Chapter 12

Wrongfully Accused

 

“I'm just saying that isn't enough InuYasha.” The old detective said tiredly. “So you were at home? With who? Can anyone vouch for you?”

 

“Look Myoga, I'm sick of going over this with you. I was at home Kagome and Keitaro. Kagome had just been released from the hospital after having a serious case of Braxton-Hicks. Besides, you know me! You've known me since I was a kid! You know I wouldn't do that shit!”

 

“InuYasha, I would advise you not to repeat that. I right now am your only hope until the physical evidence comes back and my history with you other than Kagome's case is considered a conflict of interest. That is why I called you down here, because right now this girl has given us everything we need to arrest you. A detailed description and your name. And until the evidence is complete, you are our only suspect.”

 

“Myoga, if I would do something like this- not to say I would the whole thing disgusts me, but if I would've I sure as hell wouldn't have let her or anyone else see me much less give her my name.”

 

“This is the reason why I am hesitant about taking you into custody.”

 

“YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!” InuYasha said as he jumped out of his seat.

 

“I can and am. Sit down.”

 

InuYasha ran his fingers through his thick white hair then set his hands on his hips and glared at the old detective.

 

“What do I have to do to get me out of here?”

 

“Tell me who I can have verify you were home that night.”

 

“My wife and son.”

“They can verify your presence for the hour of 12:30am last Sunday night?”

 

“Keitaro can, I think Kags was asleep.”

 

“Keitaro? The baby right?”

 

InuYasha nodded.

 

“I'm afraid the words of a child will be useless in your defense in this case InuYasha.”

 

“WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO THEN?” InuYasha roared. “My son is the only one who was awake at the time, Kagome was sick in bed so other than Keitaro-.”

 

“There is no one else.”

 

“Have you stopped to think that maybe I'm being set up here?”

 

“I have considered it.”

 

“So why aren't you looking into that instead of questioning me?”

 

“InuYasha, I brought you down here today not only for your statement, but for identification purposes also.”

 

“What?”

 

“I want you to participate in a line and a polygraph test.” InuYasha said as he sat down.

 

“You don't believe me do you?” The old detective leaned in and spoke quietly.

 

“InuYasha, the odds at this moment are against you. The more we have in your defense, the less the case. If this girl identifies you as the culprit, you will be arrested on the spot. In my own opinion, I think this is what Naraku has done.” A look of realization crossed the hanyou's features.

 

“And he is just waiting for me to get nailed for it and then he'll-.”

 

“Attack. Yes.”

 

“Shit.”

 

“Indeed.”

 

“What do I do to get my name cleared?”

 

“Other than the polygraph test, we can only wait for the evidence and pray the girl doesn't point to you in the line up.”

 

“Why the fuck didn't you tell me that this would be a line up too? You were withholding information.”

 

“If I had told you it was going to be a line up would you have come?”

 

“No.” InuYasha answered quickly.

 

“Thus my reason for withholding the information. If you hadn't come today, then I would've had no choice but to put out an arrest warrant and come to your house. With Kagome in her condition, I highly doubted that you would've wanted that.”

 

“Kagome had the baby yesterday. She just came home this morning.”

 

“I'm sorry. Congratulations. What was it?”

 

“A girl.”

 

“You must be proud. Whom does she resemble?”

 

“Her mother, but she has my eyes.”

 

“Was there a need for a concealment charm?”

 

“No. Not yet anyway.”

 

“Well. All the better. She was born when? Yesterday?”

 

“At dawn.”

 

“Ah. That would explain why she resembles her mother. She was born as the night of the new moon ended. You may need a concealment charm later but for now I think you're safe.”

 

“Can we get back to the matter a hand? I'd like to get back to them as soon as I can.”

 

“Indeed. Are you prepared to take the test?”

 

“Yes.”

 

“I'm going to call Sesshomaru and ask him to come down. That way, you can have him prepare Kagome in whatever way you need.”

 

“Sesshomaru. Yeah, he'll be able to protect her while I'm here.”

“So relationship has changed since the time of your father's death?”

 

“Somewhat, he relies on me for the contracts and protection of our father's company as I rely on him for keeping me in the loop.”

 

“So does that work out?”

