Chapter Eight:
Sango hung the last of the streamers, then stepped back to admire her handy work. It had taken her and Kagome nearly and hour to decorate but Sango had finally finished. Kouga had arrived nearly five minutes ago to pick up Kagome to take her home to change. As usual, Inuyasha was planning to arrive fashionably late, leaving only Miroku and herself in the building.
A week before the party Sango and Kagome had gone out in her jeep littering the surrounding area with flyers and it looked like it would be a good turnout. Per Miroku’s suggestion they were charging a cover at the door to cover their alcohol and food cost. Sango had been given the assignment of watching the door; Kagome would be watching the keg. They had all had a good laugh that the only one not legally allowed to drink would be checking IDs to make sure they didn’t have any underage party guest trying to get booze.
Sango looked around; the desks had been pushed up against the wall and the computers that normally sat on the desks were facing the center of room with speakers attached to them. This is where Miroku would be controlling the music. Kagome’s desk was near the door as always with a small gray cash box sitting on it. That was where Sango would be stationed all night, taking money and watching for unruly guests. She was not sure how a fun party had turned into work. She sighed, ‘well I should go get changed,’ she thought as she walked toward the break room and the bathroom adjacent to it. As she reached for the handle to the bathroom it jiggled, then Miroku exited wearing the costume she had bought for him. The purple fabric was draped across his shoulder like a tunic and the long black sleeves hung around his wrist. He had one purple glove on his right hand wrapped in rosary beads which was also holding a gold staff with a circle and linked rings around it.
“You wore it?” she said in disbelief.
“You bought it for me didn’t you?” he said casually.
“But I never thought you’d wear it, or buy accessory for it,” she said eyeing the staff.
“Take this as my form of penance for the other night,” he grinned.
“I still don’t forgive you,” she said harshly.
“I’m not asking you to,” he said quietly regarding her as she looked away. She could not look him in the eyes so he took her face in his hand and turned her to look at him, “Every word I said that night, I meant Sango.”
“I…I have to go,” she said brushing past him into the bathroom. She felt the tears sting her eyes and she wanted so badly for him to take her in his arms and kiss her like he had that night. But no matter what his pretty words were she could not let her guard down again, and he could not be trusted. This was probably just another trick to get her into bed. She changed into her costume and emerged shortly after; newly composed. When she entered the office, Miroku was going through CD’s for the party his mouth nearly dropped to the floor at the sight of her. She watched as his eyes traveled up and down her skin tight costume. She gave him a death glare and he went back to his CD’s but she had to admit to herself it did feel good to know he thought she was attractive. She checked the clock on the wall it was six o’clock.
“Time to let them in,” she announced to Miroku, he started up the music then disappeared into the break room to ‘mind’ the keg until Kagome arrived. Sango let the flood of people in checking IDs and handing out wristbands to people who wanted to drink. People filled in the office quickly. Some were in their street clothes and some in costumes; all of them standing around chatting with glasses in there hands already. ‘These people make quick work,’ she thought watching a group of giggling girls flirt with Miroku who had reappeared from the break room. Sango caught his eye over the crowd, and he turned pale then headed back over to the D.J station to change over the play list. ‘Why do I care if he flirts with girls? He is just my friend,’ she thought ‘but you want him to be more than that,’ a voice in her head reminded.
“Shut up,” she said aloud, a group of people nearby stared at her like she was crazy and Sango felt a small blush rise to her cheeks. She regained her composure and the group went back to their conversation.
A few minutes later Kagome arrived with Kouga in tow. She was wearing the costume they had picked out together and Kouga was wearing a chest plate of armor with fur shoulder pads and a wolf skin around his waist. He had his hair in a high pony tale and he was wearing a brown headband. On his feet, he had what looked like fur boots. He even had a sword at his side.
“Hi Sango!” Kagome said happily, greeting her.
“Hey Kagome! Welcome to the party, so are you going to introduce me to your friend?” even though she had seen Kouga before they had never been properly introduced.
“This is Kouga,” Kagome said waving a hand back at him.
“Her boyfriend,” he added in a gravelly voice.
Kagome gave Sango a tired smile, “Well we better head back there people aren’t going to give beer to themselves even though it looks like they might have.” Kagome said looking at people holding cups.
“Oh Miroku went back there for the first rush before you got here,” Sango said.
“Oh that was nice of him. Well I’ll see you later I’m sure!” Kagome said leading Kouga back to the break room. Sango watched them weave through the crowd Kouga had a death grip on Kagome’s wrist as she led him along. ‘Is he going to stand back there with her all night? You would think he would want to enjoy the party.’ Sango shrugged her shoulders it was not her concern what he wanted to do with his free time.
People slowly trickled in after that and Sango was starting to get bored around the time Inuyasha arrived at nearly seven thirty. He was wearing a bright red Haori, and Sango realized as he strolled through the door that he was not wearing his concealment ring.
“What are you doing without your concealment!” she hissed.
