Chapter Seven:

”He did what?” Kagome shouted in amazement, making a mother and son standing a few feet away stare at her.
“He disabled my jeep so he could drive me home then he tried to seduce me,” Sango said quietly trying to take the woman and son’s attention away from them. The woman eyed them suspiciously then left the aisle they were all standing in.
“I can’t believe he would sink so low,” Kagome fumed.
“The worst part is I would of slept with him if he hadn’t let that last little bit of information slip out,” she said sadly.
“Sango!” Kagome said affronted.
“What? I’m a woman. I have needs and I’m certainly not a virgin anymore,” she said casually.
“Oh, yeah right,” Kagome said, looking down at her hands.
“Kagome, are you still a virgin?” She said in disbelief.
“Yes,” she replied shyly.
“I thought for sure you weren’t, the way Kouga is all over you,” she continued.
“No, I’m not ready yet. I want it to be special for my first time,” she said innocently.

That was only partly true she was not sure if Kouga was the one, he was gently insistent about them having sex. He tried on several occasion since they started dating to get her to sleep with him but in the end she was not ready. He told her he would wait but she feared for when he would lose his patience.
“You’re a dying breed Kago“me,” Sango said shaking her head, “Hey look at these cute pumpkin lights. Wouldn’t they be great for the party?” she said holding up a string of orange and purpled jack-o-lantern lights.
“Those are adorable!” Kagome cheered, Sango dropped them in their shopping cart as they continued down the aisle. Inuyasha had sent Sango and herself out to buy decorations for the party. So far, they had picked out some party supplies, cups, napkins plates and silverware and they had moved to the aisle of the store that held decorations. Kagome found a witch that looked like it ran into a wall with a broom stick coming out the back.
“I like this. What do you think?” she said to Sango holding it up.
“That’s hilarious! Let’s get it,” Sango said excitedly.
“Isn’t it fun spending money when it’s not yours” Kagome said looking at a candy bowl with a hand sticking out of it.
“It sure is!” Sango agreed.

They perused the aisle for a while longer; finding a fog machine, and some purple and black streamers along with some other miscellaneous items to decorate the office with.
“Why don’t we check out the costumes?” Sango suggested.
“Yeah I have no idea what I want to be though,” Kagome said thoughtfully.
“Don’t worry this place is famous for its huge selection of costumes,” Sango said as they headed to the center of the store.

