Chapter 6

Inuyasha looked at Kagome and couldn’t bear to see her in this state. He knelt beside her. “Kagome…” He whispered tenderly in her ear. “I don’t know everything that’s happened to you…But I promise I will always protect you…” His amber eyes held compassion and concern. Sure, he may not have known Kagome for the longest of times, but he felt as though he had known her always.

“Inuyasha…” She whispered opening her eyes, “I’ve come to a conclusion…”

“Yeah Kagome?” He pushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. Everyone else was in the kitchen, dead quiet, listening intently.

“I know why everyone wants me dead.” She sat up and looked him right in the eyes. “I will tell you everything I know…” Thus, she told her tale.

“Every miko in my family has been given the responsibility of caring for the Shikon no Tama, or Jewel of Four Souls. The four souls described are from the Shinto philosophy of Naobi: Aramitama (Courage), Nigimitama (Friendship), Kushimitama (Wisdom) and Sakimitama (Love). When all united in one person, such as the jewels creator, Midoriko, they unite to form a powerful balance within the soul that can be used for good or evil. The jewel was created by the battle of the great miko, Midoriko, and a powerful youkai. After seven days and seven nights of fighting, Midoriko realized that she would be unable to fight off the youkai. And as she was drawn into the creature’s massive jaws, she seized the spirit of the youkai and bound it within her own with the last of her power, killing both of them and creating the Shikon Jewel, which burst from her chest. Within the jewel, her soul and the souls of the youkai she bound with it still battle on. The person who possesses the jewel influences the state of this battle.

“For centuries the jewel was controlled by various humans and demons until it fell into the hands of my ancestors. They alone took on the responsibility of caring for it. Which is why, today, it is my duty. When the miko before me died, I was but an infant. To protect the jewel my father had it put in my stomach. Once Naraku found this out, I’m supposing, that’s when he seduced my mother. That is why he is always slashing at my stomach. That stupid ass of a man, wants the jewel for evil. That’s what I have to keep from happening. But with someone out to kill me…I don’t know if I can do this.” Tears escaped down the poor girl‘s face.

Inuyasha was shocked, as was everyone in the kitchen. Kagome’s tears subsided. She looked down at her stomach and lifted her shirt. A circular glowing spot on her stomach. Her eyes blanked and she fell limp on the couch. The startled hanyou yelled for everyone to come quickly. He explained what had just happened.

He was determined to save Kagome. He wanted to make sure nothing bad ever happened to her. ‘She’s just too innocent. So many bad things have happened to her. Not anymore. Now…Now she has me…I can’t let him get her. I’ve lost too many people I love as it is, already. He can’t have Kagome too!’

A scream rang out in the air. A beautiful girl with Raven hair woke up in a place that was unfamiliar to her.

‘Where am I?’ She frantically looked at her surroundings. She was in a dank room with not even a window. There was a cot with a pillow and a blanket. There was a door. That’s all there really was. A speaker was also in the room, now that her eyes became more focused.

‘Why would someone put me in this room…what’s the speaker for?’ It was as if her mind had been read. A deep voice erupted from the speaker, filling the quiet room with the blaring voice of the man.

“Why, Kikyou…I see that you are awake. How do you like your new accommodations? Not that it matters really…Now…I need your help. You’re going to help me get Kagome. She is desperately important to me. Will you agree to help me?”

‘If I help to get that Kagome from Inuyasha, then I can have him all to myself.’ Kikyou smirked evilly and nodded her agreement. She realized whomever it was couldn’t see her nod, so she voiced a ‘yes’.

“Good…Now, you will be taken good care of here and will move up to better placements as long as you do as I wish. Very unlike my little Jisho, whom you will meet later on. That is all.” The voice ended, leaving the room once again to the eerie quietness, and left Kikyou to her own thoughts.

‘I cannot wait to destroy Kagome!!’ Kikyou evilly, laughing manically.
