CHAPTER 3

“How did I get in the feudal era? That's the easy part of question. What I'm doing here? I'm not sure how to answer that.” Kagome said thoughtfully.

“Just do the best you can.” Ryu said quietly

“Ok. Bear with me. You know that well near our shrine?” At Ryu's nod, Kagome continued. “I was near the well when a centipede demon burst through yelling about some jewel. I was drug down and out of the well. I fought and it let go of me. Nothing looked familiar until I saw the sacred tree. I ran to it and there was a boy pinned to it with an arrow. He woke up when I got close and started acting an ass.”

“Hey!” Inuyasha objected.

Kagome giggled. “You did. But that's ok; you're not that much of an ass now.” Leaning over she gave him a quick kiss.

Inuyasha, taking up the story said, “I'd been pinned to the tree by a priestess who thought I'd betrayed her. I was there fifty years before Kagome pulled the arrow out.

Kagome started again. “You see I was born with the sacred jewel inside me and of course I didn't know it.”

Inuyasha interrupted saying, “That damn demon bit it out of her.”

Then a raven picked up the jewel, and trying to shoot down the bird I hit the jewel, shattering it.”Kogome said breathlessly.

Inuyasha finished with “Now we're trying to find the jewel shards before Naraku does.”

They both fell silent as Sango and Miroku both started laughing. Trying to catch their breath, Sango kept pointing to Ryu and Kurama. The monk caught enough breath to gasp “You should have seen their faces. You confused the hell out of them.”

Kagome blushed. “Sorry guys. It's just a long story.”

“That's ok. I think we got it.” Ryu said looking at Kurama.

He shrugged. “I guess. We reserve the right to ask questions later.”

Iuyasha nodded sheepishly.

Ryu asked with a frown, “So how do you find these shards?

It was Kagome's turn to shrug. “I can sense them.”

“Oh wow.” Kurama said looking at the others in sympathy. “We know about this Naraku. If you have something he wants, he won't stop until he kills you.”

“He's tried several times,” Kagome said like it was no big deal. “He can't get the best of Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha smiled, pleased at the pride in her voice. Kissing her cheek he pulled her closer him.

Kurama stood up to stretch. He repositioned himself next to Ryu, his head on her shoulder.

Reaching up to stroke Kurama's hair, Ryu looked at Miroku saying, “So how did you come to be traveling with these two?”

“During my wanderings, I met up with them. After learning that I too wanted Naraku dead, they agreed that I could travel with them.”

Inuyasha harrumphed.

The monk grinned. “Ok so Kagome said I could travel with them. Inuyasha didn't like the idea but over time he accepted me.”

Ryu looked puzzled. “Why do you want Naraku dead?”

Miroku looked at his hand as he softly said, “He placed a curse upon my family. It may kill me one day. For the curse to be broken, Naraku must die.”

Ryu started to ask about the curse but feeling Kurama gently squeeze her hand she stopped. His voice was barely a whisper in her ear, “Later ok.”

Barely nodding her head, she looked at Sango. “How did you come to travel with this motley crew?”

Sango looked at the ground. “Naraku possessed my brother, using him to slaughter our entire village. Inuyasha smelled the blood and had come to see if he could help. Even though I was badly injured I tried to kill him.”

Ryu whispered “Why?”

“I'm from a village of demon slayers so I saw him as the enemy. I was too weak and collapsed. Even after all that, they still treated my wounds. I've been with them ever since. Naraku still has my brother.”

Ryu looked horrified. “My God Sango. Are you alright?”

Sango smiled gently. “Some days are better than others. You see why I want him dead?”

Kurama muttered under his breath, “Hell, I want to go find the bastard and kill him.”

Thoughtfully Ryu asked, “So you all desire Naraku's death and that was the reason you formed a pack?”

Inuyasha felt his muscles jump at her question. “How did you know?”

“That's easy. You're a dog demon. It's in your nature to consider those you care about your pack.” Ryu explained.

Kurama added, “You make sure their needs are met before even thinking about your own.”

