Inuyasha studies the girl as they make their way back to the villiage from the well. She had gone-- from a nobody, to a reminder of Kikyo, to a companion and friend, and then to a love interest. He shakes his head a bit. Then he had hated her, and again they landed at friendship, although it was hesitant and shaky. Her walk is stiff and almost unsteady, she walked like she had the world on her shoulders, they all did.
"The others will be asleep" she looks up "so we won't talk at the hut." they continue walking "I've found Shippo's new teacher, Yuji. He owes a debt to . . .my family and is seemingly loyal. He will help you protect Shippo-- and perhaps Sesshoumaru's little girl. the one who follows him around" Her eyes widen
"Sesshoumaru?"
"We'll be joining with my brother to fight Naraku, He's been gathering forces and the time is close" he watches her expression tense, was she thinking of his comment when he'd lost his temper at her? 'if I was my brother--!'. Truly if Sesshoumaru wanted He could challenge the hanyou's control of the pack and would most likely win, then there would be no 'if'. He did not think it was necessary at all to tell her that.
"So you've made up . . . at least for the time being?"
"A truce, that will hopefully last" If things went well he could settle his pack in his own lands, the ones that were his by right, that had been his fathers. The lands he'd acquired were not bad, but were decidedly lacking when it came to . . . many things.
The village comes into view, Inuyasha pauses, Kagome's steps stilling a pace ahead. She looks back, then around her, she didn't feel a shard or anything . . . threatening
"what is it?"
"we will all be preparing for the battle starting tomorrow morning at dawn" He watches the girls face, it doesn't change but to inquire more "it's important that you learn to make a barrier, even if that is the only thing, large enough to protect Shippo and yourself with"
Kagome feels the strong urge to look away from the gaze
"it's ridiculous to think that we could do much but push our fate further into the future with this last ditch effort, but maybe it'll be something" he frowns. Kagome hadn't seen his this serious in . . .ever. He looked absolutely grim, and had every right to do so, but such thoughts would not help them win.
"A bit of a hypocrite aren't we? You aren't crying, but you might as well be" She smiles a bit at his incredulous expression "You giving up because of mistakes in the past? You going to sit there and brood about the bad things in your life while Naraku plots against our lives?"
"hell no I'm not" her smile widens but also saddens a bit, the almost old--loud, foul mouthed Inuyasha showing through.
"Don't seem like it. It seems like to me if Naraku knocked you down you might just cry"
"As if! If anything it'll be the opposite!"
"Of course!" Inuyasha grins a bit, the tension seemingly fading away. Yes, although not much of a fighter, Kagome was a great asset to the group. She was right, he could not brood, not when there were evil bastards like Naraku to kill.

Naraku scowls "what do you mean!?" Kanna's gaze doesn't waver
"Lord Sesshoumaru has joined forces with the hanyou Inuyasha, they have agreed to work together"
Naraku looks down at the girl "leave me" She follows the order wordlessly
"This . . . is not how things were supposed to play out" clawed hands flex "however this is only a minor setback" He stands knocking an incense stand against the opposite wall snapping it in two
"I will have my wish!"

Sango rearranges herself on the futon again. A million thoughts buzzed in her head, Naraku, Kohaku, her village, and future . . . Miroku and Inuyasha. Miroku-- was something she needed to forget. Inuyasha and Miroku weren't going to just break it off. Inuyasha . . .he was, a companion and friend . . .their leader, even if it was at first unintentionally. How had she ended up in a youkai-based pack? She was a youkai taijiya, the irony was painfully obvious. Her given profession was to exterminate youkai and here she was-- her only real family consisting of beings that were just that. She sighs, she cared for this family . . .their makeshift pack, youkai included. Inuyasha and Shippo . . .Kirara and perhaps even Yuji? Would he stay if they survived Naraku-- of course, Shippo would still need to be taught. Yuji was . . .something, loyal of course-- to a point that made her uncomfortable. She'd been told to the extent debt was paid among youkai but she did not really think it was as true as it was completely true. Youkai were stubborn, prideful creatures, she couldn't believe one would so completely serve another for the sake of debt. Perhaps for wealth or power . . but not debt, but he had-- without question accepted it when Inuyasha told him Shippo's life was more important than his. She pulls the blanket up over her head, thinking better of it when her lungs are filled with the musty scent. She was giving Yuji too much thought, in the morning things were going to be . . . hectic. If she was going to stay up all night thinking she would think productively. Her weaknesses . . .besides Kohaku, what could get them killed? If she slipped up where would it be, and how would she fix it?
