Please don't kill me. This is a little late in coming out. I'm terribly busy and have taken up a new project. . .called a huge musical reading theatre thing in which I have to learn twelve pieces...I'm scared.

But Enjoy!

"Kagome-chan hasn't moved all morning," Sango remarked softly to Miroku. She had been keeping a careful eye on her friend. It had been three days since Kagome returned from her capture. The first day, she had been holed up in Kouga's personal den, talking about things the tiayjin could only guess at. The second day she had been forced to bathe and change her clothes.

Now she was just sitting, facing the front of the cave, waiting for Inuyasha's return.

"Kagome-sama is troubled. We should leave her to her meditation."

Sango gave the corrupt priest a harsh look. "She isn't meditating, she depressing."

Miroku rolled his eyes. "No, that would be Inuyasha. He's probably up in some tree, brooding," he commented dryly. He leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes. "It is a good thing that Shippou isn't with us."

Sango blinked. "Huh? What does Shippou have to do with any of this."

"Kagome and Inuyasha are his parents now. He would not understand why they are acting like this."

"Or," remarked a new voice. "He would understand perfectly." Kouga stood in front of them. He too was watching Kagome, but seemed a little wary of her. "Kitsune youkai have similar mating traditions. His parents probably explained it all to him."

Sango glared at the wolf youkai. "Shippou is just a child!"

"He's a fox," Kouga rolled his eyes. "They are worse than rabbits." He looked back over at Kagome's still form. He looked about to say something else when he jerked his attention to the mouth of the den.

Kagome slowly stood, her focus there as well. "Inuyasha's back," she said. Kouga looked at her and for a moment looked rigid and stiff. He moved away from Sango and Miroku to stand behind Kagome.

"Remember what I told you," he said in a low tone. It was for her only. "This is when you establish yourself-"

"As a bitch." Kagome looked back at him briefly. She drew in a deep breath and unclenched her hands.

"You need to relax," Kouga grunted softly. He placed his claws over her fists and made them hang loosely at her sides. He leaned down and bit the side of her neck. "He'll know if you're not comfortable and it will confuse him. It will also make you lose standing. Inuyasha will not respect you if you are too submissive."

Kagome closed her eyes but nodded. She recalled what had happened before. The youkai form of Inuyasha had wanted her to not argue with him, but Kouga said it was unhealthy to be completely submissive.

"No time like the present," she muttered to herself. She took a deep breath and opened her eyes. She shook Kouga's hands away from hers and stood firm. Inuyasha walked into the cave.

He didn't look at her. It was as if he didn't see her, as if she didn't exist. Instead he walked over to Sango and Miroku.

"Always knew he was an idiot," Kouga said dryly. "Let's see what I can do to piss him off." The wolf prince grinned and looked mischievous. "This is going to be fun."

"Inuyasha, aren't you forgetting someone?" Miroku asked after several minutes of discussing their travel plans.

He shook his head. "Forgetting implies accident," he said simply. "This is on purpose."

"May I ask why?"

"No."

"Ah. Well then, perhaps I'll ask Kagome-sama why she is allowing Kouga to touch her in such a manner."

Inuyasha glared. "You're trying to bait me, Miroku. It won't work."

"No he's not," Sango said. Her gaze went past Inuyasha as well. "No, he's definitely not lying. In fact, he may be understating it."

Inuyasha grumbled something under his breath and turned to look over his shoulder. Kouga was still standing behind Kagome. His hands were on her hips, stroking the skin along her sides and belly under her shirt.

The wolf tilted his head and then closed the distance between Kagome and him completely. His front completely touched her back. Inuyasha growled. Their conversation became incomprehensible to the humans. To them, Inuyasha and Kouga were barking and growling at each other.

"Get away from her."

"Give me one reason why I should? You ignored your mate, Inu-kuro. I have the right to take her."

"I know you can feel my Mark," Inuyasha snapped. "I've claimed her. She accepted it."

Kouga snorted. "If she truly accepted it, then why did she spend the night in my bed?" He looked down at the young girl. Kagome hadn't moved since the beginning of the conversation. "I know you can smell it."

"You wouldn't dare touch her."

The wolf youkai shrugged and pulled Kagome's hair away from her neck. He placed a kiss against her skin, his blue eyes never leaving Inuyasha's. He smirked.

