8: The Stranger in the Dark
22 2004
The wedding march played. The orchastra was hand picked by her father. Every 'suitable' musician in the land was sitting in the corner of the room, playing the march to her wedding. Oh, what an honor indeed. Kagome hid the anger in her heart and mind with a fake smile, trying not to look at anyone but the priest at the head of the church. Kagome caught a brief glance at Kouga. He was wearing a dark orange suit, with a yellow tie. 'Kay, thought this was a wedding not Halloween. Kagome mentally rolled her eyes. As though reading her thoughts, kind of, her father (who held her arm, leading her down the aisle), whispered into her ear "Kouga looks very handsome doesn't he" Kagome leaned toward her father and whispered back sarcastically "Oh yes Papa." he smiled jubulantly . . . missing the sarcasm.
Inuyasha sat in the back of the church next to Sango. Miroku was an usher who stood beside the door, near Inuyasha. They had long since passed them and Inuyasha didn't have to pretend to be picking up something anymore. He watched as the King handed his daughter to Kouga and took his place standing on Kagomes left side. Inuyasha sat down, as the rest of the guests did, and waited for his opening to do . . . something.
"Dear friends . . . family . . . strangers here for the food." the audience chuckled slightly. "We are here in the face of all the Kami to unite these two heirs and combine the countries. No more shall the East and West fight for control, because the love of these two wonderful people, will unite us all under one rule." The priest continued to drag on but Inuyasha stopped listening, instead trying to figure out a plan of action. When nothing came to him, he decided to give up. He had been in love before, that had failed too, so what was the point in trying again?
"I know what you are thinking Inuyasha." Miroku knelt down and whispered into his ear. "You can't give up. There has to be something we can do."
"There is nothing. It is over. I shouldn't have screwed up. I shouldn't have been so . . . me. It's all my fault and I can't fix it. It's too late."
"But -" Miroku tried to come up with a reason why Inuyasha shouldn't give up, but truthfully, nothing came to mind.
"Now, as I unite these two heirs, it is customary to ask if there is anyone who does not see these two heirs fit to be wed. If you have any objections . . speak now or forever hold your peace." there was a long drawn out silence in which people looked around the room, contemplating who would dare say that they didn't want the Prince and Princess to wed.
Inuyasha smiled broadly as he moved to stand up, but the more he tried the less confident he became. His smile slowly turned into a stoic look and he sat back down, his eyes never leaving the bride.
"Then, by the power of the law, I now pro- "
"Wait! I object." two voices stated in unison; a loud cummulative gasp followed the comment.
"Princess . . . Prince?"
"Yes. I object to my own wedding. I can't marry someone I do not love, I do not care if it will unite the East and the West. I will not be happy Father."
"And I cannot have my sister marrying someone who she is not happy to be with. It would not be right of me to allow my sister to be unhappy." Souta stated, stepping out from behind his Father.
"That is not the point." The King replied angrily.
"But it is to me Father." Kagome declared.
"Do not call me 'Father' for as of this moment, you are no daughter of mine."
Kagome felt tears in her eyes and the guests sucked in a breath at the harsh words from the King.
"Fine then. Have Souta marry Kouga for all the Fuck I care!" Kagome threw her flowers at her Father and walked back down the aisle away from her Fiance and every bad thing in her life.
Kagome reached the doors, the bright day light that had shown through out the land seemed magnifed, the temperature had gone up and the sun was brighter than she had ever seen it. The Princess sheilded her eyes from the sun and released a heavy sigh. She began walking up to her chambers, in hopes of reliving herself of the dispicable dress she was wearing. Jogging up the palace stairs was out of the question in such a gown, so she took to walking very lady like through the coridors and up the stone steps. Upon reaching her room she found the one thing she hadn't expected.
"Inuyasha?" she asked more than stated.
"I am glad you objected, I just didn't have the heart to ruin your life again."
"You didn't ruin my life. You just . . . hurt it."
"No. I hurt your heart, I ruined your life. Kouga knows, I know he does because he is a demon just as I am. All he has to do is detect my scent and I am dead. Fuck, I am already banished so what else could go wrong eh?"
"Inuyasha . . . "
"Look Kagome, sorry, Princess . . . I just wanted to say I apologize for what I did to you. I don't take it back, or regret it, I just apologize. I wish I could take back the horrible things I said to you, but I can't do that because the words have all ready left my big mouth. I don't regret sleeping with you, and I don't regret our time together, I just wish that we had more happy times ahead of us. I can see though, that my mistake has made that impossible." Inuyasha paused for a second, "And furthermore, you have a . . . what?"
"What?"
"Nothing. I am done now."
"No . . . say she has beautiful eyes."
"Inuyasha?" Kagome's confused expression became a look of annoyance as she walked over to the window to see Miroku hanging from the edge.
"Hey Kagome." he stated with a smile.
"Were you telling him what to say?"
"N . . . well yes."
"Thanks Miroku." Inuyasha rolled his eyes.
"What? I wasn't going to lie to my best friend in the whole world. Who is so sweet and forgiving."
"Oh shut up."
"Oh shut up." Kagome and Inuyasha looked at each other as they spoke the same words. They smiled to each other and began laughing. Miroku, still hanging for dear life outside the window, began chuckling as well, not really seeing all the humor.
"I am sorry Inuyasha."
"No, I am sorry Kagome. I was scared that I . . . well, that I was falling in love with you."
"You love me?"
"Yeah . . . I think I do." he admited to her, and to himself.
"I love you too Inuyasha!" Kagome jumped into Inuyasha's arms and he hugged her closely, loving the feel of her in his arms.
"Aww, I am glad everything is worked out. Now, would you be so kind as to let me back in."
Inuyasha set Kagome down and took her by the hand. "Why don't you get dressed and we can go for a walk."
"Okay." Kagome smiled in agreement.
"Uhh, guys. A little help. . . . Inuyasha . . . Princess!"
