Chapter 8

Fear and Terror

 

Later that night, Kagome sat on the back porch listening to the sounds of the night that echoed throughout the forest surrounding her home while staring at the stars. She loved this place. InuYasha had bought it shortly after she had been released from the hospital- about two days after the blood transfusion. He had bought the property because it had a sentimental value to him. She could understand that, it was where they had gone on their first official date. The place they had shared their first kiss, and where they had confessed their love for the first time.

 

Kagome's eyes began to drift close as the smell of the night air changed.

 

“Smells like rain.” She said to no one.

 

She listened as InuYasha came down the stairs after tucking Keitaro and Mai in for the night. She made no move or sound as he stepped out onto the porch and took a deep breath of the evening air.

 

“You all right Kags?”

 

Kagome opened her eyes and smiled at her mate.

 

“I'm fine InuYasha.”

 

“Kags, about earlier, I don't want you to be afraid to have this baby. I'm here this time. Had I known, I would have dropped everything to be with you last time. I knew how your dad was and I knew what he was capable. What I didn't know was Naraku was behind it all.”

 

“For one, it took the news of the birth of your son and death of your ex-mate to make you realize your `mistake', two my dad had been controlled by Naraku ever since mom left. Three, your `mistake' turned into your greatest accomplishment. Not only did you save my life and the life of your son, you managed to begin anew and help those caught in the crossfire of everything start over too. That in itself is a feat not many can accomplish.”

 

“I still betrayed you. I broke my vow to be with you always no matter what.”

 

“InuYasha, why are you even thinking about this now?” Kagome asked as she sat down next to him.

 

“Keitaro, I wasn't there when he was- well, while you were pregnant with him. I just want you to know that I will be here no matter what with this one. Ok?”

 

“One.” She said as she kissed his cheek lightly as he wrapped her in his arms. “You only cracked your vow, as you came back. Two, your with me now, so the past can't really matter. Three, I have no doubt in you whatsoever InuYasha. If I did, life would not be as it is now.”

 

“I love you Kags.”

 

“I love you too InuYasha.”

 

The two sat in silence, content to be in one another's arms. InuYasha suddenly thought of Sesshomaru and the conversation they had earlier.

 

“Kags, I need to go out of town on business.”

 

“What? When?”

 

“We leave Friday; I think is what he said.”

 

“Friday? Who?”

 

“Sesshomaru? Where? Why?”

 

“Yes, Kyoto and we are taking over Naraku's business- his last stand against the Taisho family.

 

“InuYasha-.”

 

“I know Kags, I know. But it's a chance to end his funding should he ever be freed.”\

 

“Is that a possibility at this point though?”

 

“Anything's possible when you have friends in high places.”

 

“Is that how he escaped?”

 

“No.”

 

“…”

 

“…”

 

“InuYasha, there's something you aren't telling me isn't there?”

 

“About what?”

 

“Baka. Naraku.”

“There are something's that you need to know and something's you don't Kags.”

 

“Like the fact that he's been watching us?”

 

“WHAT?”

 

“Shhh. Calm down. I just wanted to see what your reaction would be.”

 

“Feh.” `I sure he is. Watching us from a distance or up close it doesn't matter he is still out there.' InuYasha thought warily.

 

“InuYasha, I need to know about what's going on so that I can be ready for anything. Like your out-of-the-blue trip to Kyoto. What if something happens then?”

 

“You'll be with Sango and Miroku. Sango has asked as much hasn't she? She needs help with the baby while Miroku is away right?”

 

“InuYasha. You can't just leave me with a sitter. A sitter with two children of their own that they would have to protect. I don't want to put them in any danger.”

 

“Yeah, I know.”

 

“But?”

 

“The only one other than your mother is Sesshomaru Kags. Kagura could protect you, but she is kind of sidetracked with the wedding and everything. I don't know that I could focus knowing that you were being taken care of by some one who isn't paying attention.”

 

“InuYasha, I don't need to be in constant care!”

 

“Kagome, that baby can come at anytime. You know that. With Naraku out, it only makes me-.”

 

“What? Makes you what InuYasha?”

 

“Kags, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't want to loose you. I won't loose you. I sure as hell am not going to loose Keitaro and the baby.”

 

Kagome was silent. InuYasha had never sounded so- scared, so frightened. `The threat is more than real. He isn't telling me everything. Why?'

 

“What aren't you telling me?”

 

“Naraku is dangerous. You've known that since the first day you met him.”

 

Kagome shuddered.

 

“For now Kags, let's just drop it. I will protect you with my life. I will protect my mate and my family with my life. IF I should die then it would be up to you to raise my pups until they are old enough to be on their own.”

 

“InuYasha, you said that as your mate I'd be able to follow you in death. That is why I purified my blood before-. Well, I didn't want you to die with your responsibilities-. Oh.”

 

“See Kags? I'm not afraid to loose you. I'm terrified. I couldn't see myself raising our children alone.”

 

“InuYasha?”

 

“Naraku is after you Kags. He's after your body and what it protects. You have yet to give up that thing you know.”

 

“The Shikon no Tama?”

 

“Yes. The longer you have it, the more danger you put yourself in.”

 

“I don't understand. I was never in danger when I was young. Why am I now?”

 

“When you became my mate, we shared our blood in the marriage ritual of the youkai. Thus, you became tainted. The jewel reacts to the presence of a demon, whether it is half or not.”

 

“What do I do?”

 

“I don't know. We need to do something soon though.”

 

“Kikyo.” Kagome whispered.

 

“What?”

 

“Kikyo is a priestess right? She might know a way to purify the jewel!”

 

A small but strong voice went through the house at that moment, causing the couple to jump.

 

“MOM! DAD? WHERE ARE YOU?”

 

“Did they leave us here?” A smaller voice asked fearfully.

 

“No, we didn't we are right here.” Kagome said as she came in, followed closely by InuYasha. “What happened?”
