InuYasha's strength

Chapter 7
A New Beginning

Kagome had been there when Sango went into labor with Mai. But for some reason, this was different. She hadn't experienced the pain and from the way it was going, she didn't want to. She stopped at the window overlooking the city from the waiting room.

`I wish it hadn't been taken from me. I wouldn't be so. Afraid?' she questioned herself. Suddenly a pair of strong arms snaked around her waist and lovingly caressed her swollen belly. She felt him bury his head in the crook of her neck and inhale. She leaned her back on his shoulder.

“What's the matter Kags?”

“Hmmm?”

“What are you afraid of?” She turned to look at him. She met his gaze with a questioning look.

“How did you know that I was afraid?”

“I smell your fear and though it's not thick enough to where I'm concerned for your safety, it's enough to make me worry.”

“Mommy?” The two looked down at their son, who was trying to wiggle his way in between the two of them. Kagome smiled as InuYasha bent down and picked him up.

“What's the matter son?”

“Mommy smells scared.” Kagome's smile faded into a sad smile.

“Its ok honey.” Kagome said as she kissed his forehead.

“Mommy?”

“I was just thinking about when you were born. Mommy doesn't know what to expect when the baby comes. And it's kind of scary.”

InuYasha watched her face as she explained the reason behind her fear. Her face went from happy to sad with a slight crease in her forehead from the fear that she was trying to hide. When she looked at him, he knew what she saw. His face reflected the sadness and pain that Kagome's held. It was true. She hadn't been able to experience the birth of their son- that was something he would always blame himself for. He should've been there, with her-protecting her. He should've found out he was going to be a father from her instead of finding her in the near-death condition that he did. This child was going to be their first of many things. He was going to be there for her with this child and nothing and no one would be able to stop him. He was going to be with her no matter what.

“It's going to be ok, Kags.”

“I know.” She smiled. “I have you this time.”

InuYasha felt like he held the world in his arms at that moment. His son, his mate and unborn child were all in his arms. They were his world.

“I guess I should go check on Sango.” Kagome said turning to the room her friend was currently in. As they walked there, Miroku came out holding a crying Mai lovingly in his arms. Concerned, Kagome rushed to him.

“What happened?” She asked with a worried frown.

“Mai, Sango doesn't think she should be in there.”

“Too much for them both, huh?” InuYasha asked.

“Yeah, I guess.”

“I'm going to sit with Sango.” Kagome said as she disappeared into the room.

“I'll take care of her Miroku.” InuYasha said as he took Mai into his arms. “Go be with your wife.”

“Thanks InuYasha.”

“Oh and hey, Miroku?”

“Yeah?”

“Take care of Kags for me?”

“Why?”

“Well, this whole thing has kind of got her scared. She is afraid of what this experience will bring for her. I don't know why but she is afraid of what's happening in that room.”

“She was there when Mai was born.”

“Yeah, but at the time we didn't think she was going to be able to have kids again.”

Miroku nodded. “All right. I'll take care of your queen; you take good care of my princess.” Miroku kissed his daughters cheek lightly. “Don't worry, mama will be ok.”

The little girl only nodded and buried her head in InuYasha's shoulder and sighed. InuYasha watched Miroku go back into Sango's room. He then looked down at Keitaro who also was watching Miroku leave.

“Come on son.” Keitaro looked up at him. “Let's show Mai the garden in the back ok?”

InuYasha sat on a bench watching Keitaro and Mai feed the swans and the ducks in the pond the rest of their sandwich that he had bought for them. Keitaro and Mai, the two children that had stolen his heart. `They'd make a cute couple.' He thought with a smirk. Much to his surprise, he watched as Mai sat down and started to cry. He was about to get up when Keitaro stopped what he was doing and walked over to Mai.

`Hmmm.' InuYasha thought. `I wonder.' He watched as Keitaro sat next to Mai and watched as she cried.

“Come on Mai.” He begged in an annoyed tone. “Don't cry.”

`Hmmm.'

“Why not?”

“I hate to see you cry. Or any girl for that matter.” He said as he wiped her tears away with a napkin he had in his pocket. InuYasha smiled.

`He gets that from me.'

“But my mom. What's going to happen to her?”

“I dunno.” Keitaro answered truthfully. “I guess she's going to get that baby out of her tummy now.”

“Yeah, but she was hurting. Bad.”

`They don't understand.'

“My mom said that there would be a lot of pain, but only for a little while.”

