Inu no Taisho’s castle nearly 800 years ago
“This Sesshomaru protects no one” a 5 year old Sesshomaru told his father. His father the Great Inu no Taisho protector of the weak and innocent, protector of humans. Sesshomaru could not believe that his father asked him whom he protected. It was not the last time his father was going to ask this of him. Sesshomaru feared that protecting someone was a sign of weakness. If your enemies learned that you cared enough to protect someone, they would use it against you. Inu no Taisho shook his head sadly and went to train with his three swords. While leaving his small son to watch him.
A hundred and fifty so years later on the western coast of Japan
Standing on the bank of the shore, blood dripping from multiple wounds caused by a fight with Ryukotsusei, the Great Dog Demon prepared to leave and save his wife, Izayoi, and unborn son, Inuyasha.
“Sesshomaru, who do you protect?”
Sesshomaru thought back to the last time, which his father posed to him whom he protected. It angered him when his father asked this question. His father had first asked this when he was about 5 years old, now he was a little over 150 years old. When he and the person he loved the most needed protection his father was not there. Sesshomaru was only 8 years old at the time. Sesshomaru had been practicing with his energy whip and when retracting it had an accident and wrapped the whip around him. The burns he had received would take days to heal but they would heal. However, his heart would take much longer to heal, as the years went by ice built up around his heart and was angered that his father was not there to protect his mother. The Inu no Taisho was off defending the border villages against lesser demons when a rival for the western lands came and attacked the castle. Sesshomaru mother had fought for her injured son and her own life. In the end, she had managed to kill all the demons attacking the castle, but it cost her life. His father had shown up hours after the battle, luckily Tenseiga was able to restore her life but death had destroyed his parents mating bond. Over the coming weeks they decided to not re-mate and his mother moved to the castle in the clouds. Snapping him out of his thoughts his father again asked him whom he protected.
“Protect?” asked Sesshomaru “I, Sesshomaru, protect no one. I have no need of such,” said Sesshomaru “I want Supreme Conquest”
As he said this, his father transformed into his animal form running for Izayoi. While he had been fighting Ryukotsusei, Izayoi’s father had sent Takemaru to bring her back to them. He thought he was saving Izayoi from the demon, no knowing that they had fallen in love and were expecting a child. Izayoi lay alone with no one to tend her as she labored through the birth of her precious child. She knew that mate was on his way, she could feel him through their bond, when Takemaru entered the room she begged him to gather everyone and leave. She could feel that he was injured and with herself in labor he would be more like a wild animal then a man. Takemaru angered that Izayoi had rejected him refused to leave and told her that he would kill the monster she had trapped by. Izayoi yelled and said it was not so that she loved him and had married him, Takemaru in his anger slew Izayoi for mating with a demon and decided to burn the castle. Just then Inu no Taisho arrived at the mansion of Izayoi’s family. He battled his way into the mansion; determined to save Izayoi but found her already slain. Using Tenseiga he revived her and commanded, “Izayoi, you must live. Live long. The child’s name is Inuyasha.” He then fought Takemaru to both of their deaths.
For years Sesshomaru followed the lives of Izayoi and Inuyasha, anger eating at him that his father gave his life for them, but not for his mother. After Izayoi died, Sesshomaru followed Inuyasha killing or attacking the demons and humans that threatened him. Though he never let Inuyasha know he was there. No he was not protecting Inuyasha; Inuyasha’s life was his to depose of. First, he had to find out where the other two swords were. He had Tenseiga, but he wanted the swords of power. So instead, he had to fight for himself without a sword.
When Inuyasha reached about 100 years old Sesshomaru stopped following him, Inuyasha could now fight and defend himself. Besides, he did not have the swords on him. Sesshomaru decided to look elsewhere. After 60 more years, the panther clan and the dog clans began fighting. Sesshomaru needed the swords he could not let the cats take what his father had fought for, that he had claimed. Sesshomaru again sought out Inuyasha, but to learn that he had been pinned to a tree by a priestess 10 years ago and was sealed forever since the priestess had died. To Sesshomaru, the half-breed was dead.
