Kagome's Will

Chapter Ten

Finding Out

Sesshomaru held on to his daughter as she cried into his chest, gently stroking her head. His relief evident that nothing was wrong with his daughter, but again that scent- it was thick and it was so fresh. He knew something was indeed really wrong and he needed to know why.

“Rin, where is she?” he asked flatly.

“Daddy?” She looked up at him with tears falling down her face.

“Where is Kagome?”

“How did you know it was Kagome daddy? Did mom tell you?”

“No Rin, where is she?”

“I don't know. They won't tell us because we're not family.”

“What happened? Her scent is-different.”

“I can explain that, sir.” Sango offered walking up. She gave her friend a weak smile.

“Then explain.”

Sango took a deep breath.

“Well, you know that InuYasha took Kagome as his mate, right?” Sesshomaru nodded. “Okay, well what you didn't know was the specifics of their relationship.”

* Flashback *

It had been two days after InuYasha had left for training to take over a position in his fathers company. Kagome, Sango, and Rin were all in Sango's room going over their relationships. Though Rin was younger, the two older girls were always interested in finding out how far she and Kohaku were taking their relationship. However, today's topic wasn't on Rin and Kohaku or Sango and Miroku. It was on the mark on Kagome's left shoulder.

“What is that?” Sango asked fingering the small wound.

“Hmm? Oh that? Uh. I-I don't know.”

“Uh-huh. Right. Well if you don't know, I'll be more than happy to tell you.” Rin said mischievously.

“That's ok Rin, I know what it is.”

“So do I.” Sango said with a smirk. “InuYasha took you as his mate!”

“SHHHH! Sango, we don't want anyone to know until he takes over the company his father left him.”

“Why?”

“I don't know, InuYasha said it would be better for us to announce it after wards. I guess it has to do with the timing.”

“Wow, so you're not a virgin anymore, right?” Rin asked innocently.

“RIN!” the two girls screamed.

A couple weeks later…

Sango and Kagome had had a rough day in school and were now talking eagerly about when it was all over. Sango invited Kagome to stay the night, and since Kagome's father was out of town, she agreed. That night, however, Kagome was restless. She couldn't sleep. Something was wrong; her marked pulsated once as she touched it. It seemed to burn her fingertips. Something was going on, InuYasha was involved. She wanted to know he was all right. She also knew that he would be home the next day. So she tried to sleep as best she could. As sleep finally took over, a voice, filled with hatred called to her. It said one word.

“Mine?” Sango asked with a questioning look? “Mine? Strange.”

“Yeah, creepy huh?”

“Did you recognize the voice?”

“No, Sango. If I did, I wouldn't be scared out of my wits, no would I?”

“No, but how did it sound? Was it calm and quiet or was it brash and evil?”

“Brash and evil would be a better description of it. Like that of a demon.”

“Kagome, do you know any demons that you might have crossed? Maybe some that know of your mating with InuYasha?”

“What? No. Sesshomaru gave me the talisman and I haven't taken it off. It proved itself the other day when Kouga took me into his arms. He didn't sense anything different at all! As far as I know, no one but you and Rin.”

“And Miroku.”

“What? Why does he know?”

“InuYasha was angry because Miroku wouldn't shut up about how pretty you were and that you were wasting you time on him because he didn't love you. I guess InuYasha spit it out. It shocked the hell out of Miroku; he was serious about what he was saying. InuYasha said the look on his face was priceless.”

“I'll bet.” Kagome mumbled.

“Don't worry. Miroku won't tell.”

“I know I just don't want anyone else to know. I kind of think Rin won't be able to handle the secret though. I just hope she doesn't tell Sesshomaru.”

“Don't you think he'll find out?”

“Why would he?”

“Kagome, as InuYasha's scent resides in your body, your scent also is with in him.”

“Oy let me guess. The blood thing right?”

“Yeah. You didn't think it worked both ways?” Kagome moaned.

