to tell him everything but she didn't want to worry him so she tried hard to get some sleep and after much effort she finally managed to.

Inuyasha wasn't asleep too. Not that he was afraid of anything, he was worried about Kagome. He had noticed how Kagome was shivering. Only fear could have caused that, there was no question of cold affecting her. The fire was making the cave enough warm for everyone to be comfortable.

“I must go out at once, there is something out there,” Inuyasha thought. He tried to sniff out something different from the other scents of the forest.

It was still raining heavily. Inuyasha could hear occasional howling of different creatures of the forest. They were the wolves. The thought of wolves changed his mind about going out. If he went out then the cave's entrance will be left unguarded and if the wolves managed to get into the cave, then the insiders would be in serious trouble. Such a sudden attack by those wolves would surely kill all of them. So Inuyasha dropped his plans of investigation.

He had another reason for not going out. He thought that if the same being that frightened Kagome came to the cave in his absence it would surely harm them. Thus, after weighing all his options Inuyasha decided to stay put in the cave.

He decided to get some rest. But he held is sword sheathed sword tightly even while sleeping. Who could tell when Tetsusaiga would be needed? After all, letting ones guard down is not a wise thing to do when in the forest. Even a rash half-demon like Inuyasha knew that.