“Woman, its Halloween everyone just thinks it’s a costume,” He replied offhandedly.
“But…” Sango said Inuyasha waved her off and headed through the crowd. She watched him disappear in a group of girls, ‘damn him if anyone figures out those are not fake ears we’re in trouble.’ She was brought from her thoughts by a drawling voice.
“Two please,” he was a tall man with silver white hair and a navy blue crescent moon painted on his brow, with pairs of pink stripes painted on each side of his face. He was wearing a white Haori with red trim and he had a large white fur wrapped over one shoulder. Next to him was a small woman, with a cat mask and a short black skirt with cheetah print.
“Ten dollars,” Sango said exchanging money with him, the girl in the mask gave her a look before disappearing into the crowd with the man. ‘Do I know that girl?’ Sango thought watching their retreating forms. As they walked through the crowd everyone seemed to part for them as they headed into the break room. Sango shook her self and went back to her duty. People flooded in and out and Sango felt in a daze. Around eight of clock Miroku came over.
“Why don’t you take a break? I’ll man the door.”
“Thanks,” she said appreciatively.
She headed towards the break room, when she had almost reached the door; the girl in the cat costume stopped her.
“We need to talk,” she said.
“Do I know you?” Sango said defensively.
The girl lifted up her mask. “It’s me Rin. We need to talk,” she said pleadingly.
“I don’t have anything else to say to you!” Sango said coldly.
“Please Sango just listen to me.”
“Get away from me. I meant what I said at the funeral,” she moved to walk away when Rin called after her.
“Kohaku told me to tell you what happened wasn’t your fault,” she said desperately.
Sango turned to look at her. How she could know that she blamed herself. For everything, for Kohaku’s death, even her parent’s death. The night that they had died her mother had asked her to go and pick up her brother from the school but she had lied and told them she had homework, in reality she just did not want to deal with it. There had not been a day since then that she had not blamed it on herself, if she had not been so selfish they would still be alive. She moved within an inch of Rin’s face.
“You’re right it’s your fault! If you hadn’t broken up with Kohaku he wouldn’t have killed himself,” Sango knew it was not true but how would Rin know, she could not let a three year grudge die.
“That’s not what happened at all. I never broke up with him!” Rin said pleadingly to Sango, “Kohaku told me two weeks before he died to tell you not to blame yourself, and that he wasn’t going to be around much longer. I wasn’t sure at the time but I think he was telling us he couldn’t live anymore.” Sango stared at her trying to form a reply, ‘is that true? What if she’s lying to me.’ she thought when suddenly she was slammed into by some one moving extremely fast. She looked down it was Kagome.
“Kagome?” she said,
Her face was streaked with tears “What happened?”
“Just get me out of here!” Kagome moaned. Sango and Rin looked at each other and there was an unspoken agreement; deal with our issue later Kagome needs us right now. The three of them headed towards the door.
********************************************* ***************
Kouga picked Kagome up from Jewel Shards shortly before the party was going to start and took her home to change. When she exited from her bedroom his jaw nearly dropped to the floor.
“You look stunning,” he said in awe, Kagome felt a light pink blush rise to her cheeks, she was used to Kouga’s compliments by now but there seemed to be extra conviction in his voice tonight.
“You look just like I remember her,” he said quietly.
“Her?” she said puzzled.
“Oh no, it’s nothing,” he said hastily, “Let’s get going the party will be starting soon.” He ushered her out the door and to the car. On the car ride there, Kagome could feel his eyes wandering over to her. She was used to him watching her but something about tonight was different, it was like he was mesmerized, she looked down at her outfit, ‘Is it what I’m wearing?’ She smoothed the folds of her Hakama. Her grandfather must have slipped it into her closet when they were helping her move in. She only wore it once to a Japanese festival and she could not think of any reason she would need it in San Diego. Her grandfather did strange things that only he understood the reason behind them. She was grateful for it if he had not she would probably be going to the party as some kind of sexy pirate.
They pulled into the jammed pack parking lot of Jewel Shard’s Bail Bond’s.
‘Good turn out,’ she thought happily, maybe they would get a little more business from this. Kagome had noticed they never got very busy and she almost never saw customers in the office, they did get many calls and Sango, Miroku and Inuyasha went out of bounty hunts nearly every week but there was not much foot traffic through the office. Kouga interrupted her thoughts as they neared the door.
“Ready gorgeous?” Kouga said wrapping his arm around her waist.
“Always,” she smiled.
Kouga pushed open the door and the large crowd of people’s voices washed over her. ‘There are a lot of people here.’ She saw Sango and they headed over to her.
“Hi Sango!” Kagome said happily.
“Hey Kagome! Welcome to the party, so are you going to introduce me to your friend?” Sango said looking over at Kouga.
“This is Kouga,” Kagome said plainly.
“Her boyfriend,” he added in a gravely voice ‘why does he need to say that every time?’ she thought.