There were rows upon rows of costumes in every size shape and color.
“You weren’t kidding!” Kagome said awe struck.
“Nope!” Sango said happily heading down the nearest aisle. Kagome walked among the aisles of costumes, some were better than others; there were clowns, monsters, devils, the standard witches and cats. She picked up a few costumes and looked them over cautiously. It seemed everything was either extremely skimpy or made for a child. When she had chosen five decent costumes, she headed over to the dressing room where Sango was already changing.
“Kagome, I think I’ve found the perfect costume!” she said happily from behind the door.
“Well don’t keep me in suspense let me see,” she said excitedly.
Sango stepped out wearing a black leotard that was wrist length and with a high collar, the legs of it fit tightly against her body, on the shoulders, elbows, knee’s and waist there was pink armor with white trim around them, around the armor on her waist she wore a bright pink sash. In the fitting room behind her were knee length black boots with pink trim.
“What do you think?” Sango said hesitantly.
“Sango you look amazing!” Kagome enthused.
“You think so, I was afraid it was a little too form fitting,” She said looking down at her body.
“NO! You totally have the body for it!” She added.
“You’re so sweet, but wait you didn’t see all the accessories that come with this costume!” Sango dashed away from the fitting room and disappeared down a clothing aisle, Kagome watched as she returned with a giant plastic boomerang that was as tall and as wide as Sango.
“This whole costume is called ‘demon slayer’! I couldn’t pass it up once I read the name!” She said happily. Kagome looked at the entire affect of her costume and it fit her perfectly, she looked very intimidating, then a thought crossed her mind, ‘What about Miroku?’
“Aren’t you concern about Miroku’s busy hands with that outfit?” Kagome said aloud cautiously.
“Oh, I’ve thought of that already,” Sango said reaching into her dressing room she pulled out a costume bag with purple and black fabric in it Kagome looked at the name on the bag which read ‘Buddhist Monk’.
“That’s so perfect!” Kagome said excitedly clapping her hands.
“I know let’s see that lecher try and be perverted dressed as a monk!” Sango said evilly.
“You’re terrible Sango,” Kagome said walking into the adjacent dressing room.
She tried on a cat costume; it was pink with leopard print and had a cute pink skirt she pulled it up to her hips. Then she pulled on the flimsy spaghetti strap. ‘I don’t know about this.’ she thought looking at herself in the mirror. The shirt only covered half of her abdomen and her breast spilled out the top.
“Let’s see!” Sango called from the other side of the door.
“I don’t know this is a little revealing,” She gulped.
“Come on, no one’s around! Just really quick,” Sango urged.
“Oh okay,” she said cracking the door open, but Sango threw it open revealing her to the entire store. A group of guys walked by and gawked openly,
“Nice legs babe!” one called.
“Can I get your number!” another called.
Kagome felt her face turning red.
“Hey, perverts this isn’t a private show move on!” Sango shouted. The guys looked scared and walked away but not without a few more glances in Kagome’s direction.
“Okay definitely not!” Kagome said.
“Yeah maybe a little too strip club,” Sango conceded.
“Well, I have a few more I’m going to try on,” Kagome said closing the door.

Nearly an hour later Kagome still hadn’t found anything that fit her personality, Sango had done her best to find less revealing costumes but that resulted in the giant banana costume and the giant baby costume.
“It’s hopeless,” Kagome said slipping out of her final costume, a sexy pirate.
“Don’t give up, there are other stores,” Sango said reassuringly,
“Do you really think they’ll have a better selection?” Kagome said from behind the door putting her clothes back on.
“Well, probably not,” Sango conceded.
“Maybe I have something at home,” Kagome said, coming out of the dressing room.
“Yeah good idea, homemade costumes are always better,” Sango supported.
“You’re right let’s pay for these things then drop them off and we can head back to my apartment.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Sango said happily.

They paid for their purchases and the company’s purchases then headed to Jewel Shard’s Bail Bonds. Upon arrival, Kagome went straight to the break room with the cups and other party supplies. Miroku was sitting at the break table looking depressed.
“Hey Miroku,” Kagome said kindly.
“Hey,” he said distractedly not looking up. ‘He seems really down,’ she thought. She opened her mouth to ask him what was wrong when Sango came in.
“Hey Kags where should I leave the fog machine…?” She turned to glare at Miroku. He raised his head to look at her. Kagome stood by while the pair of them stared at each other.
“Anyway,” Sango said ignoring Miroku’s presence, “where should we keep this until the party?” she heaved up the box that had the smoke machine in it.
“In here I guess,” Kagome suggested.
“Let me take that for you,” Miroku said standing up and moving forward to alleviate Sango’s load.
“I don’t need your help thanks,” she said angrily.
“Oh, yeah of course,” he replied quietly.
He started to walk out of the break room but Sango stopped him.
“I got you a costume,” she said evilly.
“You did?” he said with anticipation in his voice.
“Yeah here you go,” she said shoving the bag on her arm into Miroku’s awaiting hands. She set down the fog machine and walked out before he could take it out of the bag. Miroku looked down at the costume. He began laughing hysterically; Kagome wasn’t sure what to make of it.
“I deserve this…,” he said to himself.
Kagome stood by awkwardly not sure how to respond.
“Everything I said to her, I meant every word!” he said to Kagome.
“Sango doesn’t think so,” Kagome said awkwardly.
“Oh don’t I know It,” Miroku said mirthlessly.
“I’ll talk to her okay?” Kagome said helpfully.
“You don’t have to do that Kagome; you don’t owe me any favors,” He said dismissingly.
“I still will,” Kagome said following after Sango.