“No, but I should've known.”

“Has he been around Sesshomaru since you guys-um-did it?”

“I don't think so. Sesshomaru was out of town, and InuYasha left before Sesshomaru got back.”

“Do you think Kagura knows?”

“Why would she?”

“Well for one, she is a demon as well. Two, Rin.”

“I don't think Kagura's nose is quite like Sesshomaru's or InuYasha's, and if Rin tells, then Kagura will keep it a secret for a while, or until she think he'll figure it out on his own.”

* End Flashback*

Sango looked a Sesshomaru, hoping to find some sort of expression.

“What you tell me I already knew. InuYasha had said as much. I agreed with him.”

“Yeah, but. Kagome's birthday was a couple days after he got back. A month and half after that night, the news of Kikyo broke and-.”

* Flashback *

Sango and Kagome were in Sango's kitchen, talking about her birthday and the night of her birthday.

“He said that he loved me and only me. That he could never be with another. It was so romantic. At the same time, it was strange.” Sango looked over her coffee cup as she took a sip.

“Strange? Strange how?”

“It was kind of like he was trying to reassure me.” A knock on Sango's door pulled the girls from their conversation. Sango left and returned with the two boys, who both looked sullen.

“Hi guys, what's up?”

“Sango, I need your help please.”

“With what Miroku?”

“Um, just come with me, I'll show you.” Sango followed Miroku out the door. Kagome got up and cleaned the table as InuYasha sat down.”

Miroku made it look like they had walked out then placed his fingers on Sango's lips and his own, signaling for her to be silent. He then crept to the kitchen door and sat, Sango did the same.

“Kagome, sit down. We need to talk.” Kagome stopped what she was doing to look at him. Those words were something no one wants to hear when they come from the mouth of the one they love. Kagome nodded, never taking her gaze from InuYasha's face, as it stared at the table.

`He looks sad, almost shamed.' Sango thought.

“Kagome, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.” He finally looked up at her. What she saw frightened her. She watched as tears appeared in his eyes.

“InuYasha? InuYasha, what's wrong?” She asked going to him and kneeling before him. She took his hand in hers and caressed it gently. “What happened?”

“Kagome, I have to break my vow to you.” Kagome nearly fell over, but somehow maintained a caring expression.

“Why InuYasha? What has happened?” she whispered, not sure if she wanted the answer.

“Kagome, while I was gone, did you-feel anything?” Kagome thought about the night she was restless and how her mark had felt.

“Yes, but my fears were put to rest when you came home. I knew you were all right, and that's all that matters. Why? What happened?"

“Kagome, I can't. I can't stay with you because of my own stupidity.” Again he looked away. “While I was gone, something happened. I got real drunk with a couple of the guys from my father's company. Then Kikyo showed up. Then I passed out, I woke up the next morning- with Kikyo.” Kagome took her hand away from InuYasha's. He looked at her with a sad face, but nothing compared to her pained expression.

“Kagome, please say something.” Kagome sat on the floor, a bewildered look on her face as she tried to sort out what he just said.

“What do you want me to say, InuYasha?”

“Well, I haven't exactly told you everything.”

“You haven't?”

“No, Kikyo is pregnant.”

Kagome felt her stomach lurch as he continued.

“I-I have to marry her, to save her honor and the honor of her family. As well as my own.”

Kagome was hurting so bad, Sango knew. She felt hurt by InuYasha's words. She knew Kagome was struggling to find something to say.

“Why? How could you InuYasha?”

“Kagome, I don't remember anything. I was drunk. Please, understand I wasn't myself. I don't remember do anything with Kikyo, just waking up next to her. Now, she's pregnant.”

Kagome stood. Shaking with pent up emotion, she walked out the back door to the porch and took in the fresh air. It didn't help; she ran to the bathroom and threw up. Her stomach in knots, she got up from the toilet and was met with InuYasha's sad amber gaze. He reached out to her, but she stepped back.