Kagome gave Sango a tired smile, “Well we better head back there people aren’t going to give beer to themselves even though it looks like they might of,” Kagome said looking around the room at people with cups in there hands already, ‘I guess I should’ve gotten here earlier.’
“Oh Miroku went back there for the first rush before you got here,” Sango said.
“Oh that was nice of him. Well I’ll see you later I’m sure!” Kagome said, ‘I should thank him later for covering for me.’
Kagome led Kouga through the crowd as he clutched to her hand tightly. People watched the pair of them as they moved through the crowd they must have been a pair Kouga in his ’wolf demon’ costume and Kagome in her own costume. Kagome heard a growl come from Kouga as a guy they walked by made a comment about her appearance.
“That girl is beautiful,” he said.
“Back off punk this is my woman,” Kouga snarled.
“Kouga stop it,” Kagome whispered dragging him into the break room.
There was a line already at the keg and Kagome spent a good thirty minutes giving everyone there refreshments before the crowd thinned out.
“You don’t have to hover over me all night Kouga you can go enjoy the party,” She said hoping he would not hover over her all night.
“I’m not leaving you alone with all these guys, when you look like that,” he said defensively.
Kagome looked down at her clothes for the second time that night, this had to be the most modest she could of dressed. Her Hakama went to the floor, and her Hakui reached down to her wrists and there was nothing revealing about anything she was wearing.
“What do you mean? I’m not even showing any skin,” she said confused.
“Doesn’t matter, these guys are all drunk,” he said looking on guard, something had caught his attention.
She sighed and decided to not press the issue. He obviously did not want to leave her alone. She continued passing out drinks for a while until, Rin showed up followed by Professor Takahashi who surprisingly was in a costume as well.
“Rin,” Kagome said happily.
“Hey Kagome!” she said running over, the tail of her cat costume swishing behind her.
The pair of them hugged while Kouga and Professor Takahashi eyed each other suspiciously.
“You’ve brought Professor Takahashi,” Kagome said happily.
“You may call me Sesshomaru outside of the class room,” he said training his bored expression on Kagome.
“Oh sure Sesshomaru,” Kagome said nervously even out of the classroom he was daunting, “So have you talked to Sango yet?” Kagome said excitedly.
“No not yet we just got here, and I’m a little nervous,” She said looking around. Kagome watched Sesshomaru gently place a hand on her shoulder, Rin looked up at him and smiled, and Kagome swore she saw a hint of a smile on his face.
“Don’t be nervous,” she said, “She can’t murder you when it’s this crowded.”
“I’m not worried about that. I’m just afraid she won’t listen to me,” she said
“I know she’ll listen to you!” Kagome said brightly.
“You’re right! Now how do I get her alone? She’s watching the door right?”
“I have an idea for that,” Kagome said. “I’ll go ask Miroku to give her a break and when she heads toward the break room you stop her and talk to her!” Kagome said excitedly.
“That’s a great idea!” Rin cheered.
“Great well are you ready right now? It’s nearly eight o’clock.”
“I’m as ready as I’m going to get,” Rin said with resolve.
“Great I’ll be right back. Kouga can you watch the keg for me until I get back?”
“Huh? Sure,” he said distractedly, Kagome noticed he was watching the entrance to the break room. She stepped out into the crowd, sifting through people when she noticed Inuyasha in the far corner surrounded by girls in costumes Kagome herself had rejected, his hair looked silvery white in the lights they had put up and he had a pair of triangle ears on his head. ‘How cute,’ she thought, the girls must have thought so too and one reached up to touch it. Kagome turned away it made her feel a little jealous to see another girl flirting with him. ‘Why are you jealous Kagome? He‘s just your boss get over it,’ she scolded herself.
Miroku was in the corner starting another play list when she finally managed to reach him.
“Hey can I ask a favor?” she said over the music.
“Anything for you Ms. Kagome” he said smiling.
“Could you give Sango a break from the door?” she pleaded with puppy dog eyes.
“Sure, by the way did you ever talk to her?” he asked with concern in his eyes.
“I did, have you?” she replied.
“Yeah,” he said plainly.
“How did it go?” she questioned.
“She seemed receptive,” he said sadly.
“Give her time. I’m sure she’ll forgive you,” Kagome said genuinely.
“Thanks Kagome. I’ll go relieve Sango of her duties now,” he set a random shuffle on the play list and headed back towards the door. Kagome made her way through the crowd when she spotted Inuyasha again with a brunette girl in a French maid costume. She was clinging onto his arm. ‘I guess it is impossible for someone as attractive as him to keep girls off of him at a party,’ she thought darkly, ‘why do I care he’s just a friend!’ She stormed past them and headed back to the break room. Rin and Sesshomaru were standing by while Kouga was shouting into his cell phone.
“I can’t take care of it right now!”
“You should go out there Rin, I just sent Miroku to send Sango on a break and she’ll be heading this way,” Kagome said.
“Thanks,” Rin said, heading towards the door, Sesshomaru on her heels.
