A/N: This is a poor excuse for a chapter, but it is one. Here is your update, roughly a month after August 6th, 2003 as promised. Also, this does not follow the original `Inuyasha' story whatsoever. I had considered it for a while, but no, that would ruin many of my future plans for this fic.

"Kitsune"

Kagome stopped about a meter in front of the two Ookami youkai. A sudden jolt of fear shot up her spine when they turned to look at her, their crimson hued eyes holding a homicidal intent. But, unfortunately, she did not know what this glint in their eyes meant and she stood her ground, forgetting her previous fears. Though it was unseen, Kagome glared daggers at them both.

The young child, her age of around six or perhaps seven, looked up at her heroine. Her pale features were bruised and scraped but she still looked hopeful.

The two Ookami youkai completely averted their attention to the young woman that stood in front of them. She was a fool. A light-boned, petite woman should not take on two men at least twice her size, and just to save a pathetic whelp.

"Let's say you forget about the kid and come with us, ne? We'll have lots of… fun," The taller of the two said slyly, sounding more like a kitsune than a wolf. Before Kagome could blink he had her pinned against the wall, a mischievous and slightly devilish look plastered to his face.

The other youkai walked up to them and traced a clawed finger along her jaw line slowly, the pressure just barely light enough so it wouldn't draw blood. Kagome tried to move her head out of reach to the youkai, but her efforts didn't do much.

Kagome heard a loud grunt as the youkai that had been touching her face was suddenly flung out of the way by something, distracting the youkai that was holding her. She pushed him out of the way and ran farther down a random ally. She did not do this because she was afraid. Kagome wanted to youkai to chase her; it would get him away from the little girl. Hopefully, whoever had flung the other youkai was not interested in the child either.

To her luck the youkai did follow her. She ran as fast as her inexperienced legs would carry her which, unfortunately, was not nearly fast enough. The Ookami youkai was gaining on her very quickly, and was now getting aggravated with her. That further motivated him to catch her.

She stopped abruptly; she had no choice but to. The alley that she had been using as an escape route came to a dead-end: a solid brick wall that belonged to a four-story high building. Kagome backed into a corner and watched the youkai stalk toward her. He had slowed down at a casual walk now, closing in on her like predator and prey. Making the anticipation get to her more than what was going to come after he actually reached her.

Kagome swallowed. A strange feeling began to come over her; she felt shaky and nervous and a hollow sensation shot through her whole body. It made her wish she could be somewhere else, anywhere but where she was. Something triggered in her mind, telling her the definition of such an emotion. Fear.

It was then that the Ookami youkai made his move since he could now smell that she was truly afraid of him. Kagome cowered down, trying to get as far away as she could from him. She didn't like this new feeling that had overcome her, not one bit. Her mouth went dry and her eyes grew wide, making her pupils barely visible. She extended her right arm out in front of her with hand flat and stretched out, it was a poor attempt in being defensive but she was desperate.

Sesshomaru watched Kagome, his golden orbs wide. A bluish-white light emitted from the girl's hand, successfully forcing her pursuer to the other side of the alley. Seconds later the light surrounded the youkai and it split into little pieces and disappeared along with the light. His graze trailed back to Kagome, who was breathing heavily and staring at place where to youkai had just been in disbelief.

She glanced over at him, her hazel eyes adoring the classic terrified look. Kagome righted herself and stood up fully, she had been so scrunched up against the wall her muscles were tensed up in that position making it difficult to move. She ran over to Sesshomaru despite her inability to move without excessive stiffness. Kagome flung her arms behind him and pulled herself close to his chest.

Sesshomaru looked down at her, trying to make sense of it all. He knew that she was scared, he could still smell her fear lingering around, but he hadn't expected her to find her security with him. For the sake of humoring her he wrapped his arms around her, she seemed comforted with this. He expected her to cry but the salty-wet smell never came to his nostrils, she merely nuzzled her face to his chest and held him a bit tighter.

Kagome wasn't sure either whys she suddenly ran to Sesshomaru to comfort her. Perhaps it was just a feminine reaction to a frightening situation. To go to the nearest male she could trust so he could tell her everything was going to be fine. But, the Ookami youkai that had been chasing her seemed like nothing now; it was what she had done to get rid of him that scared her the most. What had she done with her hand? Could everyone do what she had just done? Or was it some unique skill that only she possessed? All these questions raced through her mind like bullets being fired from a rifle, but only one question she actually managed to voice: "What happened to the little girl?"

"She ran away after the other guy was unconscious," Sesshomaru answered, his voice back its usual stoic tone. He stroked her hair absently, most probably out of habit from previous lovers he had had. "Kagome?"

"Hai?" she replied pulling away from her tight grasp on him a little.

"Don't tell anyone about what you did to that Ookami youkai, ok?" he looked down at her again.

"Why, Sesshomaru-san? Did I do something wrong?" She asked, confused.

"You didn't do anything wrong, I just don't want anyone else to know just yet," he softened his voice a little, to make it sound kind and convincing to a naïve girl like her.

"Hai," Kagome smiled a little, "Like a secret?"

"Exactly like a secret," Sesshomaru couldn't help but to smirk slightly. If his memory was correct, he could easily make him self a very wealthy man, much more so that he was now, with the knowledge of Kagome's little ability.

Sesshomaru sat at his desk in his room, staring blankly at the hologram image that was his computer screen. He used a little black stick-looking object (A/N: like on hand-held's and palm-pilots) to scroll down to read more of the page he was looking at. So far, the damned internet was getting him nowhere and it was begging to aggravate him. There was a link at the bottom of the page that read: `Have a look at my friend's site, CLICK HERE.' For the hell of it he touched the link with the `stick'.

It brought him to a black page with white text, at the top it read: `Miko's, information from the 1500's up to the 2200's.' He started to read the contents of the site, wondering if it was just another crap place like all the other site's he'd been to that night.

"Miko… by definition this means `priestess', a beautiful Human maiden with the ability to purify tainted people or objects, she also has many other skills. Among the Youkai, they were greatly feared because of their purification ability. They were known to kill some of the most powerful Youkai using this. Due to that fact, Youkai and Oni used extreme caution around Miko's.

Miko's were few and far between after the Sengoku Jidai, but they were also part of the main reason Humans no longer live today. It was fear in the Youkai that sparked the flame for the thirty-two-year-long war against the Humans and Youkai that resulted in the extinction of Homosapiens-"

Sesshomaru was cut off from his reading by a little flashing light at the bottom right of his hologram screen, indicating a vid-call. He tapped the flashing light a familiar face popped up on the screen.

"Whoa, I'm surprised. I didn't think I'd reach you at this hour, it's nearly 3:30am," the person on the screen looked down at his watch then back at the screen again.

"What do you want?" Sesshomaru asked, not holding back any annoyance in his tone of voice.

"I heard you were trying to get a hold of Onigumo earlier today," the person paused, "I'm just curious to know why, I know you don't like that area of town very much."

"I needed to know if he could somehow assist me and a few…companions… to get to the colonies," the white-haired Inu youkai answered, finding no point in trying to avoid the question.

"Ah, I see," the fire-red haired Kistune answered, his green eyes glinting, "I believe I can help you with that…"

A/N: Many people wanted Kagome to beat up the two Ookami youkai by herself, but I could not comply with this. It would be: 1) out of character for Kagome 2) a disturbance in how I could bring in her Miko powers and 3) It would ruin a semi-fluff moment between Sesshomaru and Kagome. And, the little girl Kagome saved was supposed to be Rin, but I didn't think it was too necessary to elaborate on her appearance.

Next Chapter: "Wires" (chapter name pending, it could change)