“How do we reverse this, InuYasha?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, how do we-.” She swallowed hard, trying not to cry. “How do we un-mate?”

InuYasha looked hurt, but shook the expression from his face letting reality sink in.

“I don't think we can. I know that I don't touch you, our marks will fade.”

“InuYasha, the mark I can live with.” She bit out. “You scent is all over me, will that fade with the mark?” InuYasha looked at her and nodded.

“As far as I know, it should be gone in a couple of years.”

“A COUPLE OF YEARS?”

InuYasha looked at Kagome with an apologetic look. Kagome's tears flowed freely now. She was losing the one man she loved, and on top of that she couldn't try to date for a couple years, unless her date was human.

“It doesn't matter. I'll get over it.” She said as she pushed past him trying to get out the door. She was stopped when he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his chest. She was surprised when she felt his lips meet hers in a passionate grace. She pulled away breaking the contact between them.

“Don't do that. You can't do that.”

“Kagome, you are my mate. I love you and only you.”

“No, I release you from your promise to me. I am no longer your mate.” With that she walked down the hallway and out of Sango's house.

Two weeks later…

Kagome and Sango were shopping with Rin, Kohaku and Shippo. The mall was crowded, as summer had begun. Kagome, Sango and Miroku had graduated. InuYasha however, had not participated in the ceremony. InuYasha had his sent to him. He hadn't spoke to any of them since the day he broke the new to Kagome. Sango knew it was better this way.

Sango and Kagome now were looking forward to entering college together, and as they went through the different department stores, they choose out different outfits that were `college acceptable. They were all laughing and joking as they walked the mall. However, as they passed the Baby Gap Sango noticed her friend's expression change.

She watched Kagome look at the clothing in the window and turn away shaking her head.

“Kagome?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you all right?” Sango asked nodding her head towards the department store window. Kagome smiled.

“Yeah, just thinking. That's all.”

“Let's get something to eat.” Rin said quickly heading to the food court with Shippo and Kohaku. Sango and Kagome followed. As they neared the food court, the different smells flooded their senses. Kagome suddenly stopped, held her stomach and the dashed off in a different direction. Sango watched her friend as she gave some money to the others and quickly followed her to the restroom.

“Kagome? Kagome are you all right?”

“I'm fine Sango, I just got kind of dizzy and it made me queasy.”

“Are you sure? Do want anything?”

“I think I'll get a milkshake later. Right now, I want to hit one last department store.” Kagome smiled as walked out of the bathroom stall. “Don't worry, lets go!”

Sango followed Kagome closely for a while; unsure of why her friend became ill. She thought about it as Kagome mindlessly chattered about different articles of clothing,

`She got sick after she went by the baby store. I wonder if she still worries about InuYasha. I hope she isn't making herself sick over him.'

“Sango? Did you hear me?” Sango snapped her head up to meet the gaze of her friend.

“No, sorry.” Kagome sighed.

“It's all right. Come on, let' go try these on.” Sango nodded. She soon forgot her worries as she tried on different outfits with Kagome. They were talking about Rin and Kohaku when Kagome suddenly became quiet.

“Kagome, you ok?”

“Sango?” The tone in Kagome's voice made Sango open her door.

“Kagome?”

“Sango, come in here hurry!”

Sango entered her friend's dressing room and found her sitting on the chair in the corner, holding her stomach. Kagome looked at her with a scared expression.

“Sango, feel.” She whispered. Sango walked over to her friend, put her hand on her stomach and waited. She was surprised to feel a small flutter under her hand. Sango looked at Kagome.

“Kagome.” Sango watched as her friend's expression of fear turned into horror.

“NO! It can't be! We were so careful!”

“Come on Kags, let' s go. I know how to get an idea.”

“But it all fits Sango. The nausea, the cravings, the weight gain and I know I'm late as far as my cycle, I just didn't think anything of since I missed it before I was with InuYasha.”