“Good luck!” she called after there retreating backs.
Kouga came over to her with the phone still glued to his head; he covered the receiver as he spoke to her.
“I’m sorry Kagome, but I have to take this call it’s important, I’ll be right back,” he kissed her on the forehead then stomped out shouting into the phone once more.
“I’m at a party and I can’t fly out right now!”
‘I wonder who he is talking to,’ Kagome thought.
Kagome took a seat near the keg and waited for some thirsty partygoers. She was picking at a sticker on the keg when she saw a flash of red. She looked up to see Inuyasha standing in the doorway to the break room, he was wearing a bright red Haori and had the triangle ears she had seen earlier on his head. ‘They almost look real in this light,’ she mused.
“Kagome?” he said in a quiet tone.
“Hey I like your costume,” she said happily.
He moved a few steps closer to her, and she stood up. ‘What is wrong with him? He is acting strange.’
“Your outfit…”
“Yeah it’s something my grandfather gave me,” she looked down, ‘What is it about this that is making everyone crazy?’ She looked up again and Inuyasha was a hands breath away from her.
“Kagome…” he breathed.
“Inuyasha?” she said puzzled.
He took her head in his hands and brought her lips to his. Her eyes flew open, ‘why is Inuyasha kissing me? Why does this feel so familiar? So right?’ He wrapped his arms around her. She could feel herself getting lost in him. ‘What am I doing? I have a boyfriend.’ she pushed Inuyasha away gently.
“Inuyasha what’s going on?” she said searching his eyes, they were not amber today they were gold; something about them reminded her of a memory like something she could not grasp.
“I’ve found you again… Kikyo,” he said caressingly bringing her to his chest.
“KIKYO!” she shouted pushing him away. “Inuyasha, I’m not Kikyo!”
“Kagome I’m sorry I didn’t mean it! Let me explain!” he said quickly
“You don’t need to explain. I understand completely! I look like that bitch Kikyo and since she is unstable and keeps breaking up with you all the time you figured you could go for the next best thing! Me! But what you didn’t consider is I have a BOYFRIEND. You can’t just go around kissing people, Inuyasha. I’m not some sort of toy, so quit playing with my emotions.”
“Kagome please,” he pleaded trying to grab her wrist.
“NO! Get away. I hate you Inuyasha,” she tore away from him and out of the break room tears spilling down her face.
Within two feet of the break room she ran into Sango.
“Kagome? What happened?” Sango said with concern.
“Just get me out of here!” she sobbed.
********************************* *************************
Inuyasha barreled into the parking lot of Jewel Shard’s, and he put his baby in park then jumped out. A group of college-aged guys ogled over the car. ‘That’s right its mine,’ he thought smugly strolling past them. It felt good to be back in his old fire rat Haori and without his concealment, his ears twitched back and forth at the noise around him. ‘I have to control that tonight,’ he thought. Halloween was the one night a year all the Youkai went without concealments because everyone just thought they were wearing costumes. He walked through the front door and he could see the surprise on Sango’s face that he had not worn his concealment.
“What are you doing without your concealment!” she hissed.
“Woman, its Halloween everyone just thinks it’s a costume,” He replied offhandedly.
“But...” Sango said. He just walked away. He was not going to listen to her lectures. This was the one night of the year he could be himself. With no concealment, and no hiding just being Inuyasha, it felt good. He made his way through the crowd greeting people. He watched as everyone ogled at what they thought was a costume. He found Miroku in the corner of the room with the music.
“How’s it been going?” He greeted.
“So far so good,” he said stacking some CD’s.
“Who’s here so far?” Inuyasha said scanning the crowd his sense of smell was dulled with this large crowd.
“Sango, Myself, and Kagome arrived about an hour ago with a gentleman,” Inuyasha felt his blood boil, he was not positive Kagome was the one but he still did not approve of who was with her.
“That damn wolf is here?” Inuyasha ground out.
“Yeah, I saw him come in with Kagome. I saw them go into the break room,” he said dismissively.
Inuyasha thought of going after him to tell him to leave but he knew it would only cause problems with Kagome and decided against it.
“Well I’m going to work the crowd,” Inuyasha said walking away from Miroku who was concentrating extremely hard on his CDs. ‘Trying not to piss off Sango, I bet,’ he thought. Inuyasha circled around talking to people giving out business cards when he felt a strong Youkai aura. ‘It couldn’t be him. Why would he be here?’ He looked to the entrance where his brother Sesshomaru was talking to Sango with a small human girl in a cat suit. ‘He’s with a human girl? Where’s Kagura? Oh, this is wonderful! I won’t let him live this one down.’ He moved forward to intercept his brother but instead was cornered by a group of scantly clad women.
“Hey, your costume is adorable!” a blond in a pirate costume gushed.
“Thanks,” he said gruffly as he watched Sesshomaru and the girl disappear into the break room. ‘Why is he here?’ He thought.
“Do you work here?” a brunette dressed as police officer asked.