 

“No. I do my part; I have yet to see him do his.”

 

“Well, he maybe able to help you as far as protecting Kagome while you are here. I'm sure it won't be for long. I know you InuYasha and you are innocent. That is why I'm trying to gather the evidence for you instead of against you.”

 

“I understand Myoga. Thanks.”

From outside the police station a dark figure watches as InuYasha enters. He waits among the shadows for the words he'd waiting there for all day-hell for the past five years. He watches the doors for his informant as the sun sets. Just as the last of the city light flicker on, a tall figure emerges from the building and heads for the alley that he is concealed in.

 

“Have you new for me Jaromaru?”

 

“Yes. InuYasha was positively identified as the rapist. He's been place under arrest until the evidence comes back.”

 

“Evidence?”

 

“The rape kit that was done on the girl. We are waiting for the DNA samples to come back.”

 

Naraku slapped himself mentally. He had forgotten about that part.

 

“Jaromaru, make sure the evidence is handled.”

 

“Yes. Is there anything else?”

 

“Assemble a team. Depending on how his family is protected we will attack tonight or tomorrow night.”

 

“As you wish.”

Kagome hadn't slept. She couldn't. InuYasha had yet to come home and the phone call earlier from that day had her rattled. Her mother slept soundly in the next room with her daughter and son, trying to keep them quiet so that she could sleep. Kagome felt sorry for her mother knowing that, but she couldn't help it. InuYasha was still gone, he hadn't called or anything. Had something happened? Did it have to do with the phone call? Who was it? The phone scared her out of her wits as she shot up quickly. Ignoring the pain that welled up in her still swollen belly, she answered.

 

“Hello?”

 

“Kagome?”

 

“InuYasha! What's going on? What's wrong?”

 

“Kags. Listen, I'm sending Sesshomaru over to the house. Something's come up and-“

 

“What?” Kagome cried. “What came up InuYasha? What aren't you telling me?”

 

“Kagome stop it.”

 

Kagome began to cry.

 

“Kags, baby stop. Don't cry. I hate it when you cry. Listen. Sesshomaru will tell you later but for now I have to go. I want you to promise me something ok?”

 

“What InuYasha?”

 

“Naraku has something to do with this; I want you to be careful. Sesshomaru will be there soon; until he calls you to let you know he's there don't open the door, all right?”

 

“Ok. InuYasha?”

 

“Yeah Kags?”

 

“Are you all right?”

 

“I am now. I got to talk to you.”

 

“Baka.”

 

“Kags, I want you to rest honey. Ok? You need to rest.”

 

“I will. InuYasha?”

 

“What?”

 

“I love you InuYasha. No matter what ok?”

 

The other end was silent for a moment before InuYasha spoke again. His voice filled with emotion.

 

“I love you too Kags. I got to go. Give Keitaro and Mieko my love all right? I love you Kags.”

 

“We love you too InuYasha.”

 

Kagome waited for him to hang up. Once the line went dead she turned off the phone and looked at it and then began to sob. It didn't scare her like the first time it rang, but when the phone went off she jumped. She quickly answered it.

 

“Hello?”

 

“Kagome.”

 

“Sesshomaru?”

 

“Yes, Kagura and I are outside the front door. We need to speak to you.”

 

Kagome got up and looked out her window. Seeing Sesshomaru's car in the drive, she quickly hung the phone. It took her a while to get to the door as her body was stiff and was refusing to walk as it had just accomplished a feat that was new. She opened the door and was met by Sesshomaru's amber gaze. At that moment she felt lost.

 

She needed InuYasha.

 

Sesshomaru said nothing as the girl before him sank to her knees and cried. Kagura stepped forward, ushering him in.

 

“Sesshomaru, take her back upstairs. We can explain this in the morning.”

 

“No.” Kagome said in between sobs. “I need to know what is going on.”

 

“Fine.” Sesshomaru said as he scooped the young mother into his arms. “First, you will rest. I will tell you when you are ready.”

 

“I am ready now. Tell me.”

 

“Take her to her room. We don't want to wake the children.”

 

Sesshomaru nodded and took Kagome upstairs. Once he laid her on the bed, Sesshomaru walked over and closed the door. Kagome was uncomfortable, but she wanted to know.