Miroku watched Kagome exit the break room, ‘I really pissed Sango off this time how could I be this foolish?’ He looked down at the costume in his hands, ‘what should I do with this?’ Inuyasha came into the break room, cup of ramen in his hand.
“Where are Sango and Kagome? I thought I heard them. Did they get back from shopping?”
“Yeah, they left already,” Miroku said not taking his eyes from the costume.
“What did you do?” Inuyasha said from the microwave, placing his cup of ramen in it.
“I told Sango how I felt,” Miroku said flatly.
“Somehow I feel like there’s more to this story,” Inuyasha said disbelievingly.
Miroku sighed he never could lie to Inuyasha.
“The other night I disabled Sango’s jeep so I could drive her home,”
“Sounds like something you would do,” Inuyasha conceited.
“Yeah, well I asked her straight out why she wouldn’t go out with me and her answer surprised me. She told me she was afraid,”
“Afraid?” Inuyasha said pulling his noodles from the microwave and stirring them.
“Afraid of getting hurt basically, so I told her how I’ve felt about her from the moment I met her, that I loved her. We got intimate and then as I was about to take her home I accidentally told her what I did to her car and she got mad, really mad. She stormed out of the car and wouldn’t get back in.” He looked up at Inuyasha who was watching him over the top of his ramen cup.
“You really fucked up this time,” Inuyasha said plainly.
“I know,” Miroku moaned.
Inuyasha reached across the table picking up the costume.
“What’s this?” he said holding it up.
“That’s Sango’s idea of a joke. It’s a monk costume. She thought it would be funny since she thinks I’m a pervert.”
“Are you going to wear it?” Inuyasha asked turning it over.
“Why? What purpose would that have other than humiliating me in front of strangers; it’s purple for gods’ sake!”
“So what, I’m wearing my old Fire Rat Haori, besides it would probably surprise her to see you in it.” Inuyasha said.
“Are you saying she might forgive me if I wear it?” he said with hope in his eyes.
“That’s not exactly what I meant,” Inuyasha said, but Miroku was no longer listening his mind was running with plans he would wear the costume and he would explain to Sango that it was not a trick; just a way to be alone with her. She had to understand it was all just a misunderstanding. ‘She has to understand,’ he thought desperately.

“This is hopeless,” Kagome moaned, sitting in a pile of clothes in the middle of her room. Sango was still looking through her closet.
“What about that pretty green dress you bought that day we went shopping?” Sango suggested.
“No, I’m saving that for a special occasion,” Kagome said picking up a red t-shirt off the ground refolding it.
“Fine, let’s see,” she said thumbing through Kagome’s hanging clothes.
“I talked to Miroku after you left,” Kagome said casually.
“Oh really, what did that asshole have to say?” she said clutching at Kagome’s sapphire blue dress facing the closet.
“He told me he meant every word he said to you,” she said looking at Sango’s back; the tension in her shoulders seemed to soften slightly, “What did he say to you?” Kagome added.
Sango looked like she was raging a battle inside her as she turned to Kagome.
“He told me he was in love with me,” she said softly.
“He did?” Kagome said incredulously.
“But how could I trust what he says when he pulls a dirty trick like disabling my jeep?”
“He did look really sad today,” Kagome replied.
“He deserved to be unhappy I trusted him and he took advantage of me. I don’t appreciate that,” Sango said angrily turning to face Kagome.
“Still it’s something to think about,” Kagome said thoughtfully.
“I guess,” Sango said turning back to Kagome’s closet.
Kagome watched her move through her hanging items; she let the silence continue until Sango turned around with a garment bag in her hand.
“What about this?” She said holding it up.
Kagome walked over to her. She did not recognize the bag right away till she unzipped it.
“My grandfather must have snuck this in when they were helping me move in,” she exclaimed.
“That would be the perfect costume,” Sango said.