“Yeah,” he said dismissively.
“Really it seems like all the employees have these great Japanese costumes,” the brunette gushed.
“Yeah it wasn’t planned,” he said trying to end the conversation with the pair of them.
“What are you though?” the blonde asked.
“Nothing,” Inuyasha said, he saw movement near the break room door.
“Then why do you have cute puppy ears?” the blond said with a pout.
Inuyasha watched as Kagome entered the party from the break room, she was wearing a red Hakama and a white Hakui. ‘She looks just like Kikyo wearing that. Does this mean she is Kikyo’s reincarnation?’
“Hello, are you ignoring me?” the blond said looking annoyed.
He gave her a glare, which she did not seem to see.
“Can we touch your ears?” she said reaching forward for him.
Kagome looked over at him then looked away. Inuyasha swatted the girls hand away.
“Don’t you know any manners?” he said gruffly.
She looked put out and glared at him. “How rude,” she mumbled to her friend as they walked away.
‘Good riddance,’ he thought scanning the crowd for Kagome. He saw her talking to Miroku. ‘I have to talk to her,’ he thought desperately moving through the crowd. He watched her head back to the break room as he was intercepted by a brunette in a French maid costume.
“Hey my names Tina what’s yours?” she said batting her lashes at him.
“Inuyasha,” he said gruffly trying to catch sight of Kagome.
“Oh how exotic,” she said seductively.
“Keh,” he said trying to move away, but she wrapped her arms around his arm.
“Where are you going?” she said holding tight.
“Trying to get away from you,” he said, then he saw Kagome about to enter the break room she threw a glance his way.
‘Shit she saw me with this tramp wrapped around my arm.’
“Well you’re not being fun,” she pouted.
“Get off wench,” he said shaking her off, then heading to the break room, as he was about to go in he was stopped by Sesshomaru.
“What are you doing here asshole,” Inuyasha spat, he needed to get to Kagome.
“Rin invited me and I thought I’d see what you’re doing with your time,” he drawled.
“Keh, impressed?” he said pausing to hear what his older brother thought of his business.
“Not particularly,” he said looking down at his claws.
“Thanks asshole,” Inuyasha said, he noticed Kouga leave the break room behind him, ‘now is my chance,’ he thought triumphantly.
“Out of my way,” he said pushing Sesshomaru aside; he noticed Sango out of the corner of his eye, talking to the girl Sesshomaru came with.
He walked into the break room and it was like the last time he had seen her all over, it felt like no time had passed at all.
“Kagome?” he said in a quiet tone, he was not sure if it was ‘her’ or a dream.
“Hey I like your costume,” she said happily, she smiled filling his heart with its warmth, this had to be her, how could he not of been sure before?
He moved a few steps closer to her, and she stood up.
“Your outfit…” ‘It reminds me of the last time I saw her.’
“Yeah it’s something my grandfather gave me,” she looked down. He moved closer to her and he wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her like he‘d never done in the past.
“Kagome…” he breathed, her scent filled his nostrils, ‘and you are her, my Kikyo’s reincarnation,’
“Inuyasha?” she said looking confused.
He took her head in his hands and brought her lips to his. Electricity shot through his body. He felt the rightness, the feeling of being complete. There was no denying it; this was her, the one he had waited for, for five centuries. He wrapped his arms around her. He wanted to hold on and never let her go. She was his and he would hold her like this always. She pushed Inuyasha away gently and he longed to bring her back to him.
“Inuyasha what’s going on?” she said searching his eyes as he let himself get lost her dark brown pools.
“I’ve found you again… Kikyo,” he said the words of his heart, he knew her name had changed but she was the same one she always was.
“KIKYO!” she shouted pushing him away. “Inuyasha I’m not Kikyo!” ‘Shit I shouldn’t have called her Kikyo.’
“Kagome I’m sorry I didn’t mean it! Let me explain!” he pleaded, she had to understand, she was his it was destiny.
“You don’t need to explain I understand completely! I look like that bitch Kikyo and since she’s unstable and keeps breaking up with you all the time you figured you could go for the next best thing! Me! But what you didn’t consider is I have a BOYFRIEND! You can’t just go around kissing people Inuyasha. I’m not some sort of toy, so quit playing with my emotions,” her words hurt it was not like that at all. If only he could explain it to her.
“Kagome please,” he pleaded, trying to grab her wrist.
“NO, get away. I hate you Inuyasha,” she tore away from him, running out of the break room. He could smell the tears on her face. He stood dumbfounded for a moment. ‘I have to stop her and explain,’ he thought. He went to move out of the break room but Sesshomaru stepped in blocking his way.
“What happened? Why is that woman crying?” he said in a disinterested way.
“She’s Kikyo’s reincarnation,” Inuyasha said plainly, “get out of my way I need to talk to her.”
“I think you’ve done enough talking,” he said blocking his way, “Inuyasha you need to give up this feudal search, that wolf Youkai has already claimed her she wears his mark on her wrist, you’re too late.”
