Chapter 21: Known Last

^^^

Somewhere in the forest

"Sister, what do you think has happened to Naraku?" The albino demon Kanna asks while walking with her sister, looking for answers as to why they are suddenly in control of themselves.

"I do not know, nor do I care, now that we have live our own lives, we are free to do what we wish." Kagura answers her sister, 'But what to do?'

The moon hanging in the heavens, they walk, neither knowing what to do, the path of wandering the only path worth taking.

Memories

Ever since Kagura felt the pain inflicted by a recent demon attack, she was sure something had happened.

She flew as quickly back to the palace to find no one present but Kanna. She knew there was a battle, blood was spilt, both of there creator and of the shard hunting pack.

But the form of Naraku was missing, 'Surly there would have been a body?'

"Come Kanna, we leave now." They flew on Kagura's feather, in search of a new life.

It has been three months since the night they left. All across Japan they searched for a place to feel like home, but everywhere they went, it felt out of place.

End Memories

It was all in the past. Everything that happened, every detail, slipped away in the sands of time, each wave like an eternity.

Kagome, like many a nights, was sitting up right in her bed, moon shown high in the sky.
'It has been three months since that nigh.' Looking over to her window, she gets up and walks over to stare at the moons rays. 'Why can I not get your face to leave me?'

A chilly wind blows from the north and she shivers from the cold. In the late October months, the world begins to prepare for winter. The last of the greenery begin to turn into a golden-red, the sign that winter is not too far.

Closing the matts that worked as a window to keep the wind from entering, Kagome turns to go back to bed.

"You do know Lady Kagome it is not healthy to be stressed for such a long time." Miroku walks into her bedroom, the rings of his staff jingling a soft, soothing pitch. "There was nothing you could have done to prevent the happening. Inuyasha would not wish for you too morn his passing for so long." He places a comforting hand on the younger girls shoulder to calm her.

Kagome drops her head, a small smile forms on her face. "He would probably start yelling at me to stop crying." A tear falls down her cheek, quickly wiping it away and laughs a tired laugh. 'That's Inuyasha for you, never one to see me cry.'

Miroku is happy that he was able to make Kagome laugh after her time of grief. "Come Kagome, it is late, and your should be in bed." Showing her to bed, he exits her room.

Getting comfortable, Kagome falls into a deep sleep, dreams of happiness of the past.

"So how was Kagome, Miroku?" Sango asks, seeing Miroku walking back down the hall to his bedroom.

"She seems to be getting better." Walking on, Sango follows, both going to there separate rooms to sleep.

Sesshoumaru was patrolling the halls, after what happened three months ago, he was on high alert to intruders. He listened to the taiji and monk speaking of Kagome, and hearing that she has finally began to recover, he let our a sigh knowing that he was alone and no one would see.

Waiting until the two were gone, he walks onward to Kagome's room.

Seeing her sleep was lifting, Sesshoumaru was angry that Kagome would not get over his brother, but seeing her sleep with a smile, was refreshing.

Morning

Kagome awoke with a cheerful face, with true happiness. Hearing the door slide open slowly, she saw a little peek coming from Shippo.

Seeing that she no longer felt bad, Shippo bounced excitedly into greet his 'mother.' "Kagome-mama! You awake!" Jumping straight to her chest, he cuddles Kagome as hard as his little hands can.

Laughing, she hugs Shippo just as hard, "It's nice to know I have something cuddly to wake up to." Smiling, she looks to the door and sees a shy Rin, putting Shippo on her lap, she opens her hands wide and waits for Rin to jump up and greet her with a hug.

Seeing her chance, Rin runs and both she and Shippo tickle Kagome into submission. "That's what you get for staying in your room Kagome!" Both kids say in unison making Kagome laugh harder, until she retaliates with her own torture of tickles.

With a shriek, both run from the terror known as Kagome, laughing while they run and Kagome chases them out. "Be there in a sec you two."

She slides her door close, pulls out her back pack, and gets a pair of jeans from the bottom, along with a long sleeved beige sweeter. 'Never thought I still had these, gee there wrinkled.' Laying the cloths on her bed, she presses hard on the bumps, straitening it out as much as possible. 'That'll do.' Changing, she leaves her room.