Sango and Miroku both looked stunned. Miroku said, “That explains a lot.”

“Yes.” Sango nodded. “You're always trying to keep us out of the way in battle. We thought it was because you didn't think we were good enough to fight by your side. But that's not the reason. You were trying to protect you pack.”

Inuyasha blushed. “I'm sorry. I don't doubt you abilities.” He looked at the ground, “What kind of pack leader would I be if I allowed you to get hurt? I never meant to offend you.”

“We're not offended; we're honored to be considered part of your pack.” Sango said.

“Think about this Inuyasha,” Miroku added. “What kind of pack would we be if we let our leader go into battle alone?”

As Inuyasha was shaking his head he heard Kagome say quietly, “It's all about give and take.”

Thinking about that, Inuyasha.looked at his friends. No, not friends, his pack.

By mutual agreement they decided to take a break and have lunch. “You know it's our turn to answer questions don't you.” Kurama asked Ryu.

Running her fingers in his hair, she gave him a mock glare. “Why? You got something to hide?”

Laughing he said, “Never.” Pulling her to him he gave her a quick kiss. “Let's get something to eat. I'm starved.”

****************

After lunch Ryu, Kagome and Sango were sitting together talking amongst themselves when Kagome whispered, gesturing to the corner where the boys sat. “Look at that. Why do I have the feeling they're up to something?'

Glancing toward the boys, they saw Kurama earnestly explaining something to Miroku. The monk looked surprised, then thoughtful. Nodding his head he seemed to agree to something.

“Don't worry Kagome,” Ryu said. “I mean there's just the six of us. How bad could it be?” Realizing she was being stared at, she said “Oh damn. Well we just have to wait and see what they're up to.”

Finally they regrouped knowing they still had much to talk about. Inuyasha pulled Kagome close and watched as Miroku settled Sango against him.

“I'd like to ask you a question.” Miroku said looking at Ryu.

“Ok.” The girl nodded. “Go ahead.”

“What kind of half demon are you?”

She looked startled. “Oh, I thought you had guessed with your comments about Shippo.”

Kurama interrupted, “What's a Shippo?”

With everyone laughing he just grinned, stretched out and laying his head in Ryu's lap he waited.

Gently brushing the hair out of his eyes, she said, “Later ok.” At his nod she looked up at the monk. “I'm a fox demon. Well, half demon.”

Inuyasha said, “You said that you too have a feature that marks you as a half demon.”

“I'd love to show you but I've forgotten my case.”

Kurama stiffened. “Your case.” His hand went into the pocket of his jeans, pulling out something small and white. “Damn I forgot I had it.”

Smiling she took the case out of his hand. Motioning him to sit up she turned her back on the group.

Inuyasha, distressed said, “Look, I didn't mean to offend her.”

“You didn't.” Kurama promised. “Just wait.”

Relieved, Inuyasha sat back to wait.

Ryu straightened her shoulders and slowly turned around to face the group in front of her. At their audible gasp, she blushed. Her nondescript brown eyes were gone. They were silver, not grey, but silver with violet flecks in them.

“Colored contact lenses.” Kagome all but shouted.

Miroku walked over to her to get a better look. “They're stunning but I can see why you feel the need to hide them.”

Inuyasha demanded to know what contact lenses are.

Laughing she put the small case into Kurama's hand. “You explain it to him.”

Watching him walk away with Inuyasha, Sango and Miroku in tow, she felt Kagome kneel down beside her. “Are you angry with me for not telling you?”

Kagome shook her head. “I know you couldn't tell anyone. I'm just happy that now you know you have someone else who understands.”

Ryu smiled at the girl sitting beside her. She noticed that all of Kagome's attention centered on Inuyasha. “You really do love him, don't you?”

“I do. He asked me to be his mate. I don't know what to do.”

Ryu patted the girl on the shoulder. “Just follow your heart. You can never go wrong that way.”

Conversation stopped as Kurama walked up and sat down next to Ryu. Smiling softly at the couple Kagome rose to go to Inuyasha.