“No I’m not, I can’t be too late she’s my destiny,” he pushed past Sesshomaru, Inuyasha tore out of the room, but they were already out the door. ‘Shit I have to talk to her I have to explain!’
*********************************************************
Kagome stared forward blankly between Sango and Rin in the front seat of Sango’s jeep. The city streets passed by as they sped towards her home. All three of them were silent and Kagome felt ready to explode. Inuyasha had kissed her, ‘He kissed me!’ She screamed inside her head, she was torn between joy and confusion. It felt so right being in his arms with his lips pressed against hers, but she had a boyfriend, and she could not go around kissing everyone who walked into a room. ‘Why would he do that though, he walked in when she was all alone, it was like it was planned. More like it was fate,’ a voice whispered in her mind, ‘it couldn’t be. He thinks I look like Kikyo. That’s why he called me Kikyo again. He’s looking to replace her with me, but I won’t be a replacement,’ she concluded.
What would Kouga do when he realized she had disappeared from the party? Would he come to her house, she didn’t really want to see him tonight. She really just wanted to sleep and try and forget all of these conflicting emotions. ‘I’ll call him in the morning,’ she thought. She looked at Rin out of the corner of her eye, concern all over her face.
“You okay Kagome?” she said hesitantly.
“I’m okay now,” she said.
“What happened?” Sango added.
Kagome sighed, “Inuyasha kissed me.”
“WHAT!” they both shouted.
“It’s not a big deal,” Kagome said in a tired tone, she did not want to talk about it, she just wanted to sleep.
“It is not nothing!” Sango replied.
“Did he explain himself?” Rin added.
“I didn’t give him time to explain. He thought I was Kikyo again, or that I look enough like Kikyo for me to be her replacement. I don’t know really. All I know is that he came into the break room and said something about my costume then before I knew it he kissed me. Then when I asked him what was going on he called me Kikyo, again.” she said.
“Again?” Rin said.
“Yeah, a couple months ago Inuyasha and Kagome were alone together and he thought she was Kikyo and he called her his beloved and stuff,” Sango said.
“Who is Kikyo?” Rin questioned.
So Sango spent the rest of the drive explaining the situation with Kikyo while Kagome let their words wash over her. She slipped into unconsciousness for a few moments.
When she woke up they were at her apartment and Rin was shaking her shoulder.
“Kagome you’re home,” she said softly.
“Oh thanks,” she said sleepily. She climbed out of the jeep then dragged herself up the steps to her apartment, Sango and Rin followed after her. She unlocked her door and headed to her couch collapsing on it.
“You guys don’t have to stay. I’m not going to be any fun tonight,” she said with half closed eyes from the couch.
“I can’t leave you alone like this,” Sango said.
“Me neither,” Rin added.
Kagome looked from one then to the other, then something dawned on her, they hated each other yet they were both in her living room looking at her with concern. ‘Have they resolved their differences?’ She thought sitting up to look at them.
“You’re both here,” she said.
“Yeah your point,” Sango said.
“I thought you hate each other,” Kagome said hesitantly.
Sango looked over at Rin and Rin looked back at her.
“I guess we forgot when you were upset,” Rin said.
“Yeah,” Sango said rubbing her neck, “Rin, I’m sorry for blaming you all these years. I guess I just need to realize that Kohaku had problems and no one could change that, it wasn’t your fault. He loved you. I know he did. I should of listened to you before,” Sango said.
“Sango that’s all I ever wanted. I’m so sorry for everything I wish I could have done more,” Rin said.
“No please just giving me that message really helps me,” she said tears in her eyes.
“Oh don’t cry Sango. I’ll cry!” Rin said tears welling up.
“You’re both making me cry!” Kagome wailed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Oh Kagome don’t cry please were friends now,” Rin said rushing over to sit on the couch next to her.
“That’s why I’m crying. I felt so bad for that day and all I’ve wanted was for you two to become friends and now you’re understanding each other, It just makes me so happy,” Kagome said.
“Kagome,” Sango said sitting on her opposite side.
“I’m sorry,” Kagome sniffled rubbing her eyes dry, “It’s been a long night.”
“I know,” Sango said soothingly, “But lets forget all the drama and let’s just have fun. It isn’t too late, why don’t we watch a movie?”
“Yeah!” Rin cheered.
“Anything but a romance,” Kagome said.
“Of course,” Sango conceded.
“I’m going to pick something,” Rin said jumping up to flip through Kagome’s DVD collection.
“I’m going to change,” Kagome said standing up and heading to her room.
She slipped off her Hakama and Hakui and rummaged around in her drawers for pajamas for a few minutes when she heard a knock at her front door. ‘Who could be here?’ She thought as she pulled on a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt, heading into the living. Kouga was in the doorway to her apartment and Sango was standing in the doorway talking to him, while Rin watched from the living room floor a few feet away.
“Let me in. I need to see Kagome,” he said to Sango.
“She doesn’t want to see anyone right now,” Sango said firmly.
