Chapter Three: Dreams, and Sleepless Nights

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It may have been hours that she spent in her Mother's embrace, honestly, she didn't know. She thought that if she let it all out that she would feel better, she was wrong. She actually felt worse, she had the worst headache she had ever had in her life. She had cried so much, and she felt as if she was still on the verge of tears. She shook her head and settled into her bath.
After she stopped crying, her Mother drew her a bath. Her body relaxed, as the warmth of the water enveloped her. But her mind didn't relax. How could he? She thought he loved her. Her soul was crying out. The feeling of lose, total abandonment, as if she had been cast aside, lingered in her aura. Kagome couldn't shake the feeling. Why did he do this to her? 'Maybe he doesn't love me after all. I'm just the ex-shard detector, the remake of Kikyou. A silly girl that still believes in fairly tales, and love. I will not be hurt anymore, I will not let him hurt me.' A new wave a tears hit her. Kagome silently cried, she held her head in her hands, she didn't hold anything back. These tears weren't born from hurt, they were born from anger, anguish.
A soft knock on the door, announce her Mother's arrival. "Kagome dear, are you okay?"
She didn't trust herself to speak at the moment, Kagome knew her voice would break. She took in a deep breath. "I'm fine." Her voice didn't waver, it was solid. Her Mother seemed to buy it.
"Oh, okay dear." Asami sighed. "It's getting pretty late, you better get some sleep soon. Do you want anything?" She asked.
"Yeah, I guess so." Kagome answered. "I'm not hungry either, thank you anyway.
"All right dear," Asami walked away from the door, down stairs.
InuYasha stifled a sigh, as he looked up at the star lit sky. How many times had he looked at the stars with her? He hadn't moved from his spot in the Goshinboku since he returned from Kagome's time. Did she really believe that he didn't love her? That he lied to her? A small part of him wanted her to believe that. That pain would go away after time, she would find a human that would love her. Not a fifthly, tainted abomination. He didn't deserve her. Plain and simple. It would save her a lot of pain this way. She would not know the pain of being called a 'Youkai's whore' she would not be shunned, she would not have to fear for her life, cast out...like he was. Their pups wouldn't have to know what a horrible existence was. He couldn't, he wouldn't put her through that pain, because of his selfish desire. Yes, he told her he loved her as she died. He didn't want her soul to believe that he never loved her. InuYasha wanted her soul to be at peace as it descended to the next world.
He was eternally grateful to Kikyou for what she did. He may not be able to be with her, but that didn't mean that he wanted her to pass on. Sesshomarou's words came back to him.
Your souls were bound together, little brother.
As he thought on this, he felt alittle more of his heart crumble. He leaned back against the Goshinboku and closed his eyes. Staying up all night, and letting his thoughts torture him, was not going to get him anywhere.
Sango and Miroku sat around the fire pit in Kaede's hut. Sango absently stroked Kirara's fur, as she rested in Sango's lap. Kaede went to go gather herbs, to refresh her stock.
"I'm worried about InuYasha and Kagome." The Youkai Taiji shook her head. Her friends where in pain, and she could do nothing to help them.
Miroku sighed and stole a glance at Sango. "They will come to their senses soon. This has been a traumatic experience for us all...." The Monk directed his attention to his Kazaana. He felt alittle helpless without it. But he was more grateful that it was gone. Naraku had put a curse on his Grandfather. It was passed down to his Father, to him. If he still had the Kazaana, he would one day eventually be sucked into it, like his Father and Grandfather before him.
"What are you thinking about Houshi-sama?" Sango asked softly.
"Nothing...I feel kind of helpless without my Kazaana." Miroku admitted softly.
"You are not helpless, you still have your spiritual powers. Also, you are pretty good with your Shakuju."
"Thank you, Sango..I really needed to hear that."
"Any time Houshi-sama." Sango smiled softly.
Kagome stared at the ceiling in her bedroom. If the answered to all her questions were up there, she didn't see them. She couldn't even think straight, her mind racing with unanswered questions. She sighed heavy. 'I wonder what InuYasha is doing.' She wrinkled her nose at the thought. 'He's probably sleeping soundly in the Goshinboku, as I lay here...awake.. miserable.' She glanced at the digital alarm clock beside her bed. 'Three thirty..oh great.' Kagome rolled her eyes. 'I've been laying here for five hours. Terrific!' She lifted her head off the pillow, only to drop it back. She ran her hands down her face, then resumed glaring at the ceiling again. 'I don't think I'm ever going to get some sleep tonight.'
Darkness covered the shadows, no sign that anyone was there. InuYasha looked around in the dark place. "Where am I?" He called out. He wasn't really sure if he wanted that question answered. "I'm not going to get anywhere if I just stand here." His ears twitched, straining to hear any sounds. He walked forward, at least what he thought was forward.
An image of Kagome crying on her Mother's shoulder flashed through his mind. He cringed and shook his head. "Kagome?" He called out into the darkness once more.
"InuYasha..." A low feminine voice wrapped around him. "Oi! Who's there?"
"InuYasha," The voice got closer, it was no more than a fast whisper.
"Who's there, damn it! Show yourself!" He couldn't shake the feeling on loneliness, and anger. 'What's happening to me?" A low growl formed in his throat, he looked around in the blackness.
He felt something touch his arm. He jumped to the side and snarled. Then it came from behind, raking acrossed his back. "Show yourself! Stop fucking with me!"
He suddenly got very cold. The voice he heard earlier came back to him. "You have hurt the one you love, have you not?" This time it was louder, more low.
