Chapter 32 - Inuyasha…the new Enzyte man

Morning finally found the group of sleeping humans in the cozy hut, and woke them with it’s penetrating rays of sunshine.

*groan* *grunt* *sniff* *cough, cough* *streeeeeeetch* *yawn*

The various members of the group began to wake, and grumble around in their sleepy and dazed newly awakened states. Nobody spoke, and all respected the mutual need for quiet as they slowly adjusted to the light and woke up.

“MORNING EVERYONE!”, shouted the overly exuberant, and giddily happy hanyou that had just barged into the hut. The humans turned to him in unison and glared, having been startled by the uncharacteristically cheery morning-hanyou.

They all stared at him like he was crazy. Nobody there could ever remember seeing that particular kind of smile plastered on his face before. It looked like he had been smiling for at least five hours straight, and that even if he tried, he would never be able to wipe that silly, giddy grin off his face. Miroku groaned and rolled his eyes. “Inuyasha…you haven’t been eating those mushrooms we found in the forest last week without me have you?”

Inuyasha put his hands behind his back and rocked back and forth on his feet, while looking at Miroku with a twinkle in his eye and that ever present silly smile. “Noooooo….”

Miroku looked at him suspiciously, “Then what, pray tell, are you soooo happy about.”, he said grumpily, having been disturbed in his quiet morning routine.

*smile* *wink* “Nothin”

Miroku sighed and shook his head as he began to get dressed. Inuyasha bounded across the room and pounced on a half awake Kagome, who groaned and tried to cover her head with her sleeping bag. “Go away! I don’t want to get up yet!” Inuyasha started laughing and began to tickle her through the sleeping bag. Kagome squealed and tried to get free “INUYASHA! STOP!”, she gasped out between giggles.

Sango rolled her eyes, and started making breakfast. ‘Must be a mate thing.’

After a rather creepy breakfast, spent silently eating, and trying not to stare at Inuyasha, who managed to maintain his perma-grin even while eating, Shippo joined the group and smiled warmly at them. “Good morning. Did everyone sleep well?” All humans present groaned and surreptitiously glared at Inuyasha, who just continued to grin and put his arm around his mate to give her an affectionate squeeze.

Kagome couldn’t help but catch his contagious mood and smiled happily at Inuyasha. “Why are you in such a good mood this morning, koi?” He nuzzled her ear, “I don’t know.”, he said innocently. Kagome chuckled, “You’re hiding something.” He continued to nuzzle and nip her neck and ear, seemingly oblivious that they had an audience, “Hmmm…maybe…”

Shippo loudly cleared his throat, to gain everybody’s attention. “I must leave this evening to go and be with my mate. But, before I do, I would like to explain why I had to deceive you. Inuyasha and I have already talked about this, and we felt that there are things that you should all know as well.”

“Is that why you are in such a good mood, Inuyasha?”, asked Kagome. “Uhhh…sort of…”, he said, while trying to suppress a delicate pink blush, and avoiding Kagome’s eyes.

“Anyways,” Shippo interrupted, “I need to explain about the jewel and the well. It is my fault all of this has happened, and I want you to know why I did it, and how I lost control.” At the mention of the jewel and the well the entire group fell silent, waiting for Shippo to continue. “As you know, I am kitsune, and as such I have certain powers that allow me to bend time and space. The well is an illusion I created around an ebb of my power that I have anchored between Kagome’s time and ours in that space.”

The group sat in stunned silence, each absorbing what Shippo had just said. Kagome finally spoke up, “So…the jewel isn’t what is responsible for my being able to travel back 500 years?”

“Yep. It was all me. Which brings me to my request for you Kagome. The story of the jewel of four souls is something that I made up long ago, when Myoga asked me to help him secure an heir to the Western lands. So, to ensure that I could remain in control of the situation I made sure that you were in constant contact with my hoshi no tama…my star ball…that holds a portion of my power when I change shape. The glow you see when you look at it is my fox fire in it’s purest form. Kagome, while I trust you completely…I was …um…wondering if I could maybe have it back, I haven’t felt quite complete since I gave it to you to carry.”

Kagome stared at him in stunned wonder as she wordlessly handed the jewel to Shippo. He took it from her and reverently tucked it into his tale. “*sigh* Thank you so much, Kagome. I’m so glad you understand.”

“So, Shippo, you’re claiming that you created this whole situation to help Myoga fulfill a promise?”, Miroku asked incredulously.

“Yes. But something went terribly wrong.”, he replied