“I’m her boyfriend damn it; let me in,” he growled.
“Let him in,” Kagome said tiredly. She knew he would do something like this, ‘better get this over now’ she thought.
“Kagome!” he said brushing past Sango, “What happened when I came back from my call you were gone, and that guy you work with said you left.”
“It’s nothing to worry about. I was just feeling ill and I couldn’t find you so Sango and Rin brought me home.”
“You should have called me I would of…” He stopped as he approached her, “Why do you smell like him?” he said narrowing his eyes.
“Like who?” she said feeling confused.
“Like that dog shit Inuyasha!” he said his voice rising.
Kagome pulled her shirt up smelling it. Was Inuyasha wearing cologne. she didn’t smell anything.
“What do you mean I smell like him?” she said cautiously. Did he know about the kiss? How could he?
“His stench is all over you, what did you do?” he accused.
He knows! She panicked, she glanced at Sango and Rin both shrugged their shoulders at her. ‘I should tell him the truth,’ she decided.
“Inuyasha kissed me,” she said firmly.
“HE WHAT!” he thundered moving in close to Kagome. He looked like he was going to strangle her.
“He kissed me,” she repeated.
“Kagome you’re my woman, he had no right to touch you!”
Kagome bristled with indignation; he was speaking to her as if she was property.
“Kouga I am not your property. This is my body and I make the decisions for it and if someone wants to kiss me then they can kiss me, you have no control over that,” she said feeling the rage coursing through her.
“I will not sit by while that mutt tries to take what is mine. You may not be mine yet, Kagome, but soon enough you will be mine alone; don’t forget that.”
“When did I ever agree to be yours? I am my own person Kouga and if you don’t understand that then you need to get out of my life!” she shouted.
“You’re my girlfriend Kagome you can’t let other people kiss you and act like nothing happened!” he shouted back.
“Shut up Kouga. I don’t need you controlling my life. Get out of my house!”
“Fine, I’ll leave,” he said in a dangerously quiet voice, “But first,” he said grabbing Kagome by the arms, pulled her close and kissed her violently. She tried to pull away but he would not let go. He bit her lip and she swore she could feel a fang graze her as it drew blood.
“You are mine Kagome, whether you like it or not you’re mine,” he said before going out the door.
Kagome watched him go, pressing her hand to her lip where he had drawn blood. Rin brought her a tissue and she pressed the tissue to her lip.
“That asshole!” Sango fumed, “Just give me the word and I’ll have his balls on a plate for you!”
“Don’t,” Kagome, said, “He’s not worth the effort.”
“Does he normally talk to you like that?” Rin said quietly next to her.
“No,” Kagome said looking at the door, “he’s protective but he’s never been overly aggressive like he was tonight. I think there’s a history between him and Inuyasha.”
Some kind of emotion flickered across Sango’s face that Kagome could not decipher.
“Why don’t we spend the night Kagome, I don’t trust that asshole to not come back here tonight and cause trouble,” Sango suggested.
“Could you?” she said pleadingly.
“Of course,” Sango said smiling at her, “I’m going to get a change of clothes from the jeep. I’ll be right back.”
Rin’s phone rang and she walked into the kitchen to answer it. She returned a few minutes later a goofy look on her face.
“Who was that?” Kagome said.
“It was Sesshy making sure I was alright,” she said her face beaming.
“Sesshy?” Kagome said raising a brow.
“Yeah,” Rin blushed, “that’s my nickname for him.”
“It’s cute,” Kagome conceited, “you’re really into him huh?”
“You don’t even know,” Rin said dramatically.
They both had a good laugh and Kagome realized Sango had been gone for a few minutes.
“Where’s Sango?” Kagome said with concern.
“I don’t know,” Rin replied, “She’s been gone for like five minutes.”
“Maybe we should check on her,” Kagome said walking to the door, just then Sango burst in with a look of fury on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Kagome said looking at her flushed face.
“Oh nothing,” she said her face going blank.
“It doesn’t look like nothing,” Kagome commented.
“Don’t worry about it,” she said hastily, “Hey Rin, I have some clothes for you to wear,” she said changing the subject.
Once they had all changed out of their costumes and into comfortable clothes they all got comfortable on the couch and watched a comedy together, by the time Kagome went to bed that night she was feeling a lot lighter, if not, less confused.
************************** *****************************
The moment there lips had touched he knew she was the one he had been searching for. The electricity that shot down his body and that damn wolf sniffing around; it was all falling into place and he had been too blind to see it before tonight. Then he had called her Kikyo again, a stupid mistake of course her soul would not remember her old name just because he had lived the last five hundred years holding that name close to his heart did not mean she had. He had to explain everything to her, he had to explain; and he did not care if that damn wolf had claimed her. She was not even aware of it. That was not fair to her, he would explain everything, uncover that damn wolf for what he was and then she would understand. He just had to see her.
