Kagome's Will
Chapter Sixteen
Kikyo and Kagome
Kikyo sat down. Shock didn't even describe what she felt. First, she thought she had slept with InuYasha, Kagome's mate. Then she found out she was pregnant, with whom she thought to be InuYasha's child. Thus, taking InuYasha from her. Now, she learns that Kagome had kept her pregnancy a secret, even from InuYasha. To protect him. To protect both of them. She struggled to rise, as her protruding belly made it difficult.
“Take me to her. I need to see her.”
Sango looked at Kikyo, then at Mrs. Higurashi who's sobbing had turned to muffled crying. Mrs. Higurashi nodded.
“Fine. Follow me.”
Kikyo followed Sango down the hall past several other rooms that held death within their boundaries. When she entered Kagome's room, she knew something was wrong. She felt a presence that she herself rejected and she knew Kagome rejected it as well.
“Leave, I need to speak to Kagome.”
“No.”
“I need to talk to her, seek her.”
“Do it then.” Miroku said as he came in. “I will remain here to ensure you come out safely. Sango, Mrs. H needs to be comforted.” Sango nodded and left.
“What do you intend to do Kikyo?”
“I intend to find out if her spirit is still here, or if her shell just remains.”
“How can you tell?”
“Can you not feel a foreboding energy?”
“Yes, but that could be any thing.”
“No. It is one that I have experienced in the past. I know Kagome has known this presence as well.”
“Why do you want to help her?”
Kikyo looked at Kagome.
“This girl has been through a lot. She fell in love, only to have that love challenged and removed. She never let it go to her heart though. I know that InuYasha choose her as his mate. I knew this because he has refused to touch me, even now that we are married. InuYasha loves Kagome. He only married me to save my honor.”
“So, you're helping Kagome because she has never taken anything to heart?”
“No, I learned something the other day. I want to give her InuYasha back.”
“What?”
“The child I carry is human.”
“So?”
“Well, half demons can only impregnate their females on given nights. The full moon, and the new moon. It was neither night that I conceived.”
“So, the child you carry-.”
“It isn't the child of InuYasha Taisho.”
“Kikyo, that means.”
“Yes. Rape isn't something one should forget. I didn't know, otherwise I would've never dragged InuYasha into this. Nor would I have hurt Kagome, taking away her love. Now I fear, I've caused this pain and suffering to come upon her.” With that Kikyo place her index and middle finger in the center of Kagome's forehead and held onto one of the girls cold hands. Kikyo soon fell into a trance, losing all senses as she entered Kagome's mind.
Kikyo opened her eyes. What she saw was beautiful. There was a field with an array of wildflowers, grasses and plants that blew gently with the wind surrounded by a deep forest. She looked around for the person that she came to find. When she did find Kagome, she found the girl huddled against the lip of an old well. As she approached Kagome, Kikyo looked at her. Kagome's skin was pale and kind of transparent. As Kikyo knelt next the girl, she waited for a response. Nothing.
“Kagome?” She watched as Kagome looked up at her, apparently coming out of a trance of her own.
“Kikyo?” Kagome said weakly. “What are you doing here?”
“Kagome, why are you here?”
“Kikyo, you are still with child, you shouldn't be here its dangerous!”
“Kagome, tell me why you are here and not with your son!” This made Kagome begin to cry.
“Kikyo, how did you find out?”
“Kagome, that doesn't matter. What does matter is he needs his mother alive. Not giving up her life to save him.”
“You don't understand. Kikyo, go back. Go back and be with InuYasha. It's too late for me. Go back and raise your children.”
“Kagome, I am not staying with InuYasha.”
“What? Why?”
“For one, I found out the truth. That this pregnancy was no more than a distraction. Something to keep me from destroying the one thing that could keep me from advancing.”
“I don't understand Kikyo. You've loved InuYasha ever since middle school. How can you say that the child is just a distraction?"
“It doesn't belong to InuYasha. It was all a set up, to make us think that we had one something. I had in fact been raped. This child belongs to a human.”
“No, InuYasha would've been able to tell. His scent resides with in you. He would've been able to tell.”
“He never put it together, and I didn't know that he could only impregnate on certain nights.”
“The night of the full moon and New moon.”
“Neither of which happened to be the night I conceived.”
“Oh Kikyo.”
Just then, a sinister wind picked up and a dark figure appeared at the edge of the forest. Kagome stood and blocked Kikyo from this figures view.
“Go away!”
“Kagome who is he?”
“It's Naraku.”
“Naraku?”
“Kikyo, what are you doing here? Are you not the reason Kagome lost InuYasha?”
“No, I'm not. You are.”
“You are mistaken, I am not the one who told InuYasha that you were carrying his child. When in fact you carry the child of a petty thief.”
“It matters not, Naraku. What are you doing here?”
“No, Kikyo. What are you doing here?” He asked as he walked towards the two women.
“Leave Naraku, Kikyo has done nothing. Let her be.” Kagome said in a defensive tone.
“No Kagome, I can't. Now she knows my secret. She must die.” Kagome once again stood in front of Kikyo.
“Kikyo you must leave.”
“No Kagome, I will stay and fight.”
“No! Please, go back. Tell InuYasha what you learned. He may be mad at first, but tell him-. Tell him I love him and that I'm sorry.”
“No Kagome, you will tell him yourself.” Kagome turned to Kikyo.
“Kikyo, leave. He binds me here, if I give myself to him the Shikon jewel within my body will be tainted, but I will live. Then I'd be his forever. If I use the jewel to purify him, I will live, but my child will die.”
“How do you expect to win?” Kagome looked over her shoulder and smiled sadly.
“I don't.”
“Kagome.”
“ I will win over Naraku, but my son will die without his father. Please, tell InuYasha for me.” Kagome turned back and looked at Naraku. “My will to live is strong. My life force has enough to keep me going for a while longer. Please Kikyo. Keep them safe. Keep both InuYasha and our son safe.”
“Kagome, the child is going to live. They have given him a clean bill of health. It is you they worry about.”
“I grow weary of this.” Naraku said as he lunged for them. As he did, Kagome placed her palm on Kikyo's belly, and her hand on her chest. “Go back and live Kikyo.” With a flash, the last thing she saw was Naraku lunge for them as she woke up shaking still holding onto the lifeless hand.
“Kikyo? Are you all right? Do you need me to call a doctor?”
“No, you need to get InuYasha here. He is the only one that can save her.”
“Why? What happened?”
“She is scared. Not for herself but for her son, InuYasha, me. She as much as told me to take him as my own.
“Why?”
“She is fighting a losing battle. InuYasha is the only one who can save her.” She got up and left. She knew where InuYasha was. She was going to tell him. He was Kagome's only hope.