"I see that you are feeling better." Sesshoumaru's deep voice echos in her head.

Turning she acknowledges the Lord with a smile. With a nod of approval, he stares at her attire. "Where did you find such things to wear?" Raising an eyebrow slightly.

"Found them at the bottom of my bag." Narrowing his eyes, he lets it pass, he does not want to make her go back into a depression.

Both walk quietly over to the dining hall for breakfast, the silence a comfort to be around so early in the day.

Everyone was seated at there designated area, Sesshoumaru at the head of the table, Kagome to his right. Rin to his left, Sango by Kagome and Miroku by Sango. Shippo sat by Rin talking quickly and quietly.

Sango is relieved to see Kagome in a happier mood, but unfortunately, she may have to spoil such an occasion. Greeting her friend in a hug before they seat themselves, she decides to wait until after they ate to spoil her good mood.

As the servants bring the meals, Rin and Shippo have an eating contest to see who can finish there meal quicker.

"Rin! Shippo! Not so fast you may choke." Kagome laugh scolds when she sees how cute Shippo looks with his mouth covered in food while he smiles and a fang emerges from his crooked smile, and Rin beams with a noodle still in her mouth.

Shaking her head and giggling, she continues with her own meal, Sango and Miroku talking quickly to Kagome, but is interupted by Sesshoumaru.

"When do you intend to fuse the pieces of the jewel?" Looking at her with complete seriousness. The table quiets, listening in on her answer.

Taking a minute to think, Kagome looks around the table at the friends she calls family, when she lands on the demon lord, her eyes show nervousness being held in, and her posture is stiff. "I'm not sure, we do not know what will happen when the jewel is completed again, I don't think I'm ready to fully see the final results of all our hard work. To tell the truth, I'm scared that I'll be transported back to my time, or if the next time I cross the well, I won't be able to return." Looking away to her food, she returns eating.

On the inside Sesshoumaru is surprised, he did not think something like that would happen, but he doesn't show it. For him there are two possibilities on his part, one, she'll be gone and away from his mind once and for all, never to worry him again, or two, he'll be out of his mind wondering what would happen if she did leave? The one person he has grown to respect over the few months they had known each other, will be gone. Of course he respected her friends, they helped Kagome in many ways during the beginning of her journey, but what he feels for Kagome is more then just respect, dare he call her... a friend?

Being snapped out of his sumpter, he looks to the person who has called to him, "Yes Rin?"

Seeing her smile she give her irresistibly cute puppy eyes, of course, being a dog demon he has an immunity to the puppy-eyes, but for her amusement he goes along with her beg. "Rin was thinking... can Rin and Shippo play outside, Lord Sesshoumaru?"

Looking at her nearly empty plate, he returns his gaze to Rin, "Find Jaken and you may."

Laughing she drags an eager Shippo to find there guardian. Laughing and a squealing Jaken is heard down the hall.

Once the adults are finished, the servants clear the table. All leaving the room, Sesshoumaru goes to his study to work on his lands, Sango, Miroku fallow Kagome to look for the children.

Miroku digs into his robes and pulls out the bottle that holds the pieces of the shikon-no-tama.

Handing it over to Kagome, she looks at it with sorrow, but quickly turns to confusion, "Miroku, why do you still wear that glove and rosery?" Taking the jewels, she looks at them again an gives her full attention to the monk.

Looking at his hand also, he smiles, "Guess I've had it on for so long it kind of feels funny without it." Pulling off his glove, he shows Kagome his palm, in the middle is a circular scar where the wind-tunnel once resined. "Do not think after so many years something like this would not have happened," Putting it back on, Kagome looks bewildered, "were you expecting it to be completely healed?"

She nods slowly, "Actually I did."

Making it outside, they see Jaken being tortured by two Rins.

Running in circles Jaken screems, "If this is the punishment of the gods I am sorry for all that I have done you wrong! I beg for redemption!" Seeing his salvation he hides behind Kagome for a chance of peace.

"Ok you two, I think it's time to leave Jaken alone." Said toad looks to his savior with watery eyes. Picking up the Rin with a fluffy orange tail, she whispers into his ears, "At least for now."

Shippo pops back into his form and laughs at Kagome's wink.

Setting him back down, he runs to try and tackle Rin, but she runs and climbs a nearby tree.