Kagome ran her hand along the soft fabric she had not worn it in years. She wondered why her grandfather would want her to have it with her here.
“You’re right it would,” Kagome conceited.

************************************************** ********

Rin sat down in her usual spot near the front of the classroom. Sesshomaru had not come in yet and neither had Kagome, but she had resolved herself to talk with Kagome. She would apologize for avoiding her, because in truth she had been. She did not know how to explain the situation to her entirely so she had avoided it all together. Kagome came in the door as Rin stared at it, (Kagome came through the door as Rin stared at it.) Rin waved Kagome over to sit next to her.
“Hey there stranger,” Kagome said happily.
“Hey sorry we haven’t talked lately. Could we get dinner together after class, my treat?” she said hopefully.
“Of course, I’d love to catch up!” Kagome said smiling brightly.
‘That’s a relief,’ Rin thought.
Sesshomaru walked in moments later silencing the class. She watched as her white-blond haired god instructed the class. Even though she was enjoying her Sesshomaru showing, she could not help but feel dread creeping up in her stomach. What if Kagome took Sango’s side? What if she thought she should have told someone her suspicions about Kohaku, and what if she thought it was her fault too? Sesshomaru seemed to sense her fear and gave her a fleeting glance. She smiled back at him and a ghost of a smile appeared on his lips. It was enough to give her the confidence she needed. Class ended shortly, after and she packed up her things; she and Kagome headed to the cafeteria.
“Fancy,” Kagome said jokingly.
“Sorry, I’m kind of broke,” Rin admitted.
“You don’t have to buy my dinner if you can’t afford it!” Kagome said hastily waving her hands in defense.
“Oh no, that’s not what I meant besides I owe you for ignoring you!” Rin said feeling guilty for mentioning her lack of cash.
“But you had every right to, I made you see Sango and brought up all those bad feelings,” Kagome said.
“How about this, I’ll give you a ride home and we’ll call it even,” Rin suggested, with the two of them this argument could go on for days.
“Deal!” Kagome said happily.

