Dear readers,

I apologize for any spelling errors in the last chapter. I will be sure to revise it and fix them soon enough. Please cope with me!! ^^ I’m a bit too lazy to proof read my stories before I submit them.

Inuyasha stalked closely behind Kagome, his eyes focused namely on the wolf demon who walked beside her with a smug smile on his face. When Kouga noticeably inched closer to Kagome, a strained growl rumbled within Inuyasha’s chest.

“So, Kagome,” Kouga began, catching the attention of the entire entourage, “Where are we going from here?”

Kagome looked over her shoulder at the hanyou doubtfully, and then back towards Kouga. “Well,” she began sweetly, “I detected a fragment of the sacred jewel around this area a few days ago but Miroku was injured from battle so we had to ignore it. We’ve decided to return and see if we can figure out where the jewel might have been coming from.”

“Not that that’s any of your business.” Inuyasha chided, “Why don’t you just shut up and let us do the work?”

Kagome glared over her shoulder at Inuyasha, “Hey, we’re allies now!” Kagome reminded him, “Don’t go starting any more fights, Inuyasha. So long as he’s accompanying us, we mind as well be good hosts.”

“That’s alright, Kagome.” Kouga smiled, resting a hand in her shoulder, “You’re a great hostess.”

Kagome looked away with a scowl, but Inuyasha noticed the flush in her cheeks. “Why the hell do they have to tag along, anyway?” Inuyasha asked, gesturing towards Hakakku and Ginta, “I don’t recall inviting them along.”

“What do you mean, Inuyasha?!” Ginta protested, “We’re Kouga’s right and left hand men! Of course we had to come along.”

“That’s right,” Hakakku added, “Kagome, tell him.”

“They’re right.” Kagome agreed firmly, “There’s nothing wrong with a little extra---“ her voice trailed off. Suddenly the clicking sound of her bicycle wheels stopped and Kagome stood frozen.

“Kagome, what’s wrong!?” Sango gasped.

Kagome stared forward with her lips agape. “Inuyasha….” Her voice began shakily, “I sense... evil.”

Inuyasha exchanged glances with Miroku then turned to Kagome. “What do you mean by that?”

Kouga grabbed Kagome’s hand and gawked at her frightful expression. “Kagome,” he began softly, “Do you sense the jewel? Talk to me, Kagome.”

Kagome turned towards the rest of the group. “No.” she began softly, “I don’t sense the jewel. It’s right here I sense it. An evil aura lingers about in this area. Inuyasha, can we leave…”

Inuyasha was ready to protest, but when he heard the desperation in her plea he had no choice. “Sure,” he agreed, “We’ll come back later. For today, let’s just concentrate on finding a village in the area.”

Kouga watched jealously as Kagome hurried into the protection of Inuyasha’s embrace. Inuyasha’s face brightened with a radiant red glow as he sheltered her. Kouga’s eyes remained focused on the couple the whole way back. He had wanted to stay and fight. To hurt whatever had frightened Kagome so much, but…

“Are you alright, Kouga?” The wolf demon jumped up when he became aware of the child kitsune that sat perched up on his shoulder.

“Who the hell are you, anyway?” Kouga asked, raising an eyebrow. He had seen the child before, but he never really knew his name.

The child blinked. “You don’t know?” he asked, sounding offended, “My name is Shippo. I’m Kagome’s best friend. If you really want to get close to her, you mind as well stick around me.”

“Shippo, what are you up to?” the Taijiya asked from a distance as she and the monk rode upon the twin tail’s back.

Shippo laughed innocently their way. “I’m… uh, just getting to know Kouga,” Shippo said, sweetly, “I’m not up to anything.”

Inuyasha growled, but it sounded almost content as he draped one arm around Kagome. “Better not let me catch you, brat.” Inuyasha spat out, “If I catch you being a little sneak, I’ll pound you to the ground.”

Shippo stuck his tongue out at Inuyasha when he turned his head and Kouga smirked somewhat. “So I guess Kagome really likes Inuyasha?” Kouga asked just above a whisper, on a sad note, “She always runs to him when she needs protection…”

Shippo sighed. “Yeah, Kagome’s really smart but when it comes to relationships she’s kind of an air head.” He confessed, “Just when Kagome and Inuyasha get close that dope runs to Kikyou and hurts her feelings. I hate it when that happens because it makes Kagome cry…”

Kouga gritted his teeth together. “That idiot does what!!?”

The whole group stopped to gawk at Kouga. He covered up his annoyance with an innocent laugh and, hesitantly, everybody continued to walk forward.

When they found a village they went to the nearest inn and paid for two separate rooms. One room was for Kagome, Shippo, Kirara, and Sango to sleep and the other was for the rest of the guys. Kouga had somewhat hoped that he could stay in the same room as Kagome. Not for perverse reasons, but so that he could watch over her as she slept.

When the group had to separate there was an eerie silence. Kagome stared towards Inuyasha with big bright eyes and rosy cheeks as she said goodnight. Kouga noticed the same transpire between the monk and the Taijiya.

“What’s up with all this lovey dovey crap anyway?” Kouga whispered to Shippo, irritated.

“I’ll bet you wouldn’t mind it so much if it were between you and Kagome.” Shippo whispered back with a slight grin. Kouga just crossed his arms over his chest and grumbled, not denying what the kit had suggested.

“Kouga-kun.” Kagome suddenly said, softly, “Thank you for joining us. Goodnight.”

Kouga’s whole attitude changed. A wide smile spread across his face as he waved after Kagome. Shippo rolled his eyes.

”Well… Goodbye!” Shippo chirped and he leaped from Kouga’s shoulder, hurrying after Kagome and Sango.

“That’s it.” Inuyasha turned to face Kouga when the men were left alone, “Don’t you dare lay a finger on Kagome, wolf man, and I’m serious!”

“What are you talking about, mutt!?” Kouga hissed, angrily.

“My good men,” Miroku interrupted calmly, “Must there always be hostility between you two? Let us enjoy the night if only this once.”

“I agree.” Hakakku said, “What’s the point in arguing?”

Inuyasha sighed and headed into the room saying over his shoulder, “You aren’t worth my time anyway.”

“Same to you.” Kouga retorted, and stumbled into the room after Inuyasha. Not a word was exchanged between the two for the rest of the night.

As Kouga lay in his bed that night, he couldn’t help but think of Kagome. The girl he had thought to be his future wife… What did she see in Inuyasha, anyway? Kouga tossed and turned as he involuntarily contemplated this.

‘She takes all of his crap with a smile,’ Kouga thought to himself, ‘She deserves to be treated like a Hime, but Inuyasha only degrades her and calls her names. Why doesn’t she see in me like she does in him?’

Kouga wanted nothing more than to be Kagome’s protector. He wanted her, when she felt scared, to run into his arms like she had done with Inuyasha earlier. How could he prove himself to Kagome? How could he win her over?

‘Maybe I’m too aggressive for her.’ Kouga realized, ‘Perhaps, I should just talk to her, and allow her to get to know me. I want our relationship to move beyond politeness. I want Kagome to know who I am, just as I want to know her…’

A smile came across Kouga’s face as he stared up at the ceiling. ‘Yes.’ He decided, ‘I know what I can do.’