Letting out a deep sigh, Kagome turns to see Miroku's hand moving to dangerous territory. '3... 2... 1...'

*SLAP*

"Hentai!" And there goes Sango to the north and a flying Miroku to the south.

Smiling at seeing her friends antics, she fallows Sango.

"Stupid hentai monk!" Is what Kagome hears as she nears the fuming Taiji.

Kagura and Kanna

The two sisters have been walking all night until they came upon a familiar tribe of wolf demons.

"Sister why have we come here?" Kanna turns to look at Kagura, mirror reflecting the morning rays.

"I know for a fact that Naraku never ordered me to bring back Koga's jewel shards imbedded in his legs, or the hanyou's group retrieved them. To repay for the deeds I have wronged the miko, I'm going to give her the jewel shards."

Wolf den

From a distance a flash is seen, Hokkaku stands from his post to get a better view of the horizon. Hearing a rustle from above him on the cliff, he looks up to see Ginta.

"Hey Ginta, did you see that shine?" Hokkaku turns back to the direction of the glare.

"Yeah..." Ginta jumps down from his perch and turns to face Hokkaku, "thing we should tell Koga?"

Shrugging his shoulders, Hokkaku says, "You go tell him, I'll wait here to see if something happens."

Nodding, Ginta runs off to tell his leader.

Hokkaku turns his head, before he can udder a word, he gets knocked out by a gust of wind.

With Koga

"Koga!" Said person turns his head to face his comrade, back facing him.

"What do you want Ginta?" Turning back straight, he leans his head on his fist, watching the newest pups, looking for any sign of future worriers in them. 'How did I get bored enough to watch over the pups?' Growling at any that get to feisty or come to close, they need to remember who the leader is.

"Koga, Hokkaku and I say a shine of light and we thought you might want to know about it." Panting slightly at his run, Hokkaku walks up to his leader.

"You sure it wasn't a shine of the water?" Getting up to stretch his tired limbs, he calls for a female wolf demon to watch over the wolf pups. Walking over to were Hokkaku came from, he works his shoulder from a cramp.

"Yes, it was in the grasses, the wind was blowing towards it, so we didn't get a sent of it." Quickly walking to keep up, he tells him of what they saw.

Once making it back to the waterfall, they stay shocked to see Hokkaku face down on the rocky ledge.

Jumping down quickly, both scurry to look after there fallen friend. Koga turns him face up, patting his cheek gently to wake him.

Scrunching his eyes before opening, Hokkaku jumps to a sitting position, breathing heavily, perspiration dripping down his cheek. Looking at his friends he says, "Koga! I know who it was that was hiding behind the grass. Kagura is here!"

"Sango wait up!" Turning, Sango sees Kagome trying to catch up to her.

Perfect timing, "Kagome, uh, we have to talk."

They make it to a front garden where they sit and relax under the shade of a tree, cool wind blows, wisping there hair to the air.

"Kagome, Miroku and I have been thinking, I think it's time that we go back to Kaede's village. I'm sure Kaede is worried about us and would like to know what happened..." Seeing that Kagome drops her head, Sango feels she may have opened old wounds.

"I don't think I'm ready to go back Sango. Kaede's village holds to many memories. I don't want to feel tempted to return home, either, just yet." Kagome looks up to Sango with a forced smile. Wiping away unshed tears, Kagome helps Sango up. "Come on, lets go back, Jaken may need another saving about now."

Walking closer to the castle doors, Miroku waits for the girls, staff jingling as he walks over to them. "Kagome, I think it would be wise to fuse the jewel," Looking over to Sango as if to say, 'have you told her?' she nods, he turns back to Kagome, "We feel that we have stayed to long in the company of Lord Sesshoumaru, the sooner the jewel is completed, we can see if there are any missing pieces, make a wish and destroy the jewel."

Kagome turns away to look at an interesting piece of grass. "I was thinking about that, how can we make a pure wish on the jewel, if I am gone or there are still missing pieces?" Looking over to her friends, she nods, "But your right, the sooner the better."

Koga

'Kagura! What the hell is she doing here?!' Growling he stands. "You two stay here, I do not want either of you to follow, she must still be after the jewel shards." Running at blinding speed, he searches for Kagura's sent.