“Kagome, you need to know for sure. Because if you are- then you are going to need to make sure that talisman can protect your unborn child as well. Since InuYasha can't.”

“No, he can't know about this.”

“But Kagome he is-.”

“He has made his choice, Sango.”

“What if your father finds out? Then what?”

“He won't. He's not a demon so he won't be able to smell me, besides the talisman should protect me from those who can. Anyway, I'll do some research and try to see if the talisman can hide my form from everyone.”

“Well, lets find out if your pregnant first.”

“Right.”

Later that day…

Sango and Kagome had stopped on the way back to Sango's house to buy a at home pregnancy test. The two girls then dropped the others off at an arcade, and went home. Sango waited for Kagome to prepare and perform the test. As she came out, Sango waited for her to say something.

“A plus sign is pregnant, a negative is not pregnant.”

“And?”

“It's got a minute left. Oh Sango, I scared!”

“I know.” Sango said as she hugged her friend. Then the timer in the bathroom went off and the two girls looked at each other.

* End flashback *

“Well, the pregnancy test was a plus. She was pregnant.”

Sesshomaru said nothing. He looked at the three faces before him; Rin's who had tears coming down her face was the only one looking at him.

“That would explain why her scent is still strong with his, but what happened to her. I can smell her blood and it is thick.”

“Her father found out about the child.” Said an older voice from behind. They all looked to see Myoga standing behind them with a large folder under one arm and a briefcase.

“He beat her until she couldn't move. Then he removed the fetus from its mother's womb. At least, that's what they're saying.”

“Myoga.”

“Master Sesshomaru.”

“You have the information I requested?”

“Yes sir.”

He handed the folder to Sesshomaru and took out his briefcase and went through it. He took out an envelope and handed it to Sesshomaru as well.

“This is what took place at the Higurashi shrine last night.”

Sesshomaru took the envelope and opened it. What he pulled from the envelope was a police report, witness' statement and pictures of the crime scene. Sesshomaru himself was disgusted, yet his face remained emotionless.

“Do we know what's going on with her or the child?”

“InuYasha! We are going to be late!” Kikyo called from the front door. Today was the day they found out what their baby was going to be. Kikyo was excited, but her heart sank as InuYasha came down the stairs.

“I'm coming Kikyo.” He said nothing all the way to the doctor's office. He watched in silence as the nurse handed Kikyo a gown. He waited patiently as she changed and followed silently as they were led to an examination room. After the nurse left Kikyo decided she couldn't take another minute of his silence.

“Oh, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD INUYASHA! SAY SOMETHING!” she screamed throwing InuYasha off balance.

“WHAT ARE YOU YELLING FOR BITCH?”

“You could at least pretend to be interested in finding out what the baby is.”

“I thought we agreed it was going to be a surprise? Why are we doing this now that it's almost here?

“I can't stand waiting anymore. I need to know what to expect!”

“Fine then, what'll you do when you find out?”

“Plan for what we know.” They said nothing else as the doctor entered the room.

“Mr. and Mrs. Taisho. Well, looks like we are going to find out what the baby's sex is?”

“Yes.” The two said in unison.

“Ok, lets get started shall we?” InuYasha watched as the doctor examined Kikyo's large belly. Then as he took out the ultrasound wand, covered it and Kikyo's belly a jelly. To InuYasha's surprise, he heard the heartbeat. But then, he heard two heartbeats. `No way' he thought

“Well, congratulations. Twin girls!!”

“WHAT?” Kikyo exclaimed, “Are you sure?”

“As sure as my name is-.”

“Twins.” InuYasha said quietly. “Girls.” Kikyo looked at InuYasha as he watched the monitor. `He's thinking of Kagome.'

“InuYasha?” He snapped his head and looked at her. Kikyo just shook her head.

“Never mind. Lets go.”