"Shut up!"
"As I thought. You have hurt her because of your own insecurities, ne? Do you think she deserves that? Why don't you ask her what she feels, instead of making the decision for her? Do you have that right?" The voice got more heavy, it was accusing.
InuYasha's ears plastered themselves to his head. "I have nothing to give her, she will be better off without me!"
"Oh? You think so? Do you think she can replace you? She loves you with all her heart, and you cast her aside because your insecure?" The voice snarled. "How is that fair?"
InuYasha snarled. "Show yourself!"
"Stop changing the subject. I know what you went through as a child. I cannot erase your pain, but she can. Have you ever stopped to think to ask her about her childhood? Or did you assume she had a wonderful life? Have you even given a second thought of why you never see her Father?" The voice snapped back.
InuYasha was silent, as he looked at what could have been the ground.
"I thought as much." The voice got softer. "You both are connected, you belong together. She was not sent back to the Sengoku Jidai on accident." There was a short pause. "The first time she saw you, she was drawn to you. Even when the villagers caught her, threatening her life with arrows, she stood infront of you and protected you, because you could not protect yourself."
"She did?"
"Would I lie?" The voice laughed softly, for the first time. "You cannot tell me, once you got out of your haze and realized she was not Kikyou, you did not feel anything? Even though you promised yourself that you would never love again?"
"I just..."
"Think about that I said to you, InuYasha. My words will help you more than you know." The voice was silent for a short time. "I will give you a gift."
"What is that?" InuYasha said with caution.
"If you heed what I say, and you work through your past, you are strong enough to protect your young ones. Even as you are now. Don't forget that."
"How do you know all of this? Who are you?" InuYasha softly demanded.
"One more thing,"
"What?" InuYasha snapped.
"Your Father and I are proud of you, my love." The voice changed into a softer tone, one that he knew well.
"Mother?"
InuYasha almost fell off the branch he was sitting in when he awoke. "Mother...."
'Is she right?' His Mother always was right when he was a child, she knew everything. He growled softly. 'I've been a selfish bastard...I guess I have been hanging out with Sesshomarou too much. I have never asked her about her life...' InuYasha shook his head in self disgust. He did not sleep for the rest of the night.
Kagome slowly walked down the stairs. She got maybe four hours sleep last night. She walked into the kitchen, to see her Mother sitting at the table, reading the news paper. She pulled out a chair from the kitchen table and sat down.
Asami looked up and smiled at her daughter. "How are you, dear?"
"Fine," Kagome put on a smile, a fake smile. She just hoped her Mom didn't see right through it.
Sure enough she did.
"Are you okay? You look like you didn't sleep at all last night." Asami frowned, and laid down the paper, on the table infront of her.
"I didn't sleep well, but I'm okay.."
"All right...Are you hungry?" Asami asked.
Kagome shook her head. "Not really,"
"When do you have to go back?"
"Today I guess. No reason to put it off." Kagome answered.
"Okay, dear." Asami stood up. "I'll go get your bag ready." She smiled to her daughter once more, before she walked out of the kitchen.
Kagome groaned, and put her head in her hands.
"Hey sis!" Souta ran into the kitchen and stopped by his sisters side. Souta wrinkled his nose and frowned. "You okay?"
Kagome looked at her brother and smiled big. "Of course I am!"
Souta cringed inwardly. "All right then.."
"Go play Souta, I'm fine..really." Kagome ruffled her little brothers hair. Souta shook his head and ran out of the kitchen.
Kagome sighed. 'If my little brother can see that I'm not okay...oh Kami, Sango and Miroku are going to have a field day.'
Asami walked back into the kitchen. "Kagome..where's your bag?"
Kagome turned and looked at her Mother. "Uh...." Kagome thought about it for a moment. "I think I left it in Kaede's hut..I'm sorry Mom."
"It's okay dear. Do you mind carrying a grocery bag until you transfer it to your bag?"
"No, not at all."
Asami smiled and walked over to the sink, and bent down to open a cabinet and pulled out a grocery bag. She turned to show Kagome. "Will this do?"
"Yes,"
She nodded and proceeded to put a few items in the bag, that included pocky and ramen. She turned and set the bag on the table. "There you go."
"Thanks Mom," Kagome stood up, and pushed in her chair. She walked over to her Mother and hugged her and kissed her cheek. "I love you." She smiled genially and grabbed the bag and ran out of the kitchen.
"Love you too!" Asami smiled and resumed reading the paper.
Kagome took in a deep breath. 'Ah, fresh air!' She thought as she started to climb the ladder. She lifted her self up and sat on the edge of the well. She frowned and stared at her lap.
"Kagome!" Shippou shouted and ran acrossed the field, and launched himself on Kagome's lap. "Did you bring me anything?"
"Sure did!" Kagome dug in the bag and produced and small box of chocolate pocky. "There you go," She handed the small fox child the box. "Don't eat it all at once."
"I won't!" Shippou grinned. His Father was killed by the Thunder Brothers. He wanted revenge, so he tried to steal the Shikon Shards from Kagome, to increase his power. InuYasha avenged his Father, and he had been with them ever since.
"How are Sango and Miroku?" Kagome asked the Kit.
"Sango knocked Miroku out last night, but other than that, their okay."
Kagome laughed and picked up Shippou and hugged him. "Lets go see everyone, shall we?"
"Okay!" Shippou jumped on Kagome's shoulder. Kagome stood up and hitched the grocery bag on her forearm and started walking to the Village.