 

“What's going on?”

 

“A number of things.”

 

“Fine, start with thing number one.”

 

“Very well.” Sesshomaru cleared his throat and began. “Last Sunday, a young girl was raped outside the temple where Kikyo resides.”

 

“Oh my goodness!” Kagome said worriedly forgetting about her woes for a minute thinking of the poor girl. “Did she survive?”

 

“Yes. When she woke, she gave vivid detail of her attack and attacker.”

 

“Well that's good. I hope they get the bastard.”

 

“They did.”

 

“What's his name?”

 

“Kagome. Do you not wonder why InuYasha isn't here?”

 

“Yes, you-are suppo-… No. NO!” Kagome suddenly screamed holding her head in her hands realizing the implications of his words.

 

“Kagome, the girl gave a vivid and detailed account of InuYasha as her attacker. She even gave his name.”

 

“But he wouldn't do that!” Kagome said tearfully. “He hates people like that! He saved me so many times from people like that! You know that Sesshomaru!”

 

“I know that. InuYasha went in for a polygraph test and DNA sample. They are waiting for the evidence to come back. Until then, he has been placed under arrest and will remain there until the evidence comes in.”

 

“It's been a week though! The evidence should be in!” Kagome cried even harder. InuYasha was not capable of doing something so terrible. Only heartless monsters could do something so horrible, and InuYasha was not a monster despite his own claims.

 

“What can we do Sesshomaru?”

 

“Nothing can be done except wait for the evidence. Until then, you have been placed under my protection by InuYasha. You will come to my house when the sunrises and will remain there until InuYasha is released.”

 

“Sesshomaru, why? What is going on?”

 

“If only I had an answer for you Kagome. I'll be downstairs should you require anything.”

 

Kagome said nothing as he left her room. What could she say? Her mate was being accused of an atrocity that was far beyond him to even think of. He had rescued her so many times when they were younger from such a fate, there was no way he was capable of doing something so disgusting.

 

Kagome's thoughts were interrupted by the phone.

 

“Hello?” She answered in a weak voice.

 

“Kags? Are you ok?” InuYasha asked worriedly.

 

“Yes.”

 

“Aw. I knew it was a bad idea to tell you.”

 

“No InuYasha it was a bad idea NOT to tell me.”

 

“I'm trying to protect you Kagome.”

 

“BY NOT TELLING ME?”

 

“YES!”

 

“NO! Now I've lost you again! ALL BECAUSE YOU'RE TRYING TO PROTECT ME!” She cried.

 

“Kags.”

 

“InuYasha, I need you. I need you here with me.”

 

“I'm coming Kags. I'll be out of here just as soon as the evidence gets here.”

 

“I'm sorry InuYasha. I'm so sorry.”

 

“Kags, baby it's not your fault.”

 

“It is.”

 

“No it's not Kags. I have to go. I love you. Stay with Sesshomaru ok? He'll protect you until I can.”

 

“Ok. I love you InuYasha. Come home soon.”

“Before you know it Kags. I love you.”

 

With that, the line went dead and Kagome's heart sank deep in her chest. She felt like she had the day he told her that he was marrying Kikyo. Instead of it being his mistake, this time it was the girls fault.

 

Once again, the phone rang. Interrupting Kagome's thoughts.

 

“Hello?”

 

“Hello Kagome.”

 

Kagome's heart stopped as fear began to grip her.

 

“What do you want?”

 

“I know where InuYasha is. I also know that it will be a long time before you see him again.”

 

“You're wrong.”

 

“I'm afraid not Kagome.”

 

“So sure of yourself you cocky bastard.”

 

“Now, now I think InuYasha's potty mouth as rubbed off on you.”

 

“What do you want?”

 

“Just to say I've been waiting for this day to come for the last five years. Soon Kagome, you will be mine.”

 

With that, the line went dead again and Kagome's heart seemed to clench in her chest as she realized what his words meant.

 

Naraku. He had set up InuYasha for the rape, just as he had her father for the murder of Kagome and Keitaro.

 

Kagome suddenly felt alone and unprotected. She panicked and screamed.

 

“SESSHOMARU!”