He reached her apartment in record time he could not have done it faster even if he had ran here. He noticed that bastard Kouga’s car in the parking lot; ‘he beat me here but how?’ No matter, once he explained it to her she would take his side she would remember their past together. He ran up to the landing he could hear them arguing.
“Kagome you’re my woman, he had no right to touch you!”
‘That’s what he thinks,’ he thought cracking his knuckles.
“Kouga I am not your property, this is my body and I make the decisions for it and if someone wants to kiss me then they can kiss me you have no control over that.” she said with venom, ‘did she not mind that I kissed her after all?’
“I will not sit by while that mutt tries to take what is mine. You may not be mine, yet Kagome but soon enough you will be mine alone, don’t forget that.”
‘She ain’t yours asshole!’
“When did I ever agree to be yours? I am my own person Kouga and if you don’t understand that then you need to get out of my life!” she shouted.
‘That’s right she never agreed to you marking her!’
“You’re my girlfriend Kagome you can’t let other people kiss you and act like nothing happened!” he shouted back.
‘Not for much longer,’ he thought triumphantly.
“Shut up Kouga. I don’t need you controlling my life. Get out of my house!”
“Fine, I’ll leave… but first.”
He could smell Kagome’s fear, it took all his self-control not to bust down the door and rip his head off. He backed away from the door; Kagome would have to wait, he needed to teach that mangy wolf a lesson. Kouga came out slamming the door closed behind him and that’s when Inuyasha pounced. He lunged at him throwing him to the concrete below Kagome’s apartment landing.
“YOU!” He roared, getting to his feet after the fall, Inuyasha jumped down to the ground next to him.
“That’s right me,” Inuyasha said looking at him vehemently.
“You keep your filthy mutt hands off of my Kagome.”
“Your Kagome now is it? Does she even know that you’ve marked her, you haven’t changed at all have you?” Inuyasha spat.
“Neither have you dog-shit thinking your even worthy of her, then ignoring the fact that she’s taken.” Kouga started circling Inuyasha. ‘If he wants a fight I’ll give him a fight,’ Inuyasha thought.
“You haven’t really taken her,” he scoffed, “her scent hasn’t changed since the day I met her she’s still pure.”
“As soon as things are ready, I will take Kagome as my mate and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.”
That was the last straw for Inuyasha, he felt his Youkai blood take over; he felt his eyes bleed red as memories of five hundred years ago flooded his mind, of ‘her’ empty eyes, of her slipping away. He couldn’t let it happen again.
“NO! I wont let you,” he lunged forward then claws extended wanting to rip and tear at his flesh. His claws met his shoulder tearing into him, he smelled blood and it fueled his rage, Kouga jumped away.
“I will take her just like I did last time and there’s nothing you can do to stop me,” Kouga taunted.
Inuyasha was filled with blind hatred as he lunged again meeting his gut with his shoulder throwing his entire body into him knocking him to the ground to straddle his torso and clawing at his face while Kouga attempted to get out from beneath him. A snarl roared in Inuyasha’s throat as he pummeled the wolf Youkai’s face. Blood was everywhere. He was going to kill him if he had to. He would not let him hurt Kagome he would not let it happen again. Then he heard someone shouting behind him.
“Inuyasha what the hell are you doing!”
‘Killing a piece of shit!’ he thought.
“Inuyasha stop it!” hands were on his shoulders and he looked at Sango. Her face a perfect expression of absolute terror, Kouga took his chance and slipped out beneath him.
“This isn’t the end dog-shit, I’ll be back,” he jumped into his car and peeled out of the parking lot.
Inuyasha went to chase after him but Sango stopped him.
“Inuyasha what are you doing here?” she said still looking afraid.
“You let him get away!” he roared.
“Inuyasha why are you here!” she repeated. ‘Kagome,’ he thought. He could feel his Youkai calm and he needed to explain to Sango so he could talk to Kagome.
“I’m here to see Kagome,” he said snarling.
“Kagome doesn’t want to see you,” she said flatly.
“Sango, I have to explain, I know now, she’s the one,” he said a little more calm.
“Inuyasha you called her Kikyo again, she’s not going to understand she thinks she’s a replacement, you need to give her space.”
“I can’t give her space you don’t know what that bastard is going to do!” he said urgently.
“I heard what he said to Kagome, he’s very possessive but his girlfriend was just kissed by another man, and nobody is okay with that, I know you have a history together but you can’t go around confusing Kagome like that.”
“I’m not trying to confuse her. I was confused too but now I know, she’s the one!”
“Inuyasha just stop, it’s been a long night Kagome is exhausted just leave her alone for now let her come to you.”
He knew the argument was over there was nothing left to say he had messed up once more, and if he did not fix it soon Kagome could get hurt. Sango went to her jeep grabbed a bag then headed back to Kagome’s apartment. He sat outside watching until all the lights went out and he knew for sure Kouga was not coming back.
‘I need to wait,’ he thought as the lights dimmed, ‘I would wait another five hundred years for you Kagome.’