They went through the line both getting pre-made salads and a drink when they found a table Rin began.
“So I wanted to eat dinner with you so I could explain my side of the story,” She said quickly before her nerve left her.
“I figured as much,” Kagome said sipping on her soda.
“Well, where should I start?”
“From the beginning is best,” Kagome said helpfully.
“Okay,” Rin took in a breath, “I met Kohaku in my junior year of high school. We met by chance, because we ran with completely different circles. I was an honor role student good grades, good family, and large circle of friends. Kohaku was well Kohaku, he was extremely introverted, he didn’t talk much in at school and pretty much skated by as far as school went.”
“One day I was running late to class and I ran into Kohaku, literally, ran into him. We both fell on our backs and my backpack split open. He helped me pick up my things and gave me his backpack off his back. When I asked him how to return his backpack, he told me it wasn’t necessary. But I wouldn’t leave it at that. I asked him his name and homeroom. That night I went home and bought him a new one. The next morning I showed up at his homeroom with his replacement backpack. I remember he looked surprised to see me, he asked me my name. He had this look in his eyes like a light being lit in a dark room. We became friends after that, and slowly I got to know him and eventually he asked me out. All my friends hated the idea of me dating him but I didn’t care. They didn’t see what I saw, a sweet caring boy who just needed someone to understand him. We dated for two years. Over those two years I watched the darkness slowly disappear from his eyes. He was almost happy for a while, he was like any other teenage boy, we talked about going to college, here together; once we graduated.” She paused trying to fight back the tears. “Then about a month from prom a guy I was friends with tried to ask me out. I told him I was going with Kohaku, he knew that already he was just trying to start trouble. I told Kohaku and he confronted the guy, that day at lunch and they guy called him out in front of the entire school. He called him a parent killer. He had somehow found out about Kohaku’s parents’ accident. Kohaku always blamed himself for it. I don’t know how much you know about the accident but his parents died on the way to pick him up from detention. It was raining out and their car was t-boned by a semi. Kohaku was convinced if he hadn’t gotten into trouble his parents wouldn’t have died.”
“That’s why,” Kagome said quietly.
“Yeah,” Rin replied looking down, “Anyway the guy called him those horrible names in front of the whole school and it was like something snapped inside of Kohaku and I watched the light fade from his eyes again. He stopped talking about the future and he became obsessed with death. Two weeks before he died we were laying in bed together when he told me he wasn’t going to be around much longer, he made me promise to not cry for him and to tell Sango what happened wasn’t her fault. I didn’t hear from him again after that night, the next time I heard anything he was already gone.” Rin could feel the tears pricking her eyes, she was losing composure Kagome came around and wrapped her arm around her shoulders. “I tried talking to Sango at his funeral but she blamed me for what happened.”
“She told me that if she ever saw me again, she would kill me and I believed her. In a way she’s right though, it was my fault. If I had told someone what he was planning he could have been saved.” She put her face in her hands crying quietly, Kagome squeezed her shoulders tight.
“Rin you couldn’t of really known. It’s easy to see the signs afterwards, don’t blame yourself,” she said soothingly.
“Thanks Kagome,” she sniffled.
“Thank you for sharing your story with me. I’m sure it has to be painful for you,” she said kindly.
“I thought I had moved on till I saw Sango again,” Rin admitted.
“I’m sorry that’s my fault, I promise to be better in the future,” she said apologetically.
“Don’t apologize you couldn’t of known,” she said looking her in the eyes.
“Fine, but I do think you should talk to Sango. She needs to know what Kohaku wanted you to say to her.”
“You’re right, Sesshomaru said the same thing,” she said drying her eyes.
She watched Kagome’s eyes widen with surprise.
“Professor Takahashi?” she said incredulously.
“Oh yeah you haven’t been around. I’m seeing him now but it’s kind of a secret.”
“WHAT!!” Kagome shouted, a few students at nearby tables looked at the pair of them, “how did this happen?” Kagome whispered.
“Well it actually happened that day I went to meet you at the mall, I ran into him and one thing led to another and we ended up at his place,”
“I can’t believe it,” Kagome said looking dazed, “It’s like something out of a movie.”
“I know it’s pretty unbelievable,” Rin said happily.
“Why is it a secret?” Kagome said conspiring manner.
“Well he’s married,” Rin admitted.
“No way! Are you sleeping with a married man?” Kagome said.
“Well there separated, it’s kind of complicated,”
“I guess,” Kagome said looking into the distance.
“Kagome can I ask you a favor?”
“Yeah sure,” she said happily.
“Could you set something up so I can talk to Sango preferably in a public place? I’d rather not get murdered.”
Kagome laughed then looked thoughtful, “I have a great idea were having a Halloween party at my work were inviting the entire neighborhood you should come, and bring Professor Takahashi, he’s my boss’s brother you know?”
“That would be perfect!” Rin said clapping her hands, “Wait your boss is related to Sesshomaru?”
“Yeah, he came to visit him a while ago and I ran into him as I was leaving the classroom.” Kagome supplied.
‘Is that the Hanyou Sesshomaru mentioned? It couldn’t be anyone else’ she thought, ‘does Kagome know about them?’ a side long glance at Kagome as she ate her salad.
Just to be safe I’m going to keep my mouth shut. To think I’m going to meet Kagome’s boss and the Hanyou who has spent the last five hundred years searching for dead woman on the same night I confront Sango. It sure is a small world.’ she thought.
“Something wrong Rin?” Kagome said with concern.
“Oh nothing just thinking,” she said.
“Well I’m done here how about we blow this popsicle stand?” Kagome said shouldering her giant yellow backpack.
“Sounds good to me,” she replied as they headed out the cafeteria door.