Watching as the half demon immediately reached out to pull the girl close, Kurama looked at Ryu correctly reading the expressions crossing her face.

“Don't worry honey,” Kurama said pulling his girl to him. “Inuyasha and I have a plan. Everything will work out.”

Ryu started to ask questions but Kurama stopped her with a gentle kiss. “Trust me,”

Sango interrupted their thoughts, “Ryu may I ask a question?”

At the girl's nod, she continued. “When we met your grandmother she said something that has been puzzling me. What did she mean by red or silver?”

Ryu grinned at Kurama who said, “I expect she was talking about me.”

Standing he said, “I'll just have to show you.” Glancing at Ryu, Kurama asked “Are you ok with this?”

“Sure, but if he gets rude, I'll knock him into the middle of next week.”

Turning his vision inward Kurama thought “Are you ready to come out?” A distinct and separate voice answered. “Of course. Do not worry I heard your mate.”

The assembled group in front of him looked on in awe as the figure of the smiling red head disappeared. In his place stood a haughty looking fox demon with long flowing silver hair, ears and a tail.

Ryu introduced the demon saying, “This is Yoko Kurama.”

“Look at the expression on his face,” Kagome whispered. “It reminds me of Sesshomaru.”

Yoko faded and the good natured Kurama was back. “Who's Sesshomaru?”

Inuyasha answered. “My idiot half brother.”

“By the expression on your face I take it you two are not close.”

“He's ashamed of me. He says I tainted the blood line.”

“Of all the narrow minded attitudes!” Ryu was angry. “What an asshole!”

Kurama draped an arm around her to calm her down and stop her tirade. “It's ok honey.”

Inuyasha sat stunned. Nobody but Kagome had jumped to his defense like that.

Kagome stroked his cheek. “That's what friends do. They stand up for each other.” She cuddled closer before giggling, “Be glad Sesshomaru isn't here now. She'd be giving him hell. Not much scares her.”

Blushing Inuyasha changed the subject asking Kurama “You said you didn't want to admit how you felt about Ryu until you almost lost her. What happened?”

Both Ryu and Kurama tensed. Feeling Ryu squeeze his hand, Kurama explained. “In our time the demon and human worlds are kept separated by an invisible barrier. Most humans have no idea that demons do exist, thinking them myths and legends. The demons behind the barrier are not always peaceful. A group of us have the ability to travel behind the barrier. When ever there's trouble, we get the call.” Kurama paused pulling Ryu closer. “On this day there was a bunch of demons trying to break through the barrier. In order to protect the human world they had to be stopped. I was already angry. Ryu and I had been fighting. Again. We went into battle, in the heat of anger I had become careless. The demon nearly got the best of me twice, Ryu saving my ass both times, which just made me angrier. Then a surprise attack came, neither of us had time to counter. She shoved me out of the way and took the brunt of the attack.” Kurama stopped, eyes glistening.

Inuyasha stepped up, putting his hand on the boy's shoulder said, “Don't feel the need to tell us any more. I'm sorry I caused you pain.”

Kurama shook his head. “It's only painful when I think what could have happened.” Leaning over to kiss Ryu he stood up. “I have to go talk to Grandmother. I'll be back as soon as I can.”

As they watched Kurama walk away, Kagome asked Ryu “So then what happened?”

“I really don't know. I was out of it for about a week. When I came to Kurama was asleep in a chair. Everyone told me he had stayed with me the entire time. I was confused. That was not the Kurama I knew. As I was getting stronger he stayed by my side. He told me he loved me. He asked me to be his mate.” Ryu dropped her gaze to the floor. “I didn't believe him. I thought he just felt guilty. I refused his proposal. Fox demons also mate for life. Life is a hell long time to pay for a guilty conscious.”

“Well it looks like you two got it figured out.” Sango said decisively.

Ryu nodded with a smile. Catching Kagome's eye she said, “If I ask you a question would you answer it honestly?”

Kagome looked at Ryu warily, “Yes.”