“Yes but, it's my mom! I don't know what to do! I can't help her!”

“That's what daddy's are for.” Keitaro said matter-of-factly.

`You have so much faith Keitaro Toshi. You get that from your momma.' InuYasha beamed.

“But daddy was just as afraid as mommy.” Keitaro sighed as he wrapped his arm around the still sobbing girl and laid his head on her head.

“It'll be ok Mai.”

“How do you know?”

“Well, uh. Your mommy was ok after she had you right? My mommy was ok after she had me too, so things have to turn out ok.”

“Yeah, maybe you're right.”

`Good job Keitaro. You may get your faith from your momma, but you are my son as well.' Again InuYasha beamed. He glanced at his watch and decided it was time to go check on Sango and to make sure Kagome was all right.

“Come on you two! Let's go see if the baby is here yet!” He called as he stood.

“Coming!” The two called in unison excitedly.

InuYasha smiled as he turned back towards the hospital. Then, a shiver ran up his spine and he whirled around to find what had caused this feeling. He sniffed the air for anything that could mean danger. Naraku was still on the loose after all, he was a threat to him, his family and his friends. He was pulled from his thoughts as Keitaro and Mai grabbed either hand. He looked down at his son, who stared at the forest line.

“Keitaro?”

“It feels like….”

“Like we're being watched.” Mai finished. InuYasha looked down at the girl was she hugged his wrist in a fearful manner. He grabbed both their hands and led them both into the hospital. Looking back one last time, he could have sworn he saw something reflecting just within the trees. Squeezing the little hands that held on to him dearly, he walked into the hospital.

`He's close by.' He thought. `I need to fine Kagome. I need to be with her.'

Kagome sat outside Sango's room. She had felt fain as Sango's son had been born.

*****Flashback*****

Come on Sango, one more push!” The doctor called to her. Miroku stood by her side with a pained look as she squeezed his hand during her push.

Kagome just sat there; unable to believe the pain her friend was experiencing.

`I guess that's child birth.' She thought as the baby finally emerged fully. Sango had an epidural, but it didn't look like it had helped much.

`And people say NATURAL is the best way to give birth.' She thought with a smirk.

`Feh.'

She watched as they cleaned the baby and handed him to Sango.

“Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Houshi. It's a boy!”

“A boy.” Sango whispered as she held him.

“Yes love, a boy.” Miroku said. “I guess you win this one.”

Sango smiled.

“You know it monk.”

“Yes, but the naming belongs to me.”

“Taro? I guess there's no disagreeing on that one.” Sango said smiling.

Kagome felt woozy as Miroku took the baby from Sango's arms and held him.

`InuYasha.'

“Kagome? Are you ok?”

*****End of Flashback*****

The baby had come so quickly, the doctors weren't sure if they should give Sango the epidural, but they did. Kagome was grateful. She congratulated the two before leaving the room.

“Taro.” Kagome whispered. “First born son.”

“Kags?” The one person she need at that moment came into the waiting room. Ushering the children off in the direction of the play area, he walked over to a pale Kagome. When he received no response, he became worried.

“Kags? Baby? Are you ok?” InuYasha took her into his arms as he sat next to her.

“I almost fainted as Taro was born.”

“Taro? I told Miroku not to make that bet.” Kagome giggled.

“Yeah, he gets to change all the diapers for the next few months.”

“Kags, are you ok? Do you want to go home?”

“We need to take care of Mai for a while. Sango is exhausted, so we'll have her for the night.”

“That's ok with me. As long as everybody is ok, I'm happy.”

Kagome smiled.

“I know. I'm tired. Let's have Mai meet her little brother and then we can go home.

“Ok, I'll be back.”

Kagome rested her hands on her belly as InuYasha left her. She felt alone and unprotected. She watched as InuYasha bent down to Mai and whispered something in her ear. The little girls face lit up as he rose up and nodded. Kagome smiled as Mai followed InuYasha to Sango's room. Her attention turned to Keitaro as he came towards her.

“Momma?”

“Yes sweetie?”

“I love you momma. I don't know what having the baby will be like. But daddy will protect you. I know he will so you don't have to be scared ok?” Kagome smiled tearfully and nodded. She then pulled the little boy into her chest and gave him a hug.

“I love you Keitaro Toshi Taisho.”

“I love you to mom.”

From the rooftop of the adjacent building he watched through the waiting room window as Kagome held her child.

`Soon Kagome.' He thought with an evil grin. `I will have you and you will have no one but me.'