"If I offered myself to her, she wouldn't refuse me."

"Yes she would."

"How can you be so sure?" Kouga began to pull away from Kagome to stand in front of her. His eyes narrowed and for the first time since Inuyasha's arrival, showed anger. "You did something wrong, Inu-kuro. You raped her. Then again, what more can you expect from an inuhanyou?"

He didn't see the streak of red and silver. Inuyasha retaliated.

"Inuyasha, NO!" Kagome shouted the instant she realized what might happen. She had no idea what was said. She didn't care. Words didn't matter if they killed each other.

Inuyasha stopped at the sound of her voice. He held Kouga to the ground by the neck with one claw, the other poised to rip out his throat. His amber eyes didn't leave his opponent. Kagome ran over to them and fell to her knees beside the two men.

"No. You can't do this. Whatever he said isn't important. It was just a game, Inuyasha. Just a game." She was breathless and the words stumbled out of her mouth. She was trying to say too much too quickly. "He was trying to get you to notice me. That's all it was. Stop this, please."

"You're protecting him."

"He's my friend, Inuyasha. Just a friend." She wrapped her hands around Inuyasha's wrist. She didn't try to pull it away from such a deadly position. Instead she tried to get him to look at her.

"You smell like him. You slept in his bed. With him."

"All we did was sleep," she said quietly. "Inuyasha, I promise you, nothing happened. Now let him go."

"I want him dead, Kagome. I want it more than anything else right now."

"Inuyasha, please. I'll do anything. Please just don't hurt him anymore. He's your friend too."

Silence.

"He is not my friend."

Kouga snorted. "Kogome is a true bitch, even if she sees something that isn't there." He growled something else under his breath. "You don't deserve her."

"Neither do you," Inuyasha snapped. Slowly he released Kouga. The wolf bolted from him the instant he was free. He didn't attack; that would only hurt Kagome. "You will not touch her again."

"Inuyasha..." Kagome murmured and lightly touched the back of his hand. "Please. He really is your friend."

The hanyou turned away from both of them. "We're leaving in a hour. Be ready."

"KAGOME!"

"Shippou-chan!"

A small ball of fur hurled himself into Kagome's waiting arms. The shard hunt had ended with nothing to show for it. It had been Sango who suggested that they go back to the village. The tension and growing distance between Inuyasha and Kagome had started to affect them all.

"You're back!" Shippou buried himself deep into Kagome's arms. He hated it when they left him behind. He was always worried that they wouldn't return, that they would die like his papa and mama.

Kagome laughed and hugged him. "We're back. Although, I'm going home." Shippou pouted and then glared at Inuyasha.

"You messed something up again, didn't you?" he demanded. Inuyasha looked at the kitsune child and raised an eyebrow.

"You have a nose, Shippou. Learn to use it."

Shippou narrowed his eyes and was going to argue when he took a big sniff of Kagome. He blinked and began to look adorably confused. "Kagome?"

"Inuyasha and I are partially mated now." The young girl gave him a little smile. "It happened while we were gone."

"Then why are you leaving? Is Inuyasha going with you? Are you going to sleep together now?" Shippou looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes.

Kagome swallowed painfully. "No. Inuyasha is going to stay here. I'm leaving when the sun sets."

"But why?" Shippou wailed. "You just got back!" Kagome cradled him and kissed his forehead as he cried. It took until nightfall to get him to calm down and sleep.

Kagome covered him with a blanket. She offered an apologetic smile to Sango and Miroku before standing to go to the dry well. Inuyasha stood as well.

"I'll walk with you."

Kagome just nodded and he followed her. They were almost to the well before she spoke.

"I'm not coming back."

Inuyasha halted. Before she could take another step away from him, he caught her wrist. He looked ready to protest but she stopped him with a finger to his lips.

"When you are ready, when you've come to terms with all of this, come get me. We can't be around each other if we're not together. We proved that last week." She leaned up and kissed his cheek.

"Kagome-" She shook her head to cut him off.

"Don't say anything. It's better this way. At least for now." She started to pull away from him, but he held firm on her wrist. His ears had drooped and he looked pained to see her go.

"Mates kiss goodbye." His mumble was almost inaudible to her.

"What?"

"Mates. They kiss goodbye."