“Why are you afraid to take Inuyasha as your mate?”

Swallowing Kagome said in a rush. “There's Kikyo, and the life span and what about going home?'

Ryu said softly, “Kikyo is something you and Inuyasha must talk out. But why are you worried about the lifespan?”

“I'm human, he's a half demon. I would die leaving him alone again.”

Ryu was shaking her head even before Kagome finished speaking. “It doesn't work that way. That's what your mating mark is for.”

“What mating mark?”

“When you consummate your relationship he'll leave his mark on you. That mark will tell others you have a mate. It also gives you his life span.” Ryu walked over to where the girl sat between Inuyasha's knees. Taking Kagome's hands in hers. `Remember; for life means for life. Once you're marked you can't change your mind. Make sure that it's what you want.” Letting go of the girl's hands she turned to go back to her seat.

Miroku asked, “How do you know so much about it?”

“My mother is a demon my father is human.”

Kurama walked in, whistling, his arms full of packages. Grinning at he group he opened a door that the others had not noticed before. Before slipping behind the door he blew Ryu a kiss.

“Where's he going?” Songo asked.

“That's my bedroom.” Ryu whispered blushing. Then pointing across the room she said, “We have two more right there.”

Everyone looked to where she was pointing. Set against the wall were two doors that they barely noticed.

Kurama walked out the door, shutting it behind him. He sat down near Ryu, cuddling her against his chest.

Miroku spoke up. “What about Kagome's question about going home?”

“Sorry Kagome, we kind of got sidetracked. What are you worried about going home for?”

“If I take Inuyasha as a mate will I be able to go home or do I have to choose a time? What about when we defeat Naraku will the well close up?”

Ryu, shaking her head at Kagome said, “Think about what you're saying and then look at us.'

Near tears Kagome said, “I don't understand.”

Holding Kurama's hand Ryu explained “Neither of us have a jewel shard, we come and go as we please. So do my parents. I'm not saying everyone can use the wells. But it's a pretty safe bet that no matter what happens between you and Inuyasha or what happens with Naraku the well will always work for you.”

Eyes shinning Kagome turned and threw her arms around Inuyasha's neck. Whispering “Thank you” he buried his face in her neck.

Kurama, clearing his throat said “Girls why don't you take a dip in the hot spring the guy's and I have some things to discuss.”

The girls stood and began gathering their things. Kurama followed them through the house saying “Ryu may I speak to you for a minute?”

Kagome and Songo laughed and said “We'll meet you there!”

Kurama pulled Ryu into his arms. Kissing her deeply. He broke the kiss to say, “Our mating ceremony is tonight. How do you feel about making it a triple ceremony?”

“I would love it. But Kagome is still unsure about Inuyasha.”

“I have the feeling that he can fix it before tonight.”

“I trust you to help him out.” She turned to go. Turning back she took Kurama face in her hands, looking deep into his eyes she said “I only hope they're as lucky as we are.” Turning again she left.

*****************

Coming in from their time in the hot springs Kagome remarked “We really needed that. I never knew how stressful bearing your soul could be.”

The girls stopped in the outer room noticing the quiet stillness of the house.

“I wonder what's going on.” Sango whispered

The boys were sitting when they came into the room.

Inuyasha stood up to meet Kagome. Sango and Ryu went to sit down beside Miroku and Kurama.

“Kagome, I understand your fears about Kikyo. But believe me when I say it was guilt that kept me tied to her, not love. I love you. I want you to be my mate. I want you to bear my pups. Please believe me. Just you. No one else.”

Getting down on one knee he said, “I don't have much to offer you but I promise to love and protect you forever. All I ask is that you remain with me.”

Dropping to her knees in front of him all she could do was whisper “Yes”, before throwing her arms around her neck.

The clapping of their friends behind them drowned out Inuyasha's next words so only Kagome could hear them. “I promise you'll never regret it.”

A/N I know that my retelling of the fight between Sango and Inuyasha does not follow the plot line in the series. It's intentional. That's why they call it fiction.
